ITunes Inaccurate Play Counts

Hey guys-
I've been having a lot of trouble syncing my music library to my new 128GB iPhone 6. One of the latest problems is that after syncing (normally unsuccessfully), my  device syncs ridiculously high play counts to my iTunes library.
For example, I added a new song to my library on 10/09/14 and only played it once in my car. When I synced my iPhone this morning, the song had 28 plays. I know for a fact that this song only played once in total. About 30 songs have had their play counts dramatically inflated (25-60 plays).
I rely heavily on play counts for smart playlists and ratings. Now I have about 30 songs with play counts higher than some of my favorite songs which were added years ago. I assign ratings based on plays too so suddenly songs I added over the week were now 5 star songs with only 1-5 legitimate plays.
Any idea what is causing this?? It's threatening the integrity of my entire iTunes library.. Please help!!
MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
iTunes 11.4 (18) (64 bit)
iPhone 6, 128GB (iOS 8.0.2; 12A405)

I have the same problem like you. iMac with Yosemite and iPhone 6. A song, added 2 months ago has 205 counts. Other songs I have for years ago have only 80 counts. And there are other songs, where the same thing is happening. And its starts mixing up everything at my library -.-
Today I talked to Apple Care at the phone. He never heard of that problem. And talked with a colleague. Result: Nothing. He can not promise, that a future update either of Yosemite (e.g.10.10.1) or iTunes will solve the problem.
He talked about editing the itunes library.xml document. However, I have to do this on my own because Apple doesn't provide this solution. And if that helps: Nobody knows. Since I am not an expert, i can't do that.
Other options: A new library or reseting al counters.
All in all: No solution that helps.
I may start reseting some of the counters that are most crazy, and hope for an effective update. (Sorry for potential english mistakes )

  • ITunes resets play count to "1" after syncing

Hi, recently I've noticed that after syncing my iPod the play count for the tracks I've played that day are showing as 1 even though many of them have been played a lot more than that (some in the 100s). This has only been only happening since I upgraded my software to iTunes 10.2.2 and is very frustrating as I find the play count info very useful.
Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Chris

When your ipod is plugged into your itune click on it in itune and uncheck sync at the bottom of the page.

  • ITunes 12 play counts not updating

So... my home Mac hosts my main iTunes library and was on the last version iTunes 11.  I connect to it from my Windows laptop in my office, with the Home Sharing setting to update play counts and dates turned on (I need this for certain playlists to work).  My Windows machine was also on the latest 11.xx version.  After upgrading the Windows machine to iTunes 12.01, this feature stopped working.  I can play music from my main iTunes library on my laptop just fine, but they don't get updated with the last play date and count on the main library - like it did earlier this morning.
I then upgraded iTunes on my Mac that hosts the iTunes library and it's now on 12.01 as well - but the problem is still there.
Anyone else have this issue?  This isn't the first time I've had an iTunes upgrade break this feature.
Is it ever safe to apply an upgrade to iTunes without worrying about a key feature not working any more?

This again happened to me for a couple of week and all of a sudden my phone decided to go through the 'Trust This Computer' question... and once I clicked 'Yes' it started to remember my last played song.
So... that may be the issue - you, somehow, need to go through that 'Trust This Computer' cycle.  Not sure how to force it to do so but someone / somewhere in this discussion board must have the answer

  • ITunes doubling play counts after being listened to on iPhone 5

I just synced my phone to my iTunes after playing an album only once on my iPhone 5 and I noticed that my iTunes play count is showing that each song has actually been listened to twice. Same goes for a song that I played four times, the play count says that it was played eight times. Is this a new glitch/is there a way to fix this? I rely heavily on my play count numbers for playlists and sorting my music. Any help?

See this page - Itunes playcount too high
Looks like a few people are having the issue aswell.
It appears that the iPhone and iTunes are holding two seperate play counters. Whenever you sync the phone, the play count on the phone should reset everything to zero. What is actually happening is that the iPhones play count and iTunes play count are adding together these numbers - hence the large increase in play count.
So, if you listen to a song once and then sync the phone - play count will be 1. If you then do the same - it jumps up to 3. Again, playing the song again - will increase the count to 5.
I've had this issue ever since iOS 8 and a few of my songs in iTunes have over 1300 plays... Fairly sure I didn't leave the song on repeat and let it play for 5 days straight...

  • ITunes LP Play Count

I got my first iTunes LP and there's something I can't figure out. The LP item always seems to have a play count of 0 and I can't find a way to get iTunes to consider it "played." I use a smart playlist to keep track of new items in my Library and it's stuck there until I can get the play count over 0.

I had this exact same question this morning, for the exact same reason, and Google turned up your question and a solution on http://www.smartplaylists.com/ -- add “Kind” does not contain “iTunes LP” to your smart playlist criteria and the LP items won't show up. Of course, this means they'll never show up in your new items playlist, so could be a downside if you'd like to see them at least once, in order to easily "file" them into another playlist.

  • New iTunes zeroing Play counts?

Immediately after I installed the new iTunes, I noticed that the play counts on about 3% of my music library had been reset to zero. There was apparently no rhyme nor reason - new songs, old songs, different genres. I informed Apple through the `feedback on iTunes' menu item, and studiously set about trying to adust those play counts manually, to better reflect how often I had listened to the 700+ songs involved.
Imagine my dismay when I realized in the last day or two that this was not a one time occurrence! That is, the number of songs with a zero play count has increased by 50 per cent in three or four days, to over 1000 songs. Needless to say, I will quit trying to recreate play counts, as it is clearly a losing battle. Count me as another dissatisfied customer of this iTunes update.
If this is also a problem for you, would you please notify Apple officially? That way, maybe they will fix this problem in the hoped-for fixed version of iTunes. Thank you.

  • Media Go - iTunes Data (Play count, ratings) Import

    Hello,
I'm trying to import all my ratings/play count data from my music and podcasts in iTunes to Media Go. So, for example, my 'most played music' in iTunes. For now, I only know how to import a playlist. When I do this, I lose the play count/rating data.
Is there any way to do this? I understand there is two options for connecting to iTunes - 'monitor' the iTunes folders (which I have just done, and my data does not import) or to fully import all iTunes files (which also does not seem to import data).
    Thanks

Sam, thanks for your help. It's a shame but at least I know for sure! I have been thinking about this and have some ideas to help fix this:
    1. 'Static' playlists can be imported. This is a playlist where the contents doesn't change. For example, you have a playlist based on the soundtrack of a favourite film. You simply right click on that playlist in itunes and click export, or you drag and drop it into Media Go.
    2. Ratings - I have an idea. Make playlists in iTunes with '1 star songs' '2 star songs' etc. I do this for all 5 star ratings. Now use the above method to export to drag these playlists into Media Go. When you view these songs/podcasts/other content in Media Go, highlight them all either with your mouse or by pressing CTRL+A. When you have all items selected in a playlist, edit the details and add the particular rating. So, for example I have 5 star podcasts or 5 star songs. I drag them into Media Go, highlight them in Media Go, change the details in Media Go to 5 star again and it should be complete. You may wish to to create a view in Media Go with your 5 star items, this is similar to iTunes 'Smart playlists', meaning, as you add more ratings to your songs or podcasts, they are added automatically to this View.
    3. Maintaining play count. The best I can recommend to others is to drag your playlists into Media Go, for example I have 'Favourite songs' or 'Most played new music'. When you drag them into Media Go, they will not maintain their rating but if you sync this playlist to your device you should be able to access your favourite music from your last device e.g. iPod quickly. With some normal usage, you will regenerate your favourite lists. You may wish to add a new View such as 'Most Played music', as I say, the Views add content over time like iTunes smart playlists.
If anyone else has helpful ideas do add! Lets make our Xperias and Media Go our favourite devices and software!!

  • Inaccurate Play Count

Quick question - I'm sure it's been addressed before but I couldn't find an answer to my specific concern.
Simply put, all my play counts in iTunes are wrong. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to them. Some songs that I may have played 10 or 20 times show a play count of 1500! Impossible, of course. One song, for example, that I know I've only played maybe 4 times, shows a play count of 652. Just makes no sense. All these crazy numbers throughout iTunes!
    'Lil help??
    Thanks

It sounds like the database of playcount information has somehow become corrupted.
You may be stuck having to recreate your library.
You could also try this script http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=newplayedcount
It allows you to set the playcount(s) on selected tracks to any number you want. You could sort your library by playcount, select all the obviously strange entries, and set them to a more normal value.
    PS
Here's a tech note about where this info is stored: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660

  • Play count and display

Since the latest upgrade of Itunes the play count of many of my tracks has automatically reset to 0 for some unknown reason.  Also I display Track Name/Artist/Album on my Itunes and on a number of occasions they display incorrect information and when I click on Get Info for that track and click back out of it it shows the correct information (It's usually transfers over what's in the Sort Album/Title Name etc into the Album/Title Name field on the main display).  So weird!  Anyone else had this?  Hope I've explained myself clearly!

I have the same issue with my Ipod Shuffle & Itunes.
Is there a resolution to this problem?
    Thanks.

  • 3G: play count updated, but not last played

I have a 3G 10GB iPod, and since updating to iTunes 7, my stats are not syncing correctly. When I play something on my iPod and then sync the stats back to iTunes, the play count field is properly adjusted, but the last played count does not. I understand why this does not occur in the Shuffle, which lacks an internal clock, but the iPod does.
Does anyone know how to correct this problem? Everything I do is based on smart playlists, so the stats need to be correct.

Found the problem. After my iPod didn't update after purchasing new songs, I checked my iPod options. For some reason my iTunes iPod Options changed from "Automaticaly update ..." to "Manually manage ...". Once I set this back to automatic everything updated fine.
It is interesting that even when "Manually manage" was selected, a new Podcast trak was downloaded to the iPod and, after listening to it, the Last Played and Play Count fields were updated.
Also, regarding my question about the Last Played update with my Shuffle, I learned that iTunes 5 implemented a change to update this field with the current date and time once the Shuffle is re-synch'd.

  • Play Count Question

The play count on my ipod is different from the play count on my iTunes. How do I make iTunes sync play count with my iPod.
It always updated the count on my shuffle, but doesnt with my 5th gen

yes i am but i also had manual update on my shuffle and it still updated play count..
so it needs to be on auto update then?

  • TOTAL Play Count... possible?

This might be a strange question, but I am just curious. I know that when I plug my iPod into my computer and open iTunes, the play count comes up for each song. I was wondering if it is possible to get the total play count from my iPod... just a single number for the number of times I've played EVERY song. I have a "retro" iPod (iPod photo... not sure what generation) so I'm not sure if current programs would work with it, but I can try it. BTW, I have iTunes 9.2 if that matters. Thank you!

No. However, it is easy enough to paste your library into Excel or some other spreadsheet (simply make sure the columns you want are visible in iTunes, then copy and paste) from which you can do all the sums and statistics you want.

  • Help, Library corrupted, need to save ratings, play counts, and last played

Help, my iTunes lost its connection to my media server yesterday and it seems to have totally corrupted the library. I have all my music files intact, but if I recreate the library by starting afresh, I will lose 6 years worth of ratings, play counts, and last played dates. I do not want to lose this information. I have the information in an library export.
How can I add back the music and restore the metadata??

I am having this exact same issue in iTunes 11 running on OSX 10.6.8.
Short tracks (less than 10sec) do not update their metadata to increase the play count. However if I play a short track on my iPod or iPhone and then sync with iTunes the play count and last played info is updated.
This really messes up my smart playlists that use playcount limiters.
I hope there is a fix for this soon.

  • Play counts and "Last Played" not updating on short songs?

It looks like a lot of people have had trouble with play counts not updating with crossfade turned on. I've never used crossfade, so this doesn't bother me. However, I do have a plethora of very short tracks in my library (owing to there being many video game soundtracks with short fanfares as tracks), and I've noticed that when playing any song that's 10 seconds or less, it will show up in the "History" tab of "Up Next", but "Plays" and "Last Played" remain the same. Any other song in my library, whether it's 11 seconds long like "Got a Star Piece (part 1)" from "Super Mario RPG" by Yoko Shimomura or 11 minutes long like "I Am" from "As the World Bleeds" by Theocracy, will update its play count properly when played. Why is 10 seconds enough time to play a song and add it to my history, but not enough time to update when I last played it and make it appear in the smart playlist of recently played songs? Is iTunes 11 so obsessed with 11 that if a song isn't 11 seconds long, it doesn't consider it to be worth tracking?

I am having this exact same issue in iTunes 11 running on OSX 10.6.8.
Short tracks (less than 10sec) do not update their metadata to increase the play count. However if I play a short track on my iPod or iPhone and then sync with iTunes the play count and last played info is updated.

  • Play counts and last played not registered

When syncing my iPod after the past few days, I was worried when last.fm (music listening tracker for those who don't know it) told me I had no plays to sync with their server. Usually, this means that there was a handshake error with iTunes but I always double check. So I did.
When I looked, all the music from the past few days had no sign that I listened to it at all. No change in play counts, and last played match when I last listened to them on my computer (for many it's never). This is a syncing iPod that works by playlists, which prior to now had no problem syncing play counts at all but only gained this issue recently, with no changes to my settings at all since the last time this was done successfully.
    Troubleshooting?

I am having this exact same issue in iTunes 11 running on OSX 10.6.8.
Short tracks (less than 10sec) do not update their metadata to increase the play count. However if I play a short track on my iPod or iPhone and then sync with iTunes the play count and last played info is updated.
