Itunes - home share or not?

I would appreciate someones help please.
We have bought our kids an ipod touch each for xmas. We want to set them up on either home share or their own itunes accounts.
As the kids are quite young, we want to have some control on what, when and how they use the ipods.
We have a itunes account on iMac which is synced with an ipad, and I dont know if we should home share or give them individual itune accts.
Can anyone give me the +ve or -ve of either way?
We still want to give them some flexibility to download using credit but we want to contol the content and allow them to make separate selections.
Also, as most of the songs that we have downloaded already on the house itune acct was for them we want them to have access to these without having to re-download.
Any thoughts would be great!
Thanks

I'd try the following document with that one:
iTunes: Missing folder or incorrect permissions may prevent authorization

  • ITunes Home share disappears ,restarting iTunes fixes for a while.

I have a PC server (no monitor) with a newly installed win 7x64, latest updates, and latest iTunes.  Homesharing is enabled.
This is connected to a gigabit HP Procurve switch.
An apple TV2 ,wireless accesspoint, and ADSL modem are also connected to the same switch (and several other intel PC's around the house).
I use my iPhone to select the iTunes homeshare, and airplay to the apple tv.
This works just fine for about 1/2 hour or more , but then the homeshare just disappears.
Restarting iTunes on the server fixes the problem , but, the home share drops out again.
When it goes down, I used the 'bonjour browser' on another networked pc (ie, not the itunes one) and the home share is not listed. So, I'm tending to think that itunes is 'crashing' internally somewhere.
I dont think it is the firewall, since it would either work all the time or not at all.
The apple tv is connected to the itunes server via a very good switch and ethernet cabling. It is a very simple setup.
This is highly frustrating since I've banked on apple products to power the music in my house.  But, every 1/2 hour i've got to restart itunes. Annoying if I am hosting a party.
    Any ideas?

The notebook and desktop cannot see each other, but they can see the netbook. I know that going forward, I will need to manually manage the ratings on both computers, bit I have smart playlists set up to do that. My main issue is that because I duplicating the exact same folders on the vista laptop tinthe windows 7 desktop, this threw something off in home share where they do not recognize each other. I need to know what was thrown off so I can fix it.

  • ITunes Home Sharring not working correctly.

My itunes homesharing is not working correctly. I have a Windows 8 computer and I am trying to share with my partners Widows 7 computer. Both computers are running the newest version of itunes 11 (downloaded yesterday). I sign in and turned on home sharring with the same user id and password. For the first 20-30 mins it worked perfectly, I could open her library and she could open mine and we could download songs from each other with no issue. We closed both computers and about 2 hours later turned them on to try again. Now my computer (Windows8) always shows up on hers but her computer only shows up about 1/2 the time for me, and half of that time if you click on her computer it says loading then stops and her computer has disapperard again. I can eventually get it to work after many turning off and on of home sharring but it take about 15-20min each time to get it working. Is this a problem others have seen? Does anyone know a solution?

This issue has now been completely resolved with the introduction of iTunes 9.2 Everything up and running again - thank you Apple! (Still an issue with Dictionary app/Wikipedia not functioning correctly, this has not been resolved)

  • Windows Vista iTunes Home Share Not showing up on Apple tv2 through LAN

I have 2 new Apple TV's and I'm having the same problem on both, so I think it is an issue with my network or the Vista Laptop. I'm hoping for helpful suggestions here.
    My setup:
2 Apple TV2's connected with wifi
    D-Link DIR655 Router
MacbookPro, iPad, And iPhones all connected with wifi.
iTunes Home Sharing and Airplay all work fine with all of the above.
    The Problem:
I have an old Vista Laptop I want to use as an iTunes Server to store movies on and such, for use on the Apple TV's.
If I connect the laptop to the network with wifi the Apple tv's find the Vista iTunes Homeshare just fine. But when I connect the laptop via Lan Wire to the router the Apple tv's don't seem to find the laptop. This is a problem because i want to just connect it wired and tuck the laptop away in a closet, so it is not a waste of wifi spectrum, but no joy so far. I have checked firewalls and things like that but no luck. Any ideas out there?

I was also having this problem but in my case it was not caused by the D Link router. My problem was caused by mcafee firewall. To get itunes sharing to work I needed to add an itunes firewall/port rule to enable TCP=3689 UDP=5353 and enable this for ALL PCs. Setting this for PCs in Home/Work networks did not work.

  • ITunes home share bug?

Hi, I found that is I have two computers on a home network where both have the same user name, only one computer see the share, after I renamed the user of one computer, I was able so see both home shares. Does anyone else experienced this problem?

I see the same problem. All of my five computers have the same user name but each computer has a different name. I did this to make life much easier to keep the in-sync and it has worked for years. Recently I purchased an iPad for my wife, downloaded a bunch of APPS on my system and was going nuts trying to get the Home Share working. I view this as a bug in iTunes but I'm sure that Apple will not see it as a bug. I must have wasted at least 20 hours on this bug, trying to get it to work, going over the instructions numerous times, running numerous searches and finally I find your post. Thank you for posting the issue.
Is there any way to report this as an issue to Apple?

  • ITunes Home sharing is not being received on my

Current home network MBP, MBA and a Windows PC.  All are using the same iTunes account. All are on the same local network.  All have home sharing turned on and all can view all media stored on the other machines.
I also have two televisions both with apple TVs.  However, the main media server the MBP, of recent times has had two problems.  Firstly, when serving media to the apple TV it will not allow video media purchased thorugh the iTunes store to be played on the Apple TV noting home sharing is not turned on.  However the same media can be played on the other computers using home sharing.
More recently, the MBP will be identified as an available computer on the apple TV however, when connection is attempted it fails.  However if I use Airplay, I can stream from the MBP to the Apple TV. The other two computers can serve media to the apple TV's without an problem.
I have rebooted and reloaded software on the Apple TV.
I have deleted and reinstalled iTunes on the MBP.
I am at a loss what to look for now.
    Any ideas.

when serving media to the apple TV it will not allow video media purchased thorugh the iTunes store to be played on the Apple TV
Meaning what?  What happens when you try to play it?  Did you activate ATV with your iTunes account?

  • ITunes Home Share file transfer occasionally very slow

Hello... I just wanted to ask a question about a situation that occasionally occurs with my iTunes Home Sharing. Sometimes, the transfer of files from my Windows to my Mac is extremely slow. It does eventually finish successfully but this only happens once in a while, as the transfer process is usually a breeze. I wanted to know if when the connection isn't as strong and the transfer is slow, do my files get in any way damaged or incorrectly transferred? Like, bitwise? (is data lost or missed etc...). I know that moving digital media around can be a bit sketchy sometimes.
    Thanks.

is there a way to find out why "a file is in use" / what process is using it, and kill that process?
Yes. Launch the Terminal utility and enter this command:
    sudo lsof | grep "sometext"
That character after "lsof" is a "vertical bar", which should be on the far right of the row with "P". The first character of "lsof" is a lower-case letter "L". The text "sometext" should be replaced with at least part of the name of the file that seems to be locked. The quotes aren't necessary unless there's a space (or one of a few other odd characters) in the text you put in the command. After you type the text, press <return>. You'll be prompted for your administrative password.
If the culprit turns out to be Finder, try clicking on the Finder icon on the Dock while you hold down an "option" key, then choose "Relaunch".
how can I find out if some process is accessing the Time Capsule hard drive, keeping it busy and making the transfers slow?
That's a little harder. You could launch Activity Monitor and click on the "Network" tab in the lower part of the window. I'd also check the quality of the signal to the Time Capsule
If you have an Apple AirPort base station, I'd use the advice in this thread to investigate the signal and noise levels that each Mac sees, as described in this thread:
