ITunes has encounter an error an must shut down

This keeps happening after installing the updates and to top that off my screen gets funkie looking... the lines are all off and sometimes it doubles itself?
Any resolutions out there?
Thank you all !!!!

Hello,
Try this "quick fix" first:
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Select QuickTime and click Remove
Select iTunes and click Repair
Restart the computer
Attempt to open iTunes
If this doesn't resolve it for you, try a clean reinstall of the software:
Go into Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Remove these applications:
1. Apple Software Update
2. Apple Mobile Device Support
3. iPod for Windows (this may or may not exist, either way, it's not needed so we can remove it)
4. iTunes
5. QuickTime
Restart the computer
Download & Install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Launch the Utility: Start > Programs > Windows Install Clean Up
Select any of the above mentioned applications, and click Remove
Restart the computer again
Download & install iTunes again from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

  • Itunes has encountered a problem and is shutting down

I recently downloaded the updates for my ipad. Now, when I connect my ipad to itunes on windows 7, it appears to sync. Then clicking on ipad and apps, a window comes up saying "itunes has encountered a problem and is shutting down." I downloaded the itunes update hoping that would help, but no go.

  • ITunes has encountered an error and must close every time I try to open it.

I happen to have an iPod Video 30GB and I was happily using iTunes for a few months after acquiring my iPod when suddenly, out of the blue, when I tried to open iTunes, it came up with an error which basically said that it had encountered an error and had to close. The problem is that the window doesn't even get to open.I have read through countless FAQ's on the website and none of them seem to be getting near the problem.I sent an error report and I then checked if the problem had been solved. It said 'No'.I am wondering if anyone else has this problem and if they know how to fix it.

    Maybe try ewido.

  • "itunes has encountered a security problem" and shuts down

when I download tv shows, I get this message intermittently. I then lose the show I purchased, and itunes shuts down (even though itunes took my money for the show). When I have itunes check for purchased music, it says I have downloaded all purchased music. When I try to download the tv show again, it says I already purchased it. This is a very convenient (profitable) error for Apple.

I seriously doubt think Apple is trying to steal your $1.99.
A message about security? What's the esact message?
What antivirus/firewall/security software is running on your PC? Is it set up to allow iTunes, iTunesHelper, and QuickTime, and to NOT scan the iTunes folders?

  • Fixed "itunes has encountered an error and must close"

had this exact error and tried may things. I finnaly have it working. Here is what worked for me.
1, Download a previous version of Quick Time and install it.
2, Remove it with the add, remove programs feature in Control Pannel.Make sure that it is completley removed. (I found that I could not get rid of it without installing the older version.)
    3, remove Itunes.
4, Now turn off the virus software and reinstal itunes and the quicktime that comes with it.
    It should now work.
    Good Luck

  • Itunes has encountered a problem and must close..send error report etc.

I upgraded itunes (not even sure why since my old version was working fine) and now I keep getting the error that "itunes has encountered a problem and must close...". I did try the "msconfig" advice but that did not work. I even tried to use the CD that came with my ipod (March 2005) and the only option I get is to "uninstall" which I hesitate to do because I do not want to loose my itunes library. Does anybody have any other suggestions?? I greatly appreciate any help. I have read through some threads, but some of the "help" links that were inserted are no longer working.
    Thanks!

    I'm having the same problem.
I updated to 8.1 and it closes as soon as the shuffle is plugged in.
So I tried disabling auto-sync. No luck
So I tried loading an older version of iTunes - says I have to have 8.1
So I tried uninstalling and removing all itunes related files - and reinstalling. Still closing every time I plug in.

  • "iTunes has encountered an error.." Help! I've tried EVERYTHING.

I am running WIndows XP Media Center SP3 on an aging HP PC (Pentium 4).
In the past, iTunes (v. 7, I believe) worked just fine on my PC with no problems.  For a long time, I did not have a 'need' to upgrade the software because it worked fine the way I liked it. However, after purchasing an iPod approximately 6 months ago, I tried to upgrade iTunes to a newer version, but upon installation, received the error message "iTunes has encountered an error and cannot continue" and have not been able to successfully update since. After tweaking and a lot of trial and error, I was able to get as far as an early version of iTunes 9 before getting the messages again.  As I have recently acquired an iPhone (and want to update to OS 5), it doesn't help me if I can't update to the latest version of iTunes (10.5). I'd like to experience the full functionality of my new phone, and I NEED iTunes for that.
So far: I have repaired, removed, installed, uninstalled, removed all traces of (including from the registry) any and all versions of Quicktime and iTunes (and all related programs: Bonjour, MobileMe, Apple Support, etc) and NOTHING has worked.  I've removed codecs and other programs I thought may have contributed to the problem, but no luck. I've uninstalled my anti-virus software, no luck. I've used registry cleaners (CCleaner and Registry Crawler) to find and remove rogue files/extensions, etc. Still nothing.  At one time, I *was* able to get a standalone version of Quicktime to work (but not at the same time as iTunes), but again - a MUCH older version than the current one. This doesn't help me, as the moment I try to upgrade either Quicktime OR iTunes (or both) to get the most recent version(s), I again receive the same error... "iTunes/Quicktime has encountered an error and cannot continue."  I've even tried extracting files individually (using WinRAR) from the iTunes 10.5 installer package, and installing them one at a time.  Still no go.
I have seen MANY people with the same problem I have - yet I've tried EVERY posible solution (short of re-installing Windows) I can think of, or have found, or that has been suggested in these forums and elsewhere - and NOTHING has worked for me.  Can anyone help me? Surely there must be SOME solution?
The data Microsoft gives me when the error message(s) come up is as follows:

That's consistent with another application (other than QuickTime) having dropped old QuickTime componentry in non-standard locations on the PC.
So we'll go looking for the older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view options on the PC.
    1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
    2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now in My Computer, open your C drive.
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "system32" folder.
What files and/or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file/folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • "iTunes has encountered a problem and must close" message opening iTunes?

Every time I try to open iTunes or Quicktime from my desktop or anywhere else, this message comes up: "iTunes has encountered a problem and must close. Sorry for the inconvenience. Please click here to send an error report." Because of another problem on my computer, I have had to reinstall all my progams recently, including iTunes, but after installing and reinstalling a number of times yesterday, it cannot open. Other programs, like skype, are all working fine. Can someone help me figure out why my system can't open iTunes?

You can find version 6.0.1 at http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.htm.

  • ITunes as encountered an error and must close

Everytime I try to install/unistall or open iTunes it says it has encountered and error and must close. The error message where you can send a report. Also when I try to unistall Quick time. It will not let me.

    hi TPee!
Also when I try to unistall Quick time. It will not let me.
it sounds like the initial problem is likely due to a broken quicktime. so if we can replace your QT, we should be able to get itunes launching again.
with that strategy in mind, could you let us know what error message you're getting when you try to uninstall QT? include error message numbers if you're getting any.

  • "iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close" -Gapless Playback

I've had this problem for a while now and I'm just plain sick of it!
Every time I start up iTunes it does the "Determining Gapless Playback" thing, but when it gets to certain songs it freezes up and I get an error message that says:
"iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close"
This happenes to a lot of songs (a few dozen)and the only way I can actually access my library is by hitting the 'x'next to "Determining Gapless Playback" before it gets to the songs. However, now I can't even do that because it gets to the song immediately.
I need to know if I can disable the gapless playback or somehow debug this (I have reinstalled iTunes, Quicktime works, I have reloaded my library, done a system restore, and changed users/startup programs... nothing works)
    PLEASE help!
I run XP if that helps.

    Kar,
Check out the steps Roy B posted in this thread. They are long and a bit convoluted, but they seem to have done the trick for many others having this problem.

  • "iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close" - can't open iTunes

    Hi guys,
I'm a huge Apple fan so I obviously decided to upgrade to Apple 7.0.1 the day it came out... installed it. Opened it up, but within just a few seconds i got a Windows message saying
"iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close"
I reinstalled it and still have the same problem.
First few days I could atleast keep iTunes open for a few minutes before the message, but now its down to just a few seconds.
I run Windows XP if that helps any.
Please help me fix this problem or tell me how I can put iTunes 6 back on my computer --- I need my music!
    Thanks

After downloading and installing 7.0.1 my iTunes would not open either. Even worse is you can't go back to v6 if you had v7 running--the database is updated.
Luckily I was able to get my iTunes to open again by doing the following:
    Click Start/Run
    Type in "%userprofile%\application data\apple computer"
Right click on the iTunes folder and rename it to iTunes.bak.
    Close the window.
    Click Start/Run again.
    Type in "%userprofile%\local settings\application data\apple computer"
Right click on the iTunes folder and rename it to iTunes.bak.
    Close the window.
Try opening your iTunes again. It may re-ask some general setup questions, but mine opened without the error, and it still had all my music. However, I did have to re-authorize my computer.
I used to never be leary about updating iTunes... guess Apple's software ain't no peach, either.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • "Itunes has encountered an error.."

    Hi everyone!
I dont know if this has been mentioned before but this is really starting to get to me. My iTunes works perfectly fine when my ipod is not hooked up to update my songs to my ipod. When I do try to hook up my ipod, I see the ipod icon on the side blinking red and it says it's about to update but then all of a sudden I get that error message "Itunes has encountered an error..." So I send in the problem and it tells me they dont have a solution for it yet but it may be because of Quicktime. Now, my quicktime works. I have the Itunes 6.04.2(or whatever, the newly updated) and the newly updated Quicktime. Even so, Im still having an issue getting my itunes to load songs to my ipod. Someone please help me! I'd highly appreciate it! Im dying over here without my music XD
I have the fifth generation(video 30gb) ipod too with Windows XP and Norton 2005 if thats any help.

    hi rhapsody!
... okay, it's not that one. a pity because we had a straightforward fix for that one (upgrading to 6.0.3.5 or 6.0.4.2).
your particular message when plugging in an ipod, can be fiddly to troubleshoot. i haven't seen many commonalities amongst the non-6.0.2.23 reports and resolutions. so we'll work through various possibilities that have had some success with various cases of this.
first, let's try some spring cleaning and maintenance. download fresh definitions and run vigorous virus and spyware scans. if your security software providers offer them, do online scans too. (they can sometimes pick up malware if the security software on the PC has been compromised.) head to Windows update and make sure you're up-to-date in that regard too. do a disk cleanup, run your favorite disk checking/repair utility, and do a disk defrag. reboot.
if no joy with that, we'll check to see if you're getting an interaction between your security software and the ipod. as an experiment, try switching off your security software (antivirus, etc) prior to a synch. do you still get the itunes has message then?
if no joy with that, check to see if the drivers on your PC are up to date. this resource might be helpful with that:
Updating the drivers on your Windows PC
keep us posted on your progress.

  • Windows Vista - enter CD and it says iTunes has encountered an error. Help?

Basically, I bought a iPod the other day and installed the latest version of iTunes. I put a CD in to rip and within seconds of ripping I got a message saying 'iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close. Windows will contact you if there is a solution to the problem' or something to a similar effect. I have tried un-installing and re-installing and diffrent CDs and it says the same every time. The CDs all rip fine into Windows Media but when I tried importing them into iTunes from there the same message came up. I am totally lost and I really need music! =P any suggestions on how to get around this would be great =D Thanks x

  • ITunes has encountered an error but quicktime isnt broken

Ok so everytime I try to open iTunes i get a message that says "itunes has encountered an error and needs to close. sorry for the inconvenience" but my quicktime opens with no problem.
soo my dad said i shouldnt make a new account unless i absolutely have to.. so i havent ahhahh but his account is an administrative account and the iTunes opens in his account no problem, but of course all my songs and ipod stuff is on my account.
Tell me if you still need me to make the new account and I will.
    Thanks for your help

    hi Cecelia!
(warning in advance, this is experimental territory.)
hmmmmm. okay, sometimes with these weirder "open in one account but not in the other" errors, the problem is to do with registry permission settings. it can sometimes be a bear to track down which particular settings need to be checked. the Stejskal family (who couldn't get either itunes or QT to launch in some of their accounts) managed to get itunes and quicktime working in all the accounts by editing permissions in the following way:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=810602
the trick for me was getting up the nerve to "fiddle" with the registry...the reason why the girls could not get access to iTunes/QT was down to permission...once I got one going I went back in to HKEY-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\apple computer, inc\Quicktime...click to highlight go to edit, permission and added the missing girls to the list of who is allowed...made sure they have full permission..apply, ok and "bobs your uncle" all is now well in stejskal home.
since in your case (unlike the stejskals) QT is actually launching in your account, the relevant permissions may actually be fine for QT, but not for itunes. so some investigation of the actual registry permissions on your PC may be required. it might be wise to start by comparing and contrasting the permissions in QT and the permissions in itunes, for example.
(probably something that you should get your father to experiment with, though, if he's the only person with an administrator account on that PC.)
if no joy with that, let's try experimenting to see if itunes will open in a new user account for you.
    keep us posted.

If so, that sounds like malware. Try scanning for malware with ewido (Free at www.ewido.net/en/)
If you just recently installed any other software, security update, windows update, IM update, yadda yadda, now would be a good time to mention it.
