Itunes hangs with 10.4.8

greetings - I am posting this in the G4 area because I am not having this problem with an identicaly configured macbook.
I did a clean install of 10.4 and updated to 10.4.8, updated my hardware drivers (m-audio) and now I have problems. Under normal use, itunes with an external harddrive (firewire) and a >160g library will hang for a few seconds every 30 seconds of play. The Activity Monitor shows a spike in reads in/sec approaching 175 (from zero) but the VM line in terminal:top continues to show zero pageouts. Ok, ran Rember and all ram is present and accounted for (750M). Disk utility shows the firewire drive (lacie porshce 240g) to be fine.
Here is the wierd part, if I restart and zap my pram, I am good for a while (I think opening and closing applications makes this stop working) and then I am back to haning until I zap my pram again. I have reset my pmu also. I should mention that I have been using this PB for years without a battery because of some undiagnosed charging problem. The big change is the system upgrade (from 10.3). I am grateful for any ideas you have.

Had the same problem, spent the whole weekend locked in a windows world (yikes). Tried getting windows to boot into the OS X drive or the 10.4.6 install DVD but neither would work. Tried everything safe boot, holding C, nothing. Got to the office Monday morning and put the install disk that came with the MacBook Pro, went through the control panel in XP picked the disc and it booted up, tested my OSX partition no problems, repaired permissions (many improper permissions) then was able to boot into my Mac partition (actually rebooted itslef twice. No problems since.

  • At the end of sync itunes hangs with message waiting for files to be transferred....iphone 4s?

at the end of sync itunes hangs with message waiting for files to be transferred....iphone 4s?-
and just sits there for an hour or more... sync is not finished, nothing happens... Any ideas?

I called tech support and they had me schedule a time to walk through the problem with an apple engineer last night.
They acknowledged that they've been getting calls about this issue but that's all they said.
Make a long story short there was no solution. I ended up backing up all my info, contacts, notes ect. to the cloud and restoring the iPhone to the factory settings, then I synced back to the cloud but did not restore from a previous back-up just use as a new phone then manually check off the media pictures, music, movies ect.
It's not the ideal way but it worked for me because I don't have a ton of stuff on the phone and I can even sync wirelessly now where's before I couldn't check that feature on in iTunes because it wouldn't sync.
One thing since you can't restore from a previous back-up make sure to manually back up your camera roll or turn on photo stream to back up photos to the cloud.
    Hope this helps.

  • Itunes hangs with itunes match in Mountain Lion

    Right!
I've seen all the "Itunes hanging" issues that Apple is choosing to ignore. So I'm adding my bitter experience to this too!
    I have:
Re-installed Mountain Lion, tried to run the latest version of itunes, and pulled down my cloud stored library. It hangs itunes, then hangs Mountain Lion.
    I have:
Created a new user, and tried to do the same....it hangs itunes...then hangs the computer.
    I have:
Tried using the rescue partition, and it ....yes, youve guessed it hangs itunes, and hangs the computer.
I don't have wirless on, and am using a network cable. I've tried using wifi....
    My machine is:
    Mac Pro
    Processor  2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  12 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)
I'm a film editor and photo-journalist hence the amount of ram.
Allof this started when Apple released Mountain Lion.....IT ALL WORKED BEFORE!
Can the developers figure out what is happening, or are they focusing their efforts on trying to create the next rich experience pioneered by Mr.Ives.
Fed up with this, I used to be proud of using Apple, however, I'm starting to like the look of Windows 8.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

Maybe this will help. If you monitor the "More Like This" box (top right), other threads appear. Opening them usually displays other threads.

  • ITunes hangs with external drives; Genius is totally impossible to setup

iTunes very frequently hangs when I am using tracks on my external hard drive. I have verified the correct xml of the library files, and the drive's permissions are good. I also recently defragged it. However, oftentimes if I am editing the tags on or simply playing a track, the beach ball comes up and does not go away. When I force quit, I cannot reboot iTunes because it remains in the dock, with an arrow under it, even though it no longer is running.
After much trial, error, and grief, I found that when I physically disconnect the firewire drive (improperly, as it's still running, and won't eject due to having its files allegedly in use), the hang magically goes away. I can then sometimes replug it back in and work again, at least until iTunes hangs once more. I am sure this is not good for the drive and its files.
This did NOT happen under previous versions of iTunes and using previous system versions (I'm on iTunes 8, 10.5.5). It is a VERY. BIG. PROBLEM.
One of its many effects is that I have not been able to get the Genius function to work on my machine, as it always hangs. The Genius setup is so slow that I've never made it much past the first step. I have an 800GB or so library, and there MUST be a way to get this to work.
Are there any quick fixes to this drive issue? If not, can Apple PLEASE correct it ASAP? Not everyone has a little bitty iTunes library that fits on the internal disk.

Bummer that this remains a problem. I suspected it was the external drive I was using and from what I read here it seems confirmed. My library is much smaller that both of the ones listed here so I wonder if it's not so much size but the external drive. I thought maybe I just had a crappy network but iTunes has been uncooperative ever since moving my files to the external drive. And I've only got about 50 gig of files. Well, I guess I don't feel so bad now. But it's still crappy.

  • ITunes Hangs With Iphone 3G connected

Hello there. Well the story goes: I drag+drop my entire music library to my new iPhone earlier in the day and when I tried to connect it again, Itunes hangs and needless to say does not ever show the Iphone although windows DOES recognize the Iphone asking me if I would like to import photos etc. upon connection. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes to try to fix the problem and to no avail.
Note: When i disconnect the Iphone from the computer, iTunes un-freezes and will show my Iphone for a split second before, of course, it goes away because it isn't connected to the computer.
Anyone have this happen to them and know the solution?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Hi
I'm having the same problem. At first connecting the iPhone 3G worked fine, but now it will freeze iTunes whenever connected. Looking at the processes, iTunes will be churning about 50% of the CPU usage. I have re-installed iTunes to no avail, and even done a fresh installation of Vista, where again it worked at first before starting to hang again. iTunes loads fine if I stop the Apple Mobile Device service, but then of course iTunes can't see the iPhone.
I do also think it might be related to Vista "identifying" the iPhone as a camera, causing iTunes to get confused.
Vista is 32 bit, iTunes is 7.7.0.43, iPhone is 3G. User is not a complete moron.
    Anyone?

  • ITunes hangs with smartlist referring to removed list

First of all great job for the performance improvement. Thank you.
Here is another problem hope you will address too:
If there is a smartlist referring to another list that is later on removed, iTunes starts to hang.
It will eventually respond but just take unnecessary long to. It'd do so for every click until the void reference is resovled. That is, it's a pain to wait for it to respond in order to fix the void references. You have to wait so long that even post a problem on the discussion forum barely kill a little of the time even after I preview the posting for so many times.
It's not some obscured situation. When we manage the smartlists, it's not apparent to keep track of what refers to what with just the layout.

Usually these issues can be resolved with updates, in this case updates from www.hp.com and a firmware/software update from sony.com
I went to HP and theres 3 "Flavors" of your laptop some have updates for the chipset/BIOS/ and USB bridge, one even has a update that directly addresses iTUnes when you do a restore on the lap. you will have to go there to find the updates for your exact model (6620DK, 6620SE, 6620TC is the 3 I seen)
Another thing you can do is make sure the laptop is plugged into its AC adapter so you know its not a power issue where the CPU is going into a "Poersaving" mode and then trying to do all this heavy work while unplugged and running on a battery

  • ITunes hangs with spinning beach

Following my update to Snow Leopard I ran iTunes Match and deleted all matched content from my iMac.
    I have almost 20,000 tracks.
Since then, on startup or after any change (add, update genre, etc.) the spinning beach ball of death locks iTunes for 10-15 minutes at a time.
I have deleted any iTunes plug ins, etc.  I have started up in safe mode.  No improvement.
The activity monitor shows iTunes as not responding.  But if I wait it out iTunes always comes alaive and dtays responsive UNTIL I make any change again.
During the lock network activity spikes, but I cannot determine precisely what is happening.  I have a suspicion the iTunes is matching / updating my entire catalog at the ITMS.
Has anyone a suggestion and/or experienced a similar problem?
    Regards,
    Alex

Okay, I think I've finally solved my problem. I moved my entire iTunes library from one hard drive to another, then I deleted everything from iTunes (selected all songs, hit delete key, but didn't delete songs from disk) and then reimported them by dragging my Music folder into iTunes.
I'm not sure if moving the songs from one disk to another really helped, but deleting and reinstalling the songs definitely did.
I actually let iTunes perform a "scan for music" to reinstall the tracks, but that never seems to bring in everything. I had to drag in all of my compilation disks and some other miscellaneous tracks. P.I.T.A.
But, the good news is iTunes no longer hangs.

First, you should have continued the discussion on the original thread. Users here do not get some type of notification when you use their name, unless it is a thread they have been contributing to.
Second, you will not get someone from Apple here, this is a user to user forum. While I cannot answer your question, I'll see if I can get Linc's attention in a forum area for senior users.

  • Why no answers to iTunes hanging with rented movies??

I have yet to see a rented iTunes movie. On TWO pc's, iTunes simply will not work with rentals. I have written customer support and they refunded my rental fees but the only suggestion I got was to use an updated QuickTime. Well folks, updating QuickTime AND iTunes made no difference. I've seen others posting the same problem on this forum with no replies. WHAT'S UP??

Finish downloading before you start watching.
Your simultaneous watching is outrunning the download, causing the screen to freeze, and when you force-quit iTunes the download is cancelled.

  • After the last OS update Itune hangs when trying to synchronise with IPAD or Iphone

After the lst Operating system update and the last Itune update, I cannot synchronize my IPAD or IPHONE.Itune hangs.

I have a 5230.  I have had this problem (or at least, a very similar one) since I successfully added a very large amount of places into the "locations".  Following doing that, I now get a message that synchronisation was unsuccessful and it stops.  It doesn't hang the software (Ovi Maps 3.04) but it does fail to synchronise.
I've tried swapping to another SD card with an alternate installation of Ovi Maps, I've tried synchronising with a different user account, and I've tried deleting and recreating my user account.  I still get the same message.  I've also recently updated the firmware to the latest version and still have the same problem.
I haven't done a factory reset of my phone as its a relatively minor issue which I can live with, but it is annoying and I haven't found a solution.
    Sorry!

  • Itunes hangs after  just listening to music with Album Art work turned on.

I have been having issues with iTunes hanging and I have to open up task manager and kill the process. It doesn't Hang my system, only iTunes. I have noticed that the itune's process is taking up about 1.4 GB of memory and that each time it hangs it is around that amount. I have almost 38,000 Songs in my iTunes folder and I have album Art work for all of them. Is there some limitation on the amount of Art work? If I turn off the Art work it will run all day long with no problem.

Not necessarily.  I was asking that cause iTunes match will upload album artwork for the first track of a CD and it wont display until after you play the track you want artwork to display for.  As far as it not displaying when being synced via iTunes, I am sorry but I don't have any idea.

  • ITunes hangs when I connect my phone

    iTunes 10.2.1.1, iPhone 3GS iOS 4.3, Windows 7 SP1 64-bit.
Short summary: when I connect my phone to sync, iTunes hangs. If I let it sit for a minute or two it will eventually crash. If I disconnect my phone before this then iTunes starts responding just fine.
    Details:
I just "flattened" my computer: formatted the drive, reinstalled the OS (and upgraded to Win 7 SP1 off of a DVD with the combined install). The computer waas fine before this, I just wanted to do some spring cleaning. My iTunes library is sitting on a server and has always been accessed over the network.
After the re-install of the OS I installed iTunes and pointed it at my library. That was fine. Then I connected the phone. At that point it was running iOS 4.2.something. I decided to upgrade to iOS 4.3. That seemed to work fine. After that when I connect the phone iTunes hangs.
I decided to reset the phone with the option to erase all content and settings. iTunes now worked ok. So I did an initial sync, telling it to set it up as a new phone. I did not sync any music at this point--I have ~22GB of music, it takes a long time to sync. This still worked fine. So then I sync'd the phone again, this time installing all the music. Again iTunes hangs.
I wondered if the library was screwed up. So I installed iTunes on a laptop (running Win 2008 Server R2), pointed it at my same library (still over the network). Then started over: reset the phone, clearing all settings & content. Sync from the laptop. It works fine. Sync the music from the laptop, it still works fine. It also seems clear that it's not a problem with the iTunes library.
Back to my original computer, the one with problems, my wife is using it logged in with her account and syncing her iPad without any problems. However, she has very little music on her iPad, maybe one ripped CD, whereas my iPhone has hundreds.
So the issue seems specific to this one computer & phone that has a lot of music on it. I never had a problem on the computer before, but that was iTunes before 10.2, iOS 4.2 (and earlier), Win 7 without SP1, ... So I've changed lots of things at the same time and am not sure which one really created the problem. Although I wonder if it's a problem with Service Pack 1. I don't have any concerns about a bad install of the SP, since I did a full install of the OS that already had SP1 integrated into it. But maybe iTunes 10.2.1.1 has an issue with SP1.
    Any suggestions?

I've been following a Windows forum about the freezing problem. It happened to us and our three iOS devices immediately after upgrading Windows 7 64-bit to SP1. There were plenty of others with the same problem. Rolling back SP1 solved it instantly. Reinstalling SP1 caused it instantly. No amount of cleanly uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime, iTunes, or any components helped.
Although I have an image of my system before SP1 that I could revert to, I didn't want to. Luckily *a temporary fix is to run iTunes in Vista compatibility mode*. The iOS device will now be recognized most, if not all, of the time. ITunes will run like molasses, but that's better than being unable to sync any of your devices ever again. (I could describe compatibility mode, but you seem PC-savvy.)
Here is the specific trouble I am addressing, although it is only part of your trouble. We plug in one of our iPhones or our Touch, iTunes hangs for a couple of minutes. Windows sees the device as a camera if applicable, but the device never appears in iTunes. It's worth repeating that Windows doesn't have trouble recognizing the device. The problem is with iTunes.
And yes, everyone tried all sorts of things with the Apple Mobile Device utility. People even tried "nuking" all their USB drivers and letting them get rebuilt on startup. The only temporary fix found so far is Vista mode, and the only permanent fix is downgrading the OS to before SP1.

  • ITunes hangs when syncing large files to network attached drives, ideas?

I've done a lot of research on my problem and have come up blank so far. This is my setup and situation. I use a macbook pro and iTunes 10, but since I use a small SSD, I do not have much room to keep iTunes media on my disk. So, I use an external USB drive, formatted HFS+ J, accessible over my AirPort Extreme as a networked drive and am trying to keep my media there by setting my iTunes Media folder location to my "/Volumes/<drive name>/iTunes/iTunes Media" under iTunes>Preferences>Advanced. For the most part this works, but there are a few gotchas that are making this setup unusable.
The biggest problem is if I try to sync a large file (for example a 250MB app) with iTunes to my networked storage, the culprit almost always being a large iOS app in Mobile Application folder, iTunes will hang with the spinning color wheel, and in the toolbar shows "Not Responding". This also hangs the Finder. After this situation, I pretty much have to force quit everything and reboot my machine to get the Finder and iTunes back to health.
So, I thought that I would try keeping the iOS apps on my local drive and just move my music out to a network drive. But iTunes doesn't allow any granular configuration of the sort (big FAIL on Apple's part), and I've read up that iTunes does not play nice with symbolic links or else I would keep the iTunes Media location set to my local drive and symlink the Music folder out to my network drive.
So, given that 1) I don't have enough space to keep everything local, 2) trying to keep everything on NAS causes my machine to fail when syncing my iPhone or trying to consolidate my iTunes library because of large file transfers over the network making thing go insane, and 3) iTunes doesn't easily let you manage your library with symlinks, any ideas on what I should do?

i assume you are connecting wirelessly to the AEBS, correct ?
as a test, run an ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN ports of the AEBS (you might want to turn off airport on your machine), then try again.
    does the problem persist ?

  • ITunes hang due to iTunes Match

My iTune hang every turn on iTunes Match.
If I turn it on, I can't download/update large application or update all. I have to update one by one and only small one that's success (<100 MB).
iTunes Match also not working on my MBP. If I download nothin but just turn on iTunes Match, after a while my iTunes will also hang. So, my songs are purchased from iTunes store via iDevices will also not be updated on my MBP.
Right now I have to turn iTunes Match off then I can use iTunes normally. Download or any update are working fine.
Error is below and I have no idea what to do. Actually the error show much longer than I paste it here If you have any suggestion, kindly tell me.
    Thank you very much

    Hi judysings
    Thanks for your help.
I tried to follow for each topic from your link. Actually it doesn't contain any topic about uploading issue.
After I turn on my iTunes Match again, the same problem appears. My iTunes hang again after iTunes Match status bar updating in a while.
Before I turned on, I've check and never seen any duplicated except from different albums.
Actually, this problem happened since a few days ago that iTunes down for the whole world area. So, my iTunes database most likely the same even before and after it down. My one seems not fully recovered.
    Anyway. Thank you very much

  • Itunes hangs when burning cd's - possible solutions

    Hello everyone,
I've had what appears to be the same problem as many many more people on this site.
I haven't got a complete fix, after 4 months of trying but I've got as far as I have with the help of Toonz and the people at Apple.
Now here is what I have found:
    1. The problem with my Itunes hanging at burning only happens if I have a mixed playlist that I am trying to burn. When I say mixed I mean a mix of purchased tracks and uploaded tracks from my cd collection. Just uploaded tracks work fine.
    2. If I just burn a playlist of purchased tracks it works fine too.
    3. If I don't control alt delete when it hangs, and I wait for up to 2 minutes, the burn evenutally kicks in. Don't do anything. Just leave it and see what happens. I was having to control alt delete to get out of the unresponsive Itunes, but by chance, yesterday, discovered that by leaving it it finally burnt my cd! This was a mixed cd with both purchased tracks and uploaded tracks.
Now, the people at Apple don't yet know why this is doing this. It only happens since version 6 of Itunes. This version (I think) was the first to introduce the "checkingplaylist" stage of burning and they seem to think that it might just be something to do with that.
Anyway, that all helped me. It is still frustrating to have to wait for a couple of minutes, but it's better than nothing. They are still trying to get to the bottom of this for me, too.
I hope this helps at least some of you.
Please give me some feedback if it has, as I'd love to know that all my efforts over the last few months could help others!
    Good luck
    Jane

    I think I'm in love...
I just spent the past 3 hours running through reinstalls of iTunes, looking at every support topic and finally found this wonderful, wonderful thread.
I am having the same exact problem with mixed playlist burns.
I also have great success with waiting for only about 1-2 minutes while iTunes shows "Not Responding". Then it fires right up and burns perfectly.
Thank you for posting this quazi solution, and it has helped me tremendously. Well, at least it has saved me from having to transfer all of my music to a new digital music manager.
I hope this issue gets resolved soon
