ITunes hangs when trying to eject a disc

I've been stumped by this for a couple months now. At first I thought iTunes and Toast Titanium were fighting for control of the CD player, but now it happens even when Toast is not open.
I'm using iTunes 7.1.1 and about once a day I will try to eject a disc -- or even play a track from it -- and I get the spinning beachball. Force quitting usually doesn't work, but even if it does I can't get the disc to eject without a restart. (This includes using the "drutil tray eject" line command in Terminal, ejecting from Finder or using Disk Utility, which also hangs when I try to open it.) Can't find anything remotely relevant in the Console logs.
I've tried reverting to an earlier iTunes, trashing .plist files, to no avail. My CD player is NEC 3550-A, which is not technically supported for Mac, but I've had it for years and it's worked fine.

I'm having the same problem.

  • ITunes Crashes when trying to burn a disc

iTunes Crashes when trying to burn a disc I've had this problem now for a few weeks. Whenever I try to burn a CD or DVD iTunes crashes and I have to try up to 3 times until it crashes and then resets itself like if I had just installed it. At first I thought that it was because I needed to upgrade to the new iTunes version 10 but the upgrades are for Mac OS 10.5 and up. My internal disc drive no longer works so I've been using a borrowed Sony DVD RW DRU-840A USB burner with firmware SS01. I have iLike installed as well and that also has problems it has stopped loading.

    I'm having the same problem.

  • Itunes hangs when trying to uncheck encryption for iphone backup.

Itunes hangs when trying to uncheck encryption for iPhone backup. The iTunes software becomes unusable and unresponsive after entering correct password (only set up today) All i want to do is backup my iPhone before trying update to the latest ios. I have tried uninstalling all Apple software and re-installing, all unsuccessfully - still have the same problem! Essentially i have to use ctr+alt+del to even close the iTunes program, so I'm assuming there must be some sort of corruption with the encryption / password setup - neither of which have been used at all, all previous backups are on iCloud and don't have encryption. I obviously don't want to attempt a backup with these sort of issues occurring as i don't think i could trust it. Can anyone suggest a way to fix the problem, Ive tried googling all afternoon without any success - most answers I can find relate to people who have lost their passwords but don't have the software issues i am having.

Further to the issue - i thought I'd try and run an encrypted backup for fun (since that's the only option available atm) and the backup hangs as well - in fact it doesn't even technically start other than saying its backing up. The progress bar never moves at all?

  • After the last OS update Itune hangs when trying to synchronise with IPAD or Iphone

After the lst Operating system update and the last Itune update, I cannot synchronize my IPAD or IPHONE.Itune hangs.

I have a 5230.  I have had this problem (or at least, a very similar one) since I successfully added a very large amount of places into the "locations".  Following doing that, I now get a message that synchronisation was unsuccessful and it stops.  It doesn't hang the software (Ovi Maps 3.04) but it does fail to synchronise.
I've tried swapping to another SD card with an alternate installation of Ovi Maps, I've tried synchronising with a different user account, and I've tried deleting and recreating my user account.  I still get the same message.  I've also recently updated the firmware to the latest version and still have the same problem.
I haven't done a factory reset of my phone as its a relatively minor issue which I can live with, but it is annoying and I haven't found a solution.
    Sorry!

  • ITunes hangs when trying to restore

I've got a 30GB video iPod that is formatted for Windows and half of the tracks on my iPod simply don't show up in the iPod interface. So I went to restore it on my Mac (10.4.10 PPC) using iTunes 7.4.2(4) and when I click restore it unpacks the firmware and then hangs. I get the spinning rainbow ball, a pegged CPU, and nothing else happening. Leaving it for days has not changed its state. If I try to select all of the tracks on my iPod and delete them, the same thing occurs -- pegged CPU, spinning rainbow ball, and nothing happening on disk. Resets of the iPod have not helped. How can I restore my iPod or at least get it so I can manage my library again?

Thanks for the pointer to the KB article. Error 1 is missing from the list provided by iTunes (more information), but I was afraid it means hardware. Will try on another computer, but I'm afraid the phone is sick.
    Thanks,
    Manfred

  • Macbook Pro hangs when trying to boot from disc

I'm attempting to reinstall OS 10.6, and normally it works just fine. However, I got this computer, it reads the Leopard disc just fine, I restart, hold down C and it just hangs out on the apple logo for hours on end and won't boot to disc.
    Any ideas?

Spinning gear? Never in my mac years have I seen a spinning gear when booting from the disc.
You should see what is variously described as a spinner, a spinning gear, or spinning clock appear below the Apple logo during startup any time you start up your Mac, whether from a DVD or HD. The spinner looks like a radial set of lines rotating in a clockwise direction, & indicates the kernel is loading, as described in Intel-based Mac: Startup sequence and error codes, symbols.
Booting from the original snow leopard cd; I don't believe I possess the original restore disc anymore.
In your first post & in your current profile info you indicate this is an MacBook Pro 17" Core i7 model; in your second post here the "Core i7" part is missing. This makes it hard to guess which 17" MBP model you are talking about. Note that each model has a minimum OS build version requirement & cannot start up from a lower version than that. Use the chart in Mac OS X versions (builds) included with Intel-based Macs to identify which version this is for your MBP & make sure your Snow Leopard DVD runs that version or later.
For instance, if this is a Core i7 MBP, it must be a Mid 2010 model & requires at least version 10.6.3, build 10D2063a, 10D2094, or 10D2101a. An original Snow Leopard DVD has version 10.6 & will not work with it.

  • ITunes hangs when trying to sync with Apple TV - Windows 7 OS

    Hello,
I have Windows 7 RTM and every time I try to sync my iTunes with Apple TV the app freezes. It was not happening under Vista.
    What could be the reason?
    Thanks in advance,

Sure thing. I got Windows 7 'cos I'm MS partner in business. Not that I like it too much.
I just though that someone could experience similar issue. If not than I'll wait until official release and we'll see. It is strange though. All coms in firewall and antivir are open for iTunes, it sees Apple TV just fine, and everything is peachy until I try to sync.

  • ITunes Hangs when first opening

I have iMac, late 2009 i7 2.8 with 12 GB Ram. Latest Lion and iTunes. My iTunes library is on an external Firewire 800, 7200, 128 cache HD. I have 17,000 songs. Everything has worked great before. When I open iTunes, everything loads quickly. But, when I go to play a track, I get the Beach Ball for about 90 seconds. Then the track plays fine. After that, all other tracks play fine and instantly. Here's what I have tried
Rebuilding permissions (external and internal drive)
    Disk repair (both drives)
    Hardware test All OK
    SMART Status OK
    Removed all playlists
Unplugged and plugged in RAM modules (no luck)
    Changed FW cable
    Trashed iTunes Preferences
Option click iTunes to change libraries
Removed Focusrite DAC from chain to internal speakers only
All other apps work fine. I have no plug ins or smart playlists. Hangs even if I make a new user account. Please help

Well I finally figured this one out. I defragmented my external HD. iTunes is faster than it ever has been (my itunes media folder is on external drive). I ran Drive Genius and it showed that my external mirror drive was 15% fragmented. You can see specific fragmented files and everyone was an iTunes track. It took 20 hours for the softwar to complete the defrag process and my External HD is running like a dream. I guess iTunes hangs when trying to search for the location of tracks.

  • ITunes freezes when trying to close

iTunes (7.6) freezes for me every time i try to close the program. It seems to open up and work fine, however when I click the "x" or go to file, then exit, it freezes up and have to open the task manager and end the process. While it is frozen, the task manager shows it using 100% CPU usage. This is fresh, clean install of Windows XP SP2 with all updates installed. This was happening with the latest version just before 7.6 came out. I did a clean install of XP, installed all updates, installed iTunes and it froze, didn't think much of it.. thought it was just a random one time thing, finished installing all my other programs.. then today i update to 7.6 and go to close it and it happens again! I opened and tried to close it several times and it happened every single time. I uninstalled iTunes (removed old database as well), reinstalled iTunes and still froze. This has never happened to me before and am stumped on how to fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

interconnect has fixed his problem with iTunes hanging when trying to quit. He had Eset's Nod32 antivirus installed on the PC, and was able to fix the problem by using the measures from the following Eset troubleshooting document:

I updated my itunes this morning, and now I keep getting an error message when trying to burn a disc. Any ideas how to resolve this?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • ITunes Error Message when trying to eject IPod

My Ipod Classic (30GB) gives me an error message when trying to eject:
Any ideas other than "Restore Ipod"? I did this and it worked afterward with another ipod but I don't want to have to do this all the time! Thanks to anyone who can assist.

  • Keep getting error message when trying to eject iPOD nano

When trying to eject iPOD, getting error message ..."cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application". No other application is open but iTUNES. What does this mean? and are there any tricks to get it to eject?

Usually this is caused when antivirus "Grabs" the drive to scan it in the background, and/or windows itself "Grabs" the drive for indexing and things. It also happens if you play a song off the ipod thru iTUnes, then stop it.
Usually rebooting will force it to let go

  • Macbook (black) first edition hangs when trying to read Serial-ATA

My Macbook recently died on me. In thinking it was my hard disc I have installed a new one. It did find it briefly when trying to install Snow Leopard again this failed since it could not communicate with the hard disc. Now I am stuck, using the System Profiler it just hangs when trying to read the Serial-ATA device tree.
Any idea of what is wrong and if it is worth repairing it?
    with kind regards,
    Christian

Turns out that the brand new Seagate that I got was faulty. Have now installed yet another drive and this seems to have done the trick.
