"itunes has encountered a security problem" and shuts down

when I download tv shows, I get this message intermittently. I then lose the show I purchased, and itunes shuts down (even though itunes took my money for the show). When I have itunes check for purchased music, it says I have downloaded all purchased music. When I try to download the tv show again, it says I already purchased it. This is a very convenient (profitable) error for Apple.

I seriously doubt think Apple is trying to steal your $1.99.
A message about security? What's the esact message?
What antivirus/firewall/security software is running on your PC? Is it set up to allow iTunes, iTunesHelper, and QuickTime, and to NOT scan the iTunes folders?

with that age of laptop we immediately suspect an issue with dust clogging the exhaust fan or the thermal compound between the heatsink and fan breaking down and needing to be replaced. The laptop needs to be opened and inspected in other words.

This keeps happening after installing the updates and to top that off my screen gets funkie looking... the lines are all off and sometimes it doubles itself?

Try this "quick fix" first:
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Select QuickTime and click Remove
Select iTunes and click Repair
Restart the computer
Attempt to open iTunes
If this doesn't resolve it for you, try a clean reinstall of the software:
Go into Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Remove these applications:
1. Apple Software Update
2. Apple Mobile Device Support
3. iPod for Windows (this may or may not exist, either way, it's not needed so we can remove it)
4. iTunes
5. QuickTime
Restart the computer
Download & Install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:

Launch the Utility: Start > Programs > Windows Install Clean Up
Select any of the above mentioned applications, and click Remove
Restart the computer again
Download & install iTunes again from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Itunes causes a "itunes has encountered a serious error and needs to close"

Ok everytime i try to open up itunes it immediatly opens up a window that says itunes has encountered a serious error and needs to close....i send the error report microsoft directs me to check out that apple page to uninstall qt and then repair...i have tried everything that i read in these forums, even the one where it says to go into dos mode(F8 to get to safe mode) and delete the files that have a random 4 or 6 letter file ending in .exe
i am at my whits end here please help i need my itunes
by the way it worked fine when i first installed it for about 2 days then i get nothing...

oh yeah and when i go to uninstall it from add\remove programs when the wizard comes up and is running i get that same error and needs to close message, but i doenst effect the uninstall wizard(i dont think)........PLEASE HELP

This is a worrying one - I updated Reader today and restarted after it promted me. Soon after the pc rebooted I got an error message that said "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart in one minute". After it restarted, I checked the event logs and came up with this error: "A critical system process, C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe, failed with status code 1. The machine must now be restarted.". This has never happened before and I want to know if the Reader update did anything bad. I restarted several times afterwards and it didn't happen again, but still.. it's worrying me. Is this a common error after the update or am I missing something? Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I understand that you are worried.
I have a very similar setup as yours, and nothing happened after the Reader 10.1.3 update. The one difference is that the update did not prompt me to restart Windows. (It did prompt me on several other [XP] systems.)
Let's wait and see if anyone else encountered a similar problem.

I did a soft reset, and I went to the discussion and turned every down or off. This is definitely a hardware problem.

TS1717 What can be done if Windows keeps saying iTune has a problem and shuts down.

I have tried all the troubleshooting steps:
1. uninstalling and download again
2. turn off firewall
3.run virus scan
4.open new account
The problem persists, I have my library backed up, but no way to play on my computer. This happened about the same time I upgraded to version 10.7, OS is Vista. Thanks for any assistance.

Itunes worked for about 30min. and then quit working, now it says there is a problem and shuts down. TGried uninstal and reinstall but it does the same thing. Will not run.

i have an hp pavilion all in one desk top computer and i'm having problems with the start up, sometimes when i turn it on i get as far as typing in my password and then the screen goes blank and i have to shut it off manually and turn it back on, but when i do it says failure to configure windows updates and reverting changes, and when i go to shut it down it shuts down but stays running so i have to start it again wait to put my password in then i can get it to shut down but yesterday when i went to shut it down i went to settings and clicked shut down and it wouldn't do anything so i manually shut it off and turned it back on , can anyone tell me what is causing these problems and how i can fix it.

If the issue persists I suggest creating a backup by following this document on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8). The next step will be to recover your Operating System by Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8).

I recently updated to vista service pack 2 and I updated to itunes 10.2.1 and ever since I did that my itunes won't open any more. Itunes starts but before anything loads a window pops up saying that the prograam has encountered a problem and shuts down.

I've tried uninstall/reinstalling it, disabling bonjour and the icuuc40 swap out to the older version but nothing has worked, yesterday I upgraded to 10.2.2 and still nothing. I haven't been able to open itunes for about a month now without it crashing.

Hello B Noir. Having the same trouble with this error message. Have removed lots of software off PC, deleted user accounts and set up a new one, downloaded iTunes 9 and then the lastest Quicktime. Am now running the spyware link you provided. Detail behind my error message is first: InPageError P1: C0000009c P2: 00000003 and then ~Temp|WERbf2f.dir00\iTunes.exe.mdmp and ~Temp\WERbf2f.dir00\appcompat.txt Any help you could give would be much appreciated. My PC is probably due for an upgade having squeezed 10 years out of it but I'm worried I'll just get the same problem again on a new machine. All the best, Paul.

... you probably don't have a malware issue Paul. The first thing I check for with an InPageError is a damaged font on the system.
Which operating system are you running? XP, Vista or 7?

HPSF.exe has stopped working. This application has encountered a serious problem and must close.

I have followed the solution, as found on the forum, for the above problem. After reinstalling the error message comes back. What other solution is there?

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. It is a great site for information and questions. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion m6 Notebook and issues with the HP Support Assistant not working correctly. Here is a link to help resolve with errors or concerns with the HP Support Assistant. Make sure when you uninstall the HP Support Assistant that nothing about it remains in the Control panel. After you uninstall please restart the Notebook. If that does not help you might want to try to click the Windows icon, type services in the Search box, and then click or tap View Local Services. Scroll down to the Windows Installer. Startup type should be - Automatic, and Service Status should be - started
Restart the computer after this step and try installing again. I hope this fixes this issue. Thanks.
