ITunes hangs on "Backing up" after 4.2 update?

I just updated my iPad from 3.2 to 4.2, which appeared to work properly. The backup initiated by iTunes is hanging, it's been stuck at about 95% full for about half an hour now. Spinning beach ball and no response from iTunes. The iPad has the black screen with silvered Apple logo and shows the same progress bar, about 95% complete.
Is it time to force-quit iTunes? Should I wait longer?
Can force-quitting during a backup do any harm?

I'll answer my own question, in case anyone in the future cares...
2-hour Apple tech support call with one elevation to a higher level...
It appears that one app installed on the iPad was installed by an IT pro at my wife's office, with his account and password. When I tried to update the iOS and sync the iPad, it was hanging while backing up the app whose account was not present.
I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, which did not affect the issue. I did a reboot of the (crashed, frozen) iPad, and it got partway through startup before appearing to crash again (not connected to the computer). After about a half an hour, the startup process suddenly completed itself, and the iPad was back, working normally. But it still wouldn't sync.
For that, I had to delete the app that had been installed by the IT guy's account. Now the iPad syncs normally, and everything's working.

Not all locales come with a dictionary installed due to licensing reasons.<br />
If you do not have the en-US locale then check that you have a dictionary installed (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and selected.
You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.<br />
You can open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.<br />
Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a tick.<br />
You can enable or disable spell checking globally:
* Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"

ITunes hangs when backing up

I am trying to back up my iphone 4 so that I can update to the new iOS 5. I have downloaded the new iTunes version 10.5 and since then I can't access the iTunes store or backup my device. I have removed and reinstalled iTunes, I have moved the last backup file to a different location and nothing. Any help?

In windows 7, click on your start menu, go to accessories, right click on the command prompt icon and choose "run as administrator". Once it opens, type in the following command...
netsh winsock reset
hit enter and it should say something like winsock reset successful now reboot your computer.

ITunes and Quicktime hanging on start up after Quicktime v7 update

Heya,
After updating my OS from 10.3.4 to 10.3.8 then 10.3.9 and installing Quicktime v7 iTunes and Quicktime hung on start up. Neither load. All i wanted was to get ready for adding video to my iPod and now nothing loads at all! Any Ideas??

Same exact problem here. Obviously this is not our computers, it's a bug in the new release of itunes and/or quicktime.

The iTunes icon and cable means that the phone has gone into recovery mode (e.g. If you can't update or restore your iOS device)
You will need to connect the phone to your computer's iTunes and you should then be able to reset the phone back to factory defaults, and you can then restore/resync your content to it.

ITunes won't recognize iPod after trying to update to iOS 5?

Today I tried updating to iOS 5, and I had to update to iTunes 10.5, so while the update was downloading, I left my room, when I came back, iTunes said it was finished and I then decided to update my iPod to iOS 5.I had then decided to leave my room and when I came back, iTunes wasn't running anymore and my iPod had the "USB to iTunes" screen, so I tried plug in my iPod to my computer and since I'm on Windows XP, it then gave me the error noise and said that this driver didn't exsist, so I tried updating my drivers and it ended up not working, so then I tried re-installing iTunes 10.5 and then I got another message saying "Bonjour Services failed to install" then it said "Bonjour Services failed to start" then later in the installation it said "Apple Mobile Support failed to Start"
So now my iPod is stuck on that screen and my iTunes won't work.
*I'm running Windows XP 32-bit
*I have a iPod Touch 4th Gen 32gb
*I have not tried to jailbreak or do anything except use iTunes to import music

ITunes error - will not work after trying to update to 7.2, then to 7.3

I have tried to update to both 7.2 and to 7.3, but both updates have failed. Now I am stuck on 7.1 with an error, where my iTunes will not operate and I cannot uninstall because it comes up with the same error that I get when I try to install or uninstall.

You need the section at the end after "Important: A majority of customers..."
I think you need to do a full removal of iTunes and quciktime with clean up. But the important bit is to clean up the installer files with the MS Installer Clean Up Utility.
If cleanup doesn't seem to work, it is worth checking you have the right version of the Windows installer. If you find it in add remove programs, it should say "Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803)"

IMac never came back on after installing some updates and trying to restart

I installed some updates and tried to restart, but it was taking for ever so I turned it off from the main power button but sktill does not come back on, it just stays on the first white screen where you see the apple logo and the circle going around!
Very frustrating any ideas how should I start it up again! Should I take it to the shop or is there a way to finally turn on?

It worked after I did that and read the articles you, link, you provided, but I finally did the archive install and have access to previous accounts too except my pictures and videos! It has a small "one way" sign on the folder pictures of the previous user (me) and it says I don't have privileges!
Any idea how can I recover these type of folders onto a new hard drive before I proceed to a new system update?

Why doesn't itunes work on iphone 3gs after IOS 5 update?

After upgrading Iphone 3GS to IOS 5 it does not connect to the Itunes store for updates. I am able to download apps from Icloud but when I try to update apps it gives me an error that it cannot connect to the itunes store. I tried shutting down and restoring the phone. I went to settings went into the "store" logged in an out and still no luck. Does anyone have a fix for this? Please help.

Ok, so after my old dinosaur computer finally finished updating and restoring my iphone4 with the new software, everything seems ok with the exception of about 20 ringtones that didn't get restored over. So I go to replug in my phone and I get an error message saying "This iphone cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service has not been started."
WHAT???? I just updated the stupid phone for hours and now it does this? So now it's not even being recognized in my itunes window. Anyone???

Envision99 is nearly correct.
First thing to try is to re-install iTunes (download it HERE and run the installer) - but, there's no need to uninstall it first. If that does not correct the problem, you may need to remove and reinstall AMDS, as described in this linked kbase article.

The only thing that has happened from last night, when it was working and syncing just fine, and right now is that my computer restarted after an automatic Windows update overnight. The following updates were installed:
- MS Office Compatibility Service Pack 2
- Update for Windows Vista (KB968389)
- 2007 MS Office Suite Service Pack 2
- MS .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack1 and .NET Framwork 3.5 Family Update
and
- Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.63.1684.0)
I have made no changes to settings or anything, so perhaps something was changed in the course of one of these updates. I have already tried some of the basic things, including uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes and restarting the ATV, to no avail. iTunes and ATV both have been running in most current versions with no problems until now. I am hesitant to do a factory restore on the ATV, as I have done this once before and it resulted in my ATV being nothing more than an expensive brick...until my ATV magically appeared in iTunes when I purchased a new computer. Any help would be appreciated.
