"itunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with itunes" what does this mean?

my ipod is the ipod touch 2...i dont want to restore it cos then most of my apps will be incompatible with it. :/ i was just using it and then it switched off on me and then came up with a plug and the itunes logo. i plugged it into itunes and then it said i have to restore it. what is wrong with it??? :/

Your iPod recounted an error/problem. You have to restore via iTunes on your computer.
