ITunes has reorganized my music directorty

iTunes has reorganized my music directory.
I had everything carefully organized by genre, artist, etc
Is it possible to return this directory back to the way I had it organized?

Thank-you but...
The actual directory on my hard drive was manually organized. After installing iTunes where I would have had a directory called for example; e:/music/blues/Albert King/album name etc... Its reorganized into songs and folders all over the e drive bearing no resemblance to the file structure I had set-up. Instead of opening the drive to find about 20 genre directories I now have about, oh, several thousand small directories.
Luckily I have a complete back-up on another drive. I'd like to fix this one and put it back the way it was. I prefer winamp and its easier the way I had it.

My itunes has stopped playing music. I recently downloaded more music and now it has stopped playing, it says it is playing but there is no sound and the time bar does not move from 0. • My iTunes has deleted my music library- how do you fix?

I tried importing a disk into my iTunes library, and it asked me to name the file.  So I did, but now my iTunes has that name displayed on the top and all my music and playlists are gone.  I tried uninstalling and re-installing, but it didn't fix the issue.  How do I revert back so I can have access to all my songs, videos, books, etc?  HELP!!

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl.
Given your iTunes windows is currently showing up with the wong name you will need to hold down shift as you start iTunes, then click the option to Choose a library and navigate to the correct file.  Should all be good now, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Front Row claims no music, but iTunes has all my music listed

I'm new to the Mac OS so completely in your hands to help with an issue I am having with trying to get Front Row going... here is what I am observing and my environment:
    Situation
    - All my music is listed in iTunes (videos as well)
    - When using Front Row and looking at the library it states there is no music and that I need to purchase music from the iTunes store
    - My MacBook from work (2.0GHz Intel with 10.5.6) has the iTunes library also from my exernal drive... BUT has all the music listed! :/
    Environment
    - Mac Mini (2.0GHz Intel)
    - OS X v10.5.6
    - Front Row v2.0 (229)
    - All my music is on an external Buffalo TeraStation 1TB disk-array
    - Music totals about 300GB (+/-)
    - All my music is DRM-free and are 'ripped' from my CDs before getting the Mac... or mixes I have downloaded online from various sites such as Podomatic, etc.
    What I've tried
    * In looking at various sites online (including here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1826723&tstart=0) I have tried the solution of taking the default music location in iTunes and putting an alias to my external disk-array... and then rebuilt the library and rebooted... still Front Row claims nothing there.
    * It was mentioned in another posting on Apple (I believe) about looking at the Front Row 'library file' and deleting it and then let it get re-created by the software... nothing.
Anyhow I'd love to use Front Row but really frustrated as to why it wont reflect all the music I already have in iTunes! Any suggestions? I'm new to the Mac OS, but by far not a newbie to computers so feel free to ask any in-depth questions which might help... I just might also need the path on how to find the information being asked.
Again, my Macbook does list everything in Front Row from the iTunes library and from my limited knowledge the only difference is that my laptop is solely connected wirelessly and the Mac Mini is via RJ45... but I would be shocked if that played into this. Suggestions?
Hopefully this will also help others as I've asked many of my 'Mac friends' and they are also stumped as to why Front Row wont show what is in my library.

    1) No - downloaded a free song and it plays in iTunes, but claims nothing in Front Row. Also Front Row states there are no podcasts, even though I have at least 6 podcasts in iTunes all with a lot of content
    2) I shared the Macbook library and I -can- view it with Front Row on the Mac Mini... so that worked.
2b) Front Row on the Macbook is able to work with not only my Macbook iTunes, but also loads the Mac Mini library and works with it. :/
2c) Switch source back to the Mac Mini, and nothing...
So is this as simple as a corrupt install or something? Seems something local to Front Row on the Mac Mini itself...

  • Itunes has lost all music file locations

Itunes has lost the location of ALL the music files in the library. I have not moved my files so I believe it may have happened when Itunes updated a few days ago. If this is the case, it is not very smart of the programmers! When I locate individual songs, Itunes only finds the other songs that are in the same subfolder, that leaves about 5000 files missing! I realise I can import my whole music folder but this will revert a lot of incorrect track information that I have manually edited over the months.
I would love some help as all the other posts seem to refer to slightly different problems and can never get around the problem of files being in various subfolders.
    Thanks.

    Hey Lhatcher1987,
That can definitely be stressful, but there's an article that can help you find the media you expected to appear in iTunes. I'd read through it and see if that helps you find the missing music:

  • HELP, itunes has lost my music!!!!

Hey there, this is my first post soa any help is appreciated.
Today i opened up ITunes and I had no music??? no idea why, it was just not there. After this I then connected my ipod to my MAC and it said that my ipod was linked to another itunes. I tried to import my tunes off my ipod but can not do it as when i look on my ipod it does not show any music only the contact files etc. I also get an error message comes up every time i open itunes after connecting my ipod that says ' the itunes music libary file cannot be saved. an unknown error occured (-51).' then when you click ok and close the itunes window it the starts to bounce in the dock untill it is opened again and repeats the error message again.
Any ideas? where do I look for my music?

It sounds like your iTunes library file is corrupted. This file is located in (home)/Music/iTunes, it's called "iTunes Library" and contains the links to all your music files (but not the files themselves), your playlists, playcounts and ratings. Your music files most probably still remains on your hard drive (the default location is (home)/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music, but the library file that used to access it can't be used at the moment.
    Try this to "revive" it:
    - close iTunes
    - go to (home)/Music/iTunes and drag "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" file to the desktop.
    - open iTunes, it will open to an empty library.
    - now go File->import and select the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file from the desktop.
    Does that restore your library?
If not, then you can download a 3rd party utility like iPod Access or senuti to transfer your library from your iPod to your computer (this can't be done using iTunes) and restore everything that way.
Let us know how it goes...
    Sara.

  • 4 College girls with 4 Macbooks,My daughters ITunes has her roomates music?

When I helped move my daughter into her dorm (4 girls,4 bedrooms, 4 brand new MacBooks!!!!! Needless to say I was very happy but shocked at the odds! Last night, my daughter calls and tells me that besides her own ITunes music, she discovered that she also had her roomates ITunes on her computer as well. She wanted to know how this was possible.....and so did I. Here's what I found out. 3 girls have their firewall off, my daughter has her firewall on! 3 girls have their file sharing turned off, 1 girl has it turned on and this is the girl whose music ended up on my daughters MacBook! They are all wirelessly connected to the buildings unsecured network (off campus) They are all wireless because at the moment, none have an ethernet cable. I told my daughter that while "I am not their dad" They need to turn on their firewalls!!!! I also told my daghter that she needs an ethernet cable plugged in for the times that she is working at her desk...at least, the rest of the time she can be wireless. I want to know, how/why my daughters MacBook got this other girls ITunes music when her (my daughters) firewall is on, and file sharing is off? I also want to know how (If any) her secuity can be tightened up. (Under Sharing) she has nothing checked)

There are a few possible items which could be shared in addition to the music; this will include the Public folder of the accounts configured on the machine by default, but might extend to other items as well, depending on the exact configuration. None of the easily accessible items other than the Public folder can be made available over the network without someone operating the machine making them available.
Turning on stealth mode or blocking UDP ports in the firewall may help increase security further, as will turning off services unless you need them turned on.

  • Itunes has LOST my music

I just re-synced my ipod. and noticed I was some 1000 songs light. Now I have my files on an external HD and itunes, but keeps losing the library when it was kept there. so I moved the library the my mac book.
I Made sure the "move files to folders" was de-checked. It did some organizing of the library and now I have lots of empty folders with just the artwork in.
Where have all my songs gone? I have run file salvage, but they have not been delete, trash is empty, so where on earth has itunes banished them to?
    Can anyone help?

Have you tried this: Select in iTunes one of the songs you can't find. Press Command-I. Go to the summary tab and look at the bottom where it says "Where:". That should tell you where the file is.
If for some reason the previous method doesn't work, you can try a search. Open Finder, Press Command-F, make sure This Mac and Contents are both selected, type the name of an artist in your library, and see what appears. If you see one of your songs, you can Control-Click it and select Open Enclosing Folder. Set Finder to Column View (Command-3), and look at where the files are. You can move the music to where it should be, if you want to. Note that if you move the music back, you'll have to tell iTunes the new location.
    Hope this helps!
    Nate

  • Itunes has separated my music by album and by artist

how do I get albums all together? I have tried checking the "compilation" box but it has made no difference.

    Chris CA wrote:
    This is the confusing factor.
iTunes always uses Artist for the folders it is saved to, not Album Artist.
I'm fairly certain when it comes to organizing files, Part of a compilation=Yes puts the album in the Compilations folder and thereafter Album Artist, if set, trumps Artist. If neither are set the value of Unknown Artist is used.
Except for Compilations, whenever Album Artist is blank its value is implied from Artist.
Toggling View > Column Browser > Use Album Artists changes whether the Artists column in the browser shows all the different values of the Artist field or all values of the Album Artist field. It should have no effect on the physical organization of the files.
In a similar fashion View > Column Browser > Group Compilations controls the listing of compilations under a single Compilations artist, or the respective Album Artist of each album, e.g. Various Artists, Original Broadway Cast etc.

  • My itunes has reorganized itself....

I opened up my itues yesterday, and I'm unable to tell you how it became organized this way... I previously had all of my music in as "Albums". Each CD in my collection was separate, except for double/multiple disk albums, which were under one "cover" like the albums of my early vinyl years.
Now, I have say, a listing for "The Allman Brothers BAnd" artwork of "live at the Fillmore", and the listing under the cover artwork shows 4 albums, 62 songs.
One I noticed is entitled "Compliations" and has 51 albums filed in it.
I do not recall making any changes that would have preformed this change function, and perhaps it is a easy fix, but I'm not familiar with what it could be. Any ideas? my googling has gone for naught so far.......this happenned on all 100 G of my music, and I'm not happy about it. I cannot relate it to an upgrade , either.....
    Ideas?

See my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums for tips on getting organised.

  • Itunes has lost all music and no files located on laptop apart from one.

    Hi,
We have recently downloaded all our CDs into itunes to clear them out and have them successfully on our devices. I went to reorganise my music and change things and discovered that my music library looks like it is there but says cannot locate file. I have tried to search for the albums but they are nowhere. There is my most recent download and I can search for that and it plays but that is all. Please help...we no longer have the albums and have purchased a lot through itunes.
    Thanks.

  • HT1338 I transfered IPad from PC to Mac...de-authorized and signed in...found ITunes has both my music and music from the previous ITunes account even though it was also de-authorized and signed out and a new sign in ITunes account....

My wife and I decided to switch PC's.  She had an Mac Pro and I had a PC.  Both of us have Itunes (Ipad, Iphones).   She moved her ITunes library to a new PC and de-authorized and signed out from her old Mac Pro.  She signed in and authorized her new PC.  I took her Mac Pro and followed the same process.  In the end we both found our ITunes library mix in with each others music and books.  Despite the fact we are both signed in to our own ITunes account.  Seems like the devices (IPad, etc.) stays linked to the original computer....these devicdes did not contain mix Itunes library (eve after they were synced).

    - You can only sync an iPod to one iTunes library/computer. You can however, manually manage music and videos among different libraries.
Go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Sync your iPod....>Sync You Device>Set up Syncing>Sync your device manually and follow the instructions.
    - If y wnat to switch syncing libraries/computer see:
go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Sync your iPod....>Sync You Device>Set up Syncing>Sync your device manually and follow the instructions.
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
If all the synced media like music is in the iTunes library of the second computer it is very easy.

  • Lost my music on ipod, but itunes has it

While putting music on iTunes, and connecting my iPod, the iPod became blank and no longer contains my music. However, iTunes has all the music. iTunes popped up with this message, "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly, please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software."
If I reinstall iTunes, will all my music be lost?

Try the instructions in this article; reinstalling iTunes won't delete the contents of your music library.

  • ITUNES has lost music lib

    Hi
ITUNES has lost my music library. It's still on the disk in the same location it's always been and itunes is still pointing to that directory however no music is displayed.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks

Sounds like the iTunes Library .ITL file got damaged.
Just drag all your songs back into the library.
Your ratings and playcounts will all be gone, though. This same thing has happened to me once or twice. I back up the iTunes library files once or twice per week. When it happens I just drag the saved files over to the iTunes folder.
What are the iTunes library files?

  • TS1362 My iTunes has stopped playing - it will not progress. I have updated iTunes, and can't figure out how to find any plug-ins - can't figure out how to find hidden files on the iMac Finder.

How do I find hidden files on my iMac? My iTunes has stopped playing music and videos - the playbar does not progress, and it may be that there is a plug-in that is stopping it. How do I fix it?

Well, it sort of solved my problem. Now every time I start a lecture with sound, there is no sound, but the slides advance. If I go back to iTunes and turn on a cd, it plays the sound. If I then go back to the lecture, the sound goes on. So each time I start a slide show with sound, I have to turn on iTunes. How can I fix this?
