  • Problems with system restore points in Win 8.1 (keep increasing in size)

    Hi,
I was sent here by Microsoft Support who seem to have no idea of the mechanics of System Restore and what could interfere with it. I've no idea where to post this, so I hope you can help in that.
I have the problem that my System Restore point (only a single point) keeps increasing rapidly in size from a few Mb to many Gb and even fills the C drive if I don't stop it. Setting a limit to the size doesn't help (in System Restore or VSS), as it ignores
it and increases the limit. I have tried all the usual (sfc, DISM, chkdsk, several antivirus and malware programs) with no success.
Obviously, I can turn off System Restore, but that isn't really something I want to do.

When you say "system backup", do you mean generation of system restore points or an actual backup? i don't use MSBackup.
    Hi,
What I meant system backup is system backup feature that it would create restore point when you enable system backup automatically.
I made a test in our testing enviroment. limit restore point disk space usage to minize, create some restore point. When I create a seconde restore point, it would replace the former time point. The maxize disk space usage won't more than the limiation.
Therefore, please check the size of Restore Point in C:\System Volume Information if it's larger than system limiation.

  • Imesh has taken over your browser I am unable to remove it with system restore or add and remove programmes Help!

Your browser is preceded by something calling itself imesh it takes pride of place in your browser slot or window whatever you call it.
As I have said I can't rid myself of it via system restore or in the add & remove programmes part of my X P version of windows.
It's still there when I re-downloaded Firefox it's planted itself within my other browsers as well, Safari, Chrome and I think it's got into Internet Explorer too.'''bold text'''

Sheesh. That looks hard. I think it will fall over at this point:
"Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP" 'cos Thunderbird uses only the regular email protocols: POP, IMAP and SMTP.
Here (at work) we have in the past have had IMAP and SMTP enabled on our Exchange server so Thunderbird could then connect just like to any other regular internet-based service.
With the change here to outlook365/outlook 2010 I've had to switch to using DavMail which lets Thunderbird talk to the mail server using OWA.
I haven't (seriously) tried Exquilla. Whilst I have great respect for its author and some of his other add-ons, I saw no reason to use an add-on that required payment when DavMail works for free.

  • Transferring itunes for a system restore

Hey everyone, this is my first time posting so bear with me here. I was wanting to system restore my mac by putting in the original install disc. I know how to back up all of my other files, but itunes is the only one I'm concerned about. How can I transfer all my songs successfully from my current itunes library to my new one after the system restore. I want to make sure I don't lose the licenses and be unable to play any of my songs after the system restore. I also have a couple movies I purchased over itunes and want to make sure those transfer as well. Thanks for the help!

Copy the entire iTunes folder (the entire folder, not just the iTunes Music folder) from your user's Music folder to some external medium (an external hard drive is easiest). Deauthorize your system from any iTunes Store accounts you've been using by using the Deauthorize Computer command under the Store menu in iTunes. Re-do your system and recreate your Mac OS X user account. Copy the iTunes folder back from your external medium to your user's Music folder. Launch iTunes and everything should be back; just play an item purchased from the iTunes Store, or use the Authorize command under the Store menu, to re-authorize the computer.
    Regards.

  • ITunes dead after System Restore

I can no longer launch iTunes, and this has nothing to do with spyware.
    Sequence of Events:
    1) Last Thursday, I purchased a new track from itms (Iggy Pop - Candy - it's good, check it out).
    2) Upon trying to play the track, I was presented with the message that the computer was not authorized to play the track. Other songs I tried to play gave the same error. I had been perfectly content using iTunes 4.7. However, in order to play the tracks, I now needed to upgrade to the current version of iTunes. This was, imo, obnoxious, but I capitulated, and downloaded and installed v6.0.1.3. After installation, iTunes worked perfectly fine.
    3) Thursday evening I shut the computer down for the evening. I didn't use the system again until Sunday evening. When I powered the machine up, Windows booted to a black screen. Safe mode worked properly, but 'normal'-mode would not light the display (this is a laptop). Not knowing what was wrong yet, I tried using System Restore to return the system to a slightly earlier state. The most recent checkpoint was just before installing the iTunes update, so that's where I restored to.
    4) System Restore didn't fix the problem. That's when I discovered the switch on the laptop that senses whether or not the lid is closed was broken, and it was telling Windows the lid was closed, resulting in the darkened screen. (I've removed the switch while I wait for the replacement plastic piece I need, so that's no longer an issue.)
    5) System Restore did not have the option to undo the previous System Restore.
    6) I then re-installed iTunes 6.0.1.3. Each time I try to launch iTunes, I see the standard MS "Do you want to send the error info to Microsoft?" message box, and iTunes won't start.
To try and repair the problem, I've tried uninstalling iTunes and Quicktime repeatedly. I've tried System Restore, and then a reinstall, several times. I've been a Computer Tech since '94, and routinely remove spyware problems from people's computers in a professional capacity. I am certain my iTunes problem is not malware-related. However, just to cover all bases I went ahead and followed the Apple doc referenced repeatedly in these forums involving MSCONFIG to ensure my iTunes problem wasn't related to some startup issue. I've taken the iTunes folder, with the library.itl and .xml files, and moved it to the desktop prior to reinstalling iTunes. I've uninstalled, and then deleted the Program Files\iTunes and Program Files\iPod directories prior to reinstallation. I've disabled my antivirus during the install.
No matter what I've tried, iTunes will no longer start.
Anybody have any ideas what I can try next to revive iTunes on my PC. I very much don't want to lose my existing playlists, album art, and music files (especially the approx. $130 of purchased music), obviously.
    Thanks,
    Steve

hmmmm. some thoughts (speculation warning) on what might have gone wrong with the QT. a system restore "over top" of a fresh itunes install will strip out some installation registry entries from both QT and itunes. (under those circumstances, itunes won't launch, spitting out a "some of the required files ..." error message.)
under those circumstances, i usually recommend uninstall QT and itunes prior to the reinstall. (of course, you had other more pressing things to worry about at the time ...) i've been doing that because the QT component of the itunes installer bundle can be a little more delicate than the itunes component when it comes to installing "over top" of existing program files and folders. i think it's partly to do with the fact that it's the second install in the chained install (more can go wrong with it). so the QT may have been compromised on the reinstall, even though the itunes part of the install went through fine.
you don't tend to get the same QT install problems on a standalone QT install (again, speculation, but it seems plausible) because it's not the second install in a chain.

  • Error code 0x800700B7 with System Restore and Backup problems

My OS is Vista Ultimate. 2GB RAM. 13GB free space on C Drive. I am unable to use System Restore or Backup and Restore center. When I try to create a Restore Point (or do a backup) error message comes up 'Could not create the scheduled task for the following reason: Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (0x800700B7).' I think (not sure) that these problems came after I was infected with win32:Vitro virus. (No longer any infections showing). I think that my registry may be corrupt or files deleted. Can anyone help please?

    Hi,
    Thank you for your post.
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
Note: Please perform a complete system backup first. If any unexpected issue occurs, we can quickly restore the system to the current status.
    1.     Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    2.     In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache
    3.     Right click on this key and select "Export" and save the key to a Flash Drive or other removable storage device.
    4.     Remove the key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\Windows”
    5.     Please reboot the computer and check if the issue reoccurs. If it works, please also reconfigure the Scheduled Task for System restore in Task Scheduler.
    Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • Itunes wiped after system restore - what can I do?

I know that i was really silly by not backing up my itunes but I was anxious to get laptop fixed so had system restore done and am now wondering if there is any way to get my library off my ipod and into my newly downloaded itunes?

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to sync automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iPodRip Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Reinstalling Itunes after laptop system restore

My laptop was corrupted, it wouldn't boot up and I have had to do a system restore ... meaning I have lost my Itunes library. On top of which I hadnt backed up my library! All I have is my nano generation 3 with 1000+ tracks on it. I've heard if I reinstall Itunes and then syncronise my nano I will lose everything on my nano! Is this true? And if so, is there any way I can get the tracks stored in my library onto my laptop? I really don't fancy downloading 1000+ tracks again!

I found the answer in the response to the earlier post "Coping music from ipod back to PC" (posted: Aug 1, 2007 10:25 AM) and ended up using Tunejack ... it was very simple, everything is restored to my Itunes library including playlists, number of times played etc, although I did have to redownload album cover designs, but that was no real hardship. I then synchronised my Ipod with Itunes as normal so that everything was aligned. As I side issue, because I had redownloaded Itunes onto my computer, found I had to reauthorise my computer. Otherwise when I did my sync, it wouldn't transfer tracks back to the Ipod that I had previously downloaded from the Itunes store, because it thought that they had been purchased via another computer!

  • 27" iMac dosnt come with system restore discs?

I just purchased a new 27" i5 and have no system restore / software discs. Does Apple no longer include the discs?

If you are really, really, 100% certain you want to do that, you would first erase the hard disk.
When you boot into Lion Recovery, click the Utilities menu and select Disk Utility. When that loads you will see your hard disk on the left column. Select it, then click Erase. A warning dialog will appear telling you what you already know.
Then, install OS X as you did before.
Back up your system before doing any of this, if you want to change your mind. Also, before you start, go into iTunes and "deauthorize" your computer.
Beware that this will delete any preinstalled software that may have been "bundled" with your Mac. iLife comes to mind. "Bundled software" does not include iTunes, Mail, Safari, Address Book and many other programs, but iLife will not be reinstalled as that is considered extra, paid software. Erasing your hard disk will delete it for good, and I am certain it cannot be downloaded from the App Store.

  • ITunes Sync with iPad restores deleted apps

I've thought I've locked this down, but I guess I am not understanding settings or such things. I have an iPad2 updated to latest iOS, and iTunes also with most recent update. I do not sync wirelessly. When I plug my iPad into my PC it automatically starts to sync with no problems. The part that I am trying to avoid is that it automatically reinstalls anything that I've manually deleted off the iPad whether it be apps, songs, documents, etc. . .
I am looking for iTunes to back these sorts of things up and to add changes on the iPad to the PC side of things, but NOT for iTunes to automatically restore things that have been removed from the iPad since the last sync. I've deleted a bunch of apps that I don't use and take up too much space. Same with songs and documents, but today when I plugged it into my PC, iTunes restored everything until I had out of space errors. That being said it created new pages to add all the restored apps to and now I have to go through and delete all those again. My fear is that after all the work I put into make these changes is that next sync it will repeat the same problem. Like I said earier, I thought I had made the proper setting changes, but apparently not.
    Any help is appreciated,
    Thanks!

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer/files/docs/music/pics/etc.
Use this to put everything back on the hard drive.
The ipad syncs with one library. When you installed a new hard drive, the it became a new library. The ipads content will be erased and replaced with content from the new library. That is the way it works. Another reason why you should use your backup copy to put everything back on your new hard drive.

  • Help with system upgrade for CS6

Hello. I am hoping you can give me some advice on what to do (or buy) to improve my video editing system.  I am a bit of novice when it comes to the technical/hardware end of things and I’m having some issues with my current system.
I working in Adobe CS6 Master Suite on a Windows 7 Ultimate PC.  I mainly use Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, and Audition.  I create very complete animations and videos with many layers and effects (via Boris & Red Giant).  I also use Skype to record group video calls (with the program Evaer) for a reality T.V. recap show which I also edit with my Adobe suite.  However I have two main problems.
When I render out a 20 minute premier pro project (with several HD video layers and effects) it takes almost 13 hours.  It seems like this is very long considering my high end components, and set up.  For example I run ONLY my OS off an SSD.  My programs are on another SSD.  The files I use for the video are on another HDD, and I render to another HDD.  I was told by keeping all the aspects on separate hard drives it would speed everything up.  Is that true?  I also am now reading that rendering to a SSD would speed things up.  Should I consider changing my workflow/hard drive set up that way?
My other problem is that when I record my Skype group calls of 4 people (with Evaer) to my SSD the audio is always off when I bring it into Premiere.  I don’t know if this is a problem with Evaer, a codec (it records it as H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Codec.  At 1280 X 720 and 30fps), that SSDs auto compress files, or that my system just cant handle it.  Plus Soundblaster & Nvida both seem to active as audio features on my system I don’t know if that effects anything.  Is there any advice any of you have on this issue as well?  Perhaps another program to record skype or group calls?
Finally… all that aside.  Considering the work I am doing should I just upgrade my system to a better Mobo and graphics card.  I see a lot of people are recommending a dual processor work station.  If so what is a good motherboard, and processor(s) I should get if I build my own workstation?  I have about $4000.00 I could invest in building one if you think would greatly improve my work flow and render times.  I also have a quadro k5000 on the way, and id like to be able to use the memory I have already.
I realize I am asking a lot of questions.  I would truly appreciate any help, advice or just a point in the right direction.  I have included my current system specs below incase that helps with any of my questions.  If you have any other questions or need more information just let me know.  Thank you again in advance for any help you can provide.

Regarding getting more speed from a faster MB / CPU, since you already have a 6-core rig with 24GB of RAM I would think that any gains you would get would not be that dramatic.
Check out your cpu usage (Task manager) and see how busy your cores are during a test render. I am guessing that the Boris and / or Red Giant effects could be jumping your projects from gaining the full multi-core capabilities of the Adobe software.

  • Lost purchased iTunes after computer system restore

How can I retreive purchsed iTunes that I lost after I had my computer system restored? I re-loaded the iPod + iTunes disc and non of my songs seem available to me.

That is going to depend on what you mean by "restore". If you formatted your hard drive and did not have a backup then the music files are gone and you will have to re purchase them all. Same thing if you
If you still have your music files all you need to do is add them to iTunes. Go to File > Add Folder to Lib... and point to where the files are.
If you believe you still have the music files but do not know where they are try doing a search for *.m4p, or *.mpb, or *.mp3. If the files are still on your hard drive then that should find them.

  • Need help with the restore-mailbox command

I just started playing around with the restore-mailbox command now that the Recovery Storage Group and exmerge are not options in 2010. I am hoping someone can help me out here. I am working in a test environment. What I did was backup a database with a
single mailbox on it called testex2010. I used Windows backup. I then restored the database and logs, created the recovery database using the shell and was able to mount the database after running eseutil /R etc...
I now want to recover the data in the mailbox testex2010 to another mailbox called Recovery Mailbox in the production database. I was able to successfully restore testex2010 to itself. I proved  this by deleting all the messages in the live database,
running the restore command and seeing the messages back in the live mailbox.
The command I used was restore-mailbox -identity testex2010 -RecoveryDatabase RDB1
I am prompted with the "are you sure" text and after hitting yes, all goes well. I now want to restore to another mailbox in the production database called Recovery Mailbox. This is where it breaks down. No matter how I format the command, I cannot get it
    to work. Two questions:
    1) should I be able to see mailboxes in the Recovery Database using the GUI or the Shell or do you just assume they are there?
    2) what is the command to restore messages from a mailbox in the Recovery Database to another mailbox in the production environment?
Is what I am trying even possible? Just so you know, I did try this command"
Restore-mailbox -identity testex2010 -RecoveryDatabase RDB1 -RecoveryMailbox "Recovery Mailbox" -TargetFolder testex2010
It fails telling me that the mailbox Recovery mailbox is not in the Recovery Database.

Restore-mailbox -identity testex2010 -RecoveryDatabase RDB1 -RecoveryMailbox "Recovery Mailbox" -TargetFolder testex2010
    The wording of the
Restore-Mailbox command can be tricky. If I look at your example above, this is what it would attempt to do...
Restore the content of the mailbox with display name "Recovery Mailbox" in the RDB into the mailbox testex2010 under a folder named testex2010.
Think of the -Identity parameter as the mailbox you want to restore INTO.
Think of the -RecoveryMailbox parameter as "Recoverying The Mailbox of..."
Also get into the habit of using the DisplayName with -RecoveryMailbox.
