Itunes/Iphone dead and won't reinstall; "services" won't start

I tried to do the autoupdate to Itunes 9.2. It ran into an error. I tried to download it manually; that also ran into an error. I decided to stay on the old version to avoid making things worse. When I went to do a regular synch on my iPhone 3GS, it offered to upgrade me to iOS 4.0. I accepted. It got stuck on the iPhone "connect to Itunes" screen, displaying a USB cable and an iTunes logo.
Now without a functioning phone, I tried to follow troubleshooting instructions and go back to getting iTunes working. I uninstalled each piece of software in the required order, verified the uninstall, and tried to reinstall. The reinstall runs into errors because it can't begin certain services. If I click "ignore" to try to keep going, I end up with three error messages before the installation ultimately fails and gives me only the option to retry or cancel:
Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.
Service 'iPod Service' (iPod Service) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.
Service 'iPod Service' (iPod Service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.
I'm the only user on the computer, and nothing has changed since the last dozens of times I updated Itunes, so I assume I have whatever permission I'm supposed to.
Anyway, end result, I have no iPhone and no ITunes, and no idea what to do. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Maybe a clue: I got into the Windows "Services" area, and I see that several services including "Apple Mobile Device" and "iPod" mentioned above are "disabled." When I try to change them to "Automatic," I get an error that says the service has "been marked for deletion," which apparently means I can't enable it.
Ideas?

  • G5 dead and won't start up at all

G5 10.5.8 1.6 I usually leave it on 24/7 Shut it down the other night and now it won't start up.
Pressed the cuda, checked voltage in battery (3.597v). It has had problems in the past of colored lines on the bottom of the monitor when I put it to sleep, but when it was awake after about 15-20 minutes the lines would go away.
I did check the power outlet where it's plugged in for power and it is good.
Now I have no light on the power button and when I had the case opened there were no diode lights on inside either. Any suggestions?

If it is the original battery it couldn't hurt to replace it. To get an accurate reading you have to measure the voltage under load.
A good way to do that is, with AC disconnected, measure the +voltage in the actual battery holder+. Or place a 150 ohm resistance across the battery when reading the voltage.
That being said, this sounds a little more fundamental. When connecting AC to the machine, do you hear a click from the power supply? If not, then you may have a keeled-over power supply. Even with a dead logic board, you should at least get an attempt to power things up, resulting in a fan rush and/or a single relay click from the power supply when you push the button. If you are not getting that, then either the power supply or the front panel board is the culprit. (As an aside, I would guess power supply is more likely, but not impossible that the front panel board has caused the problem.)
Another thing is how clean is the interior? If the dust hasn't been blown out in a long time, or ever, that might be a good thing to look into as well.

  • IPhone dead and won't charge - strange dim red light

    Good morning,
I was talking with my sister last night when my IPhone phone shut off.  I assumed that my battery died so I put it on the charger.  When I went back to get my phone off the charger I noticed that it did not charge at all.  I tried doing a reset holding down the home key and the shut off key together and it still won't turn on.  I left it on the charger overnight and this morning it is still dead.  I noticed this morning in the dark that I can see a very low dim red light by the ear piece speaker at the top of the phone.
At this point, I am at a complete loss.  I have no idea what to do.  We leave on vacation tomorrow and at this point, I have no phone.  Very scary for me since we are going to Florida and my oldest daughter is going to California.  I need to be in contact with her while she is gone.    Any help and good news is much needed!
Thank you so much for taking time to read this post!
    Sincerely,
    Angela

I would say when an iPhone normally dies it when plugged in does eventually give you an icon like an empty battery indicator then later I would say it turns on with an apple. If your under warrenty or with any extended warrenty insurance. I would call Verizon and say that your phone won't turn on at all and you want a replacement . It should take a day to get or go to apple and ask to replace.

You might find this article helpful: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
It has the error range of 3000's which states
Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes.

  • My iPhone 4 is completely dead and won't charge, turn on, no signs of life!

My iPhone 4 is completely dead and won't charge, turn on, no signs of life! What to do???

Was late to work because my alarm didn't go off on my iPhone this morning! (4 w/ IOS 5)  When I woke up, I went to check my phone and it wouldn't turn on; so I plugged it in to the charger and no response.  I left it plugged in while I was getting ready...came back a shortwhile later...still no signs of life.  At that point, I held both buttons for several seconds and the apple logo appeared and the lock screen displayed shortly thereafter.  And what's odd, is that it showed that I had about 80% of battery life left.  So it seems like something else caused it to shutdown completely.  One note though...I updated to IOS 5 on Sunday...and I've used my phone ever since with no problems.  So this is the first time this has happened since the update.
In looking at a thread on another site, I found this excerpt from an alleged beta tester back in June...and it was in reference to the iPad 2 with IOS 5, but seemed plausible enough to share here:
Issue:  "Hey guys, whenever my iPad 2 is locked for a while, it wont wake from sleep.  I have to give it a hard reset.  Is anyone else having this issue?"
Response:  "I think I isolated the issue....make sure banner notifications are turned off for mail app. If the screen is locked and you get a mail it freezes up causing you to reboot. hope it gets fixed in the next beta!"
Follow-up:  "Did it help you at all? I tried recreating every way I could think of with mail and never could. I'll turn of mail notifications for the rest of the night and see what happens."
"Hey Rick, yes it helped, my iPad no longer shuts off.  I turned off mail banner notifications like Defender2010 said, and at least for now, it doesn't turn off anymore."

  • My Iphone4 went dead and won't turn back on inspite of charging it for whole night. Any idea?

My Iphone4 went dead and won't turn back on inspite of charging it for whole night. Any idea?

Try the suggestions in this Apple document -> Troubleshooting iPhone hardware
Will not turn on, or will not turn on unless connected to power
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions.   If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage.   If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check    if the Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) in the headset jack or dock connector is activated or there are signs of corrosion or debris. Learn more about LCIs.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least 15 minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has  charged for at least 20 minutes: See   "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
If something other than the Home screen or Low Battery screen appears on the display, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, try resetting it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter. To reset, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until either the Apple logo or the battery symbol appears.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Restore the iPhone.   Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
If that doesn't work, have a Genius take a look at it.

My iPod is dead and won't charge or connect to the computer. How can I fix this? Before it died, it said I had a full battery whenever I charged it, but as soon as it came off of the charger, the battery level was always under ten per cent.

Sounds like the battery needs to be replaced.

  • Imac dead and won't turn on after lightning storm

Lightning fried my mac; its dead and won't turn on, in spite of having a surge protector; my question is what part is likely damaged; and what does a repair cost without Apple Care.?
    Thanks

    Hi rasperryaddiction!
I was wondering if you've tried resetting the SMC (support.apple.com/kb/HT3964). It's very simple to try before considering having the computer repaired. If it really doesn't turn on after resetting the SMC, then contact any Apple Authorized Service Provider or and Apple store near you.  Tell them what happened to check if they can give you a quote or something buy, they might ask you to bring it in to confirm the issue. It really does depend on which part was affected.

  • If I have both my iPhone and my iPad set up on the Find iPhone App, and I disable location services on my iPhone, will I still be able to track my iPad on this app?

If I have both my iPhone and my iPad set up on the "Find iPhone" app, and I disable location services on my iPhone, will I still be able to track my iPad from my iPhone by using this app?

iWork is universal, so it will work full-res on the iPad. This is true for any app which has the plus sign symbol (in the App Store in iTunes it will say "This app is designed for iPhone and iPad".

    Thank you!

Well, I hadn't rebooted after the 7.1.1 upgrade, but obviously I had to restart iTunes. After I rebooted my iBook iTunes worked... Maybe the 7.1.1 update should be marked with a must reboot?
