ITunes freezing when connect iPhone

Hi, I'm running iTunes 11.2.1 on OS X 10.9.3 and since the latest iTunes update whenever I connect my iPhone 5 I just get the spinning wheel in iTunes and it freezes. Any ideas?

Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • ITunes Freezes when connecting iphone 4 or ipad to my Vista computer

Everything had been working just fine on my Vista PC up until the new Itunes update was installed. Now, whenever connecting either of my devices, an iPhone 4 or my iPad 64GB 3G, the device appears on the left column in iTunes, but nothing updates, and not only does iTunes freeze, but the entire computer becomes largely unresponsive. (I can move the pointer, but that's about it.) Task manager cannot be activated by Ctrl-Alt-Del, and I need to do a hard shutdown of the computer.
I have tried disabling and (briefly) uninstalled my antivirus and firewall software, subsequent to scanning for viruses and malware (McAfee). I tried removing the library files, in case some aspects of the library became corrupted. I have also examined the support forums and tried some suggestions, but the problem remains.
The only recent change to my computer has been the iTunes update (unless Windows Vista updated in the background, not sure...)
iTunes itself seems to work just fine, so long as I don't attempt to connect a device to it.
    Help! Thanks in advance everyone...

Thanks, but this had no impact on the problem. And the "repair" feature didn't seem to do anything.
Would appreciate knowledgeable of the extent of this problem chiming in too - would love to hear if there are any workarounds.
Is there an easy way to get older versions of itunes? I'd like to try removing and reinstalling one of the older iterations of itunes that actually works.

  • ITunes Freezes when connecting iPhone (AppleMobileDeviceHelper/SyncServer to blame?)

I'm having several issues with iTunes and connecting my phone.  iTunes becomes unresponive for about 30 mins when either connecting my iPhone (via cable or seeing it over WiFi when WiFi-sync is enabled), pressing sync, or sometimes other tasks which relate to the device.  While frozen, iTunes continues playing the current track until the end, then it won't start the next one until it becomes responsive again.
I think I've tracked down the error; I noticed that iTunes has a child process called "AppleMobileDeviceHelper", terminating this causes iTunes to resume (although it won't sync the device anymore until it restarts).  Upon further investigation, I looked at which files AppleMobileDeviceHelper was using, and found the "syncservices.log" log in ~/Library/Logs/Sync/.  Looking at the log, it was clear something wrong was going on since the following lines were being added to it every few seconds:
    2012-01-25 22:51:21:640|SyncServer|40031|0x10b016e50|Logging|Info| Logging initialized, engine version 673.3 : log level 3

I couldn't find a process called "SyncServer", I'm guessing it failed to start due to being unable to start SQLite, which is why ApplyMobileDeviceHelper is presumably unable to connect to it, just after.  The SQLite error complains of apparently not having enough space, although as you can see I have over 780GB free, and there's plenty of free space on my iPhone, too.
Does anyone have any idea why these errors might be happening?  I've seen people report similar issues (and that iTunes normally resolves itself after a while), although it's not fixed it for me (as I have to do that everytime), and I've found nothing searching for the errors in that log.
    Late 2008 15" MacBook Pro 2.8 Ghz, 10.7.2, iTunes 10.5.3, iPhone 4 running 5.0.1
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

After some extensive digging around, I've been able to fix this problem by trashing the "SyncServices" folder in ~/Library/Application Support.
I tried running SyncDiagnostics.app, which I found in the same directory as SyncServer.app (which I found through spotlight).  That froze, so I killed it, and then I found a support document pointing me to a perl script to run (on step 10).  That also failed, but it revealed the SyncServices folder and its location, so after closing applications which appeared to be failing because of SyncServer (the perl script, SyncDiagnostics.app, Mail, iTunes), I trashed the folder and restarted.  And then it all worked!

  • (macOS X) itunes freezes when connecting iphone /ipad for syncing

itunes is slower than normal to open. I have installed all updates, restarted several times. tried deauthorising and authorising the computer. Can't do this with phone or ipad connected as I get the beach ball almost immediately.

I haven't tried this yet as I'm not sure how to do it or whether my back up will ensure that I don't lose my music. Sorry I am not well-versed in these things.
I have received a message just now that syncing is not enabled on this computer - and when I click to enable, it says it isn't possible?

  • Itunes crashes when connecting iphone

Hi all, I have an iPhone 5 running ios 7.0.2 and iTunes lastest version installed on Windows 8. The problem is, every time I try to connect my iPhone to my computer, iTunes crashes. This started occuring recently (since I upgraded iTunes to the latest version). So is it possible to get some help to fix it ?

  • ITunes freezes when connecting iPod Touch - even after restored

    Hi,
I have an iPod Touch 32GB 4th generation, I have never had any problems with it until now.
Today I tried to connect it to my iTunes (on my MacBook Pro - late 2011 model) in order to sync it so that I could transfer some of my new music and iTunes would freeze. The mouse would pinwheel and I would have to force quit (it would not respond for over 30mins if left unattended). I created a new admin user and the itunes on the other user recognised the iPod just fine. I used the other user to restore my iPod in the hopes that when connected to my library again, it would be a 'new' ipod and so it would no longer freeze. Unfortunately this was not the case, despite my library recognising an ipod in recovery mode and being able to restore it (so that I can now at least use it in its most basic form). It has subsequently frozen each time I connect my iPod. How can I fix this? Should I just wait for the next iTunes upgrade?
    Thank you
    Frances

    Hi Frances,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
The sugestions in the article below should help. They will resolve most issues that cause iTunes to stop responding when an iOS device is connected to the computer.
iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3219
    Symptoms
In rare instances, iTunes may become unresponsive when connecting an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to your computer. iTunes may become responsive again after you disconnect the device from the computer.
    Resolution
Expand All Sections | Collapse All Sections
Follow the steps below to troubleshoot the issue:
Install any available software updates for your computer.
For Mac OS X: Click the Apple () menu, choose Software Update, and follow the on-screen instructions.
For Windows: Refer to the documentation for your computer for instructions on using Windows Update to update your computer.
Update iTunes to the latest version.
For Mac OS X: Click the Apple () menu, choose Software Update, and follow the on-screen instructions. You can also download iTunes from the Apple website.
For Windows: Use Apple Software Update, or download iTunes from the Apple website.
Test with automatic syncing disabled.Reconnect your device and test to see if the issue still occurs. If your device is recognized successfully, you may be able to isolate which type of data is causing the issue. Do this by deselecting all syncing options under each of the syncing tabs and then sync. After that, re-enable your sync options one at a time until the issue returns.
Note: If the issue only occurs when syncing data from the Info tab is enabled (For example: Contact, Calendar, Mail account or Bookmark syncing), reset the Sync History (for Mac OS X instructions see this article, for Windows see this article).
For Mac OS X: Click the iTunes menu and choose Preferences. Click the Devices tab and place a check next to option to "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically." Click OK.
For Windows: Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences. Click the Devices tab and place a check next to option to "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically." Click OK.
Check your device for podcasts. If there are any podcasts, manually delete all podcast episodes from the device by sliding your finger across the podcast episode's name and tapping Delete. Once all podcasts are removed from your device, reconnect it to the computer, open iTunes, and test.
If possible, test to see if connecting your device to a different computer with the latest version of iTunes installed resolves the issue.
    Test with iTunes plug-ins removed.
    Quit iTunes.
Navigate to the following folder, based on your operating system:
    Windows XP:  C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins
    Windows Vista or Windows 7:  C:\Users\[username]\App Data\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins
    Mac OS X:
~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins   (The "~" represents your Home folder)
    /Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins
If any files are in this folder, move them to the Desktop temporarily.
Open iTunes and test to see if the issue is resolved. If so, you may leave these iTunes plug-ins removed. If you wish to re-use these iTunes plug-ins, consult the vendor for the iTunes plug-ins to see if any updates are available.
If the issue also occurs on a different computer:
If the issue does not occur on a different computer, or no other computer is available to try:

Also tried the advice on another thread (by nba) that said to reset file locations in iTune, Preferences, Advanced, and deleting some iTune files under Library/Preferences. Did not help.

  • Itunes freezes when syncing iphone

I've just got a new pc laptop 64bit windows 7, have downloaded the latest 64bit itunes and have a brand new 32Gb 3GS iphone.
When I attempt to sync my iphone, itunes freezes and I have to close it using task manager. I have read on the internet other ppl have had this problem.. but so far haven't found a fix that works for me.
I've tried re-installing itunes and have restored factory settings on my iphone (frustratingly), but nothing seems to work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.

SOLVED for me. I had the exact same problem and spent countless hours deleting apps, reinstalling Itunes etc on two windows based laptops and a new iMac. I was ready, after months of this, to go into an Apple store when I found a post on a website suggesting leaving the Iphone connected for hours. I connected my Iphone 3Gs, made sure nothing else was running and that the system wouldn't power down under my power saving settings. As usual Itunes froze (says "not responding" under "force quit" or ctrl-alt-del) but I walked away and the next morning - tada - Iphone was recognized and no problems since then. So give it a shot - I wish I had known it was that easy - all these months of rebooting and trying to find the solution online ! Lynn

  • ITunes Freezes when connecting ANY iOS device

So, my issue is exactly what the title describes, but let me give some more detail.
I have a MacBook Pro (OSX 10.9.5) that's currently running iTunes 11.4. My issue is that every time I connect any of my iOS devices (or my wife's or friends') as soon as iTunes begins to detect an iOS device, it freezes. The computer doesn't freeze, the device doesn't freeze, just iTunes - as soon as the device name pops up in the upper right corner of iTunes, the program freezes.
This issue did not happen on previous versions of iTunes (I think on 11.2 and earlier), but as soon as I updated, it started happening. For a while, I just kept a previous version of iTunes so that I could keep syncing my devise, but when I got my iPhone 5 (recently) it won’t requires the newer iTunes version, so I can’t keep doing that.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes multiple times with no success. I have tried resetting the devices, making sure all updates are done on all devices, etc.
To be clear, I have tried this with multiple different devices (iPod Touch 3rdGen, iPad 2, iPod Touch 4thGen, iPad Mini, iPhone 5) and it does exactly the same thing with all of them – it does not happen with any of these devices when connecting them to my wife’s PC or my work MacBook Pro. This makes me assume that it is an issue with either my Macbook Pro, or with how iTunes is installed on it.

  • Itunes freezes when connecting and ipod does not show up

When I connect my nano 3rd gen in windows vista using itunes 9 my ipod does not show up and itunes freezes. the ipod remains with the connected screen and I cannot close out of itunes. Any help would be wonderful... Thanks!!

I have (finally)solved the problem with my iTunes freezing! Here's what I did:
1.I backed up my entire music library to an external hard drive.
2.Then I completely uninstalled iTunes 9 from my computer.
3.After a re-boot I then completely deleted my entire music library. (this can be a little scary so I double checked my music library back up on the external drive)
4.I Googled iTunes 8 and found it at
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/28/apple-itunes-8-2-and-quicktime-7-6-2-di rect-download-links/
    5. I downloaded it but before I installed it I copied my music library back to my computer. I did not copy everything that was in my original iTunes music folder however, I only copied the music, album art work, applications, games,Tv shoes, and podcasts folders. I placed those folders in a new folder called iTunes on my computer. I did not include any of the iTunes database files eg: .itl / .xml / or .itdb files as these were created in iTunes 9.
    6. Now I opened iTunes 8.2 and added all of my music and other media content.
    7. Next I attached my iPod nano to my computer. Then Windows automaticly open a window asking me if I wanted to scan for problems or continue without scanning. I had windows scan for problems and once that was done my iPod nano began to sync. Oh what joy!
I think, and this is only a guess based on what I've read here on Apple's discussion pages and my own experience, that there is a problem/conflict or bug with iTunes 9, Windows Vista and the 3rd -4th generation iPod. I will NOT be upgrading to iTunes 9 until Apple has addressed this issue. It seems to me that there are a lot of people having similar issues.

  • ITunes freezes when connecting ipod

I just recieved my 60GB iPod video and followed all the instructions exactly as supposed to...
Step 1 was loading the software, which I had no problems with
Step 2 was importing music to my computer, which I already had from my previous iPod
Step 3 was connecting the iPod, this is where I ran into problems!
I connected the iPod and the "Do not disconnect" screen was flashing on the iPod as it should, but iTunes did not open. When I tried to open iTunes myself it was frozen. I also tried to see if the iPod was appearing in windows explorer but that was frozen too. When I disconnected the iPod, iTunes and windows explorer began to run perfectly. I've spent 3 hours reseting, reloading and restarting everything but nothing has worked. Also, my laptop is very new so I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. If anyone knows what to do please let me know!

I am having the same problem of my PC freezing when I plug in my 60 Gb iPod. My PC is runnging Windows XP professional. If the iPod is plugged in to the USB port everyting but the mouse freezes. As soon as I unplug the iPod the PC works perfectly. I uninstalled iTunes and the iPod utility and I still have the same freezing problem when the iPod is plugged in. I have a feeling their is a conflict with the iPod and my USB which is USB 1.1. When I plug the iPod into my Sony Vaio laptop everthing works perfectly. I am gooing to get a USB 2.0 and try that next. .

  • SOLUTION (Potential) iTunes Hangs when Connecting iPhone or iPad - Win 7 64 bit

Ever since upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit, I have had an issue with iTuneshanging EVERY TIME when I connect my iPhone 4 or iPad 2 (iTunes Version on myPC is 10.2.2.12) - it will not respond until I disconnect the device theniTunes works again, until a plug in a device..... very frustrating as I can'tsync my devices.
I may have found a solution online and present it here in hopes that ithelps others with this issue (And based on a Google search, there are MANY,MANY others having the same issue).
"Run iTunes "As Administrator" every time you openit. - To do this, right click on the iTunes icon on the desktop and choose"Run As Administrator" - you should only need to do this once and itwill remember the setting."
I did this and now when I launch iTunes from the Desktop Icon Windows givesa pop-up saying "Are you sure you want to run this program asAdministrator" - I just say yes and iTunes opens, it recognizes my devicesand syncs without any issues, I have been running like this for 6 days nowsyncing both devices multiple times without issue.
    Hope this helps.

    Thanks, it certainly does.
My iTunes has this exact problem with my 3GS, which only started since the last itunes / iOS upgrade.
Initially I got it working by changing the sync cable's usb port, but this isn't very reliable.
    Your solution however works perfectly.
