You don't.
Purchased is a smart playlist based on items you purchased.

You need iTunes 10.0 or greater to update your phone...iTunes isn't confused at all. If you're on a Mac, you'll need OS X 10.5.8 or greater to update iTunes to 10.0 or greater.

  • ITunes issues - corruption, confusion, replication,

    Hi,
I'm sure this is really simple and over time i have completed complicated the issue and i just need some clarity.... here goes....
    SET UP
Synology Nas with a share on it called iTunes (for the purpose of this lets call it the U:\)
Desktop pc running windows 7 ultimate
mac book pro retina with osx
    Apple TV
    iPad mini
    iPad 2
    iPhone 5s
    iPod nano (6th Gen)
    History:
A while ago I decided to move my iTunes library onto my nas drive to be able to access it from my laptop and apple tv etc. Somehow the library file or database corrupted and wiped half of my playlists, songs etc. I ended up manually sorting everything out (TWICE!!). this also wiped my iphone backup and subsequently my iphone when i plugged it in next.
After purchasing my mac book a few weeks ago I was hesitant to mess around with a working library but today I took the plunge. and wish I hadn't. Sudenly all my playlists could not find the associated tracks either on my pc or macbook. Fortunately i have a backup library file so i copied and renamed it and all seems ok. until i try to point to that file on my macbook at which point it starts updating the library and off we go again.
How I add files to iTunes
Now i know this isnt the right way to go about using iTunes but its how i first started using it years ago (iphone 3 days) and since then its grown and grown and i havent been able to sort it out. so this is how i add music to my library and playlists:
U:\Manual copy\iTunes library folder - DO NOT DELETE OR MOVE!! - I place the mp3 in this folder
Then in iTunes File > Add file (select the file, sorted by date order so its the first one in the list, and add)
In songs, select the file, right click and add to the playlists i want it in.
This essentially means i have two copies of the file right? assuming iTunes creates a backup or a copy somewhere?
    iTunes Settings:
    My Current settings:
The library file is located in: U:\iTunes Media Folder:
My Current File Structure (on the iTunes share)
This just looks like a mess now and i have no idea whats what any more. ive expanded the folders i think are relevent.
    So what am i after?
ideally i want to wipe the whole **** lot and start fresh. But my folder sizes are so huge im wary of loosing so much music, and having to rebuild 170 odd playlists - I setup albums as individual playlists and have different playlists for moods, genre, etc. Folder sizes:
    U:\iTunes Media Folder\music - 81.2GB, 11,886 files
    U:\iTunes Media Folder\manual copy\iTunes library folder - DO NOT DELETE OR MOVE!! - 32.5GB, 4503 files
i can see from Songs in iTunes that i have 11,596 songs added to the library. sorting by name shows that i have at least 3 copies of each song somehow!? ium guessing that happend when the original corruption occured and was a result of me panicking and trying to fix it.
So what is the easiest way to fix this? i really do not want to spend hour upon hour of starting a whole new library and adding each song one by one, or having to rebuild playlists (which are on all my mobile devices except the iPad mini).
im also extremely weary of loosing my iphone backups and connecting my phone to itunes again incase i loose everything.
Can anyone give me some clear advice on how i should go about fixing this please? i tried looking through the community but i just got more confused.
if you need any further info / screenshots please ask.
    Many thanks.
    Hiten

Thanks for the reply, i double checked and everything on both pc and mac is set right:
both are opening the same .itl file
both have the media folder set to <NAS>/iTunes/iTunes Media
both have the two check boxes ticked (keep folder organised and copy) <------ could this be the problem?
So this is exactly what happens step by step, after having just restored from a backup:
    PC
First I open iTunes on the pc, play some tracks - all fine.
    Exit iTunes
Wait a minute or two whilst anything saves etc (just incase)
    MAC
open Itunes on the mac (its already pointing to the right library)
it says "updating library" - really quick - maybe 10 seconds
all the songs look fine, until i try to play one.
the song could not be found, would you like to locate it? - click no.
    Exit iTunes
    wait a minute
    PC Again
open iTunes on the pc again
"updating iTunes library" - takes a while - a lot longer than it took on the mac - approx 4-5 minutes
now all of the tracks have a "!" next to them
    exit iTunes
    wait a minute
    Mac Again
open iTunes on the mac again
"updating iTunes library" - really quick again
now all the songs have the "!" next to them too.
    exit iTunes
    restore from backup again
Not really sure why its doing that to be honest.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Hiten

  • First time Ipod/Itunes user is confused

    OK!
I have this Ipod I believe its an Ipod mini as you call it. I just bought the charger and the USB cord the other day and I have very little knowledge about this thing it just sort of fell into my lap.
I was told install this Itunes thing to get it going but when I try to install it I keep getting this message: "There is a problem with the Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vender."
Really confused by that. I tried calling their support hotline but it isnt open till 9am here.
    Any help is most appreciated.

  • ITunes MANUAL SYNC confusion

I'll start with the option to "manually manage music and videos" (and APPS).
What exactly does this mean - manually?
To me, manually managing music would be to select the songs that you want to sync, but that is available as a second option in this tab - to "sync only checked songs".
And if you pick this "manual" option, then you loose the option to "sync music" from the music tab. So - what does this mean?
Also, if you deselect this option while your iPhone is connected, you get a message that says "Are you sure that you do not want to manually manage music and videos on your iPhone? All existing content on the iPhone will be replaced with content from your iTunes library"??? What exactly does that mean - that if I deselect, then everything will be removed from my phone and replaced with all songs that I have in iTunes - including apps, contacts, photos, etc.?
Makes no sense whatsoever. I would have to play around with this for a week before figuring this out completely because every time I pick a different option to see what it does, I have to wait for the whole syncing process again. So at this point, I'm not going to worry about that option (although it's aggravating that I cannot figure it out), and instead move on to the "sync only checked songs option".
There have been too many times to count where my iOS device was just completely wiped because the prompts are just so confusing.

    jjjsweep wrote:

What exactly does this mean - manually?
It means you must drag music and videos from iTunes to the iDevice (on the left side of iTunes). iTunes will not sync any of  them.
Also, if you deselect this option while your iPhone is connected, you get a message that says "Are you sure that you do not want to manually manage music and videos on your iPhone? No. It means it will autosync videos and music. If you deselect, it should keep the videos/music that is already on there.
Photos, contacts and apps will not be affected (FYI: contacts and photos are not in iTunes. iTunes is simply used to sync them).
I create playlists and sync only thos eplaylists. Then add/delete from those playlist to add/delete from the iDevice.
Also, you can manually drag videos/music even when autosyncing.
If you select the Music tab and scroll to the bottom, it will list items you have manually added.
and instead move on to the "sync only checked songs option".
Personally, I would not recommend using this to select what to sync.
The only items I uncheck are for items I never/rearly want on the iDevice such as Christmas music and old audio books.
I use playlists and Sync only checked items but most items remain checked.

  • ITunes sales number confusion - more updates than app downloads

    Hi,
We recently released initial version of an application and one application update - both in 2013. When I look at (iTunes Sales and Trends) download (Apps) and update figures from 2013, I see 28k Apps but 42k Updates.
I thought that Apps are all downloads done by the iTunes users and Updates are updates done by these users.
I have been looking in the Guide for the Sales and Trends, FAQ and doing web search, but so far found nothing which could clear up the confusion.
Is there a definition what exactly Downloads and Update numbers in the Sales and Trends means?
    Thanks,
    Jan

That sounds like a classic case of the Podcast provider limiting the number of simultaneous downloads to one only. As I asked the original poster; are these Podcasts from the same programme, or even from the same radio station network?

Again, classic symptoms of a Podcast provider limiting the number of simultaneous downnloads. Although this isn't proof, that it's the provider, the question needs to be asked.
I find it extrememly unlikely that cmhogan's suggestion would give you any different results, because the request is simply made in a different way, the queue is the same.

  • Hello, I have a Dutch bought iMac but live in Sweden my ID will not allow me to shop in Itunes  and this confuses me, my iTunes is in Dutch, but my Swedish Itunes ID and Apple ID does not work in the Dutch store...only thing I wnat to do is to be able to

    Hello everybody,
I bought my iMac in Holland in 2009 but I live in Sweden, I made an Apple id here and it works for the Apple Store, but it doesn't work with Itunes as I have my itunes in Dutch of course and am right away transferred to the Swedish iTunes and am told I can't buy music because I live in Sweden and am directed to itunes sweden on top of that I am not such a Swedish speaking or reading person and now I am stuck:(, I can't do anything with music and such, does anyone of you out there know how to solve this problem?
It's a worldwide problem because as soon as a site knows your ipaddress it right away transfers you to the site in the country you live in, idiotic to my view, we have open borders, many people living in countries that they were not born in, many prefering to have their computers in their native language and then meet problems!
    Have a nice day/evening all:)
    greetings from

    Not just a language issue...
"Although you can browse the iTunes Store in any country without being signed in, you can only purchase content from the iTunes Store for your own country. This is enforced via the billing address associated with your credit card or other payment method that you use with the iTunes Store. You can use the iTunes Store in all countries of which you’re a resident, but you’ll either need a separate iTunes Store account for each one, or you’ll need to continually be switching your billing information on your single account. Generally, it’s simpler just to set up an alternative account for these situations."

  • Sharing iTunes account is confusing my storage settings.

I share the same iTunes library as my dad. He's really into his music and so in the library has 1332 songs that cover around 5000 minutes. Of course, I don't really like his music but I have my own music within that library too. When I sync my phone to my computer, I select the songs I want to be synced into my phone in order not to get any of my dad's music. But all of a sudden, my dad's music is on my phone but it is not 'downloaded' it just has a little cloud on it. This is quite irritating because now my phone is telling me I have no free storage because my 'Audio' section is so full with songs that I have not downloaded onto my phone from iTunes. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
We have not subscribed to iTunes match so it is not that issue, and I have turned off 'Show All Music' on my settings and the songs are no longer on my phone now but they are still taking up my storage?
How can i fix this, somebody please help!!

You should each have your own user account on the computer. Log into the computer using your own account. You will have your own unique iTunes library. That will prevent the two of you from getting things mixed up and otherwise cross contaminated.

  • ITunes is SO confused: refuses to play 89 of my 1000+ songs

I backed up my iTunes library to DVD-ROM and had to reformat and reload my entire computer (Windows XP). Reloaded entire computer and reinstalled iTunes 8ish. Restored iTunes library from backup.
(It isn't smart enough to restore all of my artwork, only some; and it forgot which songs were checked and which weren't. Different problems, but poor functionality nevertheless.)
Now, iTunes refuses to play 89 of my 1000+ songs, saying my computer isn't authorized to play them. Stupid, since it's apparently authorized to play all the rest of them. It says I have to authorize the computer with an old AOL ID I apparently used to purchase those songs. Although, many of them were not purchased from the iTunes store, but imported from CDs I own.
So I go through the steps it's forcing me to take. I sign on to the old account, at which point it tells me I have to upgrade to an Apple ID or I can't go any further. Fine. I already have an Apple ID, and there's no way to inform iTunes of that. So I go through the motions to create yet another new Apple ID. Says the request cannot be completed. No explanation.
So I'm stuck. It still refuses to play those tunes, which played fine before I reloaded and restored the computer and library. Now it thinks I have two computers authorized to play iTunes music, and I only have one. Yes, one. It may have been reloaded, but iTunes should be smart enough to figure out that it's the same one. Duh.
So I'm stuck not being able to play music I own and am authorized to play, and it refuses to allow me to transfer or reorient my songs to my normal Apple ID.
Is there anyone who can fix this? I hope I don't have to tell you how ridiculous this problem is, and how iTunes/Apple is forcing me to take steps it won't allow me to take.
    Thanks.

You can Prevent automatic syncing one time, without changing settings:  Open iTunes. Then, as you connect iPhone to your computer, press and hold Command and Option keys (on a Mac) until you see iPhone appear in the iTunes sidebar.
To load all the stuff from your phone, you'll need to use a 3rd-party uitility. Here are 2 that will work:

  • ITunes Match error - confused

    Hi folks
Just subscribed to this new service (in the UK) and it's frustrating me. I eventually got it to finish its initial process (had to stop & start a few times as it seemed to hang during uploading) but I have a lot of files (3,852 out of 24,934 items) showing 'error' and 94 files showing 'waiting' in the iCloud Status. I've tried re-uploading them using the context menu but it continues to say 'error' with no further description.
To make it worse, these files are now missing from my iPhone library - I turned on iTunes match (on the iPhone) before I reaslised half the files had errors, but having turned it off again and re-synced, the files are still missing from the iPhone. By missing, I mean that the tracklisting for an album shows the track, but it is dimmed out and cannot be played.
Most of these error files are on normal mainstream albums, where 9 out of 10 tracks are uploaded but one shows an error.
What are the possible reasons for the error, and how do I get my music back on my iPhone?
    TIA
    James

There was another user here with a similar problem a few days ago - are ALL your "uploaded" files failing?  If so, then you might have a pattern.
I had suggested to them to confim that their ISP or your local router isn't blocking uploads, for some reason - I would suggest the same thing here.  Start with a non-iTunes upload like dropbox or megaupload, just to ensure that those work.  Then move onto iTM testing - not thousands of files, I would just create a new library and test one or two of those failed files - there has to be a reason for it.   Also if you are a Windows user you might want to turn off all anti-virus and firewall products, just as a test temporarily, to see if the uploads start working.
Lastly, make sure that the files themselves are compaitble with iTM - for example, I know that Vorbis files cannot be uploaded.  Probably not a likely problem here, but I don't know your setup so you want to eliminate that as a factor.

  • ITunes takes sooo long to update iPod

So why does it take my iPod so freaking long to update? I may add an album or two, along with some artwork for some older albums, but when I update it to my iPod, it takes hours.
iTunes will eventually state "OK TO DISCONNECT" while the iPod says "DO NOT DISCONNECT".
It won't eject if I click on the arrow next to my name, so I've been yanking the cord from the base.
My iPod is an 80GB video. My third iPod. Is it just me or is iTunes/iPod going waay down in reliability?

  • ITunes Store purchase confusion!

All - if you make a purchase in the store on once PC will you lose it if you get a new PC and you sync you iPhone? I know you lose any CDs you have imported but I wasnt sure about iTunes Store purchases? Thank you!

You will need to copy those purchases from the old PC to the new one before you dispose of the old PC. Otherwise you will indeed lose the content. You can transfer over your entire iTunes library so that you don't have to import your CDs again. While a bit old, these user tips still apply:

  • Apple TV 2, iTunes HD shows confusing surround audio channels?

I have recently noticed a problem with iTunes purchased TV shows, in that the front left/right audio tracks are coming out of the surround speakers (and the front sides are quiet, but the center plays back normally). This has happened with Justified and Clone Wars.
It's rare and if I restart the Apple TV the problem goes away and everything plays back normally. I've also observed that if I restart the AV receiver, that fixes the problem (Apple TV detects that the other end of the HDMI cable is off-line and it pauses the show).
Has anyone else seen this problem? I would be happy to blame the receiver, I guess , but my Blu-ray player never exhibits this behavior - only the Apple TV 2 and it seems to occur only with iTunes purchased, HD TV shows.
    Thanks.

Update: turned out to be a problem with the AVR, which is now at a service center being repaired.

  • I am sooo confused...

Ok, I program, have written HTML nd CSS. But am soo confused by iWeb. I just upgraded along with iWork. This program has no freekin open command in the file menu. when I click save, it doesn't ask where. I want different sites. Not one default. If it's one site, how do I get it to link to my existing .mac site so I can add pages and see pages already up there? All I want right now is to be able to post a few iWork Numbers spreadsheets to help people that have questions. I tried File Sharing template online, but it doesn't recognize .Numbers as a file type but as a folder. So I can't link to files in that manner. I want something like that file sharing on iWeb. How?
    thanks alot,
    Jason

    HI Jason,
Have you already tried creating a hyperlink and linking to the file in iWeb?
    From the iWeb help:
    To create a hyperlink:
Select the text or object you want to turn into a hyperlink.
If the Link Inspector isn’t open, click Inspector in the toolbar (or choose View > Show Inspector), and then click the Link Inspector button.
In the Link Inspector, select “Enable as a hyperlink,” and then choose an option from the Link To pop-up menu:
One of My Pages: Opens another page in any of your iWeb websites. Choose the page from the Page pop-up menu.
An External Page: Opens any page for which you know the website address. Type the address in the URL field. To make the link open a new page (and leave the current page open), select “Open link in new window.”
A File: Downloads a file to the visitor’s computer. (The file is part of your website; visitors won’t have access to your computer.)
An Email Message: Opens a new email message containing the email address and subject you specify.
Here are other ways to create hyperlinks on a page:

Drag a page from the sidebar (on the left side of the iWeb window) to create a link to the page.

Drag a URL from the address field in Safari to create a link to that page on the web. If you drag the URL to an image, the image becomes the hyperlink.

Drag a file from the Finder to create a link to the file.
