ITunes ibrary location resets itself

Hello,
I have my iTunes library located on an external drive. Works nicely. But every now and then, the location of the library resets to the default location (~/Music/...). Any ideas on why it does this? I keep the external drive mounted at all times.

same problem since the latest update to 7.7.1, every 2/3 days the location of the itunes folder reverts back to default.
this is causing itunes library to be split over two locations and requires consolidation of entire folder again - with large amounts of movies, tv shows and music this is a real pain and takes considerable time.
Yet to find a solution on any of the discussion forums, one would be greatly appreciated

  • ITunes library location resetting itself

I have moved my iTunes Library to a server drive so that it can be backed up, but iTunes keeps resetting it to my local hard drive. I had first moved the library several weeks ago, and then accidentally discovered it had changed back to my local hard drive all by itself at some point. I had moved it prior to the recent 6.0 and 6.0.1 releases (currently running 6.0.1), so I thought maybe the upgrade from 5 had reset it. A couple of nights ago, I got it all cleaned up and recombined back on the server drive. I had downloaded the 2 new free downloads this week, and then had numerous podcast updates during the day. That night, I found that again the location of my library has changed back to my local hard drive, and those downloads I had just done had went there. Again, I changed the library location through Preferences (with the "Keep iTunes Music folder oganized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder" options checked), and then "Consolidated" the library. Today, at around 4:00 this afternoon, it again switched back to the default C: drive location, when no one was even home. What's up with this? iTunes is supposed to allow changing of the library location, and I have followed the proper procedures, but it will not stay!
    Help!

Speculation about future iTunes releases, features, or bug fixes is not allowed to be discussed here, but I can safely say that iTunes 7 won't be out for a long time. We went from 4.9 to 6 in six weeks recently. Highly unusual, and I don't expect that to be repeated anytime soon. However, that doesn't mean version 6 won't be updated.
What's important to remember is that your setup isn't the majority of iTunes' target market. That translates into your feature request or bug fix requirement probably being lower on the ladder of priority.
What would be useful to the iTunes community here is someone to volunteer to do some extensive testing and report the results.
    - try multiple network/mount methods
    - quit/launch iTunes quickly and see if there's any correlation with the speed of disk access
    - make a note of any other processes that may have locked the network volume for a brief period, causing iTunes not to have access

  • ITunes 11.x resetting itself every time its closed and relaunched

Itunes 11.x keeps resetting itself every time I close it and then later reopen. It prompts accepting the end user agreement, then upon entering, all the sync preferences are reset. Doesn't seem to effect backup of apps or music library. I'm using windows vista 64. Tried reinstalling several times removing every apple component including, all apple sub files, preference files in windows user folders, and all other apple folders, with no change upon reinstallation. Tried resetting sync history/cache in iTunes preferences, tried resetting admin rights in windows, tried enough to make this miserable. Can't find any solutions online though have found a lot of people complaining about the same issues with iTunes 11. Thought about removing 11 and installing older version though figured I'd try here first for a solution.
    Thank you for the help...

  • My iTunes 11 client resets itself.

My iTunes 11 client wouldn't work, and my Windows 7 laptop was restarted (don't remember how it did), and whenever I load iTunes 11, it asks me to accept the Terms of Service, and I have to sign in, again. What's going on, and how can I fix this?

  • My Folder location reset itself to the default

No matter how I try to change the default setting to where all of my music is, it still does not find all my music. I know it's there though! If I click on a song it can't find, I tell it I want to find it, and there it is right in the folder I told iTunes it was. This came about very suddenly. Plus, it recognizes some files but not others. There is not rhyme or reason to which it recognizes and which it does not as far as I can tell. I'm tired of having to click on the songs I want to hear, search for them, and then hear them. What can I do?

Do you have a backup of your iTunes LIbrary.itl file from BEFORE this happened?
If you catch it right away, what you did should work. (Closing iTunes, enable exHD, start iTunes)
But if you've made changes (such as clicking on ! items and finding them), you are sadly out of luck on having everything exactly as before.
In the furture you can make regular backups of the iTunes library files to avoid this sort of thing.

  • My iphone 3gs is not working properly, when switched on it says 'Update Completed' as though it has just been updated. On the next screen it says to 'Connect to iTunes'. It doesn't, however, connect to iTunes and more often than not just resets itself.

My iPhone 3gs is not working properly and hasn't been since about September of last year. When switched on (Quite often it won't even turn on) it says 'Update Completed' as though it has just been updated. On the next screen it says to 'Connect to iTunes'. It doesn't, however, connect to iTunes and just resets itself over and over until power is gone. Occasionally after switching on and off a few times it functions normally for a few hours and some times even a couple of days but eventually always turns itself off and goes back to the 'Update Completed' screen. Does anyone know what might be causing this and/or a way of fixing it?

  • Ipod constantly resetting itself when plugged into Itunes.

My new 5G 80gig Ipod constantly resets itself when I plug it into Itunes. Any ideas? The Ipod is new...

Here's what I've done so far unsuccessfully:
Placed it into disk mode, but it does the same thing. Once plugged into the computer the ipod is recognized by both windows and Itunes but it resets itself within 30 seconds. It constantly keeps resetting itself.
Also, since it keeps resetting itself, and therefore disappears form itunes, I cannot reformat/hardreset it via Itunes....

  • IPod resets itself playing .m4a's (music ripped from cd's)

My new ipod video works fine playing mp3's or music from itunes store, but resets itself any time i try to listen to a song from a cd. these songs all have the .m4a file extension. what can i do to fix this?

Here is my 'tech/test report' for the day:
I plugged in the iPod to my work computer, same as yesterday. No songs in library, etc, etc.
Using the iPod as the song file source, and playing the songs using iTunes as the controlling interface, this thing played all day, hour after hour, with no resets, no issues of any type.
After ejecting the iPod and playing it on the way home, I was able to get approximately one (1) hour of play time before the iPod went into the 'AUTO-RESET' mode, by rebooting itself with no contact.
I believe we state with a high level of assurance the issue is neither MECHANICAL (i.e. a bad or tempermental hard-drive) or due to bad files. The iPod did what it was supposed to do for hours when using an external (i.e. Workstation) user interface (iTunes). Although possible, I still doubt the RESET issue stems from a battery/power triggered event.
I tend to believe the issue lies somewhere within the UI or OS on the unit itself. Perhaps some memory cache that fails to clear and eventually fills and forces a reset?
    Still searching for THE solution...
Ps: I WILL NOT BE UPGRADING TO 1.1.1 ... those issues look REALLY UGLY!!! Atleast I still get to listen to SOME songs before it bites the dust!

  • ITunes keeps resetting itself

I got my Sony VAIO laptop just before christmas and downloaded itunes from this website onto it. But every few days it resets itself and all my music, playlists and the genius sidebar disappear. To fix it I just drag and drop all the stuff in the itunes music folder back into itunes, but it's very frustrating and I shouldn't have to do it. I never experienced this with my home computer which also operates on vista. Has anyone experienced this and is there a way to fix it?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Since you don't have a backup, my first suggestion is to get an external Firewire hard drive and Prosoft Data Rescue.
It may be able to recover the information.
If you think you might have moved the User folder, or one of its subfolders by mistake, or named it something different, there is this article which can help:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107854
Though if your Applications are gone, I'm not sure that it will. Still take a look and see if that's what your issue is.

  • My Iphone 4 recently reset itself to factory mode and I lost everything. I managed to get most of my music back but I was wondering if there was a way to credit money that I spent on itunes cards for things in the games I purchased?

My iphone 4 recently reset itself to factory settings and I lost everything...contacts, pictures, itunes, apps. I managed ON MY OWN thanks to NO HELP from apple to figure out how to restore most of my apps and some of my ITUNES music. However I lost all of my games standings and that was a lot of money that I spent on upgrading games and such and quite a few of my songs. Is there away to research what i purchased and maybe get credited or something?
