ITunes has changed MP3 files to MP4a

Tried to convert the mp4a files back to mp3 via "create new version" but continues to make mp4a copies! Ditto for converting AAC files.

You can't edit the .itl file directly, however it is possible to use the scripting interface to reconnect the files provided they are in a predictable location. I have a script for this called SwitchLinks.vbs which you are welcome to try out, however it should be possible to reconnect things as follows.
Connect external drive & check files are visible from Windows Explorer.
Open iTunes.
Use *Edit > Preferences > Advanced* to point iTunes at the correct media folder.
Close iTunes, wait a few seconds for it to close fully and save the library.
Open iTunes.
Test that music plays.
If that still doesn't work, download my script, select a few test files and run the script. If it does the right thing select a larger batch of files and run it again. Repeat until finished.
In the long run life will be much simpler if the library files are moved to the parent folder of the media folder on the external drive. That way, as mentioned above, if you ever start iTunes with the external offline then you get a prompt to choose or create a library. Just cancel, connect the drive, and start iTunes again and everything will work as it should.

  • I try to play a song, but iTunes has changed the information on the file

After installing iCloud, my iTunes suddenly started changing the information on my music files. I would go to play one song, but another song would play instead. I have a PC. Does anyone have any idea what the cause and solution might be?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • I use itunes to store my music but I use Virtual DJ Broadcaster to play it. Somehow itunes has changed from Itunes Music Library to Itunes library. Virtual DJ does not Recognize the change.

I use itunes to store my music but I use Virtual DJ Broadcaster to play it. Somehow itunes has changed from Itunes Music Library to Itunes library. Virtual DJ does not Recognize the change. Virtual DJ  at present seeing an older version of my libraries. Is it possible to Save my last library and Playlist and re-name everything else in my itunes account so it will again show "Itunes Music Library" Past libraries are of no consiquence . I'm hoping removing everything except  the last Library on my computers will make Virtual DJ  recognize it. I tried renameing  the Library to "Itunes Music Library" but it did not work. I fear the problem is in the Registry and without the correct path I am reluctand to play around  in there. Any help would be appreciated.

Incidentally, my first thought was to map a network share from the NAS to my computer, so that my music files appear on the Z: drive, say on my computer. I could then set up iTunes to store music etc in that folder, and to copy all new items to that folder. However, if I do that, all that'll happen is that on my NAS, the library file will become out of date as I add music to the collection but not to the index.

Hi, I have just tried to download an app and my itunes has changed my country to Auckland, can this be changed without me entering my card details again.....why has itunes changed this without me doing it?, or is it a problem with io7? as all fine prior to upgrade.

  • Itunes has changed the way it stores files over the years and now i am having trouble figuring out which files are where so I can back them up

    Hi
I have backed up itunes by copying my itunes file to an external hard drive. I try to keep my large media files (like TV shows) in a separate folder so that I can keep my hard drive on my macbook from filling up.  Problem is, apple has changed the way Itunes is organized and backs up over the years.  Now I am having a hard time keeping straight what is where.  When I go to support, it has different instructions for the various versions of itunes. I  am using version 10 now but it seems like I can't see all my files within the itunes music or media folder.  I want to get everything in one place so that I can easily back up, regardless of which version of itunes I am running at the time.
I have selected to let itunes organize my files.  It keeps all the files I have purchased in one place apparently, but items I have imported don't seem to always be there.
How can I best sort this out?

I have, but if I don't have that particular external hard drive connected when my time machine backup hard drive is connected, then I don't think it is all backed up together.  It is getting too complicated to get out all this equipment every time I want to buy some music.

  • Changing mp3 file locations - how do i update / save information in iTunes?

I am getting ready to put an additional hard drive into my computer - an old 60GB hard drive from another computer to act as the slave drive - in order put all of my music, movies, and pictures onto to save space on the main hard drive for my computer (only a 40GB). What do i have to do within iTunes to make sure it will still read the mp3 files when i move them to the new drive? Will iTunes save the changes and additions that i have made to the files?
I've been working on my music library for over a month and updated all of my mp3 files to include the artist and song title, so that info will transfer with the file; but I have been working within iTunes for the past 2 weeks getting everything just right - changing artist and title names, adding artwork for cover flow and updating album information to group songs and artists the way i want. What do i need to do to save all of this within iTunes, so that when i change file destinations of my mp3 files everything stays the same? Can i select all of my songs within iTunes and back them up directly to the new drive and then delete the older versions from the old hard drive?
Sorry if these sound stupid or are easy to fix, but i just don't want to lose all of my work that i put into my music library and have to start all over.
    Thanks for the help.

What do i have to do within iTunes to make sure it will still read the mp3 files when i move them to the new drive?
    Don't move them yourself.
Point iTunes prefs -> Advanced to the location where you want to music to go.
Then go to menu Advanced -> Consolidate library.
This will copy all the music in iTunes to the new location.
Then you can delete \My Documents\/My Music\iTunes\*iTunes music folder*.

  • Prob with iTunes playing downloaded .mp3 file

    Hi,
when I download a single 64Kbps MP3 file (song) from archive.org/audio, it will save to the desktop and look something like this: dtb2005-03-04d1t03_64kb.mp3 Then I try "add to library" in iTunes (5) and the song name appears, but it will be only a couple of KB and play for a split-second - that's all ... Any help, anyone ??
    Thanks very much!
    peace.
p.s. song will play on Safari page after download, but not after saving.

thanks Mike for the response ... I don't know what you mean by "find the cached file in Safari". I did search for anything of that filename (and Spotlight just found those tiny files) - And I have now updated to iTunes 6.0.1. ... and the exact same thing happens. I just get a 1.2KB tiny file in iTunes that goes "blip" and it's over.
I've noticed that the complete song in the Safari window has progress bar with volume and play at left, then the progress bar, then at the right there is a "down arrow" pull-down menu that has Quicktime options: "About Quicktime Plug-in", "Save as Source..." , "Save as Quicktime Movie...", "Plug-in Settings..." and "Connection Speed..." .
I tried the "Save as Source" - nothing happened. Same with "Save as QT movie".
The "Plug-in Settings..." takes me to some options, many of which are over my head ---- however, there is an option to Register or Buy QT Pro ... could this be what's necessary?
Under "Connection Speed" are also many options (don't understand most of them) but I did change to the slowest speed (since I have dial-up) ... and maybe I'll try to re-download something and see if there's a difference.
I appreciate your help - odd thing is, it used to work with single songs and it has recently worked with whole shows (came in Zip file or .flac) and those worked fine ....... but I only had a couple days' opportunity to use a high-speed connection.
    Thanks again !
    peace,
    Rob

  • Adding music to iTunes library - changes to files

When I import music files into iTunes (always with the "Add Folder to Library" command), I've noticed some strange things. First, iTunes makes changes to the file by embedding the album cover. I don't really mind this, although I'd like to have the option to turn it off. Can I?
Also, I've noticed that the artist name as displayed in iTunes is different than the file name or the id3 tag. For example, if the tag says "Beatles", iTunes will display it as "The Beatles." Where is iTunes getting this different information, and is there a way to turn this alleged "feature" off?
    Thanks.

You're right - I determined that the art is there before I add it to iTunes.
The naming issue is strange. I tag all of my mp3's with a program called "Tag & Rename" (a very good program). If an artist name has a preceding "the", I always strip it out. When I add it to iTunes, it displays the name with the "the" put back in. However, the id3 tag has not been altered! If I "Get Info" in iTunes, it shows the "the" - but this is not the tag info embedded in the file (which does not have the "the"). I can get rid of the "the" within iTunes in the "Get Info" box, but again, it doesn't look like this is altering the tag info.
Other messages here seemed to indicate that when you edit the "Get Info" box, that this is altering the file's id3 tag, but it doesn't appear to be the case. Does anyone have any more insight into this?

  • How do I export one song from iTunes to a .mp3 file?

Sorry for the newbie question. I want to create a single .mp3 file from one of the songs in my iTunes library. How do I do that?
    Thanks much.

You can use iTunes to convert any copy protection free songs in your library another format. When you convert a song in iTunes it will be converted to the format that you have set to import your CDs in. Converting creates a second copy of the song in the format you have chosen which gives you the opportunity to either keep or delete the original. If you are using iTunes 8 go to iTunes>Preferences>General and click on Import Settings,, Change your Import format to MP3 Encoder for example. Go back to your library and highlight the songs you want to convert and go to the Advanced menu at the top of your iTunes window and choose "Create MP3 version": iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format
Click on the MP3 version you've created in iTunes to highlight it and drag it to your desktop to create a copy if you want to use it in another program or put it in another folder.

  • Itunes 'eating' my MP3 files?

After upgrading to iTunes 7.0 which scanned all my MP3s for Gapless Playback, 90% of my collection has been virtually rendered useless.
The tracks all do the same thing; the first 1 to 2 seconds of the track repeat themselves 2 or 3 times before playing the actual song. Words cannot describe how annoying this is; when I've just got it on shuffle and trying to skip tracks to find a song I like, it makes my ears hurt like a broken record. I have looked around forums and Google but haven't seen anbody else with this problem and the extreme degree to which it has permenantly damaged my 30 gig collection of music that I've been collecting and archiving for over 10 years.
I have tried playing the damaged MP3s in every other piece of MP3-playing software on my PC--they all do the same thing. The ACTUAL MP3 files on my hard drive and iPod are damaged, not just iTunes.
Is there any possible way to salvage my MP3 collection without spending weeks to re-rip and re-download all of my MP3s?
I am seriously never going past 6.0 iTunes again. Upgrading to 7.0 was the worst computer-related decision of my life.

Compensated!?! HaHa! For losing files that you no longer legally have the right to possess after selling the originals? LOL. Sorry 62lotus, but I have no pity for you.
jpeter1093, I feel your pain and am sorry this has happened to you. It also took actually losing several gigs of songs and photos for me to learn the importance of making regular backups of any data that is important to me.
    Good luck!

  • Can't change mp3 file association

I am trying to make mp3s open up in quicktime instead of iTunes. I tried changing the association by 'get info' and changing all to quicktime however this does not change the association.
I have also tried the following in terminal:
System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSer vices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister \ -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    This didn't help either.
    Please help!

As I mentioned, just because files have an mp3 extension does not mean that they are all of the same type, so I did a search to see if there were any rogues hiding somewhere.
I didn't see anything, so I changed the associations of types MPG3 to QuickTime, and they all changed as expected. You might try changing the associations from a new user account, or check the types of the files you are trying to change to see if they match (my .mp3 files have a file type of MPG3 and a content type of public.mp3). • ITunes not importing MP3 files

Hi, I've purchased an album online from an MP3 retailer and downloaded the tracks from the album (I've done this quite a few times from this web site).
iTunes imported them fine using the "Add folder" function, however I've found that the song is skipped on my iPod.
I've tried to play the tracks from iTunes and they just don't play. So I deleted the tracks and tried to reimport them, but the Add from Folder function just doesn't do anything - no error, no music in iTunes. Strangely, I added other MP3 files to the same folder and tried adding from the folder again, and the new tracks imported fine, but the original album tracks did not.
I have double clicked on them from Explorer and Media Player plays them just fine, so the files seem OK. I've tried adding the files individually and tried using Explorer to "Open with iTunes" - again, nothing.
This is really annoying me - has anyone else had this issue? I'm using iTunes 7.6.2.9 on Windows Vista.
    Cheers,
    Pete

OK, if iTunes can't import the file, you could try working on the ID3 tag with a tag editor or repair tool. But if you experiment, always do it on a copy.
You could try MP3 repair tool:
    http://www.drtag.de/en/description_mp3rt.htm
MP3 Tag Studio also claims repair capabilities http://www.magnusbrading.com/mp3ts/
    Remove iD3 tags

Foobar2000 has tag removal and add capabilities
