I have recently bought a new laptop as my old one broke. I have plugged my ipod into my new laptop and downloaded itunes. It recognises my ipod, but I can't find my library and I don't know how to retrieve it. Can anyone help me??!

Did you have a back up of your library to transfer to your new laptop? If not and you have all your songs on the iPod you'll need to copy them from there. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You will need to copy the whole iTunes folder which is in your user profile on the old computer in Music folder.
Before you do it make sure iTunes are updates on the old computer and it works without any problems.
This will copy all your media, music, movies (provided you did not change the default location).
After the migration you will need to sing in to Apple store again with your Apple ID
and also authorize your new computer (both done from the tom menu bar in Store.
Once you are done please deauthorize your old computer (the same menu path) if you are not planning to use it anymore.

AAll of your iTunes purchases can be re-downloaded again. Log into iTunes Store, select the Purchases tab for Apps, Music, etc.
if you've been syncing your old iPod with iTunes, you can restore everything to your new iPod from the old backup.

You should copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

I used a transfer cable to copy all my pictures and documents to my new computer over a year ago, but iTunes music would not transfer. I just downloaded iTunes again on the new computer and went through the weeks of spare time to upload my CD collection and have bought a lot of new stuff from the iTunes store. But I would really like to get songs from my old computer as I had a lot of CD's that were lost or stolen and they were on there. My ? is this: If I make a back-up of the library from the old computer, can I load it on the iTunes on the new computer? Will it create a ton of duplicates as I had a lot of the same CD's on the old computer as well? I beleive I had the same apple ID on the old computer if that helps with validating whether or not this is my library or not... Tell me your thoughts and suggestions on how to get my old library merged with my new one with out a lot of duplicates!

That's not the way it works.
Simply copy the media from the old computer to the new computer.
If new content had not already been added to the new computer, it would be a simply matter of moving/copying the ENTIRE iTunes library and then selectively starting iTunes by pointing it to the existing library file.
Since new content has been added, the only thing that can be done is manually copying the content from the old computer. Then in iTunes select File > Add folder to Library.
Playlists will not transfer this way. Apps, Podcast subscriptions, and videos should transfer without any issues.

How big is your library?
Can it fit on an USB jump drive?
If it can, simply copy the COMPLETE iTunes folder from your old computer to the jump drive (it's located: Main Hard Drive/Documents and Settings/Your Name/My Documents/My Music/iTunes) Copy this "iTunes" folder to the jump drive...then transfer this file to the new computer. Assuming you have installed itunes on your new computer, you'll have to replace the blank iTunes folder on your new ":C" drive with the iTunes folder from your old computer.
I've done this many times and it works flawlessly...after the file transfer, iTunes opens with my old library intact and all of my playlists, etc. good to go.
One word of caution...if you don't keep your song files inside your iTunes folder, then you will have to make sure all song files are in their "known" location place BEFORE you perform this action or iTunes will open with A LOT of "!" icons. The only way to fix this mess will be to individually search out and find each missing song link! (Not a fun job!)

I need to update my iPad to IOS 5-- or later at this point, but first, I need to transfer my purchases from my iPad to my iTunes.
I haven't done this already, because where I had iTunes previously, was on an old laptop that ran as slow as molasses. So, now with a new(er) PC, I just downloaded the newest version of iTunes to the desktop, and selected "transfer purchases", but iTunes gave me some sort of option to select, where I could either only download 'purchased items to play from the iTunes library', or to 'replace everything on the iPad with items already in the iTunes on this PC'.
When I downloaded the latest iTunes on the new PC, it automatically pulled in any music i already had on the computer, but I dont want this to replace everything I've purchased from iTunes, or what I have on my iPad currently.
What do I do to transfer? And, then to sync?
Do I need to disable the iTunes from my old laptop?
How do I ultimately update to the new operating system?
