ITunes Hung-Freezes Upon Opening

Before I go into the specific problem, here is a brief history of what has gone down the last few months, just in case you see the problem there.
November 07:
System begins to systematically fail. Back everything up to an external hard drive, then reset OS. All is well.
Mid-November 07:
I notice that many songs didn't get transferred to external hard drive, usually whole albums, so my iTunes is missing about 250 songs I do not presently possess. But wait, I realize they are all safely tucked away on my iPod! So I download Senuti, Isync, and IpodRip trying to extract the songs. None work. Shortly thereafter, I notice shoddy iTunes to iPod performance, meaning certain songs from new albums do not get uploaded. Later, I get a message saying iTunes cannot be read from or written to. All the while, it says the are X number of songs that cannot be found while opening.
Today:
All was going fine until today when, iTunes library of 4000+ is randomly reset to 55 of the first songs I ever imported. Weird. Luckily, the music folder is fine, and I drag it in (as I never exported a saved library). This in effect deletes the songs that had missing/unlinked files, so I decided to plug in my iPod, conceded that I would never get the songs back that way. However, before I could, it kept freezing up of doing the gapless playback info, getting caught on two songs and repeating the process.
When I did plug in the iPod, the same error message came up. ***. I read Apple's page on the matter, and think it might be related to Senuti, etc., so I delete those. No effect. Now I decide I have nothing to lose, and hit restore button. Now when I plugged in iTunes, all that happens is a few lousy podcasts sync and nothing else. Afterwards, iTunes would not even work, and according to Activity Monitor, would get "hung" right after opening. ***. Please help. Need iPod. Need iTunes....

Haha. I have about 45 GB of content total. (thousands of songs, hundreds of audiobooks, hundreds of music videos, a few movies) I'm using the most recent version of iTunes, whatever it is. =P and my computer is very screwy. I've had it freeze 3 times where I had to restart the computer by holding down the power button, and sometimes the screen becomes covered with noise and the monitor becomes completely useless for a few minutes.

  • After successfully downloading the newest version of itunes, it freezes upon opening. How do I correct this?

When I try to open itunes after downloading the most recent version, itunes freezes on my computer. How can I fix this? I'd like to update my iphone4 to the new operating system but it locks up too after syncing. Any suggestions?

    Moved to Adobe Reader.
Assuming you are running Windows, try running the Acrobat/Reader Cleanup Tool, then re-installing.

  • Mail app freezes upon opening after Mavericks install

Following my installation of mavericks, apple mail app freezes upon opening. Windows do not open; program immediately begins "not responding." Having followed this with a force quit loop for a day, I installed airmail, a serviceable alternative, but not well integrated with address book. As such, I'm interested in finding a fix for mail app. Advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have same problem with my macbook pro 2009
Worked fine when first installed now mail app fails to open. Not the same issue as with macbook airs.

  • A day ago I updated my iPhone4 to io5 and I updated iTunes on my PC using Windows 7(64 bit). Now iTunes freezes upon opening and I have to force it to close. Anything I missed along the way?

A day ago I updated my iPhone4 to io5 and iTunes update as well. I use windows7 (64bit). now iTunes freezes at open and I have to force it closed. Anythng I missed along the way?

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

  • Updated itunes, now it freezes upon opening. even after reinstall.

Hey, I recently updated to the newest version of itunes and whenever i open it it freezes automatically. It pops up and i can't click on anything or do anything.
I've tried reinstalling it and redownloading it multiple times but I still get the same results. I've also made sure to download the one with quicktime.
I tried downloading an older version but it says that my library was created by a newer version and it can't be read. Something along those lines.
Can someone please help me? I'm at my wits end about what to do.

I'm having the same issues! iTunes over the past few days has been freezing on opening (sometimes), freezing during routine playback (sometimes), and when it freezes it refuses to die even when I try to force-quit!
I tried rebuilding my iTunes library as suggested, but it didn't work for me. It froze less than 30 minutes after I went through that rigamarole...

  • TS2755 Messages freeze upon opening

Upon opening messages it freezes.  I would like to try to delete messages?

    HI,
When iChat 3 came out someone tested whether it would work on the platform that was running iChat 2 and also tested whether iChat 2 would work on the later OS.
This eventually led to the Reinstall procedure for iChat 3 up to the iChat 5 version.
Since then the app has required either a Backup version from when it was working, a copy on another machine running the same OS and app version numbers (the two go hand in hand) or you have to Reinstall the whole OS which will always update you to the latest version of the OS (and in the case of Messages any updates it has had).

  • ITunes freezing upon opening

I used to have a 20GB iPod, and I never used iTunes. A few friends of mine put me on to a program called "Ephpod" which I used to upload music on to my iPod. I just thought it was more convenient than iTunes, personally.
Now I just bought a 80GB iPod and I want to use iTunes to buy TV shows and what not. I used Ephpod to load all of my music on to the new iPod, and now when I try to open iTunes it usually freezes as soon as it recognizes my iPod. I'm wondering if it has something to do with my using another program to manage my iPod. Any thoughts? Thanks so much in advance

    urhggg same with me.
Its been happening to me ever since I updated it.
I open iTunes, it opens fine but I cant click on anything, and I force shut the iTunes down.
Tried restarting comp and stuff, don't want to reinstall because I might lose all my data and I havnt backed it up in a long time....

  • MacBook Pro freezes upon opening iTunes.

The probably has a very specific pattern on my computer, and I am hoping others have had this problem and know how to fix it. When I open iTunes the icon bounces and then stops. My whole computer freezes and I can't use the cursor. I use the command/alt/esc buttons to force quit. Once I quit the computer works perfectly...the weird thing is that immediately after going through that 5 minute process, I can open iTunes easily with no problems. The other thing is if I leave iTunes open and close my laptop, when I open it back up it is frozen again.
PLEASE HELP. It is such an inconvenience.

It turns out after all this WAS my problem. I was unsatisfied with my first visit to the Apple store, and since my stuff wasn't all backed up there was nothing I could do at that point. After I did back up my stuff, I restored to factory settings, which didn't solve anything. Still crashing. Went back to Apple store with printout of Macbook Pro 2010 model GPU failure extended warranty and when they checked my computer it turned out that WAS the issue. This is my first night back with it, but they said it passed the video check a couple times, so we'll see.
In the end, the $300 service (which did seem inexpensive with all things considered) ended up being free of charge. I am happy.

  • ITunes freezes upon opening

iTunes has ceased to work properly. How should I fix it?
I click on the iTunes icon in my dock, and the window shows up (in minimized view) but when I make it large view the beachball of death shows up and iTunes will not respond again. This makes iTunes, to put it subtly, entirely useless. For the time being I'm using Songbird, and if it's not fixed soon I am going to stick with Songbird.

I have tried everything told to me by both the Apple Troubleshooting and several forums, and nothing can fix it for more than a few minutes. Running iTunes in safe mode allows it to work but I have no plug-ins installed.
    Thanks in advance.

  • ITunes constantly freezes when opening, no error message

    Please help!
ITunes has been working fine. One day I opened it and it got stuck on the default of opening up the music store. The only way I can get out of it is CtlAltDel.
    There is no error message.
I have installed & re-installed it numerous times even with the windows tools to remove old files.
Someone please help. I cannot use ITunes at all!

    replying to lunagoddess77
the scroll bars don't even come up.
okay. that symptom is often associated with a damaged QuickTime. (iTunes needs a properly functioning QuickTime in order to work correctly.)
so let's try swapping out your QuickTime.
head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly (without freezing) now?

  • Itunes constantly freezes upon startup

so whenever i open itunes it immediatly freezes. ive tried uninstalling and re-installing to no avail. is it possible that im not un-installing everything which is why the problem persists? any help would be appreciated

See if it will open with a new blank library.
Press *and hold* the shift key while starting itunes. Choose new library. Name it something like Test so you can find it easy later to delete it.

  • Itunes suddenly freezing when opened!!

    hello,
Bizzare, recent, and annoying. When i start iTunes, the window opens, but as soon as it tries to "determine gapless song playback" for the remaining 200 or so songs (it successfully did the other 1000) it locks up (freezes) and the spinning beach ball of death appears. the only way out is with a force quit which is also very laggy. I managed to use my tiger reflexes and hit the little 'x' stop button in time, at which point iTunes seeme dto be working normally again...but a minute or so after the beach ball re-appeared this time and once again the whole thing freezes.
Apple: this is very very frustrating as iTunes is my main Audio-CD burning, music downloading and music listening app. Please don't do this the microsoft way and get us stuck with your propriety programs, which, up to now, worked fine, but as soon as they develop a fault leave our apples app-less! thank you.
How am i to remedy the malady?

has anyone got a solution to this problem? i have
been unable to use my itunes for about a months now...
I was loading a podcast-the screen froze up-no scroll bar-I tried removing itunes and reinstalling same thing happens--my dock was not attached when I did this

  • Photoshop CS6 freezes upon opening

Running CS6 64-bit on a Windows 7 machine. Everything is updated, and it was working fine yesterday and every day before for the 2 months we've been running it on this machine. New today:
Open Photoshop and it opens the window but you can't click anything. It's like a pretty image file of what your PS experience would look like. Can't close it because even the little red X doesn't register as anything. Have to force quit from Task Manager. Restarted the system (full shut down, pause, start, not just a system restart).
Deleted the Preferences file and restarted the system. That kind of helped. Now we can open and click around for about 25 seconds. That's enough time to change my performance preferences and close the program before it freezes. So I did that and restarted the system. No change. I can also open the "open file" dialogue, but the second that opens, everything freezes back into that pretty picture of what it would look like if I were to be using PS.
Nothing else on the system freezes while PS is frozen. I can do webby stuff and work in other Adobe programs, check my email, dig around in my explorer, pretty much anything I want as long as it isn't PS.
Exception: If I open Bridge, I can use it just fine until I try to open a file from Bridge in Photoshop. Then both programs freeze until I force quit PS. After that, Bridge is happy again. If I try to use Bridge to run a PS process, I get the message window that PS is currently running another process, would I like to queue this one. No matter what I hit, everything gets angry until I force quit Photoshop.
I spoke to a nice man on the customer service line who was very good at reading suggestions like delete preferences or completely reinstall the suite from his list of fixes, but didn't seem to understand at all what I was asking him. So I turn to you, oh forum of knowledge. Anyone know how to fix this? We've reinstalled video drivers. We're currently trying running a repair off the Windows OS disk.
We would like to not have to uninstall and reinstall the whole suite. Everything else works great. AE is happy, Illustrator is happy, Bridge is happy so long as we don't make it talk to PS. If there's a way to just reinstall or run a repair on PS without affecting the rest of the suite, that would be an option too.

    Hello,
    I've got similar problem,
When I turn on my compagny computer everything is alright. Photoshop CS6 13.0 x32 start correctly. i can work on picture as expected.
But during the day, Photoshop doesn't want to open other file (any file).
I can work on with a picture that still open and save it, but can not open anything else.
    Restart Photoshop doesn't work.
I must reboot the computer to correct this and open other file.
I'm on windows 7 SP1 with administrator rights
No plugin installed, I'm a beginner with Photoshop
Can you help me please ?
