Itunes is ignoring ipod and windows doesn't recongise it, am desperate.

i don't usually connect my ipod to a computer because i don't have regular access to one so my ipod has been displaying the ipod sad sign and has been saying "connect ipod to itunes to restore" for a few weeks.
but when i did connect my ipod nothing was happening so i went through all the help and support pages. baisically, the ipod doesn't restore because of error 1418. i've already read and tried the related articles on the apple support pages but nothing is helping. i've also tried everything window's support suggests but that's not helping either.
so if anyone has any idea what could be wrong or has had the same problem, please contact me i will be eternally greatful!
ps: the fact that the whole thing might just be broken has occured to me but i've had an ipod break on me before and it was just dead and didn't display all sort of "fix me" warnings...

*Checking hard-drive for errors*
Hold Menu+Select on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Connect to your computer, closing iTunes if it opens. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors* (Optional - takes ages but a good idea if you've reason to suspect physical damage). Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ) and should stand a better chance of a successful restore.
Since you say you don't have regular access to a computer I'm wondering if you have all your music stored on the computer you are planning to use for the restore. Restoring wipes all content from the iPod which might not be what you want to happen at this point... Check out this post from Zevoneer for some iPod recovery options.

Most of the tools will rely on a valid iPod library but the manual recovery method should work regardless, albeit with limitations.

My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

Wonder if anyone can help. I recently bought a new IPOD and gave my old one to me brother who has a PC. His PC does no recognise the Ipod in prefs it says IPOD not connected. Anyone any ideas about a way around this

Can't see your iPod in iTunes or Windows Explorer? Remember these five basic suggestions when you run into a problem with your iPod. If one of the following doesn’t help, read on for solutions to specific problems.

Still can't see your iPod?

Your iPod isn't connected to a high-power USB port
If you're connecting an iPod, iPod mini, or iPod shuffle to your Windows computer, make sure that you're connecting it to a high-power USB 2.0 port on your computer (not a low-power one such as the USB port on your keyboard or bus-powered USB hub).
Typically, USB 2.0 high-power ports are located directly on your computer. Try connecting your iPod to another USB port on the computer (or to a self-powered USB 2.0 hub that's connected to a high-power USB 2.0 port on your computer) if the computer still doesn't recognize your iPod. Alternatively, if your computer has a FireWire connection, try using that instead.
If you're connecting an iPod, iPod mini, or iPod shuffle to a Windows laptop computer through USB, connect the laptop to a power outlet before connecting your iPod.
You're not using a WHQL-certified IEEE 1394 card
If you have a FireWire (IEEE 1394) card installed in your computer and are using it to connect your iPod, make sure that the card is Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) certified. If it isn't, your iPod may not be recognized, or you may not be able to send music to the iPod.
If you're not sure about your card's WHQL certification, check the inbox material that came with your FireWire card or contact the card's manufacturer. You can view a list of WHQL-certified cards on the Windows Hardware Compatibility List website. To view this:
Go to the Windows Hardware Compatibility List website.
Enter All Products in the "Search for" field.
From the Product Categories pop-up menu, choose 1394 Controller.
Click the Search Now button.
Note: Windows XP information is not listed on the initial search screen, but is listed when you click on an individual card.
You can also check the list of recommended FireWire and USB cards that have been tested by Apple with iPod and Windows XP. (Apple sells FireWire cards that are compatible with iPod at the Apple Store.)
To rule out an issue with your FireWire card, try connecting a different FireWire device to the card to see if your computer recognizes it.
Your connections aren't secure
Make sure that there is nothing in or blocking your computer's USB (or FireWire) port, and that the cable connections to your iPod and computer are secure.
Your iPod cable is faulty
Make sure that you are using the cable that came with your iPod. Some third-party cables may not work properly with iPod.
Make sure that nothing is in or blocking your computer's USB or FireWire port.
Check the connections to make sure that the cable is completely plugged in.
Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
If swapping out your old cable for another resolves the issue, then your original cable should be replaced.
Your iPod isn't charged or getting power
Your iPod must have enough of a charge for your computer to recognize it. Connect your iPod to its power adapter or to a high-power port on your computer to charge your iPod if the battery is depleted. If you have an iPod nano, click here for more information. If your iPod is connected through FireWire but isn't getting power from the FireWire bus, your computer may not recognize it.
Your computer's port may be faulty
If another FireWire or USB port is available on your computer, try connecting your iPod to it. If you are using FireWire and have a USB cable to connect to the iPod, try using USB instead. If you are using USB and have a FireWire port and cable to connect to the iPod, try using FireWire instead.
If your computer recognizes your iPod after trying a different port, the original port could be faulty.
Note: iPod will not automatically wake up if you connect it to a 4-pin FireWire port. You must press the Select button (the wheel's center button) on the iPod to wake it from sleep.
There's a conflict in the FireWire chain
Your computer may not recognize your iPod if there's a device conflict in the FireWire chain. To see if this is the case:
Disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire ports.
Connect your iPod to your computer's FireWire port.
If your computer recognizes your iPod, you should troubleshoot for FireWire device conflicts.
Your computer needs to be restarted
Sometimes simply restarting your computer can resolve issues.
Your FireWire card isn't recognized by Windows
Make sure that Windows recognizes your FireWire card. Follow these steps to find out if Windows sees your card.
Third-party software may be causing conflicts
Some third-party software (such as security software) may prevent your computer from recognizing your iPod. Try adjusting the settings of such software, or temporarily disabling it, to see if that resolves the issue.
Your iPod hard disk's format is damaged or was altered
If you reformatted the hard disk on your iPod, or if something has damaged or altered the disk's format, iTunes or My Computer may not recognize iPod. To resolve this issue, you may need to restore iPod.
Warning: The restore process will delete all of your songs and files on the iPod. This process cannot be undone. Always make a backup of your important data before restoring your iPod.
iPod Software needs to be installed (or reinstalled)
Make sure that you install the iPod for Windows Software from the iPod for Windows CD that came with your iPod. The iPod Watcher should appear in the system tray. If you don't see it, you will need to reinstall the iPod for Windows Software.
There may be an issue with your computer
If another computer is available, verify that the same issues happen with the other computer. If the other computer recognizes your iPod, you may want to troubleshoot for issues with your original computer.
Your iPod needs service
If after following these steps your computer still doesn't recognize iPod, see the iPod Service website to arrange for service.

Resolution
Try disconnecting and reconnecting your device, then syncing again to solve this issue.
Orphaned files may remain on your iOS device if it is physically disconnected while syncing music, podcasts, videos, or photos. This can prevent iTunes from syncing the iOS device on subsequent sync sessions. When this happens, the Capacity indicator in iTunes may report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the iOS device. To resolve this issue:
1. Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
2. Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
3. Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
4. Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
          - If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 5.
5. Turn off the automatic syncing functions for the iOS device. To do this:
          - Select the iOS device from the iTunes window and click the Summary tab.
          - Deselect "Automatically sync when this device is connected" and select the "Sync only checked songs and videos" checkbox.
          - Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
          - Reduce the amount of data that is being synced to the device and resync the device. For example, if syncing your Music library exceeds the memory capacity of the device, choose "Selected playlists" to transfer rather than "All songs and playlists" under the Music tab in iTunes.

Disable anti virus software and turn off the Firewall.

Hey everyone, quick question. Does anybody know if their are any drivers that I can download so that my Ipod Nano will work on my computer. I have Windows ME, and I guess Ipod isn't compatible with ME. Anyone know of any drivers?

I have the same issue. An iTunes help page (iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues - Apple Support) suggested I hold down shift and control when clicking to open iTunes, which opens iTunes fine for me. That would mean the problem is in the third party plug-ins that work with iTunes. However, the help pages did not say what to do with the plug-ins once I knew that was the issue. The pages said to find the plug-ins and move them to the Desktop, which I did. That's where the help pages stopped, which is ridiculous. Does anyone know what to do from there?

I fixed the problem. When I was trying to clean the connector of the iPhone I must have bent some pins. I have straightened them to the best of my ability and now it syncs. If your iPhone charges, but doesn't sync, most likely you have a similar problem, because the iPhone doesn't need all of its pins to charge, but it does need all of them to sync.

How can I sync my iPod Classic with iTunes 11.1.4 and Windows 7 64-bit?

After assistance from ‘b Noir’ (and losing--then finally regaining--my DVD/CD reader in the process), I finally installed the iTunes Version 11.1.4 update on my Windows 7 64-bit PC. So I am again able to import music from CDs, play music on my PC with iTunes, and burn CDs as I could do with previous iTunes versions. Then, however, I purchased some new music and tried to sync iTunes with my iPod Classic for the first time since the update to 11.1.4. So far, I have been spectacularly unsuccessful. Can anyone help me?
With previous iTunes versions, sync was automatic when I connected iPod to a USB port. Now when I connect iPod Classic to PC's USB port (I've tried two different ports), iPod’s screen says “Connecting” but iTunes doesn’t open. And while iPod is connected to the USB port, I can't open iTunes by right-clicking its icon and selecting “Open.” (ITunes, however, always opens OK if iPod is NOT connected). With the iPod connected to a PC's USB port, I opened Windows 7 “Devices and Printers.” Devices shown included both (a) the “Apple iPod USB Device” and (b) “Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.” I right-clicked each of these device icons in turn and selected “troubleshoot.” Both times, the report was “Troubleshooting couldn’t identify the problem.”
I am also unable to properly “eject” the iPod. I tried ejecting (a) from the Windows taskbar's Notification Area, (b) from Windows “Devices and Printers” and (c) by right clicking the iTunes icon and selecting “Eject.” Nothing worked, so I reluctantly pulled the cable out of the iPod without ejecting. That causes a yellow triangle with an exclamation point to appear in “Devices and Printers” for my PC—which disappears after shutting down and rebooting the PC.
If I start iTunes and THEN connect the iPod Classic to the USB port, iTunes does nothing and almost instantly freezes (shows as “not responding” in Windows Task Manager and I have to close it via Task Manager).
Suggestions, please, on what I need to do? My iPod Classic continues to work just fine, but I can't put any of my newly purchased music on it and I guess it will become an expensive paperweight if the battery happens to run down. If nothing else, is there an old version of iTunes I can download somewhere that likely will work with the iPod Classic and my PC setup? Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for your response--yes, I've seen the TS1363 document.
I was able to open iTunes, start the iPod Diagnostic Device Connectivity Test, and connect the iPod when prompted to do so. The only problem reported by the diagnostic program was "No iPod, iPhone or iPad found." So it does seem as if the TS1363 document should apply. But I have tried connecting the iPod after executing each of Steps 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 9 shown there and nothing has worked so far. Details follow:
--Went through the iPod Classic troubleshooting assistant--except I did not "reset" the iPod (because having all my "old" music available on the iPod has value to me).
--Restarted iPod Service.
--Restarted Apple Mobile Device Service.
--Verified that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed. There is no down arrow or question mark or other indication of problem with it.
--Tried two different USB ports (I assume that is what is meant by "change your iPod's drive letter"?).
--Temporarily disabled Norton Antivirus.
For some reason, there are 368 files and 60 folders in the Temp folder under my user name, and it looks like at least some are "read-only." Windows wouldn't let me delete or move the folder, even after I turned off Norton AntiVirus and closed the programs in the "Notification Area" that I could figure out how to close.
I'm very reluctant to get into messing with Config files or registry keys. And I have already tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes 11.4.1 so many times. I'm not sure what to do but am considering uninstalling all of the Apple products (again) and try installing an older version of iTunes. Or maybe I should try to install iTunes 11.4.1 on our Windows 8 laptop and see if the iPod will connect to that (although I really need to be able to sync to my desktop PC). Probably won't have time to do either for a few days--too many other things to do. But please let me know if there's something more that's relatively simple and low-risk I could try. Thanks again!
