ITunes freezing my mac

I have a late 2008 unibody MacBook running at 2GHz with 4 GB of memory. OSX 10.9.5.
My problem is, every time I open iTunes 12.1.2, I get the spinning colorwheel before I can even click on anything. It freezes my mac to the point where no force quit commands work, and I have to manually reboot it. When restarting, I get a message that pops up "Your computer restarted because of a problem." I have found no solutions to this problem, and all other discussions I've found differ slightly from my issue. Help!!!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
When you post the log extract or the crash report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • ITunes Freezes my Mac Mini - Power Cycle Required

    Hi,
If I leave my Mac unattended for long periods of time with iTunes open (whether playing music (it helps negate my tinitus) or not), my machine becomes completely frozen and needs to be powered down. If I leave it without iTunes open, it does not freeze.
So I'm depserately looking for a solution. I've tried repairing the permissions, re-installing iTunes, removing screensavers and changing my power settings but nothing seems to have made a difference. There are no logs reporting problems either.
Does anybody have any idea what I can do to remedy this? There are no other problems with my computer (none that I am aware of).
Most of my music is on an external USB drive (MP3 brought over from Windows) and the rest is on my main personal folder. I have about 20Gb free on my main system drive.
    Thanks in advance

I think the newest iTunes is a bit buggy. I have those complete system freezes if I start some movies one after another for testing purposes. All goes well unti film 3 or 4 and then the whole MBP stalls. Only help - reboot.
Another thing: every movie or TV show stalls after a certain time for some moments and jumps forward some seconds. After that stall, all runs OK, only some seconds later a short stuttering is noticeable.
I have a very large audio library on a external drive as primary drive. I leave the movies on another external drive w(o copying to the primary drive. So I just think, iTunes is stretched to its limit and has memory problems. The iPod classic 160 had those in the first weeks after its appearance, too. Lots of people with large libraries exchanged their iPods w/o effect. I was patient and now at least that works fine.

  • IPAD1 is no longer recognised by my MAc. Itunes freezes when I restart everything. My  iphone 4 works fine. How do i fix this?

My IPAD1 is no longer recognised by Itunes on my Mac deskop. I have follewed the steps recommended by Apple Support aand sometimes after shutting everything down & restarting Itunes briefly recognises my ipad before freezing. Thereafter it sometimes recognises an Ipad is connected but says it cannot identify it. THe message readds "An iPad has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPad, then try again."  Dsiconneceting & reconnecting achives nothing. However the Ipad does receive a charge from the Mac
This started after updating some Apps, and the next sync advised me that there had been issues syncing Apps. Then this problem started.
How an I reconnect my IPAD so Itunes recognisese it?. THere is no problem syncing my Iphone4s

    - Look at the dock connector on the iPad. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, foreign material and cracked or broken plastic.
    - Reset the iPad. Nothing is lost
Reset iPad: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • ITunes freezes MY ENTIRE MAC

This just started happening a while ago and it didn't bother me much until I had just lost a bunch of data due to this problem
Basically, everytime I play a song in iTunes, it might seem to go well after a couple songs, but then at random points that happen very often now, iTunes freezes and I just see the song length stuck at 0:00
The weird part is taht the song actually plays ALL the way through without any problems, but my entire mac is frozen now...
I can only move my mouse, which is useless because the dock, background, iTunes, EVERYTHING is now frozen
The only solution I have is to hold down the power button and do a hard restart
Repairing Disk Permissions doesn't do anything and scanning my Mac says its fine...
So can someone tell me what's wrong?

  • Itunes freezes on my mac mini?? its okay for the first few minutes then freezes. i just then get the colour wheel and have to 'force close'

hi there, i have major problems with itunes freezing on my mac Mini, its okay for the first minute or two then it freezes and i get the spinning colour wheel and i have to force close.
    can anyone help?

I suspect that you'll have to mount that volume at boot time and not at login time as you're doing now.  If you can arrange that, then the volume should be available to all users.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do a boot-time mount.  I tried searching for "mount drive startup mac" (without the quotes), but most of the results described how to mount a volume at login time.  Ignore any advice that mentions "Login Items".
I did find this discussion, but it's very sketchy.  You also have to be careful that any advice you find applies to the version of OS X that you're using.

  • Itunes on my Mac  freezed on " attendo che le modifiche siano applicate "

Itunes on my Mac is freezed on "attendo che le modifiche siano applicate" while syncronizing my Iphone 5 , what should I do to exit from this condition ?

Of the second and third scripts, the latter could perhaps be deemed the "most secure"; however, it might block more than you want. If you really want to use one of those, then I'd suggest using the second script. Otherwise, I'd recommend that you take a look here. (I only slightly examined the first script.... I do not understand the language of the comments, and I'm no iptables whiz. )
Also, note that you don't have to use an actual script to set up the rules; rather, you can save the rules you want to a file that will be read by iptables automatically (/etc/iptables/iptables.rules). Here's a modified version of mine:
    # /etc/iptables/iptables.rules
    # These rules (and the commented instructions) derived from:
    *nat
    :PREROUTING ACCEPT [163:50538]
    :POSTROUTING ACCEPT [40:2451]
    :OUTPUT ACCEPT [40:2451]
    COMMIT
    *filter
    :INPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
    :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0]
    :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
    :FIREWALL - [0:0]
    :TRUSTED - [0:0]
    -A INPUT -j FIREWALL
    -A FORWARD -j DROP
    -A FIREWALL -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
    -A FIREWALL -i lo -j ACCEPT
    -A FIREWALL -j TRUSTED
    -A FIREWALL -j DROP
    # put your own exceptions here, like so (replacing <tcp/udp> with either "tcp" or
    # "udp" -- minus the quotes -- and <port number> with the port you'd like to open):
    # -A TRUSTED -p <tcp/udp> -m <tcp/udp> --dport <port number> -j ACCEPT
    COMMIT
Of course, there are benefits to keeping the rules in a script. For instance, you could then easily set the default iptables rules, allow all traffic, etc. Plus, some firewall-related things (such as the various echo commands in the scripts you provided) cannot (to my knowledge) be done by iptables alone.
If you already have a script that sets up the rules you would like to use, you can save yourself the hassle of creating a rules file by following the directions outlined here.

  • IPod freezes iTunes freezes Mac

Starting two weeks ago, connecting my iPod 30G to my Mac Book Pro, the actualization stops, iTunes freezes. Once doing a force quit, the freezing infects the finder and from there every other programm. I have to force-quit the MBP.
First, I went from automatic to manual, but reaching song 55 or so, same thing. Several times. With photos, without them, switching calender of, just doing a few playlists or some more ...
Then I searched these discussions - some had the same problem it seemed, but back in march and without solution.
Then I talked to the German hotline, two ladies, good ideas, like resetting or - a little overdose - setting up a second user and checking if the songs were corrupted - no change.
I sent in the iPod and got the same device back - resetted, cared for, no fault found, of course.
I reinstalled iTunes 6.0.4, because the problem started with 0.5, i thought. This was today. Failing first, it once put me 140 songs on the iPod, but going further it froze. By now I had about 5 force quits.
    Has somebody an idea?

  • IPhone connected to Mac, iTunes freezes when selecting PODCASTS tab

So I upgraded to iTunes 11.1 and iOS7 (running OSX 10.8.5) and my podcasts and smart playlists did not sync. (I do not use the Podcats app because I have so many podcast-related folders and smart-folders.) Every time I click on the PODCASTS tab when the iPhone 5 is connected iTunes freezes and I have to Force Quit the app.
I've fixed permissions, run Disk Utility, restarted... nothing helps. This seems to specifically be an iTunes problem.

So I just spent an hour restoring my iPhone, then restoring from backup (40Gb filled in a 64Gn iPhone takes a while). Very interestingly, I watched all my podcasts get copied into my iPhone but they are not accessible from the Music app, nor are they found when doing a Spotlight search!
I downloaded Apple's Podcast app and they seemed to appear there (couldn't tell for sure, app is confusing and it was accessing Wifi so I diodn't know what it saw, or if it was fetching files). But of course that app has no smart folders and accessing new podcasts and podcasts based on time-length is impossible.
Oh yes, after the restore I tried clicking on the Podcasts tab and iTunes froze up again....

  • When I connect my iPod Classic 160GB to my Mac iTunes freezes. iTunes 10.3.1

Ever since the newest update from iTunes came out every time I connect my 160GB iPod Classic, iTunes freezes and I have to force quit. What can I do for this?

My I-pod froze up to and could not go to my library.  Took the pod in to the store (apple genius bar), they reset the pod (said their might have been a glich in the pod), brought
it home and now it works fine

  • My Itunes freezes when I plug in my ipod and wont verify or sync

My Itunes freezes every time I try to plug in my ipod classic. It wont verify my ipod so it can't sync or update it. I have to shut down and restart my computer to get it to function at all. I have had my ipod for awhile and have had no problems with it and my Iphone connects and syncs just fine. My Itunes is up dated with the latest version and I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it. I have reset my ipod multiple times. I can't even restore my ipod because it freezes so fast I cant get the restore started. Someone PLEASE HELP!!

I'd suggest you post your question on the iTunes for Windows forum. This forum is meant for getting Windows to run on a Mac.

  • ITunes freezes when iPod touch 4G is connected + other issues.

I've seen a lot of people struggling with this problem and I'm afraid I got stuck with the same issue. I'm not sure when it started, but I noticed any time I connected my ipod touch 4G to my computer, iTunes freezes almost immediately. When I disconnect, it goes back to normal (most of the time) and displays a message that says: "An ipod touch has been detected but cannot properly be identified."
I tried reinstalling iTunes 5 times, all of which it comes up with what I suppose is an installation error. When I click ok on the error, installation continues as if nothing has happened. There's also been an update for iTunes but it won't download. (Note: my laptop runs Windows 8.1).
On the website, it says iTunes is 64-bit but when I download, it runs 32-bit. I don't know why this happens (I'm not exactly tech savvy) and I don't know why iTunes freezes. I also cannot manually restore my iPod as a lot of people suggested as my home button is stuck. I'm out of options unless someone saves me... and my need for my music. I've been through many forums and nothing worked.
    Can anyone help?
Side note: my ipod also seems to be going through USB chords like nobody's business. It's not negligence on my part, yet they always start causing my ipod to say "charging is not supported with this accessory" then completely stop working. I had one that barely lasted a day! I'm fed up with all these problems and hope someone can help.

    Thank you,
Pretty much all of the posts in that link deal with PC problems, drivers and bios stuff. Since I am running on a Mac, I don't think there is much I can do to deal with those kind of issues.
I don't seem to have any other problems with USB connections to other devices, and my iPod does work with iTunes for at least a short while after I wipe it and start over. This leads me to believe it is less of an USB issue and more something to do with software on either the iPod and iTunes. I am beginning to suspect either something with an App or using the onboard iTunes Store to download content that is somehow corrupting the iPod.
In the past, I had problems with the sync taking an inordinate amount of time to back up, which after months of research I learned that it most likely had something to do with downloading an App from the App Store on the iPod in the early days of the App Store (A problem I was never able to eliminate despite numerous restores, due to the corrupted App being re-loaded every time I used the backups. I WAS able to eliminate the problem after deleting and re-downloading all of the Apps when I nuked my iPod). My problems with not being able to sync happened shortly after I downloaded an App from the App Store (something which I refrained from doing due to fears of corruption!).
I dunno, any thoughts on this?
P.S. I am still waiting for an answer as to the fate of the content I downloaded on my Ipod. If I restore my iPod without transfering the purchases, are they ultimately lost?

  • Itunes freezes when importing cd's

Everytime I try to import a cd itunes freezes on track 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12. I have to force quit itunes like a dozen times before itunes quits and I can remove the cd from the drive. What is going on? Is it some setting I have? This happens on 9 out of 10 cd's. They are not very scrathed up at all. Any ideas?

Same happening here. If I have a CD which iTunes isn't happy with (presumably too scratched), iTunes just locks up. The machine won't let me bring up the force-quit dialog, nor can I easily switch to other programs (and when I do, the whole machine is really sluggish).
I'm going to switch off the audio correction option for importing -- my guess is that iTunes just gets in an infinite loop trying to read corrupt data from a CD, and slowly ends up hogging all the Mac's resources.
    What a bug!

Thanks Santa for the new iPod Nano. Unfortunately, every time I connect the ipod to the computer, iTunes freezes and I have to completely reboot the PC. Very frustrating! Just in case, let's doublecheck to see if you're accidentally running two different versions of iTunes (the new 10.6.1.7 and one of the old ones with the freeze-on-nano-plugging-in issue.)
There's some information on troubleshooting that in the Opening iTunes section of the following document:
Troubleshooting iTunes installation on Mac OS X

  • When I connect my iPhone to iTunes, iTunes freezes.

Unfortunately, when I connect my iPhone to iTunes it'll freeze for about 4-8 minutes and after that iTunes will tell me that "iTunes was unable to load data class information with SyncServices". This hasn't always been an issue this just started about two weeks ago and I finally ran out of things to do. I restored my iPhone three times already and that hasn't resolved the issue. I've uninstalled iTunes and updated iTunes a multiple of times. I've really ran out of issues. I don't know what to do. Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi andremyrick
I haven't heard from you for a while,
Please follow these steps, however it would be great to know the
Operating System (OS) your are running iTunes on (Windows/Mac), what computer it is (Acer Aspire, Windows Surface, MacBook Air) and what version of iTunes you are using (iTunes 10.0.0, iTunes 11.0.0, iTunes 11.1.5 e.c.t).
So the best thing to do at the moment is to update iTunes to the newest version: iTunes 11.1.5 and make sure that your iPhone is on iOS 7.1.
I am under the belief that iTunes 10 is not compatible with iOS 7 and therefore this may be the main issue.
I just would like you to check at the moment that your iPhone is definitely updated to iOS 7.1 as this will help eliminate some bugs that could be causing this issue.
To update iTunes go to: https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and select the OS (operating system) you are using Windows/Mac and make sure you download the latest software iTunes 11.1.5. Let this download and then restart your computer. Once your computer is back on plug in your iPhone and lets see whether this will allow your iPhone to sync.
Also make sure that the Apple iD on your iPhone is the same as the one on the computer and that the passwords are entreated correctly on both.
Please keep me posted and I look forward to hearing from you!
