ITunes in Time Capsule.

Is it possible to store all my music in time capsule and use the itunes in TC to create playlists that i can later sync with all my devices?
I dont want to store music files in my MB Air, i just want to sync playlists which I created in TC to my MB Air.
Same with Pictures.
Thanks for your help!

Possible yes..
Highly not advisable..
There is zero backup in the TC.. when it crashes.. which it will one day.. it will take all your items.
TC is a backup device not a NAS.

can i store or back up my itunes on Time capsule?

You can store your itunes on the TC but you should not.
The Time Capsule has no easy backup method. It is a backup device.. not a NAS.
If the itunes is on a computer connected to the TC and running Time Machine the itunes will be backed up. is this what you mean? You can also make a copy of the itunes but not use it as a main store.

  • The HD was recently changed on my MacBook Pro and I lost my iTunes library (Time Capsule also died!) but have all my songs on my iPhone.  How can I copy them to my laptop?

The HD was recently changed on my MacBook Pro and I lost my iTunes library (Time Capsule died also!) but all my songs are still on my iPhone4.  How can I copy them back to my laptop? Tks

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss.  Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • Can no longer access songs on iTunes on Time Capsule

Not sure what's gone wrong here. A month ago, I moved my whole iTunes library (60GB) to my Time Capsule. Have been playing all my music fine since then. Till today. Suddenly, everything's gone haywire. Only a random fraction of the songs and podcasts now appear in the iTunes screen. The whole library is still there on the Time Capsule; it's just inaccessible.
I have tried to reconnect to the library several times by restarting iTunes and holding down Option. It seems to connect but I'm still only have a few songs.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

No, the Time Capsule is a long way from full. I have the 3TB version and am barely using 500 GB.
I also have the iTunes library backed up to a Lacie hard-drive just in case.
So no worries at all about losing songs.
My worry is about how to play the songs I actually have!

  • ITunes From Time Capsule to WiFi enabled HiFi.

TC 2TB - I have a new 2TB time capsule and wish to set it up to act as a WiFi sreamer for my iTunes library currently on my Imac. I have Twonky software on the iMac and this works well streaming my music to my WiFi enabled music system but I would prefer not to have to have the iMac switched on all the time to stream music. Can I use the Time Capsule and if so how? I am not a computer whizz so any help appreciated. pickle 6

There are no media players in the TC nor even a way to hack it in. The TC is a dumb file store.. to play itunes on your hifi without the Mac turned on, you need a player plus itunes moved to the TC which is really not advised. Don't do it this way. You would be better with  a cheap ipod and a dock for it. Otherwise you need the imac turned on.

  • ITunes on Time Capsule : having trouble finding track files

I recently coupled up my Mac Mini to a Time Capsule with the intent of using the TC as my iTunes music server. This has been documented in several threads here already, but this is what I did:
    1. Copied my entire iTunes music folder (i.e. all the MP3s) onto a subdirectory of my TC called Music.
    2. Started iTunes for the first time on my Mac Mini and created a new library (I don't care about my meta data at the moment)
    3. In the Advanced Settings I set my music folder to point at the TC's :Music folder.
    4. Unchecked the appropriate boxes so that iTunes is prevented from copying or reorganising my music library.
    5. Used the "Add Folder..." menu item to import all the music into the iTunes library.
Here's the problem: When I browse through the track list each track has a little exclamation icon next to it. This usually indicates that the file cannot be located. If I select the file and hit the Play button nothing happens (as you would expect). If I open up the track properties it states that the file cannot be found (again, as one would expect). However, if I double click on the track it suddenly starts playing and the exclation icon dissappears! So the file has magically been found....
Now I don't want to have to go through my entire library double clicking each file one at a time otherwise I'll be here until the end of eternity. Does anyone know what has gone wrong here, or know how this can be remedied?

I have experienced the pointer problem during the learning phase of connecting my network to TC. I think it much more important to get the network (interference and dropouts, preference user wants and speed) right first then deal with the relationship of itunes to TC.
Any kind of change I made to the TC within the network produced the pointer problem. Example, I had everything set so I changed the multi cast rate and the pointer problem surfaced, changing the wireless name caused it and changing the TC name also.
Since then I've settled into no change of any kind once I got my network the way I wanted and currently no pointer problems.

  • Mac itunes with time capsule

I have all of a sudden having problems with my imac and itunes. I connect itunes to my time capsule over wireless. It all worked well until now when I try and get itunes to play a song it tells me its not there and yet if I manually search for it I can see it and play it. My itunes library is showing 'time capsule' so at present I am at a loss as to what the problem is.

    Hello AnniB,
I think you may have misspoke as there is no animal as a Apple Express. However the AirPort Express and Apple TV, both stream from another system on your network. (the A TV stores a bit of that but doesn't act as a server).
The AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule and Mac Mini will all let you hook up your portable drive (via USB). The Mac Mini bonus is that you can add a 3rd party tuner and have it function similar to a Windows MediaCenter unit. Buying any 2 of these Apple products will be adding 2 wireless access points and possible confusion. If you would like a nice looking solution there are 3rd party external HDs that have the same shape and footprint as the Mac Mini and I believe the slightly larger AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.
If your just looking for central storage and don't need the processor, the 500GB Time Capsule should work out to give you more bang for the buck than going with an AirPort Extreme and an additional external HD, (plus look cleaner and one less power power cord).
    Hope this helps,
    JD

  • Using itunes with time capsule

I am looking for step by step instructions to set up iTunes to work with time capsule. I would like to use time capsule to store and share music over my wireless network.

You just need to set the iTunes music folder location to a folder on the time capsule, then any content you add to iTunes will be stored there. You can find this at iTunes Preferences > advanced.

  • Itunes and Time Capsule

I'm trying to transfer my library to my time capsule so I can access the music from both my MacBookAir and my MacBook Pro. However, when I follow the directions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449, I never see all my music in the library on my MacBookAir. All I see is my "purchased" music on the Air even though the preferences are pointing towards the music folder on my time capsule. Help!?!

i assume the library is currently on the MBP. copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on your MBP to the TC's drive, then launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder on the external.
note only one iTunes at a time can access the library.

  • How do I host iTunes on Time Capsule

Just moved from a Linksys wireless router to a Time Capsule.  Was previously doing iTunes "Home Sharing" on a Windows based NAS (Network Attached Storage) device.
Would now like to migrate or copy iTunes library from NAS device to Time Capsule.  Are there any pointers / instructions out there for how to do this?

if your entire iTunes folder is on the NAS
copy it from the NAS to the TC. when done, launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library at the prompt, and select the iTunes folder you copied to the TC.
next, go iTunes > preferences > advanced and change iTunes media folder location to the TC so that all future additions to your library are put there.
if only your media files are on the NAS
go iTunes > preferences > advanced and change iTunes media folder location to the TC
on the same tab, ensure the copy files ... when adding option is enabled
    ok out of preferences
go iTunes > file > library > organize library and checkmark consolidate library
    wait for it to finish
be aware that you can not use time machine to back up the content stored on the TC. you will have to find other means to back up your precious library. equally, if you encounter problems with the TC, it will be very difficult to retrieve the data from it's drive.
if i where you, i'd leave my library on the NAS - in fact, i recently moved my library from directly attached firewire drives to a Synology DS411j NAS.
alternatively, consider using a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port. that way, you could periodically connect the USB drive to your computer and use e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner to back it up to yet another external.

  • Setting up itunes on time capsule

How do I move the itunes folder to my time capsule? Music and photos currently exist on an old laptop that I am getting rid of. I want to move music and photos to the time capsule to access from my devices.
I have done a back up to time capsule but you cant access the individual folders in that format.
    Thanks,
    Rich

Yes, you can plug USB drive to the TC.. that is very very slow..
You can put the files there.
You cannot access itunes on a TC without a computer running..
iPad cannot access an iTunes library without itunes running. TC is not a media server.
iphone and appletv same thing.. they cannot stream files from a TC without a computer.
Apple have instructions on using itunes shared in a home network.
There is no such thing as itunes server. But it is effectively taking that role.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2688
So a TC is not able to be itunes server.
The iphoto library is shared via itunes.. but all of the libraries should be connected by fastest drive you can afford.. USB2 is worst, but is still faster than a TC over a network, USB3 is cheap and excellent speed but only latest Macs use it.. Thunderbolt is the best but  uber expensive.. FW800 is still a good standard except avoid WD version of FW .. it should be about double the speed of USB2.. WD stuff is the same as USB2 at least on the read side.. Plug the drive directly to the computer.. Or use a large internal drive of course.. but Macs tend to not be easy to change drives.

  • IPhone sync to iTunes on Time Capsule

I have seen many threads about switching your iPhone over to a new computer - but I am asking something a little different.
I currently sync my iPhone with my laptop - with iTunes stored on a Time Capsule wireless drive.
I also have a Mac pro which uses the same library on that wireless drive.
I want to switch the sync computer from laptop to desktop. Can I copy some file stored deep in OSX to the desktop and have the iphone be recognized on this new computer without all the hassle of restore/reboot etc?
I am assuming that I will need to copy all photos and contacts etc to the desktop beforehand as well.
    Thanks.

Hello again....I had a couple of questions for you:
    1. Is there any other way for me to save my contacts or address book before restoring?
    2. Also I looked at the instructions for restoring my iphone, and it looks like the phone needs to still connect to the computer, and mine does not.... The little rainbow beach ball just spins & spins & spins when I plug my phone in & never shows as connected.
    Thank you

  • ITunes on Time Capsule

I followed these directions (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449) to move my iTunes data to my Time Capsule (TC) from my old macbook. I also have a new macbook pro and I am unsure how to point this new macbook to the iTunes data on the TC.

    iTunes prefs > Advanced.
Set the *iTunes media folder location* to the *iTunes media folder* on the Time Machine.
File > Add to library and select the *iTunes media folder* on the Time Machine.

  • ITunes on Time Capsule - Front Row

    Hi,
I have recently moved my songs to a Time Capsule which I play wirelessly through iTunes on my MacBook. I have just tried to get play the songs via Front Row but it is not bringing up any songs/playlists etc.
Is there anywhere I can point Front Row to the Time Capsule.
    Thanks in advance,
    Louise

Well, I've never done that myself, so I'm probably not the best person for iTunes instructions. I was only speaking for the functionality of Front Row. Others here have been able to host their iTunes library on a shared/network drive and still run Front Row. You might want to search/post in the iTunes forum.

  • ITunes Backup Time Capsule

I just recently bought a Time Capsule and have been able to backup all my files, photos and music. The majority of my music is on an external hard drive that appears to have been transferred but I still have to keep my external HD plugged in the USB to playback my music. Can someone help me and tell what I am doing wrong? The main reason for buying the TC is to get rid of my external HD. I am not the most savy computer guy so I apologize for asking what may seem to be a silly questions. Thanks!

It depends on what your goal is for the TC and your external harddrive.
You are correct in thinking the TC will replace the external drive for backup purposes however the TC is not designed to be a replacement for temporary storage.
That being said I use the TC for a few unintended purposes. I do store files for network transfer from one machine to another and it works perfectly. I also run two iTunes libraries solely off of the TC which is not entirely recommended. There are a few issues. You can stream music wirelessly fine with two computers streaming at the same time and even one streaming video while another streams music. I have however run into issues when someone is streaming music and another person is writing files to their iTunes library. Even to the extent of it killing my wireless signal all together and having to unplug the TC to return to a working state.
If you could clarify your goal in using the time capsule then I might be able to help you a little more based on my experiences. Also of note is that you can connect your USB drive to the time capsule instead of your computer so you don't have to continually reconnect it all the time.
