ITunes Funky File Handling (in Finder)

The way iTunes manages the Finder folder structure for music is useless when trying to search for or make use of music OUTSIDE of iTunes.
iTunes does this folder/file structure in Finder:
Counting Crows
--August And Everything After
----01 Round Here.mp3
----02 Omaha.mp3
----03 Mr. Jones.mp3
...and so on
I need the structure to be:
Counting Crows
--August And Everything After
----Counting Crows - Round Here.mp3
----Counting Crows - Omaha.mp3
----Counting Crows - Mr. Jones.mp3
...and so on
The iTunes way of file naming is non-standard.
Is there a way I can have iTunes manage my library but give me the control to name the music files in finder?
Thanks for the replies.

FWIW, i wouldn't want to mess with how iTunes does its job. i'd be too afraid messing up more than the folder structure.

  • I have multiple libraries on an external drive. Somehow all the iTunes library files i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, Media folder, etc disappeared! Only the music files remain. Now when I start iTunes w/option it can't find any of the old libraries!

Help! I 'm using an old G4 powerbook, Mac OSX 10.5.8, iTunes ver 10. I have multiple iTunes libraries on an external drive. Everything was fine for a while, then all of the iTunes library files, i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, artwork folder, Media folder, etc mysteriously disappeared! Only the music files remain (thank god) So now when I start iTunes w/option key to choose a library, I can't choose any of them because iTunes won't recognize them. Because all the library stuff is missing. So can I re-create the library files? (I don't care if I lose my ratings)
Or should I create a new empty library on the external drive, then manually move all the music files to the Media folder in the new library?
I tried some stupid ideas like creating a new library just to start iTunes, then going into prefs and advanced, then under iTunes Media folder location, selecting the location of the old library on the external, to see if iTunes would then find all the music which is still there, but no workee.
I'm out of ideas, and I searched the archives.
    Help! anyone?
    Scott

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • ITunes 10.5 can't find any of my original files, even though they show in my library

I was hoping you could help me with iTunes 10.5. This update has been a pain. When I first installed it, my entire library was gone. Luckily, I saved the "iTunes Library" file before updating and copied it in place and my library appeared. But now the problem I'm having is that the iTunes can't find any of the "original" files, even though my iTunes Media file location has not changed (it's on an external network drive". When I click on the "Do you want to find the original file" I can find it in the appropriate folder. I checked the "Preferences" and under "Advanced" I re-mapped it to the appropriate location and already had the 2 boxes for iTunes organizing files checked. Then went to "File" and "Organize Library" and clicked the first check box and then got the "Copying Files" bar. When this was completed, I thought it would be able to find the original files. But I'm still getting the same error message about not being able to find the "original" files. Do you have any suggestions?

  • Song plays in iTunes, but file does not show in Finder

Bizarre issue. My 26,000+ song iTunes Library lives on an external LaCie drive. All the songs play fine in iTunes (and I can hear the drive spin up when I go to play them). However, for a few thousand of the songs, the song's file is not in the physical location where iTunes shows it to be.
An example is below... these are two song file locations from the 'Master Tune Library.xml' exported from iTunes.  Both of these files
show in iTunes, and they both play just fine from iTunes (no exclamation mark next to the song names). Yet only the first file (one ending in 1219.mp3)
is at that location.  The one ending in 1249.mp3 does not show in that location, either via Finder, or via Terminal.
From Terminal I get no results from "find /Volumes/LaCie500 -name espace_20101103_1249.mp3"  (without the dbl quotes) But if I run the same command for the 1219 file, it does find it in the expected location.  Really stumped as from where iTunes is playing ...1249.mp3.
    /Volumes/LaCie500/myTunes/Unknown Artist/Unknown Album/espace_20101103_1219.mp3
    /Volumes/LaCie500/myTunes/Unknown Artist/Unknown Album/espace_20101103_1249.mp3
    Mac Mini
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    iTunes 10.5
iTunes Media folder location is /Volumes/LaCie500/myTunes   Both options underneath for "organize" and "copy files ... when adding to Library" are checked.
    Thanks!

Try using EasyFind utility to reveal the files.
Are you absolutely positive those files exist? You have verified with iTune's summary view thatthe files is what you think it is?
Show In Finder will usually not only open the directory but also leave the actual file highlighted.

  • Can't drag files from itunes to the desktop or finder.

I used to be able to do this but have't been able to recently. Please someone else tell me if this is a change that has been made to itunes in general or if there is something wrong with my particular itunes:
I tunes wont let me drag files anymore. I can't drag to playlists. I can't drag to the finder or desktop. The only way around this is to right click or control-click and show each individual file in the finder and drag from there. Which is very annoying when I try to move many files at once.
The files are not copy protected and I have permissions open on the folders I am dragging to.
    I use itunes version 10.5.2
mac os 10.6.8 on a powerbook 2.4 ghz intel core duo

Someone? Please?? Is it possible that I am the only one who noticed this!?!?

Older Zens don't support AAC, which is the format iTunes uses for songs.
You can convert from AAC to MP3, which every media player under the sun will play.  Here's a tutorial: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-12519_7-10096807-49.html

  • HT203128 I have wma files in my Finder. iTunes will not import them. Why?

I have wma music files in my Finder (imported from a windows computer via Dropbox). I would like to import them into my iTunes on my Macbook. Is this possible?

As Jim notes, if you have access to iTunes for Windows, it can convert them into AAC or MP3, and then you can use the resulting files on your Mac.
Alternatively, you can use a 3rd party Mac-compatible conversion program.  The most popular is EasyWMA.
Note that the above two approaches only work on non-protected WMA files.  If your files are protected, the only option is to use a Windows machine to burn them to audio CD, and then rip the CD on your Mac.

  • Why does Itunes say it can't find the original file for a particular song?

why does Itunes say it can't find the original file for a particular song? and then asks if I want to locate it? I can't access a bunch of old song files. any new cds are available to me in itunes. all others are not accessible. how do i merge the new cd's with the old ones so that all the songs are playable in Itunes. thanks.

Of course, I have backed up to CD and/or external drive.
I'm wondering if you're attempting to maintain your library on your external HDD? If iTunes has been directed to use a location on your external hard drive as your iTunes Music Folder location (you can check this in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced tab) you MUST ensure that the hard drive is connected to the computer and mounted in the Finder prior to launching iTunes. If it isn't, it can cause this error to appear. This is probably one of the most common reasons this error begins to appear.
It seemed my purchased songs were the first to DISAPPEAR and I had to rebuy.(Nice scam in the bug?)
So... why not restore them from your backup? If, for some reason, this wasn't an option, you could have also recovered them from any iPod or iPhone they were currently synced to (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848), or, you can also email iTunes Store support and request a "regrant," which is a once-per-account exception they might be able to offer you and allow you to download missing purchases again.
I am now convinced this a HUGE BUG in 7.7.1. and possibly the previous version or two.
I'm not so sure... I've never run across this particular error (my library is stored on my internal hard drive, but copied to an external for backup purposes with an application other than iTunes or Finder. I don't think Apple will provide acknowledgment to issues experienced only by very small numbers of people... I'm one of those, perhaps foolish, individuals who allows my computer to download updates immediately, rather than waiting for fear of problems, and again, I've never had this error.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?
