ITunes Home Server?

I just got my new Thecus N2100 NAS with "iTunes Server Capability". Now the problem:
The server shows up in iTunes with all the files - perfect. But how can I add files from here to my library? Drag and drop does not work, same with playlists.
Just adding the folders via drive-mapping is not the solution I´m looking for.
Any ideas?

I can't be certain, but it looks to me like the N2100 is working as if it were a copy of the iTunes application serving via the iTunes Sharing feature. If so, then you cannot copy the files or playlists to your local iTunes library. You can only play them as they appear in the shared list (this would be the same if you were using a computer running iTunes with Sharing set up). Accessing the folders as a shared drive appears to be the only option if you want the tracks in your local library (though that would seem to defeat the purpose of having that server).

  • Home Sharing in Itunes 9 on Windows Home Server

I have installed iTunes 9 and have started using Home Sharing. I want to be able to use Home Sharing with my WHS (Windows Home Server) as our music is stored there and we have iTunes on all computers, plus 2 iphones and iPods.
This would need a Home Sharing server (service) to run on the WHS. Has Apple produced such a piece of software or can I install the Home Sharing component of iTunes 9 on my server? I am advised (by Microsoft) that installing iTunes 9 is not a good idea on WHS as WHS is designed to run services not user apps.
Any suggestions or has Apple someting in plan?
It seems that sharing between PCs is a bit behind the times when many people have moved over to Home Servers or NAS drives.

I too would like to would like to know how to implement iTunes on Windows Home Server (WHS) so my Music library can be stored on a redundant source that is always available to be accessed from any PC in the house. Does Apple have a way to do this or plans to create a product for WHS?
I understand Firefly can be used to stream music content on a WHS, but think this should be a complete iTunes solution with a common library and allow playlist storage from iTune clients that connect to it.

  • TS1490 i am running Windows Home Server 2011 and iTunes can't seem to connect to the iTunes Store nor run Genius on my Library.  What do I need to do?

I am running Windows Home Server 2011 and have installed iTunes on my dedicated server, attached to my router.  I can't connect to the iTunes Store nor run Genius on the server ONLY (iTunes runs fine on by two other PCs and my Apple TV and I share the libary that resides on the server).  I am running a very current version of iTunes 64 bit.  I have run the connectivity test and it failed.
My guess is that there is some setting in the Server software that i need to change to let iTunes access urls or computers on the internet.  Does anyone have any experience with this software combination?
    Thank you

Some guy managed to get this to work. The following link is for iTunes 10.5 but it should work for the current release.

  • Windows Home Server and iTunes

Hi, I have the following setup (all machines on GBit LAN):
    - a Windows Home Server machine with all my music on it (currently stored raw on the filesystem)
    - 3 Windows XP machines
    - 2 iPods
I would like an authoritative answer on how to setup iTunes on my network so that:
    - I can maintain a central, organised store of my music on the Windows Home Server
    - I can access all my music and podcasts on the PCs without having to copy it locally
    - I can sync my iPods normally
I would like to avoid 3rd party software such as Firefly if at all possible. The WHS machine runs headless (as is normal practice) so any solution should avoid the use of desktop apps like iTunes on the server.
As WHS is gaining widespread acceptance as a home file and media server, if Apple do not have a suggested setup for iTunes/WHS I would suggest it would be a good idea to develop one.
Please note, with respect, I would like to avoid speculation. If you haven't actually done the above and proven the solution, please refrain from speculating to avoid people (myself included) going down potential dead ends.
    Thank you

  • ITunes and Windows Home Server

This is probably a question for the Apple developers instead of the community of Apple product users, but here we go:
I'm involved in beta testing Microsoft's new Windows Home Server that's due for release in a few months, and so far it's looking like a much better solution than any network hard drive setups that I've seen so far. I've even put iTunes on it and have been testing syncing an iPod to it, and everything works great. The problem is that Home Server isn't designed to be a computer that people actually log directly into, either by sitting at the keyboard/mouse or by remote desktop. It has a special user interface for managing the server, as using the real tools can break the spiffy dumbed-down versions of stuff they've set up.
What I want to know is whether or not there are any plans for Apple to release a version of iTunes that will have a remote control function of sorts built in, so that playlists can be created, iPods synced and properly disconnected, and the library managed from a remote computer on the same network. Sharing the library isn't a problem. I've already put that feature to use and it works great. But I'd like to be able to sit at my laptop and manage the library stored on my server, via remote interface.
Of course, in keeping all of the content creators happy, the computers that control the remote iTunes setup would have to be authorized to play content from that library.
This could really just be a feature added to the library sharing function.
Thanks in advance for any insight!

  • Copy Itune Music Files from Laptop to Windows Home Server

I just picked up an Acer easyStore unit which runs on Windows Home Server (WHS). This has an Itunes Server functionality and you can see the shared folders from this server in iTunes under "Shared". So, I copied my entire "iTunes" music folder from mu C: Drive on my laptop to my shared music folder on my WHS. Note I did not delete the original files from my C: drive nor have I changed the "Media Folder Location".
Off first glance it looked like all the files and folders copied to the server folder when I check the properties of each folder in Windows (i.e. the properties are identical). However, when I jump back and forth between my "Music" and my "Shared" Libraries within iTunes, it appears that the "Shared" library is less 110 songs (0.5 GB). Why would this be?
    Thanks

  • Restoring Itunes library on a windows home server

Help everyone! I have had my itunes library stored on my HP WHS for the past year. Over the holidays I reformatted my Imac HD as it was sooo slow. Reinstalled OSX 10.6 and the latest version of Itunes.
I have my WHS mounted and have clicked on the option key while opening Itunes, I for the life of me can't get Itunes to see the remote library. The error I get when trying to open this library is: An Itunes library file could not be found in the folder "Itunes Share". Please chose a different folder.
I have tried different folders within the share but no luck, I do notice there are files withing the music folder called "Musiclib.xml.lock" Is my problem that this file is locked and Itunes can't see it?
Please help, I urgently need my music back and my Apple TV content back.

I am trying to find the itunes library file on my windows home server. I believe all the files are on there. Yes it is logged into my WHS automatically, I can see the files on there ect.
Yes the WHS management software is installed on the Mac.
Just went to ilounge, but not sure what I should be doing. I've read about consolidating libraries but I can't open this library that is on my WHS.

  • ITunes very slow downloads of apps, podcasts, and music with library stored on a Windows Home Server (WHS)

First, some history.  I setup a Windows Home Server (WHS) to store all my media.  I had configured itunes to store its library at \\server\music (this would be whatever shared folder you choose to store your music on for your WHS (and possibly NAS box)) and itunes was managing my library.  Once everything was imported into the server, I found I was getting horrible speeds for downloading apps, podcasts, and music.  We are talking 10 minutes to download a 14Mb file on a Fibre connection where I consistently get 25 to 30Mb / second performance.  Syncing my iPad / iPhones was a nightmare due to the time needed to be invested in it.
The server, the PC, the router and corresponding switches were all gigabit and yet I was getting dial-up speeds.  Transfering files between systems was well within spec, but itunes was running as if it were using smoke signals.  I spent some time searching various user groups and support sites to no avail.
To correct this, I only had to log onto the WHS (or NAS) and disable the iTunes Server.
Reboot of the server, reboot your iTunes PC, and you are good to go.  My podcasts went from a 20 minute download time for an average episode of T.W.I.T. to about 7 to 10 seconds.

    UPDATE
Please disregard the above.  While the above did improve performance for a short time, the problem returned.  I spent the next week running a full Spinrite on all 4 1TB HDDs that were in the NAS.  All drives were fine.  I then did some research on the individual drives, and it turns out that 3 of them were 7200RPM Hitachi's and the latest drive added was a 1TB Western Digital GREEN drive (WD10EADS).  This was the source of the issue.
    Additional information available at http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=32179
I replaced the WD10EADS with another 7200RPM drive (seagate this time) and the NAS has been working flawlessly again (again, disregard the above post)

can someone please tell me how to successful install iTunes 10.5.2 on a Windows Home Server (based on Windows 2003)? The installation procedure quits with an error, saying that only Windows XP SP2 an later is supported. Installing and running version 10.5.0 was o.k.

  • Loging into home server to set location of itunes library

    hi,
i have two apples a macbook and a macbook pro (both with os x 10.5) i recently moved my itunes library from my macbook pro to a home server and it will stream from the server to the macbook pro with no problem.
the itunes library on the server is in a directory owned by a user (me) on the server so i have to login as that user to access it. i put it there because i thought it was safer.
now i am trying to set the location of the itunes library on the server for the macbook to use. but i cannot cannot see the user file tree to click on to log in and set the location of the itunes library on the macbook the way that i did when i set the location of the itunes library on the macbook pro.
i can only see the "shared" directory on the server in the file window using the macbook.
when i clicked on the server using the macbook pro file window it displayed the user file system as well as the shared directories. so i just clicked on the user file system it prompted me for login, i did, i set the itunes library to that location and all was well. and itunes works on the macbook pro streaming from the server.
how can display the file system on server in the file window on the macbook to click on and log into and set the location of the itunes library on the macbook the way i did on the macbook pro?
they are both running os x 10.5 the server is debian linux.
    please advise.
    thank you.

I don't have advice for you but would love to learn how to do this. I also have two Macs and am in the process of setting up a Debian (or Ubuntu since I'm new at it) home server. I'll be paying attention to this thread.

  • ITunes 10 and the HP MediaSmart Home Server

MY music is backed up to an HP Mediasmart Server 475. Since upgrading to iTunes 10, the home server is listed, all the playlist folders can be see but the music is not visible. Logging into the server and looking in the public music folder shows that all the data is still present.
What has happened with iTunes 10?

Apple broke the Firefly stuff that these 3rd-party itunes servers were using.
You need to downgrade back to itunes 9.

  • ITunes and the Windows Home Server (on Acer  h 340 hardware)

    Hi,
I am going to install a Windows Home Server on an Acer H 340 server. I would like to route iTunes library to that server to free disc space on my laptop.
Will I still be able to use the clients (my Dell) iTunes to manage my ipod with the library on the WHS ?
How do I route iTunes to the WHS and is there something I need to take care of or avoid whilst teaming up the two ?
I will keep on using Windows Media Player 11 for streaming my music around the house, though... so it is iTunes really only for the managing of my ipod...
Unfortunately, Acer does not ship the WHS with any add-on software liek HP does with its home server, that eases working with iTunes through a special iTunes server application on top of the WHS OS... Any recommendations for that ?
    Thanks a lot,
    D

What you need to do is map a network drive on your PC to your WHS Music shared folder (make it M: for Music, if you like). Then move/copy your entire iTunes library to your new M-drive. Then when you start iTunes hold down the shift key and locate your library on your M-drive. You'll have to make sure that you are letting iTunes manage your music so that it will copy your music to the M-drive when you add it to iTunes.
Make sure that you enable duplication for your Music folder if you have more than one hard drive.
I am not an expert by any means but I am running iTunes this way on my WHS.
I think the add-on software that you are referring to is Firefly Media server. It is easily added to any WHS. When installed you can direct it to a folder and it will find all playlists and music files and present them to iTunes clients on your network. It is very slick.
    Hope this helps,

  • ITunes Library on Home Server

I'd like to manage and maintain a single iTunes library on my home server and provide access to iTunes operating in two PCs and a Mac. The music files themselves (~13,000) are stored on the server; there is no music on the computers. The iTunes library files (.itl and/or .xml -- I'm not sure which file does what) on each of the computers know where the music is stored on the server. Each of the computer's iTunes streams music from the server independently of the other computers. Virtually all of my music has been ripped from CDs. I've only bought and downloaded a dozen tunes or so, and those are authorized on all three computers.
As it is, I have virtually identical copies of the iTunes library files on each computer. I frequently update the information in the library files (new playlists, ratings, artwork, composer data, etc.) on one PC, and it's a pain to update the other two sets of library files to match. I'm happy for the library information (playlists, ratings, etc.) to be the same on all three computers. I.e., I have no need or desire for different playlists, ratings, etc. on each computer.
So, I'd like to store the .itl and .xml music library files on the server too.
My question is: How does one get iTunes to use .itl and .xml music library files stored in some location other than the iTunes default storage location for its library files, e.g., c:/Users/<user>/My Music/iTunes? How do I get the iTunes on the PCs and on the Mac to look somewhere else [on the server] for its music library files?
I believe that the Edit/Preferences/Advanced "media folder location" option is just that -- the location of the media files themselves, not the location of the library files.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    -- Bill

    Nevermind.
I figured out how to get iTunes to use a library on the server rather than the one on the local computer, but it turns out that the iTunes on different computers cannot simultaneously use a single library. Any one of them can, but the others are locked out so long as the first iTunes is running. I suppose this is because iTunes is constantly updating the library with play counts, etc. I wondered how that would work, and now I know -- it won't.
So, in my situation I'm resigned to having to "copy" the two library files to the other two computers from time to time. Oh well, ....
