ITunes Home Sharing doesn't work. Why?

Hi there,
I'm trying to get someone else's library with Home Sharing, but it doesn't seem to work.
In iTunes, it shows the library on the left, but when I try to click on it iTunes asks for a password. The password doesn't seem to work, even though it does for exactly the same thing on another Mac.
All of these Macs are on the same network, and both Macs have been restarted, and both have iTunes 10.
Any idea why it doesn't work and how I could make it work?

Thanks! I didn't realise there was a specific forum for Home Sharing... found it now and will repost there.

  • After installing Itunes 10.1.2.17, homes sharing doesn't work no more!

After i installed itunes 10.1.2.17, home sharing isn't working anymore. I checked to make sure it is turned on & the bonjour is enabled. What happened? It was working before with the previous version.

I see exactly the same symptoms; previously Home Sharing worked fine. After installing 10.1.2.17 on the PC that contains the main library, the library appears on my other XP and Windows 7 laptops, but on clicking on the library focus returns to the Music folder after several seconds.
I have a Dell Dimension 2400 running Windows XP Home Edition 5.1 build 2600. It is connected to a Linksys router by cable. The laptops are connected using WiFi. Nothing else has changed in the setup apart from the iTunes upgrade.
    Any ideas?

  • ITunes Home Sharing No Longer Working Under Lion

Home Sharing is no longer working between Lion and my Apple TV or iPhone. I am able to watch Netflix through my Apple TV (2nd Gen) so I do have connectivity. I have restarted both devices, and updated iTunes to 10.4. Under "Advanced" in iTunes, Home Sharing is turned on. In Preferences in iTunes under Sharing, it says Status: On, no users connected, even though my Apple TV is connected to the network.
Is this problem isolated, or are others experiencing the same issue?

I'm up and running. Spoke with Apple and they had me go to : preferences, network and create a new location. That seems to have reset something. I had to reset all my devices back to my main network that had stopped working. The guest network will not let Home Sharing work, only the main network.
Others have been able to use Home Sharing without clicking "Done" after typing in their password. After you click "Done" the Shared disappears in iTunes.

  • ITunes 9.2.1.5 for Windows: Sharing / Home Sharing doesn't work

I have a windows XP laptop and sometime within the last two months (after upgrading to 9.x??) sharing and home sharing stopped working.
I have read the troubleshooting post, and everything is configured correctly. It doesn't work at home OR at work (although MAC users at work are having no problems).
Can anyone confirm that this is a BUG in 9.2? Does anyone have any fixes? As I said, my ports are open. Of note: my iPhone remote app works on my home network with our Mac, but not the PC, indicating that the problem isn't the router. I did delete exceptions for iTunes, Bonjour, and ports 3689 TCP, 5353 UDP (which, curiously, allowed my remote to work with my PC itunes, but the remote does NOT show up in the sidebar.
I think this is a bug, beyond the software firewall issues.
Any help anyone can give me will be met with plaudits and wreaths of laurels.
    Thanks

Let me know if this article works out for you: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
I haven't used a Windows laptop in a few years, so I don't have a lot to go from. Good Luck!

  • Home Sharing doesn't work on my iMac (2013)

    Hi,
I have an iMac 2013, all my music and movies are on it.
    Home Sharing is enabled.
I have the iMac, an iPhone, an iPad and an Apple TV all on the same network, sponsored by a Time Capsule.
None of the 3 devices can connect to the iMac library. The Apple TV doesn't see it. When I add the library in the Remote app of the iPhone and iPad, I have to enter the code in iTunes but then after the app is "looking for the library" without finding it.
The main reason was for me to load my movies from the Apple TV in my living room, but it doesn't work as it can see the Home Sharing. I can though AirPlay the iMac on the Apple TV (so definitely on the same network).
Any idea? I've done the whole bunch of crap from Apple, nothing works. Rebooted like 20 times each.

I brought my macbook air at home, everything worked perfectly: iPhone, iPad and Apple TV can connect. So basically I guessed that the issue was coming from the iMac, something preventing it to be discovered. I've checked the bonjour broadcasting and oh, surprise, the iMac wasn't broadcasting... Weird because it's a setup from a Time Machine, the environment I am running currently on the macbook air.
Anyway, if this can help someone else:
    I've ran:
    ps aux | grep mDNS
and saw that for the iMac the daemon was launched with the argument -NoMulticastAdvertisements.
I've setup the daemon to run back as normal and restarted the computer:
sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder ProgramArguments -array /usr/sbin/mDNSResponder -launchd
After the reboot, everything works flawlessly (it has never worked before for the 6 months I had the Apple TV).
Also interesting discovery and I think it's new because I don't remember being able to do that before, but some of my devices are on the separate 5Ghz network, some are on the 2.4Ghz and they can still all communicate flawlessly. I can use AirPlay on the Export Express that is on the 2.4 from the iMac that is on the 5Ghz, and I can access the iMac library from whatever band. Pretty nice!

  • Home sharing doesn't work without disabling firewall entirely

Will not work with just an exception to allow incoming connections for iTunes. Must disable firewall entirely. Worked under 10.5.2. Broke with 10.5.3.
I am on OSX Leopard. Any ideas?

  • HT2688 After downloading new version of iTunes, home sharing no longer working.

I have a home network of 2 Mac Minis and a MacBook Pro, in different parts of the house, mainly sharing music. SInce I downloaded the latest version of iTunes on the three computers (between 10th and 12th of June 2013) the three computers iTunes secreens no longer register the other libraries. I have checked that home sharing etc are switched on. Any suggestions?  Thanks

What exactly does this have to do with iTunes for Windows, the forum to which you've posted?

  • Home sharing doesn't work

I have recently purchased a MacBook Air and want to convert all of my iTunes library from my WinVista Sony vaio laptop. I have around 20GB of music on my current library and ha the laptop for about 4 years. I have followed all of the steps about home sharing and all seems to be going fine. As the mac contains no music on iTunes yet it comes up on the windows laptop very quickly. However, with the mac it loads my library (without showing any songs or data) for about 1 minute then it just stops loading and switches back to the blank library. I am really confused because I have followed all of the steps and they are both up to the latest version of iTunes
help would be appreciated, thank you

i'm sure you did but try disabling home sharing from the advanced menu on both machines then turn it back on for both machines and use the same iTunes store account.
if still no joy, you could try *removing iTunes completely* on both Macs (click here and follow the instructions), then reinstall it using the standalone installer from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
note this will not do anything to your media files, playlists, ratings, etc.

  • Home Sharing doesn't work with Vista?

I'm having trouble trying to set up the new Home Sharing feature between my two computers.
Computer #1 uses Vista x64 OS while Computer #2 uses XP OS (Yes, they're wired on the same network). Both have iTunes 9.0.1.8 software installed and are authorized computers under a single account. My XP comp can see my Vista Library just fine while my Vista x64 comp gives me an error:
"The shared library [insert name here] is not responding. (-3259) Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."
Multiple web sources suggested opening this port as well as Port 5353 and adding iTunesHelper.exe and iTunesPhotoProcessor.exe to my "Exceptions" list in my personal/virus scan firewalls. I've done this to both comps and my router with no result. I've checked the box under Preferences > Share my library on my local network and there is still no change. Googling this error has led me to believe the problem lies within the iTunes software.
If anyone has any ideas or information on this problem, I'd appreciate the help. Thank you.

I've restarted everything and deauthorized and rechecked sign in name and reset the iTV and so forth.  iTV will not see the shared computer, although the iPad and iPhone do.  I've wasted too much time on this.  It occured after the recent update. Wonder when Apple will acknowledge and fix.

  • HT1947 Home sharing doesn't work. I tried all the items in the troubleshooting section. It just sits there and says turn on home sharing in itunes in the remote app. It's on. Connecting to a library doesn't work either because my phone doesn't show up on

Iphone 5. Anything else I can try? Itunes and iphone and the app are all up to date.

  • So, Home Sharing doesn't work with WiFi?

I was previously able to stream content from my Mac (via ethernet) to Apple TV. I've since started using Airport Extreme as a hub - everything reaches the internet but now no Mirroring, iTunes sharing or file sharing.

Answer: Apple TV was on my guest network. Switched to main network, problem solved.

  • Itunes Home Sharing HD (720p) for Ipad and Iphone... Buffering Freezing...is a mess

I'd like to report a comment that I found on mac-forums.com that summerize the situation(http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/ios-apps/231842-ios-4-3-issues-home-sharing.htm l#post1273744):
"While home sharing works, it doesn't seem like a finished product to me. Since the appletv 2 is built on iOS, I don't understand why home sharing on the iPad does not work the EXACT same way as it does on the apple tv 2. These are the problems I have with home sharing on the iPad for video:
    1) My shows should be displayed in order, which they are not. What I see is a random jumble of different shows, different seasons of the same show are not even placed together consistantly.
    2) Once I select a season of a show, the episodes are not in order.
    3) I can't see which episodes are watched or unwatched, nor can I resume an episode that I started on my computer (or start an episode on my iPad and finish it on my computer).
    4) The streaming seems slow for HD content and stops every now and again to buffer.
The appletv 2 has none of these issues. Being as they run the same OS, I can only conclude that apple has a lot more work to do with home sharing on the iPad and iPhone, or they are deliberately hamstringing home sharing because now that they are releasing an HDMI adapter, a well implemented home sharing system would eat into the sales of the appletv 2."
I think that Apple must find a solution about this....also with ipad IOS 4.3.5 home sharing doesn't work properly with hd content....and I assure you is not a network problem

    Cannot start ITunes on  Laptop
    WHat happens?
Have your tried removing and reinstalling iTunes?
Cannot start ITunes on  Laptop (linked to IPAD) at all but can from Browser.
What does "can from browser" mean?
Trying to share content from my IPAD and APple TV.
You don't share content from AppleTV (as it contains no content) and you can AirpPlay from iPad to AppleTV, not share content.
To turn on Home Sharing on the iPad, Settings > Store.
THis allow soyu to view the content of the iTune slibrary on your comnoputer.
