ITunes freezing issues

Like a lot of people on here, the latest iTunes update really seemed to turn the program to ****. I uninstalled and reinstalled which didn't do anything. The next step was to copy all my music out of my iTunes folder, delete all library settings and then readd every song back to my library. That is to say, select "Add folder to library" for the folder that I copied out of my iTunes music folder.
This solved a lot of problems. Like many people have said iTunes was unusable. It froze constantly and produced a ton of lag to every app. Strangely, this lag was most pronounced when the app was in the taskbar. Minimizing to the system tray made things a lot better but still lots of lag. After I nuked my old library database most of the lag disappeared. It still exists, but instead of constantly now it only occurs for the first 10 or so seconds after I seek to a new song. Songs played sequentially will rarely lag my machine, and will do so for the same amount of time as when I seeked to the first song. For instance, I just played Prayer of the Refugee and got about 10 seconds of lag. The next song is Drones, and didn't lag at all for the first several seconds, and then lagged for just a few seconds. iTunes was in the system tray the whole time. The next song, The Approaching curve, lagged briefly shortly after it started even though I seeked through most of Drones.
The problem seems strongly related to your iTunes library database, because an "old" database (my library was around for a long time and most of the songs had additional database info accumulated) seemed to lag a TON and a new library lagged very little. The lag at the beginning could easily be database related as the database is queried for next song information or other information.
So, if iTunes *****, kill your iTunes database and start completely fresh. Please post results here so we can hopefully Apple will listen, and maybe some innocents get their problem fixed to a usable degree now.

YES, even us Mac owners have been scallywagged by the latest Apple Itunes release 7.6.
I get the spinning ball for about 10 seconds between each iTunes task. Oddly, it doesn't freeze the current audio playback, just the accessing of any new task. Your behavior will vary. I had about 35gb of stuff in my iTunes, but i doubt that matters, with the current iPod sizes. I do have a ton of Audio Books in my library, many of which are bookmarked. (using Doug's Itunes Scripts, which are wonderful! Support him!)
I have tried the following ideas, to no avail:
- Exported entire Library to an XML file. Deleted original Library file, replaced with the exported library.
- Removed all Videos from library, just in case any of them are a dud.
- Deleted ALL Itunes music except oldest 100 songs, in case recent songs might be faulty.
- Then re-exported Library and repeated a re-import of the new "slim' Library.
Apple, what have you got to say for yourself? We LOVE iTunes. C'mon, help us out.

  • SOLVED iTunes freeze issue by DISABLING "NOW PLAYING" in IM client!!!

SOLVED (for me). I have been scouring posts/forums for three weeks trying to resolve this. I finally stumbled across a suggestion that WORKED! This sounds crazy--I disregarded it, but was willing to try anything...
My IM client (Trillain & Gtalk) was trying to ping iTunes for the "Now Playing" status option. The moment I turned that off everything went back to normal. Cannot believe what a relief this is.
I'm sure other are out there trying to resolve this issue that cropped up once 10.2 was released. I hope it ends some others' frustrations as it did mine.

    Hi jasonwryan,
Your thread helps a lot. I saw a lot of posts but not this one.
This workaround is fine for me to wait the fix.
    Thanks a lot
    Workaround :
It seems the problem might be linked to transparent items like background.
As explained in the above thread :
According to the bug report the nVidia driver is freaking out and creating too many events, which causes an event buffer in Xorg to overflow.  It works OK with the older Xorg, though.
So the temporary solution is to downgrade 3 packages.
    Install the tool to downgrade
    > yaourt -Sy downgrade
    Downgrade
Note the item number can change
    > downgrade xf86-input-evdev
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 2 (xf86-input-evdev-2.6.0-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
    > downgrade xorg-server
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 1 (xorg-server-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
    > downgrade xorg-server-common
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 1 (xorg-server-common-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
Be carefull : don't update these 3 packages when updating your system (pacman -Syu) since it is not fixed.

  • 10.6.7 update for MacBook Air to address iTunes freeze issue

Yes MacBook Air owners, there is an update:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1370

It may be an update that is labeled for the 13, but I didn't download it from there. I got my "supplemental update" by clicking on the apple at the top left and selecting "Software Update". The supplemental update appeared, I downloaded it and all is well for now...

  • My itunes freezes/ipod wont sync/scan and fix

OK, I think I have a bunch of issues that many people are having (except my problems seems to be everything). Couple of nights ago, I hooked up my ipod as normal and then it synced but froze. I then unplugged the ipod from the itunes and then afterwards I hit the scan and fix button. Thats the story, now heres the breakdown of things I did to try to repair it/problems Im facing.
    1. When I hook up my ipod, the computer (windows 7) sees it and always has the scan and fix problem box pop up.
    2. I have reformatted my ipod (on another computer and even did it once on my computer) still has problems.
    3. When I connect my ipod to the itunes, it freezes it and WILL NOT X out or close after ctlaltdlt. I have to turn the comp off with the power (it wont even restart if I use the restart button)
    4. I have done the chkdsk thing, my ipod seems fine
    5. I have done the no automatic sync, nothing happens (except my itunes freezes)
    6. Ive downloaded numerous things that seemed to help other out with the ipod sync/itunes freezing issues. No solution.
    7. I disable my USB ports, that didnt help.
    8. While in disk mode, the scan and fix pops up. Nothing happens when I connect my ipod to the computer without it (it wont even charge)
    9. Ive hooked up my ipod to another computer and it seemed to work perfectly fine
    10. i have installed, uninstalled, over and over and that has not helped either
please tell me you have a solution and if not, atleast tell me if i choose to gfet another ipod, it will not cause the same problems

I have a 160gig classic that I got for christmas but I've been having the scan and fix problem for some time now maybe since March. July 22nd I updated my iTunes and when I tried to manually add an album to my ipod iTunes froze and I had to ctrlatldel to close it. The end result was me losing about 60gbs of music, movies, and podcasts. Before then I've never had any problems with iTunes freezing EVER. After that everytime I plugged my iPod in iTunes froze until finally I got the chance to restore my iPod. The only problem now is everytime I try to sync I get    -50, -60 and -69 errors all on different files. I'm convinced its either the iPod or the iTunes update or both. help please before I die from no music

  • ITunes freezes when iPod touch 4G is connected + other issues.

I've seen a lot of people struggling with this problem and I'm afraid I got stuck with the same issue. I'm not sure when it started, but I noticed any time I connected my ipod touch 4G to my computer, iTunes freezes almost immediately. When I disconnect, it goes back to normal (most of the time) and displays a message that says: "An ipod touch has been detected but cannot properly be identified."
I tried reinstalling iTunes 5 times, all of which it comes up with what I suppose is an installation error. When I click ok on the error, installation continues as if nothing has happened. There's also been an update for iTunes but it won't download. (Note: my laptop runs Windows 8.1).
On the website, it says iTunes is 64-bit but when I download, it runs 32-bit. I don't know why this happens (I'm not exactly tech savvy) and I don't know why iTunes freezes. I also cannot manually restore my iPod as a lot of people suggested as my home button is stuck. I'm out of options unless someone saves me... and my need for my music. I've been through many forums and nothing worked.
    Can anyone help?
Side note: my ipod also seems to be going through USB chords like nobody's business. It's not negligence on my part, yet they always start causing my ipod to say "charging is not supported with this accessory" then completely stop working. I had one that barely lasted a day! I'm fed up with all these problems and hope someone can help.

    Thank you,
Pretty much all of the posts in that link deal with PC problems, drivers and bios stuff. Since I am running on a Mac, I don't think there is much I can do to deal with those kind of issues.
I don't seem to have any other problems with USB connections to other devices, and my iPod does work with iTunes for at least a short while after I wipe it and start over. This leads me to believe it is less of an USB issue and more something to do with software on either the iPod and iTunes. I am beginning to suspect either something with an App or using the onboard iTunes Store to download content that is somehow corrupting the iPod.
In the past, I had problems with the sync taking an inordinate amount of time to back up, which after months of research I learned that it most likely had something to do with downloading an App from the App Store on the iPod in the early days of the App Store (A problem I was never able to eliminate despite numerous restores, due to the corrupted App being re-loaded every time I used the backups. I WAS able to eliminate the problem after deleting and re-downloading all of the Apps when I nuked my iPod). My problems with not being able to sync happened shortly after I downloaded an App from the App Store (something which I refrained from doing due to fears of corruption!).
I dunno, any thoughts on this?
P.S. I am still waiting for an answer as to the fate of the content I downloaded on my Ipod. If I restore my iPod without transfering the purchases, are they ultimately lost?

  • Itunes 8 Freezing Issue

    Hello,
I'm having an issue with iTunes freezing. When I open the application it will either immediately freeze or work for a few moments then freeze, both requiring me to force close the application. I keep my MP3 library on a Seagate external 160GB HD. I've tried all the FAQ suggested techniques (overwriting .bat files, adjusting msconfig) but none seem to work. I've noticed that the iTunes application WILL run when I don't have my external HD (and music library) connected, though it's hardly useful then.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you for any help!

I did all that the article said to do.... still having the same issue... i wonder if it's my computer. Any other ideas? or maybe i need to talk to apple.. I still have applecare, so I could send in my computer if need be.

  • Itunes 10.5 win7 preferences freezing issue

    Hello there,
First of all, i have iphone 3gs, ipad1 and ipad2 authorised with my win7 PC (64 bits) and one ipad1 and itouch 1st authorised with an iMac, iphone 4 and itouch 2nd with a xp netbook.
Installing ios5 went very fine with the iphone 4 and xp in the same day when ios5 released.
But with the iphone 3gs, ipad1 and ipad2; i had no luck up to now.
The main problem is, after i have upgraded to itunes 10.5 and when i click the edit>preferences, itunes freezes. After approximately 5 minutes, the preferences window opens. I can navigate all the preferences smoothly except for the devices tab. When i click it, it again freezes for 10 mins, after that i see an empty backup list. I know that my backups are in my HDD (i check the backups at its location).
Also when i tried to make a new backup, an error window says something like it can not communicate. When i try to make the communication tests, it passes.
I' ve searched the net and found those :

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2292
    http://www.donloper.com/tech-support/itunes-freezing-up.html
I' ve done anything in those articles and with non of them i could succeed.
I' ve uninstalled itunes and components in the order the article describes. Deleted configuration files, checked anything that remains. Opened a new account. Disabled all non ms services and programs. Deleted all my podcasts, changed them to update manually. Anything that is written in those articles for several times and came to a conclusion that i think the problem is with this version of itunes.
The worst thing is not only being able to use woderful ios5, my ipad2 64 gb + 3g' s microphone has a failure. I will change it at the service. But as soon as i can' t make a backup and update to ios5; i cannot.
So, i' am really very sad about this and i please from Apple and all the community to find a solution and/or Apple, please find the bug and release an itunes update with a fix soon.
Apple, i can send you any file that you can request from me to speed up the process.
And community please, don' t write anything without reading the links i have written above!!!

so what i did is to remove all Apple components including the icloud utility, safari etc as explained here :
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
and then downgraded to 10.4.1 as there were a link to download it :
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1427
the result is success as i could see my backups which were already there, and could be able to backup again.
the sad part is i' m stilling waiting for an itunes fix (10.5.1 let's say). 18 days have past away. I want to be counted in those 25M successfull upgraders of ios5 and happy apple users over somewhere.
..and of course, as usual, i have a suggestion for dear APPLE STAFF!!
i understand that itunes programming is so complicated (it' s not users' choice of course, that's the way Apple wants it to be). And i am sure that you are reading all this boring cries although you don' t usually reply or say or comment anything (That' s God's behaviour and i don' t prefer that a company or human being acting like that). So while you are on the go for solving this issue in itunes, why not enhancing the icloud tool detecting the idevices backups in the PC at their location and being able to upload to the cloud (God knows, maybe we could need extra storage, and you also don't loose any trading??) and as we, customers who stuck in ios4 could go for any other pc, upgrade to ios5 and then download our data from the cloud? Then, you may have extra time to solve the bugs in itunes. what we will loose only not being able to sync media with our pcs which is quite acceptable.
Buuut, you have to warn us that you have changed the icloud utility like i suggested (if you ever do) as we can' t be aware of that because we don' t have 10.5 itunes and the icloud utility for now.
    Cheeerss!!

  • ITunes freezes on my macbook pro when i sync my iphone

    Hi guys --
I've been following tons of threads to get an answer - can you help?
Out of nowhere, my iPhone can't sync with iTunes - whenever I plug in my iPhone, iTunes freezes, and I get the rainbow beachball. After a bit, I get a message that my computer is set not to allow synching -- do I want to allow synching? I select yes, and then I'm told this isn't allowed. When I select override, it's still not allowed.
    Here's my specs:
    MacBook Pro (2011, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7), running OS X 10.9.4
    iTunes 11.3.1
    iPhone 5S, running iOS 7.1.2
    Here's what I've done:
    - repaired disc permissions, and restarted the computer (nothing changed.)
    - followed every suggestion here (iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch) -- including installing updates to both OSs and iTunes, disabled sync (and iTunes STILL freezes), deleted every podcast I had from both my iPhone and laptop, and rebuilt my iTunes library following the instructions that they gave.
The only other thing I can think to do is to start a new user on this laptop, copy over my music (which is all backed up to an external hard drive, so no biggie - just annoying), and/or reformat my iphone or this computer. Would REALLY love not to do that. Any other suggestions or ideas?

    Hi there,
I have the same issue as you do, this has been going on for quite a while now (2 months) and I have tried everything, including creating a new user - did not work. Perhaps you might have better luck than I did.
I really don't understand how this can just start happening for no reason.
If you have any luck I would be keen to hear how you fixed the problem.
    Good luck!

  • ITunes Freezes when I try to sync my new iPod Touch

I can't sync my new iPod with my iTunes library. I have posted in the iTunes forum, although my title says that I have solved the issue. It isn't, so I'm contemptlating reposting.
I bought a 64gig iPod Touch the other day to replace an old broken iPod. When I try to sync it with my main iTunes library, after a short while (5-500 songs) iTunes freezes and won't shut down. I have on a couple of occasions got a message saying the the computer can't write to the iPod, or the iPod isn't responding, or an "Unknown Error".
It seems to work fine with my laptop.
I found a page on fixing "Unknown Errors" and have tried most of the suggestions.
    I've tried:
*) Uninstalling and Reinstalling iTunes several times
*) Resetting and restoring my iPod several times
*) Updating my drivers - they are all up to date apparently
*) Stopping all unnecessary programs and services from running on start up
*) Creating a new user account and trying to sync my iPod from there. I have successfully managed to sync the iPod with a small number of songs or a film on my own account, so I need to test it with a fairly big library. I copied my main iTunes library into iTunes on the new account. The sync hasn't worked (although it is syncing the same files).
I found a post with a google search that suggested it could be a power drain on my USB port / Bus, or somet fhing like that. Not sure exactly what that means, but it sounded plausible. I have recently upgraded my graphics card.
I did also see a solution posted that suggested formatting the iPod using My Computer and the iPod icon, but I can't imagine that would do anything more than the restore iPod option in the iPod menu?
Can anyone help? Getting a bit fed up now... I've had the iPod a couple of weeks and have barely been able to use it yet.

Are you using security software on your PC? If yes, try to disable the software or check the settings. More info here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125

  • Snow Leopard Crash / Freezing Issue - Keyboard Dead - Hard Reboot Required

    Good morning,
Been using Snow Leopard on a 24" 2.4Ghz iMac pretty much since the day of launch. Initially was very pleased, no real problems, seemed to run even smoother than regular Leopard, however, recently, my system has developed a bunch of issues, particularly when running word and/or transmission (possibly other apps, but I have noticed with these two so far).
The main problem is, very randomly, the system will lock-up. This can be after 1 hour or 24 hours, there is no real correlation. After the lock up, you are able to use open apps, ie Transmission, Word, Safari, Finder, etc, but they do not function correctly...for example
Word - You can click into documents, but any keyboard strokes are completely ignored.
Safari - You can browse links on default start page, etc, but you cannot create new tabs or type anything into the address bar.
Finder - You can browse folders; but you cannot perform any functions such as dragging to trash, etc.
Also worth noting, it the main menu bar at the top of the screen continues to say either "Word" or "Transmission" etc, regardless of what application you are in. Clicking on any applications icons in the dock has no response unless they were already running.
The system is unable to shut down or log off, and you cannot quit apps. The only option is to do a hard reset via holding down the power off button.
Note: My system is set to never sleep. There is no screensaver.
Any advice would be gratefully received. I'm a fairly new mac user so i'm not aware how to view log files etc., which may identify the problem.
    Many thanks in advance.

Just want to reiterate. I am seeing freeze issues with my iMac 2.8 GHZ 4GB ram and wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Had this for two years without problem. When a freeze occurs mouse is reponsive but clicks don't give result. I am unable to open window to force quit apps. It may be related to iTunes but I can't confirm. Happening again now, even as I type this I can't open other appslike console log. I add more later.

  • ITunes Freezes when I plug in my Ipad

I'm on a Windows 7 PC, and have installed the latest Version of Itunes 10.2.2.12.
I have had the Ipad 2 for exactly 5 days, and have successfully synced the thing a total of 3 times... Only right after I intially install (Or reinstall) Itunes.   Everytime I try to connect the Ipad now, one of 3 things happens.
    1. Itunes freezes completley, and never starts responding again.
    2. Itunes freezes momentarily, but never shows that the Ipad is connected.
    3. Itunes Doesn't do anything... just dosn't realize there is an Ipad connected.
I've reinstalled a total of 3 times, and only then am I able to sync... and only once.
Now the PC actually recognizes that I have an Ipad linked, as it shows the icon, and says that my ipod is connected in the system tray

I have experienced the same issue.
    I see the following behavior:
hangs sometimes when plugging in ipad.  ipad does not seem to recognize synching.  unplugging ipad in this situation unfreezes itunes.
re-plugging in ipad sometimes works while itunes is up.  Most always works if itunes is shutdown before plugging in ipad.
I have re-installed itunes from scratch several times.  I believe that this has improved the situation temporarily but I generally see it return eventually.

  • Help!!! iPod won't sync with iTunes, iTunes freezes!

Hello, I'm sorry if this topic is already in an other one, but I couldn't find it.
First of all, I'm very pleased with my iPod Classic 160Gb, finally I can carry my complete collection with me. Since I'd installed the 8.0.1 update for iTunes, my iTunes freezes immediately, and my iPod won't show up in iTunes, and the screen of the Classic is stuck on "Connected".
If I don't connect, iTunes works perfectly, even with my iPhone (Everything works smoothly).
What is the problem?, I've tried everything, Reboot iPod Classic 160 Gb, reïnstall iTunes (complete deinstallation), i tried different USB-ports of my laptop, other USB-cabel, reboot PC. All updates, even my USB-ports. Can somebody please tell me what's happening? And solve my problem?
I didn't found this same problem in any of other topics, if someone finds the same topic WITH an answer, I would be pleased.

Ok seriously. We pay way too much for these things for crap like this to happen all the time. Apple has us all by the gonads b/c they know we can't get them to work any other way.
Friday, my 80G classic worked just freaking fine on my home computer. After I reinstalled it b/c of some error with quicktime. I also connected it to my brother's laptop over the weekend it did fine. Used it on work computer today worked fine---after I had to uninstall and reinstall quicktime.
Loaded the iTunes upgrade on work computer today, seemed to work fine after that.
Now at home I get the following error: Your iPod needs to be reformatted for use with Windows. Would you like to run iTunes to restore your iPod now?
I've tried for weeks now to back up my iTunes on both my computers and it always freezes. I was hoping after the new version this would be fixed. NOT so much.
So in a nut shell....I CAN'T back up my stuff, b/c iTunes *****. Now in order to use it I have to reformat my iPod, which will erase all my stuff. So I'm SCREWED. I'm not usually a hostile person, but at this point I could scream!!!!!
the apple/iTunes support team has been nothing but helpful on some duplicate song issues I've had in the past. Why in the H*LL can't they freaking fix this???
If I have to reload 80G it won't be on an iPod. I'll sell the **** thing to some other sucker, find something else, or for pete's sake, go back to CDs.
Don't tell me Apple doesn't have enough money or enough geniuses (genii) to figure this out with out it causing my time and money I've already spent.
    Rant over....

  • Itunes freezes when connecting and ipod does not show up

When I connect my nano 3rd gen in windows vista using itunes 9 my ipod does not show up and itunes freezes. the ipod remains with the connected screen and I cannot close out of itunes. Any help would be wonderful... Thanks!!

I have (finally)solved the problem with my iTunes freezing! Here's what I did:
1.I backed up my entire music library to an external hard drive.
2.Then I completely uninstalled iTunes 9 from my computer.
3.After a re-boot I then completely deleted my entire music library. (this can be a little scary so I double checked my music library back up on the external drive)
4.I Googled iTunes 8 and found it at
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/28/apple-itunes-8-2-and-quicktime-7-6-2-di rect-download-links/
    5. I downloaded it but before I installed it I copied my music library back to my computer. I did not copy everything that was in my original iTunes music folder however, I only copied the music, album art work, applications, games,Tv shoes, and podcasts folders. I placed those folders in a new folder called iTunes on my computer. I did not include any of the iTunes database files eg: .itl / .xml / or .itdb files as these were created in iTunes 9.
    6. Now I opened iTunes 8.2 and added all of my music and other media content.
    7. Next I attached my iPod nano to my computer. Then Windows automaticly open a window asking me if I wanted to scan for problems or continue without scanning. I had windows scan for problems and once that was done my iPod nano began to sync. Oh what joy!
I think, and this is only a guess based on what I've read here on Apple's discussion pages and my own experience, that there is a problem/conflict or bug with iTunes 9, Windows Vista and the 3rd -4th generation iPod. I will NOT be upgrading to iTunes 9 until Apple has addressed this issue. It seems to me that there are a lot of people having similar issues.

  • ITunes freezes only when iPod is connected to USB

    Hello. Here's a real head-scratcher...
I have an iPod touch (model MA627LL, sw version 2.2.1) that I've used with no problem on this computer for a long time. It had not synced since last April, so I tried this morning, and have been troubleshooting ever since!
    a) Windows Vista ultimate brought up Autoplay when I plug in the Ipod - so I went into Control Panel and told it to stop that.
    b) Plugging in the iPod does NOT make iTunes come up
    c) Open iTunes first (version 8.2.1.6) ad THEN plug in iPod - not only does it not acknowledge the device, but iTunes freezes. If I unplug the iPod, then it unfreezes! This is regardless of what USB pot I use. (Keep in mind this was never a problem before)
    d) I made sure I have the latest Windows updates (gawd I hate Windows--but that's another topic)
    e) I reset the iPod (but not sure if there is a "harsher" reset I should try?
    f) Have rebooted the computer...
    Three notes:
    1) This is an almost-one-year-old high-end laptop from Sager with top-of-line everything.
    2) I use a universal remote with my iPod (has worked fine for about 7 months) -- this stopped working with the iPod some time in the last few days. Interesting coincidence, eh? (BTW -- it's the Harmony remote from Logitech -- an AWESOME product!)
    3) I recently went through heck to get some software running on my computer that requires a dreaded hardware dongle for security which uses the USB. It took MANY tries and good luck to get it to work... so I suspect it maybe screwed up my USB driver? BUT all my other USB stuff still work fine.
    Any suggestions?

You mean a clean install or system restore of Windows Vista?
Wow -- I hope it doesn't take something that extreme...
(And again: gawd I hate Windows!)
Any other suggestions of things to try/look at before resorting to that?
Also -- when I go to Device Manager, there are no issues at all in the USB controllers list -- and in fact my iPod isn't listed there at all. However, in the "Portable Devices" section , my iPod is listed there -- and the properties says that the driver is provided by Microsoft (not Apple) and is dated 6/21/2006 and is version 6.0.6001.18000
