ITunes/iPod sync question

I've noticed that the last couple of CDs I've loaded into iTunes and the last couple of playlists I've created get deleted from my iTunes library now when I sync. I still have capacity. What's going on?

If you sync your iPod automatically, then yes, the next time you sync to that empty library, your iPod will come up empty. It's not a good idea to use the iPod as a storage device. Eventually, you'll probably have to Restore it, and a Restore will wipe the contents. You'll need the library on your computer to resync the songs.
Why not invest in an external hard drive. They're not too expensive. Also...what file type are your songs. Some types eat up a lot more memory than others.

Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?
Have you successfully synced from this iTunes library/computer before?
If so have you done anything like update iTunes on the computer since it last successfully synced?
Do the songs play in iTunes?
Does any media now sync to the iPod?
Do you have the right boxes checked to sync?

  • IPod syncing question

In my itunes, I only have music, no videos, games, movies, podcasts, or shows. I just connected my ipod to charge it, and sync it. Under the ipod summary, "sync movies", "sync TV shows", "sync Podcasts", "sync Photos", "sync Contacts", and "sync Games" were checked, along with the music. I just want to know if, since I don't have any movies, videos, photos, etc in my itunes, did syncing them, along with my music, take any space on my ipod?
Also, it states that my 30GB ipod has 27.84 GB capacity. Why is this?
    Michael

    1. No. These options will only transfer data to the iPod if content of that type exists in the iTunes library.
    2. See this article for an explanation of the discrepancy.

  • Itunes / Ipod syncing....  HELP!

    Hello,
I had my old Itunes Library on my Powerspec using W-XP PRO, then one day my PC started to cat funny... I think it was hacked, so then I decided to back up some of my items to an external HD! (I put my 5 Gigs of Music on my external HD) then my PC crashed, HD failed... It was not a good site!
Now I am using my older Dell 4300, using Windows 2000... I need to know how to get my Itunes Library back onto THIS PC! (Dell)
Should I just insert the HD onto this computer and copy all my music over to Itunes?
and then will my Ipod sync with this PC even though its a different PC? Do I have to authorize it?
    Thanks in advance!
    Eliott

It's certainly not true that only the newer iPods support mp3s. There seems to have been a number of problems with 7.2 and the release of the non-drm tracks from iTunes. It most often crops up with tracks that started out in life as drm tracks purchased through the iTunes store that were subseqently converted to non-drm tracks. Depending on how they were added to the library, it appears that iTunes thinks they are still the drm tracks but corrupted. Deggie's suggestion has worked for most folks, as best I can tell.
    Best of luck.

  • ? about itunes/ipod syncing

I have recently reimported many of my cds at a higher quality. I am afraid when I plug my ipod in, it will automatically add all of the newer higher quality versions I imported as well as keeping the old versions. My ipod is set up for automatic syncing when I plug it in. Any suggestions on how to avoid have 2 versions of my cds without having to manually delete them?

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes for Mac - Keyboard Shortcuts
Did you delete the earlier version of the songs you reimported? If you have deleted them from iTunes then syncing the iPod will remove the old versions and replace them with the new ones. The original songs will only stay on the iPod if they are still in iTunes.

  • ITunes/iPod sync help needed!

So I have a 2nd gen iPod touch, and I buy all my music straight off of iTunes app.  My old Mac computer (Let's call it Mac1) had all of my songs that I had bought on there prior to when we replaced it (may 2011).  Then, we got Mac2. I can't put my songs that I bought after May 2011 onto Mac2, because it will only let me delete my ENTIRE library on my iPod (which has all of my purchased music on it). I don't want to lose those songs that I spent my money on.  How do I make my iPod sync to a new computer and get the iPod's songs onto the computer?

Just transfer the iTunes purchases to the new computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
You may also be able to redownload the music( and apps) by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • ITunes + iPod sync problems

so, I plugged in my iPod last night for the first time since updating to 7.7 - a friend had already warned me there might be something wrong with the syncing, so I was a little bit apprehensive about it anyway.
so, it found my iPod and started the sync - music was still playing so I didn't think about it. when I checked the progress iTunes had frozen completely (the spinning beach ball of death turned up too). I forced a quit of iTunes then ejected my iPod and guess what? anything that was on the iPod was wiped. (I'm not too bothered) then I restarted and tried to plug my iPod in again, hoping that I might be able sync again - this time I waited. iTunes then displayed an error stating that it could not recognise the contents of my iPod and did I want to restore it. I felt I had no choice so I started that process. it's been over 5 minutes since the little 'Restoring iPod' status bar popped up and it's done nothing. I can't click around it whilst in iTunes either.
I guess my question is - are Apple going to fix this bug with 7.7?
in the meantime, any suggestions on how I can just get my tracks back onto my iPod?

    arteest103,
First, the .itl library can cause the same issue on a Windows-based PC.
Second, often third party applications that add themselves to the iTunes source list, or offer to assist with managing your library may modify the .itl file. In at least some of the posts where somebody is experiencing an issue, programs that do so have been mentioned. Apple doesn't control what you install on your computer.
Third, data can become corrupted over time. That is why backing up is always recommended.
Rebuilding the .itl file, if that is what is causing your issue will resolve the issue.
Do you ever find yourself reorganizing books, sports cards, moving furniture, reorganizing recipes, etc? Essentially the .itl file is a database or organization table that keeps track of what is in the iTunes Library. Rebuilding it is like reorganizing/cleaning it up. The steps to do so are in this article:

    Hope this helps,

  • IPod syncing questions

    Hello All,
I would like to do the following:
Open iTunes and download podcasts A,B,C,D.
Attach my iPod and copy podcasts A,B,C,D.
    Detach iPod.
Delete podcasts A,B,C,D from iTunes on my computer.
    Download podcasts E,F,G,H on iTunes.
Attach iPod and copy podcasts E,F,G,H without having to lose podcasts A,B,C,D.
Is this possible? If yes how?
I simply did not know how to even search for the question in the forums since I simply don't understand the concept of "syncing". Why not just use the word copy like all normal human beings?
    Thank you very much.

    1. Yes.
    2. Yes, if they can be used on the iPod.
    3. No, except for iTunes Store content, which can be transferred to a computer authorized to play it by using the Transfer Purchases option.
    4. iTunes will create a playlist for the iPod and sync its contents.
    5. A confirmation message about changing the computer the iPod is synced to will appear.

  • Itunes ipod syncing

My setup: mac pro workstation, macbook.
I've got my itunes and iphoto library on my mac pro. I've written a script (basically rsync with some adjustments) that I can run on my macbook to either push / pull my iTunes Directory and iPhoto directory between the two machines. This also allows me to sync my iphone with both computers. I've also disabled my iphoto from opening when I plug in my iphone.
However after do a fresh pull down to my macbook I plugin my iphone and do a sync, it erases all my photos on my phone. However if i do the same thing but open my iphoto first before I sync everything works fine.
Any idea what iphoto is doing that basically "blesses" so the iphone can work with itunes.

Go to iPod_Control folder on the iPod vwhile disk access is active and copy the folder Music to My Music (or in the music folder of your user). Now open iTunes. Under the File menu, click Add Folder to Library. Go to My Music (or the Music folder) and click the folder copied from the iPod.
You will have to show hiidden files and folders to see the iPod_Control folder.

  • ITunes & iPod music question?

So I got a new iPod (4th gen if that matters) and I have over 3 thousands songs including over hour long mixes so it takes a LONG time to put all the songs on my ipod. I've been at this for like 3 days nows (putting music on my iPod) and i've just hit a wall. I didn't sync my ipod to put on all the music that I have on it already, i just Shift+A all the music in the library then drag & dropped it on the ipod. But now it stopped working? (fml) So I was looking what was wrong and noticed i wasn't syncing with my iTunes. I'm only a few songs (800+) short of having all my music on my iPod. So I was wondering if I tried syncing with my iTunes will all the music already on there be deleted & the process restarted? I don't want that. ._. takes too long. any other solution?

Ok. Does that script work instantly? I waited a bit and then when I clicked in itunes, Script Editor told me something like "Itunes had an object error".
Then I checked and there are 3110 checked songs in my itunes library and only 2696 on my ipod. Why is this?

  • IPod Sync Question

So I have an album downloaded from the iTunes store on my iPod. A couple days ago I saw the actual cd in a store so I bought it. Now I want to replace the iTunes store downloaded songs with the songs imported from the actual CD. I think the easiest way to do it is this:
    1. Delete songs off iTunes.
    2. Import CD.
    3. Plug in iPod and let sync.
I'd think that would do it. However, I think there is some issue where iTunes will just assume that the songs are the same since the tags are identical, etc and therefor will not replace the song with the new cd version and instead see that nothing has changed. Therefor, I'm thinking what I really have to do is this:
    1. Plug in iPod and let sync.
    2. Delete songs off iTunes.
    3. Sync iPod so the songs are deleted off iPod.
    4. Import CD
    5. Sync iPod to copy new cd versions on iPod.
So will the first method described be enough or do I need to take the extra steps in method 2 in order for it to work?
I've run in to this issue before when I ripped a song off a cd, found that it had skips, cleaned cd, reripped it, and sync'd. Then I found that the song on my iPod still had skips, even though the song in my iTunes did not. But the sync function would not replace the skipped file with the new one (i think) because they are identical. In the situation presented in this thread however, one file is downloaded from iTunes store and one is from the cd so they aren't identical.
BTW, I have 120GB iPod Classic and using Windows with current verion of iTunes.

I would take route 2. A few extra steps will guarantee that the new tracks will sync over.

  • ITunes iPod syncing in preferences

In the preferences for iTunes there is a Syncing tab. Here you can list the iPods that are synced to this machine. My problem is , how do get the iPod name in the box provided? Its greyed out. Or is this just for iPhones and iPod Touches.

That applies to iPods that can create and save data, and would want to back up: the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Other iPods have no need for the Syncing tab. (That's why the icon looks like an iPhone.)
Syncing music, podcasts, contacts and calendars is managed from the iPod's page that you get when you click on the iPod in the DEVICES list. Those things aren't "backed up" from the iPod -- they are loaded onto the iPod from iTunes; iTunes always has the "real" copy.

  • Crashing issues, and ipod sync question

Hi, first off, I'm running Aperture 2.1.4 on a new MBP snow leopard 10.6.1
My first question should be easy. Whenever I plug in my ipod, Aperture opens and wants to import the photos I've put on it into a folder. How do I stop Aperture from opening every time I plug it in?
My next question is about crashing. Ever since I upgraded to snow leopard, it seems like whenever I use the retouching brush 4-10 times, aperture freezes and then force quits itself. I've sent the auto-response message that pops up to Apple every time, but I'm not expecting much to come of that. Is there anything to do to stop this from happening? Has it been documented before or am I the only one with this problem?
One final bonus question. I'm importing RAW files (from a Nikon D300) but at first the previews are very, very different. I believe this is because my camera is set to the "vivid" setting, but when I first turn on quick preview before all the images are imported, the images I look at appear very contrasty and saturated, even though I would guess the vivid settings applied in my camera are for jpgs only, and don't affect raw images at all. How and why is aperture pulling this information from the camera when it doesn't relate to the photo? I don't care if this question is answered or not, it's not a huge deal. I was just curious.
    Thanks in advance!

I can longer sync my iTouch (1st, 8GB) onto my machine since updating to iTunes 8.2
I currently have an iMac PowerPC G5 and running 10.4.11. I have tried several things to trouble shoot this problem.
    1) I have reset the iTouch (1st, 8GB) several times
    2) I have tried all the USB ports on the back of the machine
    3) I have restarted the machine several times
NOTE: I have a Fifth Gen (iPod with Video) 30GB and still works fine since the 8.2 iTunes update and I have no issues with syncing it with iTunes 8.2
The only way the iTouch WORKS..........is when I hook it up to my machine at work. My work machine has a Intel dual processor and running the most current version of Leopard, it was also updated with the 8.2 iTunes update and works fine.
