Itunes has disabled my dvd drive

I upgraded to itunes 9 and now my dvd player will not work and my computer does not recognize it. I had it serviced and fixed last week and it was working and the guy stated it was a problem in i tunes. When it was fixed it worked until I connected my ipod to charge it. I have uninstalled itunes and it still doesn't work. I am at a loss of what to do. I have tried working on the registry and that didn't work. Any other ideas?

This is commonly attributed to a problem with the GEAR drivers that iTunes installs. Historically, people suggested that you try reinstalling gear drivers, and when that didn't work, modify registry entries to disable GEAR (in which case burning discs is disabled and you may get a nagging message to that effect every time you start iTunes). Looks like they've since found a solution, but I haven't tested it:

  • ITunes disabled my DVD drive

I have Windows 8 Professional 64-bit and a LiteON DVD combo drive.
I went ahead and re-install iTunes. At first I didn't notice it disabling my DVD drive until I went ahead and inserted a disc and my computer isn't recongising it. But I went to Device Manager and I discovered that there's a warning symbol on the DVD drive's icon. I went to properties and I got a Code 19 error. I went to the BIOS and my DVD drive is being recognised by computer so I'm certain that the device is still functioning just that the OS isn't recognising it.
Finally I tried uninstalling iTunes and that seems to solve the problem. But since I have a few iOS devices, I need iTunes but I can't install it without it disabling my DVD drive. Any solutions?

    Anyone?

At this point I have a dvd drive, but Itune gives me a warning the registry settings for burning cd's and dvd's are missing and that I should reinstall itune. I've been in this loop at least 3 times. So, is their a fix, or I can have a dvd drive or itune but not both? many thanks for any assistance. Manny

It's probably best to first check for a device filter conflict:
iTunes for Windows Vista: Troubleshooting CD issues caused by device filters
But if you still get no DVD drive, *even when there's no filters in place but the iTunes ones,* then you're one of the unlucky ones.
At this stage, on some Vista PCs, the filters for the GEAR drivers that iTunes uses for burning and importing seem to be causing some conflicts. This article outlines your options:
Optical drives not recognized in Windows Vista after installing iTunes 7
It's probably worth keeping an eye on that document, in the interests of seeing if any new information becomes available. (Preferably information about a proper fix.)

Windows users should un-install the tryout version of PageMaker 7.0 before installing the full version.    For help installing PageMaker 7.0 after removing the Tryout version, review the How_to_Install.wri (Windows) and How_to_Install.txt (Macintosh) documents available on the PageMaker 7.0 application CD-ROM.

  • ITunes Has Disabled My CD/DVD Drive - can anyone help ?

    Hi,
I recently bought a 5th Generation iPod Video 30gb, and have some issues with the iTunes software.
I am running a fairly new (4/5 months old) Packard Bell PC with Windows XP Home and have Sonic RecordNow CD burning software.
    Here's the problem....
When I tried to load the iTunes software from the CD that came in the box, it allowed me to install it, but then when I double-clicked the icon to launch it, I just got a Windows error message (the type that says windows has encountered an error and needs to close - would you like to send a report to Microsoft Yes/No). iTunes would not load at all.
Also, my CD/DVD drive then disappeared from the system. When I ran a check through System Tools, it said that the drivers had loaded properly, but that a CD/DVD device could not be found.
So, I did a System Restore to a few days before and the drive re-appeared and worked fine.
Next step, I downloaded iTunes from the Apple website. This time everything worked fine. I spent the entire day (much to the annoyance of my wife) transferring CDs to iTunes - no problems - iPod synchronised fine etc.
Then, a day later, I decided to carry on transferring my CD collection, but the CD drive has disappeared again - system tools says that the drivers have loaded correctly, but that a CD device cannot be found (Error 41).
Any ideas - I'd like not to have to do another restore, as I presume I'll lose all the CD data that I've transferred so far. Some other websites have suggested I edit the BIOS to point the system towards the CD drive. Slightly nervous about doing this (if indeed it's the right thing to do anyway) and wouldn't really know how.
Also, I did think about un-installing Sonic RecordNow and re-installing iTunes, but then I look in add/remove programs, it's not there.
I'm at a loss - any help would be greatly appreciated.
I await a response with eager anticipation.
    Thanks,
    Jon (United Kingdom).

  • Other versions of itunes that do not disable CD/DVD drive on VISTA PC?

Anyone know if there is a previous itunes version on the Apple site that does not have the CD-disable problem when you install? I'd like to try it. Thanks!

The daemon tools are not a fix-all for this problem. I tried installing them, and all seemed to work fine until re-boot... then no more CD/DVD drive (again).

  • ITunes disabling CD/DVD Drive

I've tried installing iTunes 7.5 on my laptop and it seems to install fine. Once I restart my computer, however, the CD/DVD has an error. Windows thinks its a driver problem but when I run the diagnostic it says all drivers are up to date.

I have found NOTHING on the web that answers this problem. Toshiba knows about the problem because they have a post on their support site that deals with a "missing DVD drive." Unfortunately, the two solutions they provide do not fix the problem if you want to run i-tunes. You can re-install the driver, and if that doesn't work, you can edit the registry by deleting the upper and lower filters (See toshiba support's link to Microsoft). But then you will have to repair itunes as listed above (which then re-installs the filters in the registry), and the DVD drive is missing or has problems once again. Every time I need the drive, I go through the above process. Then I repair itunes and live without a DVD drive until the next time I need it. Is this mainly a Toshiba Satellite problem?

  • Itunes disables CD/DVD Drives

Have loaded itunes from the disc and also from the apple website. I am unable to open itunes and every time loaded it diables both my CDR and DVD Drives.

AW ANOTHER PB user. I feel bad for you guys. All Packard Bell PC users are having this issue which leads to me to believe this is a Packard Bell problem.
Dont worry, its an easy fix.
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
    Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK
Save this list because you do use a Packard Bell and it could happen again. Good Luck. If this does not work, I have another tried and tru method of fixing it.

  • Loading iTunes on new PC with Vista disables CD-DVD drive; driver issues?

There is something in the iTunes software that causes my CD-DVD drive to stop working and cannot be recognized as a device by Windows. I suspect that iTunes is replacing the CD/DVD driver with one of their own which is nt compatible with the hardware or with Vista.
Any ideas on a fix? I would REALLY like to have my tunes!

this can be a symptom of a device filter conflict in
your registry. try running through the suggestions
    from the following document:
iTunes for Windows Vista: Troubleshooting CD
    issues caused by device filters
I had these same issues--my CD/DVD drive won't work after I installed Itunes on Windows Vista. I followed these directions to the letter. None of them worked. I'm glad I backed up my registry. Any more suggestions?

  • Driver filters that Itunes adds to CD/DVD drive

When I install or reinstall Itunes it adds upper and lower filters to my CD/DVD drive which then disable my CD/DVD drive. I know this is a problem with Vista since Microsoft has posted a step by step method for removing these filters (doc # KB929461). This restores the CD/DVD drive operation. The article claims that the installed drivers interfere with the current filters. The article does recommend attempting to reinstall the software (Itunes) because the CD/DVD storage stack did not migrate succesfully to Windows. However, everytime I reintall, the CD/DVD drive stops working. Other than buying a Mac (next time I will) how can I get Itunes and my laptop fully functional? Is there a patch somewhere that will correct this issue?

It would be best first to check for a device filter conflict. In particular, I’ve seen HP Memories Disc Creator Software (which comes bundled with some HP digital camera software) interact in this way with iTunes:
iTunes for Windows Vista: Troubleshooting CD issues caused by device filters
... however, if you're still getting no CD/DVD drive with *just the iTunes filters in place*, you may be one of the unlucky ones who are getting the issue discussed here:
Optical drives not recognized in Windows Vista after installing iTunes 7
Although it wouldn't necessarily be a short-term thing, keep an eye on that document for updated information about the issue.
In the short term, one workaround might be to use a different application to rip the CDs, and then use the "Add to library" function to get the ripped files into your iTunes. The following document might be of some help with that:
iTunes: About the Add to Library, Import, and Convert functions

  • Itunes installation causes my DVD drive to disappear

    Hello,
I wondered if anyone had any advice for me. Every time install Itunes on my Sony Vaio laptop the installation automatically uninstalls my DVD drive. I spoke to Sony and they said this was common and took me through a process of deleting two files that the Itunes installation adds to my computer. Deleting these files then allows me to reinstall my DVD drive.
The issue I have is in doing this it corrupts the Itunes, in that it says it can't burn the music and I have to reinstall it...but reinstalling Itunes only takes of my DVD drive!
Has anyone experiences similar problems and could you please offer me some advice? Thank you
    Vicky

does show up as a disk drive in device manager
are there any alert/warning messages next to the drive in Device Manager? in particular, are you seeing a code 41 message?

  • ITunes installation made CD/DVD drive dissapear for Windows Vista

Ok, so I got a new PC last week with Windows Vista. Everything had been working just fine until today (or today I realized)that Vista stopped recognizing my CD/DVD drive. After several hours I found that the problem was caused by iTunes and some GEAR software/drivers that it uses for burning CDs. So I logged on to GEAR's website to D/L the latest drivers, installed them, but still nothing happened. I then unistalled them, rebooted and still the same... Finally, I removed manually this GEAR thing, rebooted, and my CD/DVD drive was visible and accesible again. The problem is that now iTunes cannot burn CDs because it can´t find the GEAR software.
So this is a catch-22 situation: If I uninstall and re-install iTunes, I will not be able to see my CD/DVD drive, and if I remove these GEAR stuff, then I can see it but iTunes will not burn anything!!!!
For now I´ve decided to stay like this because at least I can use some other apps to burn CDs, and I can still sync my iPod, but I would like to have a solution for this.
Anybody has seen this same problem?
