ITunes & iPhoto Libraries in Time Capsule?

For months I've been considering buying a Time Capsule. I have several questions before I spend the money and I'm finding contradicting points in the discussion groups and other websites.
I have a MacBook with a 60GB HD and I'm rapidly running out of space, buying another computer with a bigger HD is not an option right now, so my first question is: besides hosting the Time Machine backups, can I use Time Capsule to have a second iTunes and iPhoto Libraries? I know that whatever files I have in the TC wouldn't be backed up with Time Machine, but I mainly want to transfer all the music and pictures that I have on CD's, so I wouldn't mind not having them backed up. Would I be able to access those pictures and music files from my laptop?... How about from the Apple TV (if I ever get one)?
With the new TC you are supposed to be able to access the drive over the internet (with a MobilMe account). If the answer to my first question is YES and it's possible to have iTunes and iPhoto libraries in the TC, can those be reached over the internet too? If I'm away, could I work with pictures and listen to music stored in the TC back in my house?
And my last question is: if you can't partition the drive in the TC, would it be possible that eventually it's 500 GB HD gets full with the incremental backups of my Macbook therefore not leaving any extra space for file sharing?
Thank you very much for your help

First thing I would say is make sure you buy the new Time Capsule - I bought the old version and had a ton of connectivity issues - the new one has been great. You are right that you cannot partition the Time Capsule harddrive via disk utility (you can do it if you open the capsule, remove the harddrive, etc - but this voids the warranty), and you can't allocate time machine disk space either so it will eventually fill up the entire tc harddrive. However, you can attach a usb harddrive and then use that as a file server - it acts just like the built-in drive and can be shared/accessed over wan as well. So in this setup you would have the TC drive for backup and the usb drive for files/pictures/music - you could do the reverse of this too (usb for backup, tc for files).
As far as moving itunes and iphoto folders - that's pretty easily done and works well enough. You may notice more sluggish performance though since you will be streaming over wifi and anything that you add will be copied over the network.
I haven't tested the mobileme stuff so i can't say whether that works or not. I'd say the potential is there, but in my opinion the mobileme implementation and performance is not up to par. I don't think you'd be able to do what you want to do in this situation since your itunes and iphoto directories would be set to a local shared folder (eg \\Time Capsule\...\iTunes music\) whereas the mobile me would be a web folder.

  • Help! How can I restore iTunes/iPhoto library from Time Capsule to new Mac?

Sorry to trouble you, because it looks like this should be an easy thing, but I can't find an answer anywhere...
I've got an 2008 MacBook Pro that suddenly began to suffer start up problems. Sometimes it boots to a black/grey screen and sometimes the screen/mouse freezes after only a few minutes of use.
I've borrowed my brother's Mac until I can find out how to get mine repaired, so I'd like to copy over my iTunes and iPhoto stuff from a Time Capsule (where I'm hoping it hasn't been damaged) to his Mac. I only want to copy the iTunes and iPhoto stuff, without filling up his computer with all my other junk.
Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks!

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html

  • Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partition?

Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partitioned Time Capsule? I understand that the Time Machine (software) cannot backup a networked drive (the external) and that Time Capsule (the router/wireless hard drive) does not have its own backup software... so it won't backup the connected drive. What I would like is an alternate solution for having an automated backup of a networked drive. A 2TB Time Capsule has more than enough space for Time Machine backups of my family of Macbooks, so I had hoped to mirror a 500GB external drive (with shared media files) to a portion of the Time Capsule internal hard drive. I assume this would require a partition of the Time Capsule drive. If not, would the sparse file from the various computers being backed up need to be copied to the external drive as part of the RAID1 setup? This seems like overkill for the Time Machine backup, but it would cover the media files.

The complexity with this idea is the software has to run from a Mac computer on your network.. so you need a Mac turned on, probably most of the day.
It isn't possible to partition the TC although you can create a image area.
The software would have to copy the material, that means all files to be copied, go from USB drive, back to the Mac, then back to the TC, and written to the drive. In other words you have just added Network congestion, although a proper incremental backup type software will not actually use a lot of capacity.
Finally it will be slow.. network drives are slower than internal drives. Well USB connected drive is much slower than the same drive connected directly to the computer.. and if the drive is connected directly to a computer it can be shared with the network.

Read carefully the speed of the USB drive plugged into the TC.

You can move your iTunes library.. Apple have explicit instructions to do it. If the library is moved to the TC and accessed over wireless, the efficiency of the whole system will drop dramatically..
A file you download goes.. Modem---TC--Laptop--Back to TC--Store on disk. Double looping the wireless slows it dramatically..
As far as using TC for your iTunes.. you CAN.. but SHOULD YOU?
    Store files on the TC.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24380694#24380694
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

    Hi shldr2thewheel,
it has been a while since we have last spoke, I would like to let you know, I am still working on getting used to the switch from windows to a Mac/Apple system. I do have a new question for you, I did purchase In Design CS5.5 through journeyed.com through Cuyahoga Community College of which I attend as a student, is there a way to purchase an online book through iTunes to learn that as well? Also, you know me, the struggling student, I would also, when and if the book can be purchased through the iTunes, would need to know if you do know of a much easier book for struggling students like myself and at a reasonable price as well for the In Design CS5.5 program. Our campus bookstore had closed early, and, so did the colleges library and our local library here where I do live, so, I cannot go to either place to purchase a book or to take out a book, plus cash funds are low at this moment as well but, I do have money left on the iTunes account to use, if it can be used. So, can it be used, the iTunes money, towards finding a low priced online book? I am in great need of assistance as I have a project due for my one course for this Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
Sincerely in need of help once again,
    Kim

  • How do I back up my iTunes folder to my time capsule?

How do I back up my iTunes folder to my Time Capsule?

    A couple of issues here:
First, keeping backups and other data on the TC's internal HD presents problems.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.
Second, as Bob says, Time Machine can't back up either the TC's hard drive or a USB drive connected to it.
it's a bit messy, but this might work:
Attach a USB drive to the TC and put your iTunes library on it.
Create a disk image (as in #Q3) on the TC's internal HD, and use a 3rd-party app such as Chronosync to back iTunes up to the disk image.  I've not done that, so can't swear to it, but it appears it would work.

  • Can I store iphoto pictures in time capsule and use with pad

Can I store iphoto pictures in time capsule and use with pad

We can tell you that it is possible to store separate images on the Time Capsule drive. If however, you are asking if you can access separate images from your Time Machine backups on the Time Capsule, this is not possible.
How you get the images that your want from iPhoto on your Mac to the Time Capsule drive is a question for the iPhoto experts. It will likely involve "exporting" the files that you want and then moving them using the Finder to the Time Capsule drive.
How you access those images on the Time Capsule from an iPad is a question for the Using iPad experts.

  • Access iPhoto library in time capsule

    Hello,
I have my iPhoto library in time capsule. Everything is ok with my mac, view, edit, stream, etc.
But some times I dont bring my Mac home, and I would like access my library from my iPad and if possible stream to apple tv, like i do it from Mac.
Since its not possible to access my library with iPhoto for iOS, is there any app that does it?
    Thanks,
    ruirego

No.  The two iPhoto apps have only their name in common.  There's no interaction between the two possible. You can send a feature requres to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/.

  • ITunes Media folder on Time Capsule

    Hi,
Follow http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364 instructions, I moved my "iTunes Media" folder to time capsule shared folder.
There have been no problems for video and mp3s.
However, I noticed accessing of my iPhone Apps from iTunes library is painfully slow. Just give an idea, "Get Info" on "Angry Birds" takes 30sec to appear, update "Angry Birds" tooks 30min to finish and during the progress the iTunes does not have any response (progress showing "Processing file")
The problem does not exist on Mac.
    Is this normal?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Baoshi

The issue is the TC is slow to start up.. each time you start your Mac.. it will not be able to spin up the TC fast enough to locate the iTunes library so you will get an error and have to manually direct the iTunes to the library.. over and over and over..
    The TC is really unsuitable.
But there are suggestions on how to do this.. move the whole application to the TC.. and use an icon on the desktop to start up the iTunes.. I am not sure of the details.. but I have seen the description.. as long as the software starts up from the same place as the library it should work..
    Ask in the iTunes section.
There is nothing wrong with the TC .. it is working as it was designed.. as a target for Time Machine.

  • How I can transfer my itunes library to my Time Capsule?

how I can transfer my itunes library to my Time Capsule?

iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder
But, before you do this, you might want to think about how you will backup the iTunes library that will be moved to the Time Capsule. (Time Machine cannot do this).
Since you will need another hard drive as the target for the backup of the iTunes library, it might make more sense to move your iTunes library to a hard drive attached directly to your Mac.
Then, Time Machine will back up both your Mac...and....the attached hard drive to your Time Capsule using Time Machine.

can i use time capsule to backup movies and see them wireless without redirecting my itunes library to the time capsule?

It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.
See Win 7 OS,64 Bit..Going back to ver 10.3 as I wish to use the cdbackup/restore version..I for a previous thread discussing this.

  • IPhoto and iTunes libraries on Time Capsule?

I just bought the 1TB Time Capsule today and am busy copying things over. So far the setup has been very smooth except it took a while for me to realize that my MobileMe account name had to be all lower case. (Why?)
I know that iTunes lets you specify the location of the iTunes Music folder, but I don't see an equivalent option in iPhoto.
My MacBook Pro's HD is full of my development work so I need to offload 25GB of photos onto the Time Capsule. I'm hoping iPhoto can handle this indirection (like iTunes) without tanking performance too much. Any experience with that, guys? I suspect that iTunes supports this because music files are typically streamed whereas photo files are not.
Also, I'm curious why the Time Capsule is set up with a Data drive but you can't write at the top level. How do I create multiple "air disks" that are password protected for multiple users? Do I treat the Time Capsule like any other drive that can be partitioned and assigned access privileges or what?

Turns out my whole first day of setting up Time Capsule was wasted, because of its half-baked user account model and misleading instructions. I had copied 250GB of data or so, and then tried to set up two user accounts plus the default "Data" volume which I intend to rename to "Shared". I naturally assumed that because I'm the administrator, I'd be able to move files around at will.
But no, AirPort Utility utterly fails to handle this scenario. As soon as you create a user account, even if you're the admin, you can no longer see any of the files that you previously copied to the AirDisk. They're still there, but you have to revert to the default settings in order to see them again.
    This is asinine!
So, I'm stuck deleting everything and starting over. And what's worse, deleting seems to take as much time as copying the files did in the first place! Even if you restore the default settings, there's no way to quick-format the drive. So beware people, do your research first, set things up the way you want (or as close as this thing will allow)-- BEFORE you start copying over your digital life. And then make sure you don't delete your sources until you're sure things are working the way you expect.

  • IPhoto 11 (ver. 9.1.1) Consolidating Libraries on Time Capsule

Can I consolidate all my iPhoto libraries?
Can I store them my Time Capsule external HD?

It's strongly recommended to have a minimum of 10 GB free space on the boot drive for optimal performance of both the system and applications. If you use iDVD then that minimum is 20 GB.
So, yes, moving your library to the Time Capsule and removing it from the boot drive could speed it up. HOWEVER, if you connect to your Time Capsule wirelessly DO NOT try it. There are too many possibilities of getting a dropout when working wirelessly and that can and will corrupt the library.
If you're hard wired to the TC then it's the same a an external HD and would work very well.
I'm running iPhoto 11 and also get slow performance from iPhoto 11 when first opening and when opening a book.
Try rebuilding the library occasionally with just Option #1 to see if that makes any difference. If not they try a gain with Options #1, #2 and #6. I'm not sure which option does the trick but do notice that it does speed iPhoto 11 a little.
