ITunes hangs with spinning beach

Following my update to Snow Leopard I ran iTunes Match and deleted all matched content from my iMac.
I have almost 20,000 tracks.
Since then, on startup or after any change (add, update genre, etc.) the spinning beach ball of death locks iTunes for 10-15 minutes at a time.
I have deleted any iTunes plug ins, etc.  I have started up in safe mode.  No improvement.
The activity monitor shows iTunes as not responding.  But if I wait it out iTunes always comes alaive and dtays responsive UNTIL I make any change again.
During the lock network activity spikes, but I cannot determine precisely what is happening.  I have a suspicion the iTunes is matching / updating my entire catalog at the ITMS.
Has anyone a suggestion and/or experienced a similar problem?
Regards,
Alex

Okay, I think I've finally solved my problem. I moved my entire iTunes library from one hard drive to another, then I deleted everything from iTunes (selected all songs, hit delete key, but didn't delete songs from disk) and then reimported them by dragging my Music folder into iTunes.
I'm not sure if moving the songs from one disk to another really helped, but deleting and reinstalling the songs definitely did.
I actually let iTunes perform a "scan for music" to reinstall the tracks, but that never seems to bring in everything. I had to drag in all of my compilation disks and some other miscellaneous tracks. P.I.T.A.
But, the good news is iTunes no longer hangs.

  • Safari 8.0 hangs with spinning beach ball

Have noticed that Safari 8.0 hands since upgrading to OS X 10.10. Was wondering if anyone else was experience this? Seems to be triggered right after selecting an item on a web page. Are there any work arounds or solutions? Reloaded the page sometimes works, but not always, sometimes I have to reload the page into new tab.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • At the end of sync itunes hangs with message waiting for files to be transferred....iphone 4s?

at the end of sync itunes hangs with message waiting for files to be transferred....iphone 4s?-
and just sits there for an hour or more... sync is not finished, nothing happens... Any ideas?

I called tech support and they had me schedule a time to walk through the problem with an apple engineer last night.
They acknowledged that they've been getting calls about this issue but that's all they said.
Make a long story short there was no solution. I ended up backing up all my info, contacts, notes ect. to the cloud and restoring the iPhone to the factory settings, then I synced back to the cloud but did not restore from a previous back-up just use as a new phone then manually check off the media pictures, music, movies ect.
It's not the ideal way but it worked for me because I don't have a ton of stuff on the phone and I can even sync wirelessly now where's before I couldn't check that feature on in iTunes because it wouldn't sync.
One thing since you can't restore from a previous back-up make sure to manually back up your camera roll or turn on photo stream to back up photos to the cloud.
    Hope this helps.

  • Firefox always hangs. Spinning Beach Ball appears. Must Force Quit repeatedly. Have re-installed and refreshed with no change. How to fix?

Every time firefox is launched, the spinning beach ball appears, sometimes immediately, sometimes within a minute or two, every time. Must force quit. I have re-installed Firefox and also have refreshed with no change. Unless this is fixed, Firefox is unusable. I am running OSX 10.9.5 on a 17" MacBook Pro.
I cannot access any information through Firefox, because t always hangs.

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
''If Firefox is not running:'' Hold down the option key when starting Firefox.
''If Firefox is running:'' You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    and OK the restart.
''Both scenarios:'' A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Refresh).
    Any less crashy?

  • Finder periodically plagued with Spinning Beach Ball of Death

SBBOD = Spinning Beach Ball of Death
Could someone who understands MacOS X internals please explain to me why the finder needs to wait for an external Firewire drive to spin up to:
    1. Open an app from the doc. (sbbod until the FW drive spins up)
    2. Quit an app via right clicking the dock icon of the app. (shows 'Application not Responding' until FW drive spins up then
    'quit' is the available choice)
    3. Get a running program to respond. (sbbod then app responds as usual when FW drive spins up)
Let me set the scene. I do not have 'put drives to sleep' in energy saver. Spotlight is configured to ignore all of my external volumes. None of my apps use the external volumes for scratch or anything else. I rarely if ever directly save to an external volume from any application. I cannot change the behavior of the FW drive going into Stand-By mode (I've checked with Seagate and the feature is not changeable via firmware or dip-switch/jumper settings)
My only thought is poor filesystem buffer cache management. Problem is even that doesn't make sense. If I haven't read from or written to the external drives there shouldn't be ANY in memory buffers associated with the now in stand-by state firewire drive.
The SBBOD usually only takes 5-10 seconds to go away and Finder behavior to return to normal. I know it sounds 'petty' but it definitely is a flaw in what is supposed to be (and usually is) a very responsive GUI. I've experienced this annoying behavior with the standard Apple apps (Mail, Address Book, iCal, iTunes etc) and my 3rd party apps (Photoshop CS3, Excel, Word, Cisco VPN client. I'm thinking about writing a crontab entry to 'touch' the FW drive every few minutes to keep it spun up as a workaround.
Running 10.6.1 and hoping Apple would have gotten it right with this release.

AFAIK, the Seagate bare HDs don't have that limitation. At least the 750 GB SATA, ST3750640AS, one doesn't have the standby mode. Neither do any in that family. • ITunes hangs with external drives; Genius is totally impossible to setup

iTunes very frequently hangs when I am using tracks on my external hard drive. I have verified the correct xml of the library files, and the drive's permissions are good. I also recently defragged it. However, oftentimes if I am editing the tags on or simply playing a track, the beach ball comes up and does not go away. When I force quit, I cannot reboot iTunes because it remains in the dock, with an arrow under it, even though it no longer is running.
After much trial, error, and grief, I found that when I physically disconnect the firewire drive (improperly, as it's still running, and won't eject due to having its files allegedly in use), the hang magically goes away. I can then sometimes replug it back in and work again, at least until iTunes hangs once more. I am sure this is not good for the drive and its files.
This did NOT happen under previous versions of iTunes and using previous system versions (I'm on iTunes 8, 10.5.5). It is a VERY. BIG. PROBLEM.
One of its many effects is that I have not been able to get the Genius function to work on my machine, as it always hangs. The Genius setup is so slow that I've never made it much past the first step. I have an 800GB or so library, and there MUST be a way to get this to work.
Are there any quick fixes to this drive issue? If not, can Apple PLEASE correct it ASAP? Not everyone has a little bitty iTunes library that fits on the internal disk.

Bummer that this remains a problem. I suspected it was the external drive I was using and from what I read here it seems confirmed. My library is much smaller that both of the ones listed here so I wonder if it's not so much size but the external drive. I thought maybe I just had a crappy network but iTunes has been uncooperative ever since moving my files to the external drive. And I've only got about 50 gig of files. Well, I guess I don't feel so bad now. But it's still crappy.

  • Someone with two macs pls help with spinning beach ball

Sometimes I download pictures to my MacBook from my camera and then transfer them to my main library on my G5 using photo sharing in iPhoto.
If "look for shared photos" is enabled on the MacBook and "share my photos" is enabled on the G5, I get a long hang and a spinning beach-ball in when I launch iPhoto on the MacBook The hang seems subsequently affects the G5. They both hang for a good 15-30 seconds.
While this is happening the Application Monitor shows a root process called "mds" using 99% of the MacBook CPU. Once the hang is over the mds process goes away. The G5 while still hanging simply shows iPhoto as not responding, no mds process.
I've wiped the MacBook clean, set up new accounts. Nothing seems to fix it. The question is; am I alone? Can someone else go through the steps and get iPhoto to launch with iPhoto already running on another networked mac with photo sharing enabled and not get a spinning beach-ball.
This was also a problem in iPhoto 06'. I was really hoping Apple got my feedback and fixed in 08' Maybe something is wrong with my MacBook.

    Hi.
mds is the indexing process, usually run by Spotlight when looking for files, folders, servers, etc.
that's the reason why you get the delay when seeking your images using the sharing function. Your mac is searching for the requested service (your photo sharing "server"...your other mac), and it cannot find it because of the firewall that's built in to the mac. Whether you're doing this via a wireless or an Ethernet connection, you'll need to assure that your firewalls on
both computers are open to allow that type of sharing to take place.
Take a look in your System Prefs, under the Sharing icon. Click on the "Firewall" button and, after authenticating with your password, scroll down and select the option for "iPhoto Bonjour Sharing". You'll need to do this on BOTH machines, as the port is used by each for communication.
    That should solve the problem..
    Cheers,
    Charlie

  • ARD Administrator hangs with "Spinning Wheel of Death" after Apple Updates

Help! I added the required eight Apple Updates today (11/23/09) and Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) Administrator stopped working. The installed updates are iTunes, 9.0.3, Remote Desktop Client Update 3.3.1, Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 5 1.0, Security Update 2009-006 1.0, Bluetooth Firmware Update 2.0.1, Safari 4.0.4, Performance Update 1.0, and iMovie Update 8.0.5.
Since these updates, the ARD Administrator hangs up (spinning wheel) when trying to activate it. I receive the error message:
The Remote Desktop Administrator software failed to start due to an unexpected error. The Remote Desktop software may not be installed correctly, or the computer may require a restart. [Quit]
I have tried restarts, poweroffs, etc., but the ARD Administrator stills hangs. What can I do to reverse the last ARD update?

  • Itunes hangs with itunes match in Mountain Lion

    Right!
I've seen all the "Itunes hanging" issues that Apple is choosing to ignore. So I'm adding my bitter experience to this too!
    I have:
Re-installed Mountain Lion, tried to run the latest version of itunes, and pulled down my cloud stored library. It hangs itunes, then hangs Mountain Lion.
    I have:
Created a new user, and tried to do the same....it hangs itunes...then hangs the computer.
    I have:
Tried using the rescue partition, and it ....yes, youve guessed it hangs itunes, and hangs the computer.
I don't have wirless on, and am using a network cable. I've tried using wifi....
    My machine is:
    Mac Pro
    Processor  2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  12 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)
I'm a film editor and photo-journalist hence the amount of ram.
Allof this started when Apple released Mountain Lion.....IT ALL WORKED BEFORE!
Can the developers figure out what is happening, or are they focusing their efforts on trying to create the next rich experience pioneered by Mr.Ives.
Fed up with this, I used to be proud of using Apple, however, I'm starting to like the look of Windows 8.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

  • Problem with Spinning Beach Balls

I am hoping someone can help me diagnose my issue and help me understand the log below. About every other month on my MBP I run into system slow down and spinning beach balls. I run disk utility and it tells me my disk is corrupted and needs to be repaired. I run Disk Warrior and the disk is repaired and problem goes away. For awhile. Only to return in a month or two. Getting tiring to have to keep doing this.
I needed to repair it again this am. The log of Disk Warrior (copied below) seems to suggest something is wrong with a file called .Mobilebackups under the HD. When I search the HD I cannot find this file nor do I do any mobile backups of my phone. How can I permanently resolve this?
Thanks in advance for any help.
DiskWarrior has successfully built a new optimized directory for the disk named "Macintosh HD." The new directory is ready to replace the original directory.
    Notes:
All file and folder data was easily located.
Comparison of the original and replacement directories indicates that there will be changes to the number, the contents and/or the attributes of the files and folders. It is recommended that you preview the replacement directory and examine the items listed below. All files and folders were compared and a total of 21,365,288 comparison tests were performed.
    • Errors, if any, in the directory structure such as tree depth, header node, map nodes, node size, node counts, node links, indexes and more have been repaired.

The file .MobileBackups indicates that you have Time Machine turned on but your Mac is not connected to the backup drive so it makes temporary copies for when you connect back to backup drive.
These tempoary backups can eat up all of your free space which will slow down your Mac.
How much free space do you have?
You should consider either turning off Time Machine or connecting to the backup drive on a more frequent interval.

  • OS hangs with spinning wheel

I just did an upgrade to Yosemite (from 10.7.5) on my spare MacBook Pro.  Things appeared to proceed correctly but I have two problems:
WiFi will not connect.  Did not recognize the usual connection and just hangs when I reenter the password.
The OS hangs with the spinning wheel.  For example, if I attempt to pull down the apple to verify what version is installed.
I have run disk utilities (from the recovery start-up partition) to verify the disk and correct permissions and then restarted..  Have done this twice.
(If needed, I have a full clone backup from before the upgrade and could go back and start over — but with a lot of lost time.)
    What do do?

How much RAM do you have installed? Yosemite needs a minimum of 4 GB to operate smoothly and more is better.

  • Help for slow clients with spinning beach balls.

I work at a school where we have an xsvr 105-000 running 10.5
We have about 100 eMacs running 10.4 that connect to it. They are clients running their desktops off of the server. Each student has their own account.
We are having a continuing problem that no one seems to be able to solve. The computers slow to a crawl everyday. Students get spinning beach balls when they are clicking on sites, paging or scrolling up and down etc.
If someone plugs in with a laptop that does not log into the server and surfs the web there are no problems. No delays.
    Here are my questions:
    1. Are there a maximum number of connections that an xserv server can handle. If we have 60 students logged in are we choking at at the server level?
    2. Is there some setting on the server that could be causing this? (I realize that I have provided no where near enough info for a specific here, but I am only a teacher.)
    3. Any other ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi
Good question. I'm sure there will be others with opinions and experiences willing to share?
In my experience/opinion once you get to around 60-100 users - depending hugely on usage etc - you really should be adding another server to help balance the load. Enabling lots of Services on one box and then connecting lots of clients is a 'classic' mistake to make. It does not end there. Ideally you should be providing gigabit to desktop. Ideally managed switches. You also have to look at what the rest of the network is doing. Important if your situation involves an educational environment. It might be advisable to put mac clients and server(s) on their own switch possibly?
Ideally Server and Client should be the same version although if approached correctly there should not be any problems if the Server is one version ahead of the clients.
    Mileage as ever will vary.

  • ITunes Hangs With Iphone 3G connected

Hello there. Well the story goes: I drag+drop my entire music library to my new iPhone earlier in the day and when I tried to connect it again, Itunes hangs and needless to say does not ever show the Iphone although windows DOES recognize the Iphone asking me if I would like to import photos etc. upon connection. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes to try to fix the problem and to no avail.
Note: When i disconnect the Iphone from the computer, iTunes un-freezes and will show my Iphone for a split second before, of course, it goes away because it isn't connected to the computer.
Anyone have this happen to them and know the solution?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Hi
I'm having the same problem. At first connecting the iPhone 3G worked fine, but now it will freeze iTunes whenever connected. Looking at the processes, iTunes will be churning about 50% of the CPU usage. I have re-installed iTunes to no avail, and even done a fresh installation of Vista, where again it worked at first before starting to hang again. iTunes loads fine if I stop the Apple Mobile Device service, but then of course iTunes can't see the iPhone.
I do also think it might be related to Vista "identifying" the iPhone as a camera, causing iTunes to get confused.
Vista is 32 bit, iTunes is 7.7.0.43, iPhone is 3G. User is not a complete moron.
    Anyone?
