ITunes id3 Issue

Long story short, I just got a new macbook because my old mbp broke and I installed a 500gb hd so that I could store all my music on it (previously, my library was too big for the mbp hd so I kept my music on an external).
Anyway, I put all of my music in iTunes and somehow discovered that some 300+ of them were listed under unknown artist / unknown album. Previously, I had nothing listed there and meticulously gone through the id3s many times. I opened up the folder and found the songs sitting there - I deleted them from iTunes and tried readding them, but they again appear with no id3 information except the name of the track (identical to the file name - not as I had had them).
Quite annoying. However, when I looked at the files individually, I just did a quick look preview of them and it listed the id3 information (such as album and artist), so it's obviously there, but for some reason iTunes isn't recognizing it.
Any thoughts?

  • My new iPod Classic will not sync with my new Mac Book. My iPhone 5 does, so does 2nd gen. iPod touch. Apple Store cannot figure it out. Tried different Classics on different Macs, same thing. iTunes update issue ?

The iPod Classic I bought a month ago is not synching with my new Mac Book I bought 3 weeks ago. All the software was immediately updated. My iPhone 5 synchs fine, and so does my 2nd generaton iPod Touch. The original computer I synched all of these devices on was my HP latop. I bought my Mac and Classic to the Apple Store for a 'Genius Appt' and they could not figure out what the problem is. The connected my Classic to another computer and the same thing happens. It says device is not recognized. They also took other iPod Classics and connected them to my Mac and other Macs. The same thing was happening. They took notes and said it probably is an iTunes update issue.
I can manually drag songs into my Classic but I lost all playlists because it cannot be backed up as well and they had to restore it. For now I am holding on to it but it's usless to me if I cannot use it the way I liked too. I used it for the gym and bike riding and my last iPod battery died after 6 years. A charge would last 45 miutes. I love the Classic for what I use it for but it's a $275 brick to me now. At least the renewed by receipt so I can get a full refund.
Is anyone else seeing this issue ? The Apple Store employee said he saw a first generation iPad havng the same issue. As of now the Support Dest is unaware of this. As much as I love my new Mac I am disappointed I cannot sync my new Classic to it. Total bummer.
    Any help would be apprecated.

By the way, I totally restored everything. It was ok. It starts to 'unrecognize' my iPod Classic when it comes to synching with iPhoto. After this happened all the menus disappeared from my iPod (music, Podcasts, movies synched fine). It seems to be a problem when synching with iPhoto. It was the same thing before.

  • IPad and iTunes Capacity Issue/Application Install Issue

I've just spent the past hour trying to figure out why iTunes 10 is reporting I have 17.9GB of video although the iPad itself is saying I have 0 videos.
I am not syncing any music videos, movies, TV shows, Podcasts or content from iTunes U.
The iPad Free Space indicator is reporting I have 8.9GB avail, but counting video as using 17.9GB of my iPad's total capacity.
    Anyone else?
I'm also trying to add Photogene to my iPad via iTunes and keep getting an error message indicating I need a newer version of iPad software to install, although I do have the most recent version. Seems like iTunes 10 issues.

There seems to be some reports that iTunes is reporting the wrong numbers for the free space, thought that's not happening to me (as best as I can tell) on my iPhone and iPad.
As for Photogene, my guess is that you're trying to install the iPhone version on your iPad. The iPhone version only works on iOS 4.0, so can't be installed on the iPad. There is an iPad version, but you have to buy it separately.

mine synched automatically, and i had no problem ejecting it or anything.
no error messages either. and all my music is now on my iPod!

  • IPhone-iTunes Syncing Issues  (3G Phone w/ 2.2 Firmware & iTunes 9.0.1)

Please feel free to inform me if this inquiry might be better posted in a different section of the discussion forums.
    *iPhone-iTunes Syncing Issues*
(3G Phone w/ 2.2 Firmware & iTunes 9.0.1.8 running on a Dell PC w/ Windows XP Pro Operating System)
With the newest 9.0.1 version of iTunes...
When you synch your Windows XP Pro PC with your iPhone (3G) device & instruct the software to synchronize your iPhone Safari "Bookmarks" with your PC's Internet Explorer "Favorites," should there not be a bi-directional transfer of the information?
(from iPhone to PC and also from PC to iPhone?)
I synched my phone yesterday & it appears that there was a successful transfer of Internet Explorer "Favorites" into the iPhone. However, neither were my iPhone Safari "Bookmarks" retained on the iPhone nor were they transferred over to the PC (& into Internet Explorer).
Do I need to also install Safari on the PC to get a successful bi-directional transfer? OR am I simply not looking in the correct place on the computer to retrieve all the Bookmarks that were apparently removed from the iPhone?
Furthermore, I've been experiencing difficulty with getting PodCasts that are already sitting in my iTunes account to transfer over to the iPhone 3G.
When I launch the synch operation, commonly the iTunes progress meter will seemingly go to completion. However, the iPhone will ultimately disappear from the left-side iTunes windowpane & the actual iPhone screen will continue to state: "Sync in Progress." The iPhone will remain in this state for HOURS & HOURS, until I ultimately slide the button to cancel the operation. I have literally left the iPhone connected to the synch computer while the iPhone's "Sync in Progress" status message remained the same for *17+ HOURS. This can not be normal*.
    Any insight would be helpful.

Note: I resolved the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling itunes with this procedure;-)

click on the store tab on the top left of iTunes.  Scroll to where it says "Authorize this computer...".  Click on that and enter your apple id and password then click authorize.  The reason iTunes says that your computer needs to be authorized is because it is to be sure that iTunes knows can trust your new computer

  • ITunes/AppleTV issues

    Hello,
I'm trying to play iTunes music from my iMac on my Apple TV.
The iMac is running OSX 10.6.8 (Intel core 2 duo)
I have just upgraded iTunes, believing this to be required in order to connect with AppleTV. Since the upgrade, I am unable to open iTunes on the iMac. I icon bobs three times and nothing happens.
Figured that perhaps the OS needs updating, but unable to download Yosemite either.
Not sure what my next step should be. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi BrianMktg,
Oh man, that definitely sounds frustrating! Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like iTunes is no longer responding/opening on your iMac. Let’s see if we can troubleshoot this issue before moving on to the AirPlay issue. To begin, you can attempt the steps in the following resources:

  • HT203433 My purchased section is not recognizing an album I purchased on my iPhone 2 days ago. iTunes 11 issue?

My purchased section is not recognizing an album I purchased on my iPhone 2 days ago. iTunes 11 issue? My phone shows the purchase but iTunes does not see it. I have gone to Store: Check for Available Downloads. Nothing. I would love to listen to this album on my iMac today, not my phone.

By purchased section do you mean the section for re-downloading via the iTunes store homepage, or the purchased section of your library ? I think that the purchased section of your library only shows purchases made on that computer, so it may necessarily show there, it may just be under Music if you've copied it over from your phone.
If you mean the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage then does any of your music purchases show there (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) ? If no music shows there then you should be able to copy it over from your phone to the music part of your library via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. If other music purchases show there then you are signed in with the same account as you purchased it with, it's still in the store, and it's not hidden (hiding and unhiding) ?
If you are in a country where music can be re-downloaded then you can turn on automatic downloads via the Store tab in iTunes > Preferences (command-comma) so that new purchases on your phone automatically download on your Mac

  • How can I resolve iPod Touch 4th gen charging and iTunes connection issue?

I have an iPod Touch 4th generation and the other day it stopped charging.  When I pug it in, it appears to be receiving a minimal charge to keep it alive, but isn't restoring the battery life and doesn't show that the battery is accepting the charge.  After plugging it in for a day, the battery was only partially charged to approximately 20%.  I've tried several USB cables and different plug-ins to no avail.
Then I tried to connect it to the computer and iTunes doesn't recognize it.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Apple Device Manager and iTunes software, and resetting the iPod.  I've also tried holding the sleep and home buttons at the same time while connecting the iPod to the computer with iTunes software open.  Nothing seems to work.  I have other iPods/iPhones that connect to iTunes without issue, so it is isolated event with this iPod Touch.  I was hoping to restore the iPod to its original settings to see if that would do the trick, but am unable to figure out how without iTunes.  Any suggestions?  help!

    Not Charge
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • OSS 3D caused iTunes burning issues

A bit of information for those that have iTunes burning issues.
I installed OSS 3D v 1.62, a sound enhancer programme for iTunes on 14/08/06 and started having CD burning issues... iTunes wouldn't burn beyond 2 tracks and then froze before "finishing".
On uninstalling OSS 3D today 19/08/06, the iTunes problem I encountered were fixed.
If you have issues re burning check recently installed software.

  • Resolution to iTunes Burn ID3 issue

Here is one resolution to not getting the ID3 tags when burning in iTunes
Go to edit>preferences>advanced>burning> if the audio CD is checked then your CD will not have the ID3 tags. But it will play in all or most CD players.
To get the ID3 tages you must have Data CD/DVD checked. If the music is bought @ iTunes music store and you give this disk to someone else or put it on one of your other computers you can transfer the music to your iTunes and it will have all the ID3 tags but you will have to autorize that computer to be able to play that music. You can have 3 or 5 computers authorized under your name. This is one of the ways to do it if you are backing up your iTunes.
If you have MP3 checked you will also have the ID3 tags and I am assuming this will take care of the problems people are having using iTunes burned CD in their CD Players that display ID3 Tag info
Hopefully this helps with some of the ID3 tag issues while burning in iTunes.
    Jack

It overwrites the Artist too, it seems.
Do you know how it is setting the "Podcast is true" setting, and how I can disable that??
This is all very confusing and annoying. iTunes 4.9 didn't do much of this, and it was a better podcast client in my mind. iTunes 5.0 making me consider switching to another podcast client so I can have one that makes sense.

  • Itunes, ID3 tags, & hard drive corruption

My wife is having a strange problem with her iMac, and it’s got me a bit mystified. I’m hoping someone here can shed some light on what might be going on. I apologize in advance for the long post.
The problem is that when she plays some songs in iTunes, and entirely different (wrong) song plays instead. Most songs play fine, but some just play entirely different songs (or sections of a song or podcast). All of the tracks are MP3 (either 192 kbps or 256 kbps) and almost all of them were encoded using Windows Media Player on an XP machine. Initially, I copied the music over from an NTFS drive to a newly formatted (Mac OS/HFS+) drive on the Mac, then I ran iTunes and created the library. At that point, everything seemed fine. All the meta data (song title, album title, artist, album artist, genre, album art) showed up in iTunes, and everything played correctly.
Now we’re getting this weird behavior where we play some songs and get the wrong music. At first I thought the iTunes library files (ITL and/or XML) had been corrupted, but it seems on closer inspection that the entire hard drive has been corrupted. When I look at the files on Mac hard drive via the Finder, all seems ok – the directory structure is intact, the file names and sizes are all correct, and a Get Info on any MP3 file shows that the ID3 data is all there and seems accurate. This is true even for the songs that play wrong, but if I play one of those songs using the little mini player in the Get Info dialog, the wrong song plays (the same wrong song as in iTunes). So now I’m getting the behavior straight off the drive, with iTunes closed and the iTunes library completely out of the equation.
    Some other interesting clues/evidence:
    * This has happened before. When her first hard drive got corrupted (in the same way), I was mystified but chalked it up as a bad hard drive and got her a new one. Then we started over with a clean HFS+ formatted drive and clean music files and built a new iTunes library. And now the same thing has happened again. So I don’t think it’s just a bad hard drive.
    * It seems to be progressive. That is, everything was fine in the beginning, but over time more and more files get messed up. We know this because we have a backup that’s about a month old on which we can locate files that are fine (on the backup) but that are messed up on her connected day-to-day drive. So it seems like some activity on the drive is causing problems that are growing over time.
    * There is some weird meta data (ID3) behavior. I copied a few hundred MP3 files from the Mac drive back to the PC (over our home network) and looked at them in the Windows Explorer. The first thing I saw was that the same (wrong) music played for the bad tracks as had on the Mac. And I also saw that a lot of ID3 tags were not showing on the Windows side. Lots of tracks have no ID3 data (album, artist, genre, etc. is missing) when I look at them on the PC. There are many albums where tags show up correctly for some of the tracks but not for others. In fact, the number of files where the ID3 tags aren’t visible on the PC far exceeds the number of songs that play incorrectly on the Mac. When I look back on the Mac at the songs that have no ID3 data on the PC and do a Get Info, I see the ID3 data.
    * Often, though I can’t say always for sure, the wrong music that plays on the Mac is stuff that has been recently added. Either podcasts or music that my wife has added since the initial library was established.
My best guess (though still full of holes):
Something is confusing the Mac OS into writing on top of occupied space on the hard drive or into mapping files incorrectly in the drive’s allocation table, and chaos results. The Mac doesn’t think anything is wrong, and it shows everything as being clean in the Finder. So I started thinking about the kind of reads & writes my wife is doing on that drive. She rips new CDs to add to the library, she downloads new Podcasts and deletes old ones, and she changes ID3 tags.
I’m focusing on the changing ID3 tag activity. My wife doesn’t like the way I tag genre. I like big broad categories, an she likes smaller, more specific categories. So she has gone through the initial library of 42K+ songs and changed the genre on thousands of songs. She’s change some from Pop to Power Pop or from Pop to Indie Pop or from Rock to Indie Rock, etc. Both WMP (where the tags were created) and iTunes support ID3v2.3, and so these two programs ought to be able to change tags in a totally interchangeable and safe way. But what if iTunes writes its new genre tags in a way that’s slightly different from WMP? Could iTunes be writing to memory/disk locations that are outside the boundaries of the file and thus creating some kind of buffer overrun?
It really doesn’t make a lot of sense, but it does tie back to the evidence that this has something to do with meta data, gets worse over time, happened on more than one disk, and seems to be a file allocation table issue.
Even if I get to the bottom of this, I think my wife’s HD is toast for sure. Here’s what I think I will do: I’ll reformat the drive, re-copy the music over from the PC, and build a new iTunes library. Then, first thing, I’ll open iTunes, select all the songs in the new library, and run “Convert ID3 Tags” to ID3v2.4. If that works and everything behaves correctly, I’ll try to change some genre tags and test the results. The problem is that the library is so large that problems can go undetected for a long time, so maybe I should do this first with a small subset of the music as a trial run.
The thing I want to avoid is having to do this (ever) again, so I’d feel more comfortable if I understood the bug/problem before just following this guess (which feels like a roll of the dice). If anyone has seem similar behavior or has heard of any IDS incompatibilities between WMP 11 and iTunes 7, I’d love to hear about it. Any help is appreciated.
    Jim

Wow, that was a long and detailed post. I haven't the energy to reply in equal fervor, but I will just say that lately these boards have been peppered with posts from people whose MP3s are being eaten alive by iTunes. What I don't get is why you suspect the hard drive is at fault. Unless the rest of the system is caving in, I don't think there's any reason to suspect a failing drive. Check the S.M.A.R.T. status in Disk Utility if you haven't already, and perform whatever maintenance you believe is in order.
For the most reliable ID3 tag editing, I'd certainly recommend using foobar2000 on a Windows PC (or a Mac with Windows installed) or MP3Tag. I would definitely, at least for the time being, not put your huge music collection at risk by doing any further editing of the tags in iTunes.
