ITunes is not recognizing either of my iPhones any longer

I was originally having trouble with the new iPhone 5 that I got for my wife.  iTunes would not regonize it at all, even though Windows recognizes that something is plugged into the USB port.  I reinstalled iTunes per the article that has you remove all traces and reinstall in a particular order.  I have also turned off all my my firewall settings, restarted AMDS, and tried different cables.  After I put it in restore mode per directions from Apple Support via Chat, Itcould not restore it due to receiving an error "1611".  Sooooo, I had to drive 1.5 hours to the Apple Store in Richmond to get it to restorde.  Now that that part is done, I still can't get my computer's iTunes to recognize the device.
Additionally frustrating, iTunes was working for my own iPhone previously, but when I deleted it out of the device backups in Preferences, it stopped recognizing it.  What the heck is going on that it won't recognize my devices any longer?
Is there a list of known software or other conflicts in Window's 7 with iOS and iTunes that I could check out?

Did you follow the steps in the link below:

iTunes 12 doesn't see my 2 devices wirelessly OR when I plug in via USB.  I have never had this problem before with earlier versions of iTunes.  HELP!!

    Hi jandianajones,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  What devices are you trying to sync with iTunes?  Were you able to sync them before updating to iTunes 12?  The resource below will provide some basic steps to try if iTunes does not recognize your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't appear under Devices in iTunes after you connect it to your Mac, refer to the troubleshooting suggestions below.
This article is for OS X. If you're using a Windows PC, see what to do if your Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows.
Follow these steps to resolve your issue:
If you haven't connected your iOS device to this computer before, unlock the device and tap Trust. Learn more about the Trust This Computer alert.
    Restart your iOS device.
    Restart your Mac.
Make sure that your Mac meets the minimum system requirements for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Install software updates on your Mac.
If an iTunes update is available, apply the update.
Check USB connections. iOS devices need USB 2.0 to work properly. If you're not sure your Mac has USB 2.0 ports, check the computer's specifications.
Disconnect other USB devices and connect your device directly to a USB port on your Mac.
    Try another USB cable.

Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

  • Hi all, i just updated my iphone 3gs with 5.0 ios version and now i cannot configure the iphone with it because itunes is not recognizing my iphone

hi all, i just updated my iphone 3gs with 5.0 ios version and now i cannot configure the iphone with it because itunes is not recognizing my iphone

Contacts are NOT part of the iTunes backup.  If you had read the User Guide when you got your phone, you would have learned that Apple recommends you synch your contacts for safekeeping to your computer (Outlook, Address Book) or a cloud service.  Using the phone as your only source of your contacts is foolish as the phone can easily be lost, damaged, stolen, or the data become corrupt.
If you've been using your phone as strongly recommended, your contacts are safe and sound on your computer or cloud service ready to be synched back to your phone.  Of course, you should be backing up your computer regularly as well.
If you haven't been doing this, your contacts are likely gone.
