ITunes installation crashes - what to do?

Hi there,
just downloaded the latest version from the Apple site.
Started the installer and get the following error message.
Any ideas what I can do here? It happened to the last release as well but I thought that Apple will fix it with the next release. Guess I was wrong.
Tried to uninstall iTunes and reinstall = same error
Tried to uninstall Quicktime = same error
Don't know what to do....anyone got an idea of how to handle this issue?
Cheers

  • During a error updating, I had to reinstall iTunes. When proceeding to install iTunes, the installer chooses M:// I dont have a M drive, I click change and the iTunes installer crashes. I've tried everything, help!

Seriously no idea whats going on, and I'm usually pretty good with figuring an issue
    Heres the isse:
When updating iTunes, after the restart I booted up iTunes and it crashed. I was prompted with iTunes had been updated incorrectly and to uninstall and reinstall iTunes. After downloading the installer from itunes.ca. I opened up the application, and clicked Next. Under the directory it says M Drive, I dont have an M drive at all, I click change and a prompt pops that says, "The volume M:/ is currently unavailable. Please select another." with "ok" being the only selection.
After hitting ok, it says "itunes installer completed" "Errors occured during installation before iTunes could be configured. Your system has not been modified. To complete the installation, run the installer again. Click Finish to exit the installer." Finish is the only selectable, and upon restarting the installer the same thing happens. I hope theres someone who can help me out with this.

    Hello Fix88,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with installing iTunes.  I found a couple of resources that I think will help with this.
I recommend reviewing the following articles:

When uninstalling iTunes, it is important to remove iTunes and all related components in the order listed.

  • "Invalid Drive I:\" error during iTunes installation. What do I do now?

Can't install iTunes on my pc. Keep getting "invalid Drive I:\" error.
    I have no drive I:\. I have C:, D: and P:(external drive).
I have downloaded iTunes a couple of times but none work.
I am using an HP DV6700 with windows 7.
    Help, please.

Let's try the following user tip with that one:

  • ITunes 7.7 64-bit installer crashes, won't install

I downloaded the 64-bit installer and tried to install over my 7.6 install. Part way through the installer (on the Quicktime bit I think) it crashes. I tried multiple times.
So I completely uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime and tried again. Now the iTunes installer crashes immediately rather than part way through the install (it's right after the pick install location / desktop icons screen).
Any ideas? I'm left with no iTunes whatsoever now which isn't very helpful when I need to sync my iPod.

    Hey Viper007Bond,
Try completely removing iTunes and QuickTime as described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
Then download and reinstall the latest version of iTunes.

(i'm not a subscriber, so i can't follow up their "M" links ... not that there was anything specific to the IDriver.exe anyway.)

  • When I try to upload the lates version of iTunes, it tells me to enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package iTunes.msi. What does this mean as I can't seem to find any such folder and now I cannot uninstall Itunes either

when I try to upload the latest version of iTunes, it tells me to enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package iTunes.msi. What does this mean as I can't seem to find any such folder and now I cannot uninstall Itunes either

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • What causes my iTunes to crash as soon as I open it

What causes iTunes to crash as soon as it tries to open? I never had any problems in the past. It just started happening a few days ago. I tried to reload it but it still crashes. Any suggestions?

For now and until Apple fixes the bug, the only solution I have found is to turn the proxy off in the Network settings. If you need to use a proxy server for work/school, you are best off with using Firefox. Firefox has a number of add-ons that allow you to turn the proxy on and off (for instance Switchproxy, which is very useful and allows you to turn the proxy on only selectively). Remove Safari and Trash it.
Use OnyX and run ALL the maintenance and cleaning aspects reboot.
Use OnyX Verify Preferences and write down any corrupt .plists for deletion (they will rebuild themselves after a reboot or program launch)

You asked what I meant about saving the installer on your PC.
When you go to the iTunes download page:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
And click on download, you should be offered the choice of running the installer or saving it. You need to click on save and then choose a folder on you PC where you want it saved. But I think you already did that.
After the installer file - iTunessetup.exe - is save on your computer, you double click on it to run it.
It's very odd that the installer fails at different stages. usually when the installation fails, it is at a specific stage and usually generates an error message.
I am afraid I am mystified. Have you had any other problems with your PC which might suggest a general problem not specific to iTunes?
The only other suggestion I have is to download a fresh copy of the installer - in case it got corrupted. You could also try using "run as administrator" to run the installer. It should be an option if you right click on the installer file.
The other thing it might be worth trying is to install it from another account, but you would need to create another administrator account if you don't a;ready have one. Or if you have another account that is not an admin account, you can temporarily promote it from the control panel>>User accounts.
