ITunes is moving my music files when I play them

I am using iTunes 10.3.1.  I have all of my music in a folder on an external drive attached to my Airport Extreme Base Station.  I am having an awful time maintaining links between iTunes and the music files, but I understand that is because the drive keeps going to sleep and unmounting.  The big problem is that when I do play a file, iTunes actually MOVES the file and creates a new folder outside of the media folder.
Structure
Seagate Drive attached to AEBS
->Central iTunes Library
     ->Music
          ->Artist Name
               ->Album Name
                    ->Song File
After I play the song, I get this
Drive
->Central iTunes Library
     ->Music
     ->Artist Name (promoted to same level as the Music)
          ->Album Name
               ->Song File (No longer exists in the location described in the original structure- it has been moved)
Can anyone explain to me why this is occuring and how to stop it?
Thanks in advance

If by 'multiple' you mean 'duplicate', iTunes 6 has a "Show Duplicate Songs" option under the 'Edit' menu.
This won't delete duplicates, but it'll assist with locating them.

    Sound like something messed up somehow. Maybe you can consider reinstalling the drivers again? @28.86.2.0

  • How do I stop Quicktime from overriding music file downloads and playing them in the browser rather then letting me download them straight to my hardrive.

    I am trying to download a mastered track from a fellow musician.
    And up untill recently this wasen't a problem...
    It seems so stupid considering the ammount of people who use Macs for musical production.
    Can someone help please?!

    Thanks Michael. Apologies for the slow reply I was away for a bit (holiday blitz at work and visiting family madness etc.etc.) back now, I set both options you requested to "never " and retried the CMS software with no change.
    I do have progress of a sort though, as a test I took a separate test PC and put a clean install of Win7 on and loaded up the CMS software (it worked perfectly) and then took the version of ole32.dll off that machine and put it onto the computer I had built
    for her (using Linux) and...
    got a new error code. Darn I was so sure I had found a clever solution this time lol.
    Anyway now when the CMS fails it gives me a similar error but the offending module is "ntdll.dll" sooo... I tried taking the "working" version of ntdll.dll from the test box and moving it over (making sure to back up the existing ones
    first so I could put them back if needed) to her new PC and the PC would not boot.
    It seems to want the original versions of a few Dynamic Link Libraries and if I could somehow give it those while not breaking Win7 it should theoretically work seeing as it no longer errors with ole32.dll.
    ntdll.dll however seems necessary for Win7 to boot.
    So what I am wondering now is:
    Is there some way to have both versions of the DLL file in the system32 folder (bypassing the "cannot have two files with the exact same name in the same folder" thing) or rename the original DLL's something else and somehow make the CMS look for
    the new named versions so the system has the updated DLL's it needs to boot/run and the CMS has the old ones it wants to run or is there someway to have a self contained install of the CMS, say on a USB flash drive and give it it's own E:/windows/system32/needed
    dll's  path to the files it needs?
    Willing to try any other options or settings you may have come up with as well.
    Thanks again for your reply and my apologies for not answering sooner.

  • HT1725 My downloads on itunes show the songs downloaded however when you play them that is not the case. The download was not completed unsucessfully. What can I do?

    My recently purchased songs indicate the download was completed, however that is not the case. When you try to play the song it does not work. Any ideas to fix the problem?

    Hello,
    Here's how I got my songs to play correctly:
    1) Delete the songs that aren't playing from your iTunes library.
    2) Download the songs again from the iTunes Store for
    free. For information about downloading past purchases, see:

  • How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folder within the artist folder.

    How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folders within the artist folder and itunes moves the track/s whenever i try and load selected music to my ipod/iphone. I've tried to find some sort of preference to prevent this, but no joy? What am I missing?

    Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

  • Moved iTunes library to Vista PC but iTunes 'can't find music files'. Help!

    I'm running iTunes 7.1.1 on a new Vista PC and I followed the instructions on this support site for transferring the library using an iPod.
    All songs (with artwork) are showing in the new PC's iTunes library, BUT all have a '!' symbol to the left and refuse to play. It offers to let me find them, but this would take hours for the thousands of tracks. I've tried consolidating but to no effect. All the music files are in the iTunes library folder, so why can't iTunes access them?
    Can anyone help?

  • HT3842 Does iTunes store the original music file and copy it into a separate folder? If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library?

    Hi, on my last PC when transferring music to my new MacBook Pro i noticed i had about 6 duplicated of each song in every album i took hours in removing them.
    I Just wondered Does iTunes store the original music file and then copy it into a separate folder?
    If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library or vice versa. I didnt want to lose any music like i have some how managed to on my old computer.
    Or should i keep both files of it in the Music folder and also iTunes library folder?
    Which is best ?

    It does both at the same time.
    When you add files to iTunes, it copies them into /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder. The original file remains where it was.
    You can drag a file to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.
    This will add to iTunes and move it to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/.
    I keep a shortcut of this folder on my desktop then simply drag files to the shortcut to add to iTunes.
    Then there are no "extra" files around.

  • HT4914 Once I deleted my music files can I get them back via I cloud? I have Itunes match on.

    Once I deleted my music files can I get them back via I cloud? I have Itunes match on.

    I actually deleted my backup :-) That's the problem. But thanks.
    I've managed to get some back but via a slightly different method.
    Because the files weren't there, when I deleted them from my library they actually disappeared from the list.... So I created a new library (backed up my original one) and then synched that with Match so that all the files appeared. I'm just going through the ones I'm missing clicking 'download' and then when they're all back on my hard drive I'll revert to the previous Library which will hopefully pick up all of the recovered files.
    Bingo!

  • Itunes uploading my personal music files.....??

    has anyone caught itunes uploading their personal music files?? as i purchased and downloaded music from the australian itunes store they uploaded my music files......when i then went to burn my own music files in mp3 format, itunes identified "MY MP3 FILES" as itunes purchases and would not allow me to burn them off in mp3 format.....has anyone else encountered this problem and can i prevent this from happening again??
    please note; i am using 2 firewalls...however i have to allow access to itunes store in order to download my purchases.

    i should also mention mimico that these files were stored on my computer in mp3 format prior to me accessing itunes for the first time.it was after downloading my first purchase from itunes that i went to my music library to burn some mp3`s and realized my pre-existing files had been converted to m4p format whilst i downloaded my first purchase.it appeared to me that itunes had catalogued my library,compared it with what they had available and converted my previously stored mp3`s to m4p and claimed that i could not burn them to mp3 because they were 'prior itunes purchases and could not therefore be burnt in mp3 format.the issue here is not that they changed my files [i still have the original discs] but that they covertly entered my files whilst i purchased and downloaded and catalogued what i listen to, then, to make it worse they tampered with my files [i feel] in so much as they changed the file format to their store bought format........and hence denied me access to my own files in my perfered mp3 format

I try and refresh and go to the home page and nothing happens. I can sign into my account and the tabs for the itunes store pop up like they normally would when browsing the itunes store but when I click on one of them, it is a blank page. Is there a setting I need to change? Does it just take an extremely long time to load? Please help!!

  • I had all my iTunes music backed up onto a hard drive; but the hard drive was stolen along with all the files I backed up onto it. However, the songs I had in iTunes still show up (I just can't play them.) Would it let me get them back?

    I had all my iTunes music backed up onto a hard drive; but the hard drive was stolen along with all the files I backed up onto it. However, the songs I had in iTunes still show up (I just can't play them.) If I were to use iCloud, would it still take those songs and let me listen to them (and maybe re-download them?) Or am I out of luck?

    Open iTunes, go to the iTunes Store, and then go to Purchased on the right hand side under Music Quick Links.
    You can re-download all the songs, apps, or books you have previously purchased.
    I'm not sure if this is a requirement, but just in case, make sure you download the latest version of iTunes (v10.3) too.

    thanks. somehow after restoring it, ipod on my phone had another option to download them onto my phone (even though they would play so no idea) but then it allowed me to swipe the songs to delete them so they are finally gone from my phone!!!
