"iTunes is updating..." but it's frozen!

I have just acquired my first iPhone as a hand-me down from my son. Connected to iTunes via my computer running Mavericks 10.9.2. I started the process of updating the software to iOS 6.1.3. The progress bar has now been frozen at about two thirds progress for the last 3 - 4 hours. I've disconnected everything from my computer except for the mouse, keyboard and of course the iPhone itself.
I don't want to disconnect the phone or turn it off in case I do some irrevocable harm. Can anyone help.

ITunes says updating but computer freezes instead

Whenever I plug in my iPod to be updated these days, iTunes says it's updating but eventually gives me the spinning beachball of death instead. The program would then freeze up, sometimes causing other programs to crash as well. Unplugging the iPod seems immediately to solve the problem, and afterwards the iPod seems to be all right as well.
I've had this problem before, and got around it by erasing the entire iPod; a few months later, I'm unwilling to have to do the same thing. Anyone with help would be greatly appreciated!

FINALLY got my iTunes to update but now it won't open, the error message is "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read b/c it was created by a newer version of iTunes.

This is getting irritating. I finally get the update to install now I get this new error message, I don't get it. I have Windows 7, all the updates have been installed on that, but I can't get the stupid iTunes to open. Seriously annoying! Can anyone help me?

I don't know why this error occurs, unless you have attempted to downgrade iTunes.
This method should get you up and running again.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

You have to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change within an existing Operating System. Such as the .8 added to 10.5.
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
10.5 code was written to be able to run on both Power PC and Intel. 10.6 has completely rewritten code and only runs on Intel Macs.
You have to upgrade to 10.6.8 to be able to download iTunes 10.7. The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available at this time from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list. The App Store which is required to download 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion is part of the 10.6.6 update.
If you wait to long and they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

Itunes is updated but i cant install new ios

when i hit 'check for updates' it tells me there is a new IOS available but i have to update itunes (i did this already)
so i hit okay, download it. but when i do i only have the options to repair or remove itunes.
so i repaired it, and if i go into about itunes it confirms that i do indeed have the latest version of itunes but i still cannot get the new ios.

You Mac is asking for your computers user name and password. If you are updating iTunes, then all you have to do is run software updates on your Mac. Go to the drop down menu  > Software Update… and then it will download the updates for your computer. As long as you are running at least 10.6.8, you should be able to get it. If you a version below that, then you will need to upgrade your version of the operating system to get the latest version of iTunes.

Itunes has updated but..what updated? i thought paypal was being added.FAIL

i might not be very a good at using computers but and for a huge company what a failure. i read that i can now use paypal so i updated cause i have like $4.96 to pay off and well i guess no money for them cause i cant pay any other way unless i use paypal. the visa card is out dated and has been dropped and no longer use-able. please if someone can tell me how to get paypal on i would be very greatful.

Downloaded itunes 7 update but it cannot find the installation file

I have had itunes installed and being used for about 3 years. I have the apple update utility loaded so i get notifaction of the lastest versions as the become available.
Following the most recent upgrade my itunes failed to load as it is telling me it cannot find the installation package as it is located on a network drive. (this is a standalone pc).
I cant open the version that was installed as it tells me i can only open installed items. To add insult to injury i cant remove it or install an earlier version.
Basically i cant use my ipod as i cant open, remove or re-install itunes. To say i am annoyed by this is an understatement.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

with one of those, let's try the following procedure.
first, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. if it goes, good. if it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to itunes.
next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to clear any existing itunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC.

next, use the the following document as a guide for manual removal of leftover itunes and quicktime program files:

now try another itunes install. does it go through properly this time?

HT4623 I have just tried to update my iPhone 4S to the recent IOS but it has frozen in the middle of the restore. Any idea how I can get it to restore fully?

I have an iPhone 4S which was due the upgrade to it's IOS.
I have tried to update it through iTunes in the normal way but it has frozen.
I am using the lead that came with it and I have never had this issue before although my girlfriend who has the same phone has. It took her about 20 attempts to finally get it to work. This seems a bit unnecessary.

ITunes says updating files on my iPod, but podcasts do not show up.

I have an iPod Classic 80g. It is set to manually manage files and disk use is enabled. Recently I had to reformat my PC and reinstall the OS and other programs. Prior to this I was able to click and drag the video podcast I subscribe to directly to my iPod. Now, after the reformat, when I drag the new podcasts to my iPod, iTunes says its updating files my files, but when its finished there are no files added to my iPod. When I try to add it again, it no longer says it's updating, but still nothing happens. I have checked in all available folders incase it was adding to the wrong place, but it is nowhere to be found except fot being temporarily in the recently added folded. All other media types like movies and music import without a problem to my iPod.
Please help.

I tried it and it worked. I am not tech savy, but I am in the process of downloading all of the other shows this way. Once I entered in the url in the "sync podcasts", it then allowed me to place all of the newly downloaded podcasts under podcasts. I played around for a while, so not sure I can walk you through it, but it will work.
Once I had synced the podcast, I went into podcast, dbl clicked on the original subscribed podcast show, that brought up the other shows and I downloaded them, one by one. Am trying a mass download, but cannot seem to do that.

Yeah, you have to subscribe to a podcast and select "Sync podcasts" for it to show up under "Podcasts" on the iPod. Even podcasts downloaded through iTunes won't show up here if you don't subscribe/sync but just put them in a playlist.

I have tried many times today to install iTunes 10.5 in order to update to iOS5 on my Iphone 4 however it just wont work. I have a MacBook Pro and when I use the software update it says that I have already downloaded iTunes 10.5 but when I go to install it and it says it is writing the files and the bluw bar is working its way across the page and then becomes very very slow and and at the last millimetre it seems to just hang there and do nothing. I even left if like this for several hours and nothing progressed. I have since tried to update via the iTunes program and the same problem happens. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

by "repair" I mean I went to the control panel, option - programs and features, and in the list of all my installed programs I selected "Apple Software Update". On top of the screen you find the options Uinstall, Change and Repair. I clicked the repair button and that did the trick. After the repair I could uninstall the program. I also uninstalled iTunes, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support en Bonjour, thus all Apple programs. Then I installed iTunes 10.5 again and everything went fine.

Are you sure you have a 4g/3g iPod? If you don't have a camera, it's definitely not 4G. If it has no camera and is 8 or 16 Gb it is a 2G and can't go beyond 4.2.1.

My husband and I are using the same iTunes account on all mac & pc computers, but the libraries are different on each machine. We always manually manage our music (no auto sync). iTunes is up to date on the PCs. My husband uses our joint iTunes account on his pc, but once again, has a different collection in his library from those on the other machines. He can't load any music from his PC to his iphone 4. I can load music from my mac library to my iphone 4s, but cannot load from my pc library to my iphone 4s. How can I switch my main library that it syncs with from the mac to the pc?

If you are the only user on your computer you probably don't have multiple user accounts set up and can disregard that. If you are using iTunes 11 go to View>Show Sidebar. Now see if your iPad appears under Devices on the left side when you connect it. If it does, click on the name of your iPad on the left side and your iTunes sync settings options will appear in folders with tabbed headings to the right.
