hi sg73!
I have downloaded the quick time player and it is operating but I still am having trouble with Itunes error message
what are the circumstances under which you're getting your "itunes has encountered an error" message?
the most common circumstance is when people launch itunes, but i've seen it happen at other times too. (importing a CD, downloading a video podcast, plugging in an ipod ...). when do you get it?

  • Itunes Has Encountered and error and Needs To close

My troubles all started when i updated my 30 gb ipod using itunes 7, from that day forward...itunes would say my ipod is corrupted, and would not let me add anything to it, it told me i had to restore it.
When clicking restore...it would stop 15secs into it and give me error 1418 saying, it could not be restored.
I then took it back to apple and they gave me a new one.
Now recently ive had new music put on my pc, so upon going to adding folder to add the music to my library, itunes will crash about 30seconds into it.
And windows would say "Itunes has encountered and erro......."
And yes i have followed the procedures to do a clean install of itunes, and its still crashing on me. The inability to not being able to add music to your ipod using windows explorer drag and drop is a pain in the a%^.

    Cory,
Are you trying to install the Quicktime standalone installer or Quicktime as part of the iTunes installer?
Let's get an installation log on the problem and send it to the Apple engineers.
    1. Turning on some advanced logging by creating a new file in your "Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp" folder with the name "QTInstallerLauncher.log". You might have to turn on "show hidden files" to find this folder. (Right click "my computer", select open, select Tools menu -> Folder Options. Select View tab, "show hidden files" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.)
    2. Start menu -> Run... In the text field of the dialog that comes up, type in "cmd" and hit return.
    3. In the command prompt dialog that comes up, find the Quicktime standalone installer on your desktop and drag it to this window. Then on the same line type in a space and then the following:
    /Verbose"c:\log.txt"
There is no space between the e in Verbose and the double quote (").
    4. Hit return.
    5. The installer will create a log file:
    C:\log.txt
    and a file called:
"Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp\QTPluginInstaller_9999.log" (number may differ). You may have multiple files like this..... Send them all, or at least the most recent ones.
Find those files and send them to the apple moderator. Tell her Toonz sent you. It doesn't hurt to put the URL to this discussion thread, so that whoever gets it has some context.

  • I'm getting the "spooler subsystem app has encountered and error" message

Greetings. I have one XP machine wired to a router, and one  Win7 Laptop connected wirelessly.  I install the printer driver for the Deskjet D2530 on the XP machine, and I can print. Then I install the printer driver for the Deskjet D2530 on the laptop, and go to "add Printer". I see the printer on the network, try add it, and the installation completes. Then when I attempt to print, the error message comes up on the XP machine.
The next step was to try the "hp print and scan tool'. I ran it on the XP machine and NFF; on the Win7 laptop, it said there was a driver conflict and that I should uninstall the printer driver software, and install the "full featured" version. I did that, and no difference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Microsoft has a fix for this on XP operating systems:

if that link does not work look for this phrase on the Microsoft site:

  • "iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close" -Gapless Playback

I've had this problem for a while now and I'm just plain sick of it!
Every time I start up iTunes it does the "Determining Gapless Playback" thing, but when it gets to certain songs it freezes up and I get an error message that says:
"iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close"
This happenes to a lot of songs (a few dozen)and the only way I can actually access my library is by hitting the 'x'next to "Determining Gapless Playback" before it gets to the songs. However, now I can't even do that because it gets to the song immediately.
I need to know if I can disable the gapless playback or somehow debug this (I have reinstalled iTunes, Quicktime works, I have reloaded my library, done a system restore, and changed users/startup programs... nothing works)
    PLEASE help!
I run XP if that helps.

    Kar,
Check out the steps Roy B posted in this thread. They are long and a bit convoluted, but they seem to have done the trick for many others having this problem.

  • "iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close" - can't open iTunes

    Hi guys,
I'm a huge Apple fan so I obviously decided to upgrade to Apple 7.0.1 the day it came out... installed it. Opened it up, but within just a few seconds i got a Windows message saying
"iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close"
I reinstalled it and still have the same problem.
First few days I could atleast keep iTunes open for a few minutes before the message, but now its down to just a few seconds.
I run Windows XP if that helps any.
Please help me fix this problem or tell me how I can put iTunes 6 back on my computer --- I need my music!
    Thanks

After downloading and installing 7.0.1 my iTunes would not open either. Even worse is you can't go back to v6 if you had v7 running--the database is updated.
Luckily I was able to get my iTunes to open again by doing the following:
    Click Start/Run
    Type in "%userprofile%\application data\apple computer"
Right click on the iTunes folder and rename it to iTunes.bak.
    Close the window.
    Click Start/Run again.
    Type in "%userprofile%\local settings\application data\apple computer"
Right click on the iTunes folder and rename it to iTunes.bak.
    Close the window.
Try opening your iTunes again. It may re-ask some general setup questions, but mine opened without the error, and it still had all my music. However, I did have to re-authorize my computer.
I used to never be leary about updating iTunes... guess Apple's software ain't no peach, either.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Windows Vista - enter CD and it says iTunes has encountered an error. Help?

Basically, I bought a iPod the other day and installed the latest version of iTunes. I put a CD in to rip and within seconds of ripping I got a message saying 'iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close. Windows will contact you if there is a solution to the problem' or something to a similar effect. I have tried un-installing and re-installing and diffrent CDs and it says the same every time. The CDs all rip fine into Windows Media but when I tried importing them into iTunes from there the same message came up. I am totally lost and I really need music! =P any suggestions on how to get around this would be great =D Thanks x

That's consistent with another application (other than QuickTime) having dropped old QuickTime componentry in non-standard locations on the PC.
So we'll go looking for the older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view options on the PC.
    1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
    2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now in My Computer, open your C drive.
    Open the "Windows" folder.

  • "Itunes has encountered an error.."

    Hi everyone!
I dont know if this has been mentioned before but this is really starting to get to me. My iTunes works perfectly fine when my ipod is not hooked up to update my songs to my ipod. When I do try to hook up my ipod, I see the ipod icon on the side blinking red and it says it's about to update but then all of a sudden I get that error message "Itunes has encountered an error..." So I send in the problem and it tells me they dont have a solution for it yet but it may be because of Quicktime. Now, my quicktime works. I have the Itunes 6.04.2(or whatever, the newly updated) and the newly updated Quicktime. Even so, Im still having an issue getting my itunes to load songs to my ipod. Someone please help me! I'd highly appreciate it! Im dying over here without my music XD
I have the fifth generation(video 30gb) ipod too with Windows XP and Norton 2005 if thats any help.

    hi rhapsody!
... okay, it's not that one. a pity because we had a straightforward fix for that one (upgrading to 6.0.3.5 or 6.0.4.2).
your particular message when plugging in an ipod, can be fiddly to troubleshoot. i haven't seen many commonalities amongst the non-6.0.2.23 reports and resolutions. so we'll work through various possibilities that have had some success with various cases of this.
first, let's try some spring cleaning and maintenance. download fresh definitions and run vigorous virus and spyware scans. if your security software providers offer them, do online scans too. (they can sometimes pick up malware if the security software on the PC has been compromised.) head to Windows update and make sure you're up-to-date in that regard too. do a disk cleanup, run your favorite disk checking/repair utility, and do a disk defrag. reboot.
if no joy with that, we'll check to see if you're getting an interaction between your security software and the ipod. as an experiment, try switching off your security software (antivirus, etc) prior to a synch. do you still get the itunes has message then?
if no joy with that, check to see if the drivers on your PC are up to date. this resource might be helpful with that:

  • "iTunes has encountered an error.." Help! I've tried EVERYTHING.

I am running WIndows XP Media Center SP3 on an aging HP PC (Pentium 4).
In the past, iTunes (v. 7, I believe) worked just fine on my PC with no problems.  For a long time, I did not have a 'need' to upgrade the software because it worked fine the way I liked it. However, after purchasing an iPod approximately 6 months ago, I tried to upgrade iTunes to a newer version, but upon installation, received the error message "iTunes has encountered an error and cannot continue" and have not been able to successfully update since. After tweaking and a lot of trial and error, I was able to get as far as an early version of iTunes 9 before getting the messages again.  As I have recently acquired an iPhone (and want to update to OS 5), it doesn't help me if I can't update to the latest version of iTunes (10.5). I'd like to experience the full functionality of my new phone, and I NEED iTunes for that.
So far: I have repaired, removed, installed, uninstalled, removed all traces of (including from the registry) any and all versions of Quicktime and iTunes (and all related programs: Bonjour, MobileMe, Apple Support, etc) and NOTHING has worked.  I've removed codecs and other programs I thought may have contributed to the problem, but no luck. I've uninstalled my anti-virus software, no luck. I've used registry cleaners (CCleaner and Registry Crawler) to find and remove rogue files/extensions, etc. Still nothing.  At one time, I *was* able to get a standalone version of Quicktime to work (but not at the same time as iTunes), but again - a MUCH older version than the current one. This doesn't help me, as the moment I try to upgrade either Quicktime OR iTunes (or both) to get the most recent version(s), I again receive the same error... "iTunes/Quicktime has encountered an error and cannot continue."  I've even tried extracting files individually (using WinRAR) from the iTunes 10.5 installer package, and installing them one at a time.  Still no go.
I have seen MANY people with the same problem I have - yet I've tried EVERY posible solution (short of re-installing Windows) I can think of, or have found, or that has been suggested in these forums and elsewhere - and NOTHING has worked for me.  Can anyone help me? Surely there must be SOME solution?

  • ITunes has encountered an error but quicktime isnt broken

Ok so everytime I try to open iTunes i get a message that says "itunes has encountered an error and needs to close. sorry for the inconvenience" but my quicktime opens with no problem.
soo my dad said i shouldnt make a new account unless i absolutely have to.. so i havent ahhahh but his account is an administrative account and the iTunes opens in his account no problem, but of course all my songs and ipod stuff is on my account.
Tell me if you still need me to make the new account and I will.
    Thanks for your help

    hi Cecelia!
(warning in advance, this is experimental territory.)
hmmmmm. okay, sometimes with these weirder "open in one account but not in the other" errors, the problem is to do with registry permission settings. it can sometimes be a bear to track down which particular settings need to be checked. the Stejskal family (who couldn't get either itunes or QT to launch in some of their accounts) managed to get itunes and quicktime working in all the accounts by editing permissions in the following way:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=810602
the trick for me was getting up the nerve to "fiddle" with the registry...the reason why the girls could not get access to iTunes/QT was down to permission...once I got one going I went back in to HKEY-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\apple computer, inc\Quicktime...click to highlight go to edit, permission and added the missing girls to the list of who is allowed...made sure they have full permission..apply, ok and "bobs your uncle" all is now well in stejskal home.
since in your case (unlike the stejskals) QT is actually launching in your account, the relevant permissions may actually be fine for QT, but not for itunes. so some investigation of the actual registry permissions on your PC may be required. it might be wise to start by comparing and contrasting the permissions in QT and the permissions in itunes, for example.
(probably something that you should get your father to experiment with, though, if he's the only person with an administrator account on that PC.)
if no joy with that, let's try experimenting to see if itunes will open in a new user account for you.
    keep us posted.

  • ITunes has stopped working error message on my Dell Latitude E6520 when trying to sync photos to my iPhone 3GS.  Why?!

For some reason, I keep getting the "iTunes has stopped working" error message on my Dell Latitude E6520 when trying to sync photos to my iPhone 3GS.  I am using Windows 7 on my 64-bit computer.  iTunes will begin to optimize the photos in the folder I have directed it to (I am trying to load almost 3000 photos and videos), and it will go through optimizing all of them singularly, then get to the step where it says "optimizing" again, but does so in bigger groups.  It will get to about 2000, and then the error message "iTunes has stopped working" will pop up, and say that "Windows must close the program and will search for a solution, and if it finds one, it will notify me".  Why can't I sync these photos, and what can I do?  Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate it!

Same problem here! Moreover, for some reason, the pictures in my iPhone 3GS somehow have been divided into 2 folders, Photos and Medialibrary. And when I open iPhone as a folder through the explorer I can see only the Photos folder, but cannot see the Medialibrary folder which stores the photos taken before updating/upgrading the iPhone and getting separated folders!!! What the hack with all of this?!!! When I connect iPhone to PC it automatically opens iTunes and starts syncronizing it, but at the process of OPTIMIZING the photos (and according to the number of photos it shows, I see that it tries to syncronize that invisible Medialibrary folder) the process suddenly stops and error message pops out Tried the sync test, tried the button DEBUG in that pop out message, but NOTHING HELPS!!! Also, when I open the Medialibrary in my iPhone, the screen get sblack all through scrolling it down, only the video clips are shown there... >.<
So, could you, apple developers, please, explain WHAT THIS PROBLEM IS ABOUT?!!!!!! FIX IT! I am getting ****** of to spend hours at the computer and reading those lame advises which do not help at all! I have my own things to do except reading your support websites. And I payed for the product ready to use, but not a halfproduct which problems should further be solved somehow by users..

  • Can't install iTunes 11 on Widows 8, 'iTunes has stopped working' error message

Two months ago, I bought a new computer that uses Windows 8.  I was running iTunes 10.6 on it fine until today, when it crashed for some unknown reason.  Every time I've tried to open it again, I kept on getting a 'iTunes has stopped working' message.  I've uninstalled 10.6 and tried installing iTunes 11, but keep getting the same 'iTunes has stopped working' error message with no other details.  I've tried installing it as an administrator, but got same failed results.
    Any help?

I am not familiar with that error message either. You originally posted on November 30, 2013. It is now December 8, 2013. Has your issue been resolved yet? If not, then I would offer the following troubleshooting scheme based on what you have written.
    1. Open a project. Go to Help Menu/Deactivate and Deactivate. Close out of there.
    2. Uninstall Premiere Elements 9 via the usual Control Panel Route.
    3. Run the computer through the ccleaner (regular cleaner and registry cleaning parts).
    4. Reinstall Premiere Elements 9 with antivirus and firewalls off.
    5. Reinstall the Premiere Elements 9.0.1 Update.
    Is the problem resolved.
We may have to look deeper into your original reasons for troubleshooting the program
i tried to reinstall my copy of Adobe Premiere Elements 9.0 because of problems with creating/loading any projects.
We may need to distinguish between damaged projects versus a program that has become non functional.
Please review and do not hesitate to ask for clarification on anything written.
    Thank you.

Add On...If there is any indications of a problem with Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 Elements Organizer 9 we can look into deleting its settings file and/or creating a new catalog. But, I do not see any indications for this at this time.

I am trying to get my son's new ipod nano ready for music, I have downloaded itunes, but it will not open. When I click on the icon, a message that says "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" It asks if I want to send an error report. I have uninstalled and reinstalled (twice) I do not have Norton or any other anti-virus, apparantly. I have restarted a couple of times. I have ready MANY threads on similar issues, tried most with no luck. any suggestions, son is bgetting anxious-all he has done is look at his new ipod for 2 days!
emachines Windows XP 1.80GHz Intel Celeron, 40GB hd

This error could be caused by a number of things. Try it one more time, and if the error comes up write down what kind of error it is (ie. Symantec, Runtime,). Then do a google search for that. You may be able to find a solution elsewhere.

  • "iTunes has encountered an error and has to close"

I'm getting this error message whenever I plug in my nano or my mini. iTunes crashes. This just started happening. So far I've reset, restored, reinstalled - you name it. But nothing works.
iTunes works fine when there's no iPod plugged in.
    Help?

    well done MAJR!
just a note on the error message "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close".
there are actually at least three different contexts in which people get this message, and the treatments will differ depending on the context. here's some info on the three most common contexts.
"itunes has encountered a problem ..." when LAUNCHING ITUNES
this is the most common time to see the message. in my experience, 90% of the time this is caused by a broken QuickTime 7.0.x. So the first thing people should check for is whether their Quicktime will launch, or whether it gives them an error message when they try to launch it.
if you get an error message when you try to launch Quicktime, the standard treatment is to swap out your QuickTime. there's actually an Apple KB doc on the problem, although the silly sausages have given the error message incorrectly in the doc (as of the 23 December 2005 revision), which makes it more difficult to find the message when you're searching for it:
iTunes 6 for Windows unexpectedly quits when opened
... that method is pretty servicable in the majority of cases, but it leaves you open to a known complication of a broken Quicktime where people can't uninstall their QT and get an error message citing their QuickTime "uninstall.log". so i usually suggest to people that they try a careful standalone QT 7.0.4 reinstall instead (which gets past the "uninstall.log" error):
download and save a copy of the QT 7.0.4 installer to your hard drive. (run the install from there rather than online.) switch off all antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.0.4 Standalone Installer
known complications of QuickTime reinstalls: the most common (for QT versions 7.0.2 and 7.0.3 and iTunes versions 5.0.0.35 through 6.0.1.3, at least) is an error message citing "Error 0x80040707". in this context (again, the treatments for this error message are context dependent too), the most common cause of the Error 0x80040707 is a snarlup in the QT installation registry entries.
what typically fixes it is the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
use the utility to clear the existing Quicktime entries. then try the careful standalone QT 7.0.4 reinstall again.
other known causes of "itunes has encountered a problem ..." on launch: probably the most common of the rarer causes (if you'll pardon the oxymoron) is a rare weird problem to do with the registry and user accounts on XP machines.
to check for that, first head into your "User Accounts" control panel and create a new user account with full administrative privileges. (there's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) while you're in that control panel, switch off "Fast User Switching" in your logging-on preferences.
now, log out of the old account and log into the new account. can you get itunes to launch inside the new account?
if itunes does launch inside the new account, then try an experiment (this rules out an ultra-rare "false positive diagnosis" of the registry/user-account thing). use the following technique to share the music from your old account to the new account:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
if itunes still launches from the new account once you've shared the music from the old account to the new account, then you've got the registry/user-account thing.
fixing the old account might be tricky. we've had mixed success with combinations of complete uninstalls of itunes using the following technique:
Da Gopha: Stepwise clean uninstallation of iTunes
... followed by application of a Registry repair program such as RegCleaner or Registry Fix. failing that, it might be worth just "moving house" to the new account.
(there are other even rarer causes of this message on launch ... if you believe you've got one of those, best to start your own thread and explicitly explain as best as you can what the behavior is and what steps you've already taken to try to resolve the issue.
"itunes has encountered a problem ..." when IMPORTING A CD
in iTunes versions 4.9 through 6.0.1.3 this was most commonly caused by a hyperthreading problem on PCs with dual cores and dual processors. on those versions of iTunes, the workaround was to set the itunes affinity to a single core/processor. (Otto42 is our authority on that topic.) but the bug has been fixed in iTunes 6.0.2:
iTunes for Windows quits unexpectedly importing CDs on a dual-processor or dual-core computer
"itunes has encountered a problem ..." when PLUGGING IN AN IPOD
the most mysterious of the three main classes. there doesn't seem to be a common cause of this one (or at least it hasn't been clearly identified yet).
probably the first things to check up on are:
iTunes for Windows may unexpectedly quit when syncing folders of pictures with iPod
... but if no joy there, this is probably the best next port of call:
Troubleshooting an unexpected quit or restart of Windows, iTunes, or QuickTime
