Itunes from Windows XP to new IMAC and  IPOD

I had a 4th generation 20 gig IPOD that broke and I have Itunes and all my music on a Windows XP machine. I recently purchased a new IMAC and I'm going to purchase a new 5th gene Photo IPOD to use with my new IMAC. Does anyone know if I can backup my music from the Itunes on Windows Xp and install/restore all my music files on Itunes on my new IMAC, and then connect the new IPOD to the IMAC. Is this possible somehow? I have over 2300 songs in my music files on Windows Itunes, none of them have been purchased from the Itune store, they are all from my own CD's. I want to transfer everything to the Mac but dont want to have to redo my whole music files on the Itunes Mac. Thanks.

There is a good general guide to switching from Windows to Mac at the following link that touches on moving music as well: How to Move to a Mac - Get your stuff from your PC to your new Mac
There are also these guides:

Don't forget by the way if you have purchased any tracks from the iTunes Music Store to deauthorise your old PC if you are disposing of it so you don't use up your 5 allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • Transferring iTunes from Windows PC to new iMac

    Hi guys,
I know this has probably been asked a hundred times but I cannot seem to find a definitive and straightforward answer.
Basically I have just bought a 27" iMac and would like to transfer my iTunes library and iPhone settings across to this beautiful new machine from my Windows XP PC as painlessly and as easily as possible.
I have been researching this and some people say download the content to a separate hard drive, others say use an ethernet cable, others say use homeshare - understandably i am a tad confused.
Any help, or a pointer to an idiot-proof guide would be extremely beneficial, I can't believe Apple don't have a step by step guide to doing this, seeing how soo many people are making the switch!!

That article is very helpful, but leaves out one important step: how to format the hard drive. Assuming you don't have a network connection and don't want to copy multiple GB to CDs (the PC doesn't have a DVD drive), then what? Copy to a hard drive. But how do you format that drive to work on Mac and Windows? Windows won't recognize a Mac-formatted drive. And I know Mac will only recognize one particular format, but I don't remember which one. So how to I set up a hard drive for a transfer?

  • How to transfer Itunes library from Windows XP to new Imac?

I have just purchased a new Imac and want to transfer my Itunes library from my Windows XP pc to new Imac. I have both computers on an Airport wireless home network. If this proves to be difficult, can I use a jump drive? Thanks
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I just got a shiny new Mac, and don't want to lose my music library!
No need! iTunes for Windows is almost exactly identical to iTunes for Mac, and switching over is actually very easy.
First thing you're going to have to do is figure out a data route. Although you can technically use CDs or DVDs, in order to best transfer all data, including playlists and ratings, you'll want another method.
If you have a network set up, you're good to go.
An external hard drive will work as well, just remember that Windows won't read a Mac formatted disk. The iPod is also an external hard drive, and can be used in the same way.
    <hr>
Once you have the method set up, you're going to have to prepare iTunes.
Open iTunes for Windows, and hit Edit>Preferences>Advanced, and make sure that the folder listed is \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music.
Next, hit Consolidate Music Library. This action is irreversible, and it will make sure that all of your music is put in the aforementioned 'iTunes Music' folder. Shut iTunes, and move on.
Now you're going to have to move the info to the Mac. If you have an external hard drive, drag the iTunes folder, located within My Documents\My Music onto it. If you have a network set up, copy the iTunes folder to a location that can be accessed by the Mac.
Now, on the Mac, open either the external HDD, or the network folder, and copy the folder iTunes to the Home/Music folder.
Start up iTunes on the Mac, and everything should be in place.
    Cleaning up
If you have music purchased from the iTunes Music Store, you're going to have to authorize your Mac. If you're not going to be using your Windows machine for iTMS songs anymore, you may want to deauthorize it. Either way, this article has all of the information you need: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93014
If you're not going to be using the Windows machine for music, you can safely delete the music from it, as it is now on the Mac. However, unless it is actually bothering you there, there's no reason to do so. Redundancy is great for data.
    About an iPod:
First, Apple has a doc about using the iPod to switch. It has some great info about moving your documents, emails, etc. However, the method of music transfer there doesn't save most of your library data.
Second, you may want to reformat your iPod for the Mac. The advantage, basically, is some transfer speed. The disadvantage is Windows' inability to read Mac disks without 3rd party software. Either way, the doc on formatting (restoring) is here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983#One

  • WISH TO TRANSFER FILES AND ADDRESS BOOK FROM WINDOWS 98PC TO NEW IMAC.

HOW TO TRANSFER FILES AND ADDRESS BOOK FROM WINDOWS PC 98 TO IMAC .

For addresses, general answer is to use Export function in your PC program and export in .csv (comma separated value) format. Then open Address Book app on new iMac and choose Import from File menu and locate the file you exported (on USB stick, or by email, for example). Should work! You've heard that before, right?

  • Moving Itunes from External HD to new imac HELP!

HELP!! Kept my iTunes on an external Hard Drive as eMac had little space! Need to move all my iTunes from the External drive to iMac - but it ain't working - any suggestions or solutions easy to follow instructions would be great
    Any help appreciated!

1 - if you are upgrading form iPhoto 6 then you can not go ofrward until you complete the upgrade - and with all versions of iPhtoo when you upgrade you can not go back - do always upgrade on the new system keeping the original in case of peoblems
2 - I have no idea how you transferred the iPhoto library - but the best way is to drag the iPhoto library from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system, run the iPhoto library upgrader and launch iPhoto

  • Made the switch from Windows with a new iMac now my iPhone won't sync with erasing

    Hello!
I migrated from an older PC to a new iMac and when I try to sync my iPhone (which was synced on the old PC ) it wants to erase all my iPhones (3GS) data in favor of what currently on the iMac's/iTunes.
I deauturized my iTunes account on the old PC before switching, was there something else I may have missed?
I'd like to be able to import all the app and music tht's currently on my iPhone into my new iMac/iTunes.
Is there a way to acheive this?
            BTW I LOVE MY IMAC!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance for any comments/advise...........
            D.

If you transfer your iTunes library from your PC to your Mac following the instructions included with this link, no iTunes content on your iPhone will be erased with the first sync with iTunes on your Mac.

  • How can I transfer my iTunes library from Windows to my new Macbook and retain my iPhone contacts?

    Hello,
I am running iTunes on Windows Vista with music, videos. This is paired to a 3GS which has many contacts on it. The iPhone is regularly synced and backed up.
I have just bought a new MacBook Pro and want to transfer my entire iTunes system over. I see that I can transfer the music library over with Home Sharing. I want to ensure, however, that when I sync my iPhone with my NEW MacBook Pro, that all the data is retained. I am most concerned with losing the contacts on the phone.
Does anybody know how I can do this? I just want to wholesale copy the iTunes environment onto my new machine, I guess.
    Thanks,

Contacts (and Calendars) are not part of iTunes. iTunes is simply used to sync them from whatever apps you are using.
This is for Mac OS 10.4 but it will work for whatever you are now running.

  • Transfering itunes from old emac to new imac

I recently upgraded to a new imac.  I transfered my files however it would not let me transfer my itunes, i believe because it was an older version.  I was able to transfer the music, however my playlist are gone, shopping cart, and purchased music etc.  I am not sure how to transfer the old into to the new computer.  I am also concerned about connecting my ipod to the new computer because I am afraid that it will delete the whole ipod.  Any suggestions?
    thanks

WELL... I finished the whole transfer last night... It actually didn't take that long (definitely not as long as the iphoto transfer took)... since the new computer is so fast. You actually don't need to download the songs again... they are there... in your old itunes folder... you just need to drag them into the new itunes application...
I lost all my playlists, which is bad, but I can live with it. it will give me a chance to go over some songs again, BUT the only thing that could not be recovered is album artwork from the songs I had purchased in Emusic.... And that was a lot of songs with great album graphics.... Somehow, itunes knows how to retrieve the art for songs purchased from itunes only...
Anyway, I agree that there should have been a better way, much less painful to do this.... but your songs should still be there... And IF I'M NOT WRONG, after you imported them to the new itunes, they are stored again, and you can erase the old folder....

  • Changed from Windows lap top to iMac - and can't sync my iPod

I can't get my iPod to sync with my new iMac - it still only recognises the original Windows lap top. I still use the lap top, but have copied my itunes across to the iMac and plan to use this as my main machine.
How do I get the iPod to accept the Mac as it's host?
    Thanks in anticipation
    John

Perhaps it's me, or maybe I really am just a very old man and am unable to grasp what's going on....
My old lap top still has my original itunes library and still works
My new iMac is running itunes wonderfully well - after I copied it across. But track ratings and play count were lost. No big problem there.
But my iPod will still only sync with the Lap Top.
When I plug it into the iMac it shows up as having a Windows format. I have also read that the iPod can only be in sync with 1 library at a time. But I've completely failed to find any instructions on how to change it to recognise the iMac instead of the Windows lap top.
Do I need to reformat the iPod while connected to the iMac and then ask it to sync to that?
Is it simply a matter of 'resetting' it while attached to the iMac?
Grateful for any help - preferably in words of one sylable!!!
    Thanks          John

  • My time machine backup was created on iMac with Mountain Lion and my new iMac has Mavericks installed, will I be able to restore a backup from time machine to new imac and all applications work ok

time machine backup to new iMac

Yes, however it's always wise to update your apps to ensure you have the most up-to-date version. Use Setup Assistant to migrate your data, apps and settings to the new iMac, simply follow the on-screen directions. If the new machine has already arrived and you have already run Setup Assistant, connect the TM backup to the new machine and run Migration Assistant (a cousin of Setup Assistant) and follow the on-screen directions. You can find Migration Assistant in Applications - Utilities - Migrations Assistant or you can use the keyboard shortcut of Command + Spacebar and type "Migration Assistant".

The simplest way to transfer everything is to copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.
