ITunes Genre Thumbnails????

Hi,
I've created a few custom thumbnails for my iTunes Genre view.
In the Movie section, I have a two genres - Music and Musicals - each with separate Genre Thumbnails
But iTunes will not let me use both thumbnails.
It keeps "reading" Musicals as just Music, and just uses the Music thumbnail.
Any ideas how to correct this?
Cheers

Hi,
I figured out how to get iTunes to distinguish between similar genre names.
I added " <key>exactStringMatch</key><true/> " to each Music related genre in Video in the genre plist.
This allows iTunes to uses all three different Thumbnail artworks for Music in TV, Music in Movies and Musicals in Movies.
However, it does not help with allowing iTunes to use two different thumbnails for IRISH HISTORY and IRISH MUSIC.
Any ideas?

  • Bizarre iTunes Genre Duplication - Children's Music

In iTunes, I have two genre listings for Children's Music: Children's Music and Children’s Music. As you can see it looks like a slight variation in the way the apostrophe is rendered. I have tried changing the name of all of my music labeled Children's Music to another name (like Childrens Music with no apostrophe) to see if it go rid of the excessive genre listing, but they were both still present. Does the default iTunes genre list contain both the variations of Children's Music? Does anyone have a way to change this obnoxious bug?

Yes, the difference in apostrophes does make a difference. Pick the one you like, copy it, then paste into all the other ones. This ensures, they will be identical.
Just a FYI, these kind of duplicate listings are often the result of empty spaces within, or at the end of the names. The only way to spot them is to highlight (select) the name and look for extra spaces being highlighted. It is also possible that invisible/non-printing characters got embedded. These are even more difficult to spot, but that's why copy and pasting Meeks them all identical.

  • How to save itunes genres on seperate external drives?

how do i save my itunes genres each on a seperate external drives? or maybe it isnt possible and i will have to use 1 huge drive?

The iTunes folder that keeps re-appearing is due to the fact that iTunes requires an "iTunes" folder to exist in its default location, which is still your ~/Music folder. That newly-spawned folder, however, is (or at least should be) empty.
What you need to do is tell iTunes that your new default is now the Time Capsule. To do this, launch iTunes while holding down the "Option" key on your keyboard, select "Choose Library..." on the prompt, and browse for the library that you copied to the Time Capsule. Hope this helps!

  • Remove itunes genres

    Hi all..
how do you remove un-used genres in the Get Info list ?
I've sees suggestions on here already and all of then do work, you can even leave the field blank, and it will be removed, probably the quickest way, but unforunatly all of these require that content be present in the first place.
The Genre list will  show the Genres you have created but ONLY ones you've added to iTunes Libary ...
Therefore, it will NOT shows genres for for an empty libary.....  This is what i'm up against....
I have a whole heap of genres, but my library is empty..... as i removed files to rebuild..... However, I am unable to delete all generas, since not all are displayed only the last one i removed.... However, there should be about 100+ generas i created and they will show up in the list, but only when adding the file back into iTunes..
Can I just remove the genres sepereatly ?   I tried the Localized file in the iTunes.appp >> Contents >>> Rsources >> ...... but it didn't help, since i can't tell my own custom id's (if they would be in there).
Apple also pointed to me to the genre.plist in itune.app >> Contents, but thid din't do anythhing either
Apple's realy locked iTunes down to the point you can eaisy add your own Genres, but you can't remove them unless the assosiated file belonging to that genre is present in your iTunes Library.
Or maybe 'm just overlooking something here

  • Editing the iTunes genre.plist???

    Hello,
I have asked this question before in these forums, but I cannot locate it.
I have edit the "genre.plist" to included some new music and movie genres. This reverts back to the original everytime I update iTunes.
I have (or at least had) the file backed up in Documents, but I accidently deleted it and sometime ago. Yesterday I updated iTunes and, of course lost the changes I had made.
It is easy enough to fix, but there two types of entry that always causes me problems - genre titles containing the same word and genre titles containing symbols (specifically the ampersand).
Examples would be 1) "Rock" and "Rock 'N' Roll" - these clash because the word "Rock" is the first word in each title (if there was a third genre, eg. "Classic Rock" there would be no clash as "Rock" is not the first word)
                                  2) "Scores & Soundtracks" - the ampersand is not required in the "genre.plist" (in fact it will cause iTunes to not be able to display genre artwork thumbnails) and creating two seperate entries in the "genre.plist" linked to the one thumbnail does not work.
I know that these can work in iTunes, but I can never remember how I made work.
Anybody know how to do this?

    eagelat wrote:
Finally solved this - the key is to put entries with the same first words in alphabetical order. ampersands replaced with spaced (my genre is Rock&Roll)
    <dict>
                                  <key>matchString</key><string>rock</string>
                                  <key>resourceFile</key><string>genre-rock.jpg</string>
    </dict>
    <dict>
                                  <key>matchString</key><string>rock roll</string>
                                  <key>resourceFile</key><string>genre-rockroll.jpg</string>
    </dict>
    Hi eagelat,
I followed your instructions for the plist.
In iTunes, I changed the genre of Rock 'N' Roll to Rock & Roll.
This showed the thumbnail for Rock. I changed it again to Rock&Roll and the thumbnail is just one of the music tracks cover art - it doesn't use the thumbnail that I have in Resources.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers.

  • Itunes genre

    Hi where,
i have some trouble with my library, especially the "sorting".
Often i play music by genre on my iPad or iPhone. Then i select by ex. the genre "Dance", i find "classical" music, because the album interprets are "various artists". Thats the first problem.
The second, i checked my library on mac and see a mess ; same album same interpret but different genre. i clicked on the track, then the genre changed to the right description - crazy.
The third: then i'm syncing my iPad or iPhone, however apple or itunes overwriting the genre description. Example: i have some tracks from different artists and liek to hear that together. Generating/overwriting all these tracks with "Hip/Hop" to hear it together. After syncing, some tracks are "Hip/Hop" other "Hip/Hop/Rap".
    Have no idea whats wrong.

2014 discussion about edited tags for Store purchases reverting to originals - https://discussions.apple.com/message/26077896 - edited tags are still present in the media file but revert to the originals in the iTunes library file.  Workaround is to refresh tags so media file tags are re-read and used in library file.
One thing to note is labels are stored in two places.  They are stored in the library database file but they are also stored in the media file itself.  It appears what is happening is library file labels are being reverted by iTunes to what is in the iTunes Store.  These are not being changed in the media file which retains your edited version.  As is standard with iTunes, when you click on a track, iTunes does a quick check with the media file and in this case sees your edited label and changes the database file to match, thereby going back to your edited version.  We don't know why the database alone is being updated but there must be some kind of internal reference label for each purchased track that iTunes is using to match it to the original in the iTunes Store.

  • ITunes Movie thumbnails missing

I recently went into iTunes (11.1.5) and noticed all of the thumbnails in the "Movies" library are missing.  If I right-click on the movie and click on "Get Info" , the movie thumbnail is visibile.  If I do nothing more than hit cancel out of the properties of the movie, the thumbnail shows up for that particular movie, as if it re-establishes the link.
I've tried re-starting iTunes and restarting my computer with no success.
Is there a way to re-establish the link so all movie thumbnails show up without doing this for each movie, such as an iTunes repair, or iTunes rebuild?

If you have iTunes 10.6 and are in the US, you can now download preiously purchased movies.

    This doesn't make sense ...
The current iTunes is version 12.0.1.  It runs on OS X 10.7.5 or later.  I'm not sure what's going on ... maybe you have a system disk with very little space.  Maybe you have another computer in the mix running a later iTunes.

  • Any way to change default point where iTunes creates thumbnail for videos?

Is there any way to change the default point in time where iTunes creates its own auto-generated thumbnail previews for videos when you drag them into your Library and view them all using the "Movies" section in the left panel?
So when you look at them all using Cover Flow view, for example.
I know you change the thumbnail for each video after the fact, or even batch-add thumbnail artwork for several videos at once, but that's not what I'm after...
I have a WHOLE LOAD of videos that are non-sensically named (Y1_D1-4, etc.), and I want to import them all into iTunes.
Of course I will also need to change the NAMES of these movies as well.
They are actually TV shows, which illustrates the following point:
What all these "movies" have in common is that their intro sequences are all EXACTLY the same length, before they then show the title of the particular show.
Now, if I could get iTunes to use this point in time as it's setting for creating default thumbnails, that would help me in two ways:
Firstly, it would create the thumbnail that I want, and secondly, it would also show me the title of the show, so I could easily re-name the file there and then, without having to scrub back and forth, to find the name of the show.
    Any clues anyone...?

I'm wondering, is there any way to change this so I don't have to click three times to get to that last point, where the cursor is placed in the filename and ready to edit?
I don't have a direct answer to your question, but you can speed up what you're doing by pressing the "return" key after the first click instead of pausing, then clicking a second time.

  • No content in some itunes genres

Ihave been having problems with this for the past few months, but just upgraded to a new Iphone and still the problem persists. I have a large music folder of over 7000 sonds which I synced to my iphone. When I search for some of the music via genres it seems that some of the genres are empty, telling me there is "No Content" even though I am sure the songs have synced over. Also in itunes my music is sorted into genres, but when they transfer on to my iphone, so of the albums are all over the place and not in the genre they should be. Does anyone know how this can be corrected. It used to be fine, but seems to have gone wrong after an update somewhere along the line ????

Your iOS devices can sync with your iMac using Wi-Fi - this will copy the items you select to sync to your iPhone and iPad.
But this kind of syncing  is not working between Macs. There you need iTunes Match to sync your iTunes Libraries between the Macs with iCloud. Alternately, you can simply copy the library to the other Mac.  (Moving your iTunes library to a new computer)
To restore your other media, you can download past purchases - see:  Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Itunes Genre pull-down menu

I'd like to customize the genre pulldown menu. currently there must be nearly a hundred genres and I'd like to have just the ones I'm using available. I've read in other posts you can't change the built-in genres (of which there are many I don't wish to use). I've also read customized genres will remove themselves if nothing in your library is using it - this is not true, I've a dozen or more old genre names I no longer use which remain in the pull-down menu.
There must be a way (to hack into package contents somewhere if nothing else) to customize this list, or a program which will do this??
Anyone know or have any ideas? I've about 70GB of music and am very anal about my music files and would like to streamline my options if I can.
    Thanks.

some of the genres seem to be built-in and nothing will remove them. I have absolutely no "easy listening", but the genre is still there.
About the only thing I could suggest about old genres that you're not using anymore, click on the browse button in the upper right and look to see if those genres are actually gone.
I'm probably just as anal about my about my music files as you are. Those "extra" genres only show up when you look in the drop-down menu in the Info panel for that song. I'd just ignore those extra genres since the only place you have to see them is in that drop down box. They don't show up when you're browsing. If they do then you must have some songs using those genres. I know that's not much of a suggestion. If anyone else knows of a way to remove the unwanted genres I'd be happy to hear about it too.

  • Movie bought on apple tv wont play in itunes, no thumbnail either, says it's on my Mac when checked on iTunes store?

Bought movie using ATV. iTunes libraray on NAS, everything else works OK, (incidentaly, new iTunes 11.0 is slower to respond over sharing and on my Mac than previous version )Want to put the movie put on my 3Gs, iTunes 11.0 won't allow me to convert it to do this, nor will iTunes play it, despite the iTunes store saying it's already loaded onto my Mac? iTunes says it needs Quicktime which is not supported by Itunes 11.00! Plays fine on ATV!?!?!?? Any good advice greatfully received.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.

  • ITunes AudioBooks Thumb Genres!

I have 10 audiobooks 6 Novels & 4Scientific. Anyways I typed the genre of Scientific books to Science & It gave me a Default iTunes thumb I changed the 6 other audio books to Novel or Fiction but it didn't give me a default thumb because there is no genre in iTunes with the title Novel.
Anyways I want to know all the genre titles iTunes has a default thumbs for!
    Message was edited by: busta5000

Thumbnails for any Music and Movie from the iTunes store are guaranteed.
Strangely this is not so with Audiobooks, Podcasts, and Apps. iTunes does not, to my knowledge, *+_does not_+* have thumbnails for every single audiobook category that they sell. I have a History audiobook, which gets a thumbnail, but a Fiction audiobook which does not.
If you control-click your iTunes application, click Show package contents, and navigate to Contents>Resources, you will find the little thumbnails that iTunes uses.
These thumbnails (and some variation in the name) are meant to be used across Music, Audiobooks and Podcasts:
*+Alternative, Animation, Blues, Books, Business, Childrens, Christian, Classical, Classic, Comedy, Country, Dance, Drama, Education, Electronic (music genre - not electronics), Engineering, Fine Arts, Folk, Health, Hip Hop, History, Holiday, Humanities, Jazz, J-Pop, Kayokyoku, Kids (same icon as Children), Language, Latin, Literature, Mathematics, New age, Non-Fiction, Pop, R&B, Reality TV, Reggae, Rock, Science, Sci Fi & Fantasy, Social Science, Soundtrack, Spoken, Sports, Teens, Vocal, World.+*
Here's one thing to keep in mind - The way iTunes uses thumbnails are confusing. For example the thumbnail for Health & Medicine. There is no "Health & Medicine" category anywhere in the iTunes store. However "Healthcare & Fitness" (App Store), and "Health" (Podcasts) all use this icon. Another example is the R&B icon: iTunes only sells R&B/Soul, which still uses the R&B icon. Also, some don't even have a match in the iTunes store - iTunes doesn't sell "Engineering" yet they still have an icon
    Here's how to categorize something:
    1. First try to categorize it based on iTunes's Genre section under it's own section (for you it'd be Audiobooks).
    2. If there is none, look at a different section, e.g. Apps. The closest I could get was Books, which I guess is the smartest alternative.
iTunes appears to be adding thumbnails, and keeping your Genres as close as you can to the iTunes store genres is a good idea.
Ask me if you don't understand anything - I could have worded it better but I think this explains a lot.

In fact you are perfectly right: a repair of the itunes installation solves the issue.
Little warning : under win 7, if in the add/remove programs , when you double click on the itunes ico, the only option is "uninstall".
If you want to repair or modify an installed program, you need to right click on the icon & then will appear the 3 choices: uninstall, modify or repair.
