ITunes is duplication my purchases and clogging my hard drive

Hi folks, it doesnt sound critical but this is my situation:
I have a rather large music collection so ever since I started using iTunes I have always had my music on an external drive(a NAS more specifically). My music library has always been 'z:/music' and not the default itunes library on the C:-drive ever. Of recent days every purchase I've made has suddenly began downloading it's files onto the iTunes folder on the C:-drive and also it has been downloading files onto my z:/music folder. What has been happening specifically is this: say I puchased and downloaded the movie 'Burn After Reading', a file is downloaded into my C:/my documents/my music/itunes/Burn After Reading.m4v, also a file is downloaded to my z:/music/downloads/Burn After Reading_Joel Coen&Eth.tmp/download.m4v. it is also accompanied by a 'Info.Plist' file.
I go to iTunes and 'check info' on the file displayed in my library and it's destination path is the file contained on the Z:-drive. I also recheck my preferences just like it always has been, my music folder is still 'z:/music'.
I'm trying to figure out why iTunes has started saving my downloads with such an obviously silly name, after all I now have a collection of 'download.m4v files contained in various folders with no sensible way to know what the files are if they are ever taken out of their source folders. And why has it also begun saving what to my eyes is a correctly named file (Burn After Reading.m4v) file to my iTunes folder on my C:-drive.
Most importantly how can I get it to stop. I have simply a huuge amount of music, an enormous and growing collection of audiobooks and a respectable and growing collection of movies from the iTunes store. The PC I run itunes from has been deliberately kept as basic as I can manage and besides application and operating system updates there have been no changes to it's set up quite literally for over 3-years, I use this computer exclusively to download my audible.com and itunes content and thus have learned to keep is simple for the sake of stability and consistency. What do you suppose has happened to it, and again more importantly how can I get it to stop. This machine only has a 40-GB harddrive and it is quickly running out of available free space (3-GB or so) if I make a large enough purchase, like 3-movies a one time I will obviously not have enough available free space to store the files mistakenly downloaded onto the C:-drive.
sorry for the long-winded-ness but thought it best to be thorough..
help!

Thanks, I tried that but it still didn't work.
Just seemed again to resort to the lonely files that are in the default location.
I'm in the process of moving all that again (the folders that I know are being found) and transfering everything onto another partition in the hard drive.
Hopefully that will work but it feel like something is fundamentally wrong. Maybe an upgrade glitch?

  • Itunes purchases not on Mac hard drive . . .

I have a very full 100 gb hard drive on my laptop (PowerBook G4) and an 80GB hard drive with lots of spare room on my iPod (classic). I have a fare amount of video content that I have purchased from itunes, but I do not have room for all of it on my hard drive (it is backed up on an external hard drive). Is there any way to keep the content on the iPod even though it is NOT on my computers hard drive? As it stands now, when I sync my iPod anything that was removed from my computers hard drive is removed from my ipod.
thanks for any help you can offer.

You can do this by switching to Manual sync mode in iTunes... however, if you do, I would frankly expect you to be back here in about six months with an "I lost everything!" post.
That is, I don't think it's a very safe idea... as an alternative, you could get an external hard drive and move your iTunes Library onto there, or at least burn backups of your files to CD/DVD before you delete them from your computer.

  • TS1382 I have a ipod classic 160GB and it's not showing any music anymore, but there is still 7GB of memory being used, and I don't have it back up on my itunes, since I had to put a new hard drive on my computer. Any suggestion to find out whats on that

I have a ipod classic 160GB and it's not showing any music anymore, but there is still showing 7GB of memory being used, and I don't have it backed up on my itunes, since I had to put a new hard drive on my computer. Any suggestion to find out whats on that memory or to get it the music back, there is approximately over 1400 songs on it?

What is the memory being used by, is it Other? If it is, that means the iPod can no longer read the music, so it has put it all in "Other".
The usual fix for this is to allow the iPod to Sync with its iTunes Library. If that doesn't work, the next option is to Restore the iPod using the Restore command in iTunes, on the Device/Summary pane.
Unless you are very (very) lucky, I suspect that you are going to have to Restore your iPod. Restoring will remove everything form the iPod and put back onto it only what it finds in your iTunes Library, which you say is currently empty.
    If you have to rebuild your Library after this issue, by adding all the music back again, this is going to be hard to hear, but for the future, you may want to consider always having a backup of your library. The easiset way to back the Library up is;
if the Library is small enough, burn it to a DVD, as digital files, not a "music CD".
If your Library is too large for a DVD, buy yourself an external hard drive and copy the Library onto the drive. Remember to update the backup every so often.

  • I have backed my iTunes with over 10,000 songs on a hard drive and than i reset my computer to factory settings, when i put it back on my macbook pro only 2030 were able to be downloaded back to the same computer

i have backed my iTunes with over 10,000 songs on a hard drive and than i reset my computer to factory settings because my email was hacked, when i downloaded the music back to my macbook pro only 2030 were able to be downloaded . how can i download all my music back?
    michel p.

I usually err on the sideof caution when someone says "downloaded" and take it to mean anything fro actually downloaded, to copies, to imported, to moved (frolder to folder), but even if they were "downloaded"... if the old email was hacked, and subseuqently closed out, that leaves the downloaded files "orphaned" if you will, belonging to the old ID. So, while they may be on the HD, they're inaccessible now.
One of the biggest reasons I NEVER keep anything in my library with DRM employed in it.  I bought it. I own it. I'm not going to get locked out of it.

  • Attempting to upgarde itunes and I get an error message looking for "an alternate path to a folder containing 'iTunes.msi' location.  I've searched my hard drive and the file doesn't exist.  What to do?

Attempting to upgarde itunes and I get an error message looking for "an alternate path to a folder containing 'iTunes.msi' location.  I've searched my hard drive and the file doesn't exist.  What to do?

This worked...found on a prior discussion:
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page)...
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
From the link above (near the top of the page)....Under 'download locations'   click on 'download@majorgeeks'
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you just downloaded and ran.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    Restart your computer.
Re-download Itunes (latest version form Itunes website) and install.  It worked!

  • I lost all my purchased songs when my hard drive.  Can I get another copy from Apple?

I lost all my purchased songs when my hard drive.  Can I get another copy from Apple?

Quite possibly, at least assuming you are based in the US. Install the latest build of iTunes, sign into the iTunes Store and click the Purchased entry in the Quck Links panel. Here in the UK I only get tabs fro Apps and Books but, if I understand correctly, you should also get a tab for Music. Click on the Not in My Library button and you should be able to download your purchases again.

  • My mac hard drive crashed. Can I restore my iTunes library from my iPod to my new hard drive?

My mac hard drive crashed, and had to be replaced. Can I restore my iTunes library from my iPod to my new hard drive? About 2500 songs, some from iTunes store, most from other online sources or my own CDs.

To restore non-purchased music on the iTunes Store to iTunes from the iPod, you need a third-party application as Senuti > http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/ You can use others, but this has worked perfectly for me

  • Recovering purchased music after a hard drive crash

I purchased some music from istore and so i had it on my itunes. i never updated it onto my ipod, and then my hard drive crashed so i lost all of my music. i was able to recover most of my music but not the most recently purchased stuff. is there anyway that i can recover the songs that i purchased?

You probably can't without purchasing them again, but some people have been able to by filling out and submitting the form on this page.

  • HT201272 I am trying to redownload purchased music after a hard drive dilemma.  When I click purchased I get an error message.  Any insight?

I am trying to redownload purchased music after a hard drive dilemma.  When I click on the 'purchased' category in the iTunes store I get an error message.  Any insight?

Does it include "unable to download "ITEM" at this time. Please try again"? I think there is an issue with redownloading your purchases using the "purchased list" option. I suggest you contact the support team for a history regrant (your purchases will be reposted to your account", which i think is a one time exception and would only include the items which are still available in the store.

  • How do i make itunes find my music library on an external hard drive?

OK. So i got a new PC and ive downloaded itunes. Ive authorised itunes. However, no matter how hard i try, i cannot get it to find my existing itunes library which is situated on an external hard drive.
I know ive done it before with my last PC but cannot remember how...and itunes made sense back then rather than the nonsense it is now.
    Any tips?
    Cheers

I have a tesco router and an external hard drive attached to it as a network drive (shared) for my macbook and MB-Air. Have no problems with my MB accessing it, but with MB-AIR it says -  'the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. pls contact your system administrator to resolve the problem'. MB-Air uses maverick downloaded yesterday - upgrade from mountain lion. MB uses snow leopard still, as i am quite used to it and am thinking of upgrade if mavericks work fine on air. Also have parallel on snow leopard but it is no longer supported according to mac website - if i upgrade am i going to lose my parallel and will have to buy a new one!!!

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

yes, given enough space on the destination drive (your library may grow over time). also, the drive needs to be connected directly to your Mac.
you might want to make sure the drive is not excluded from TM backups by checking in system preferences > time machine > options.
also, as for moving your iTunes library, see this read for tips/instructions.

Can I use an External hard drive and my computers hard drive for apple tv

If you mean to hold iTunes content to stream then the answer is yes.  Your iTunes library  folder and the media usually live in the same location, but media can be in a different or several different locations.  The external drive wuld have to e connected and powered to stream media to AppleTV.
