ITunes just wont start

Soon after loading v 5.0.1, my computer stopped being able to open up iTunes. I get a message offering to send an error report to MS, but nothing else happens.
I have Norton AV installed, and I think I upgraded recently, too, and I wonder if that creates a conflict.
To solve the problem, I have reinstalled several times, both online and from the disk that came with my iPod, and I have system-restored several times as well.
Any info to help?

I actually fixed it using the advice from a post back in August or September. I used keywords 'wont start' and found a post telling me to uninstall itunes, then QT, then take out 4 files from windows 32, then to reinstall. The only problem is that un-installing dumped the entire music library, which I'm slowly restoring from the 'my music' library (which I did not delete.)
Anyone know if this step can be avoided????

    Hi, ATPMolloy.
I certainly understand your frustration and will do my best to help.  I see you have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes with no change in results.  I have attached an article below that specifically troubleshoots this issue that you are experiencing.

  • After installing Mountain Lion, my iTunes app wont start, why ???

After installing Mountain Lion, my iTunes app wont start, why ??? It bounces in the dock, then "Unexpectedly Quirs"

    Let's keep it simple...
    1) Make a new user - the steps are in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199
    2) Log into that user, open iTunes, agree, etc. - it will probably work
    3) If it does, it tells us that iTunes (the program) is fine but it's encountering something unexpected
    4) Go back to your user, and try to open iTunes while holding option and making a new library - like suggested in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
    5) Your iTunes will be empty. This is ok. Your files are not touched by this process.
    6) If iTunes doesn't quit when loading an empty library, you could try rebuilding the iTunes Library as Apple documents in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
    7) If iTunes does quit, it could be trying to grab something - like photo information to sync to your iPad - and that's where it finds the unexpected data. Maybe try moving the iPod Photo Cache? http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1324 should guide you for how to do that.
If you tell us whether it is library-specific, user-specific, or system-wide (happens in both users), we could maybe give you better advice on what's going on.'
If the new user has the same behavior, maybe remove the SC Info folder - there are not many system-wide files iTunes touches. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1389 covers how to remove that invisible folder.
iTunes uses /Applications/iTunes.app, /Users/Shared/SC Info, ~/Music/iTunes/ and ~/Library/Preferences/ and a bunch of other files. I don't think focusing on /Applications/iTunes/app or other system-wide files is going to be as effective as knowing whether the issue is system-wide or user-specific.
I hope this helps and feel free to reply if this is all confusing.

  • Qosmio X500 - Sometimes my laptop just wont start

I have had this laptop for a couple of weeks, and sometimes it just wont start up when I press the power on button, or any other button.
What I have to do, is remove the battery, then put it back in. It then starts.
    I wonder why?

    Hi back,
Today first I called the technical support in Switzerland. _They told me that the problems are unknown_ and *they never heared* about this!
They told me that I have to bring the notebook to Zuerich or send it with the postal service! but that is unbelievable. Sending it could destroy the package and this is a risk I don't want to take for sure.
I told them that in their forum there are threaths with people writing about the same problem! But the are not interested in watching /reading it, Almost it seams so.
Then I called Toshiba Switzerland.... they said that they don't know about this problem (same thing than the support told). But this guy told me that a new Bios release is planned soon! but a few weeks ago they brought one (rel. 1.4). They didn't say anything which features or bugfixes wil be implemented there. but I have an idea.....
when I installed the whoile thing, the Toshiba Tempre tool said that I should update the bluetooth and the *bios* release! could that be the fatal desaster? *Tomorrow* I will call the support guy again and he has to help me to downgrade the BIOS version. I am not sure but I feel that it almost *could* help.
In addition (I don't know whether that is a result from the same problrm) there are warning tones all the way when I write something. SOmetimes there are a tripple tone (Piep, Piep, Piep) and sometimes single tones or two.
A lot of tones are when I type space bar but its not only the space bar. Where can I search for the meaning of those tones?
Any ideas or news from you guys?
I'll write as soon as I have news!
Cheers and please call to those guys to. Only so we can reach a reaction.

  • Itunes just wont detect my new ipod nano

my window xp just wont detect my ipod neither will itunes , i had an ipod shuffle before would this be causing the problem??? plzzzzzzzzzz sum1 help

Now, let's try assigning your shuffle a different drive letter.
Disconnecting your new nano, proceed with these steps:
1 - Don't plug in your Shuffle yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel windows opened, connect your iPod to the computer.
5 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).
For more details, see this Support article: Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive
Then, disconnect your shuffle, and reconnect your nano to your computer.
Is it now recognized in My Computer, iTunes, etc. or not?

  • I updated and now safari just wont start!

    so heres the deal:
    ibook 1ghz 14", 512 ram, 30gb, X 10.3.9.
So I updated to the latest security update, and now safari wont start - the icon just bounces once in the dok and dissapears.
I tried resetting the application bit using the chmod command, but to no avail.
So i redownloaded the 1.2 update, with no sucess.
I deleted safari (doh!) and tried to install from safari 1.0, but apparently that is not possible to install under my version of os x.
Im really reaching the end of my tether now - all my bookmarks etc are in safari - and whilst I can use the other multitude of browsers on my system Id rather be on safari (excuse the pun).
    Please please please help me!!!
Edit: Just tried to use software update, and that wont launch either :S
Edit: just found a related article after looking around the boards - please forgive me for not looking hard enough initially.
And for anyone having the same problem, check out: Saxman, "Post Security Update: NO Safari, Mail, Sftw Update, ...", 02:24am Aug 17, 2005 CDT
Edit: Well I tried the steps outlined in the above link - with no luck.
So I guess im still stuck & on checking them Im afraid to say that many of my apps wont launch, mail, safari, limewire, Software update to name but a few...
    any thoughts?
Edit: Well I guess I just didnt pay enough attention to the advice in the post linked above.
Where the instruction tells you to remove the webkit from within the system folder's library I was actually removing it from the global library on the root of the hard drive! :P
Ah well, all is fixed now - and infact my ibook seems to be running faster, and safari is definately running faster now
    Tally Ho!

It's not only Safari, it's every programm! The function is called "Resume" and will launch back the applications in the same way as you leaved them.
You can change it back in
System Preferences > General > Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps

    How can I fix this?

    many thanks.
Some questions aimed at narrowing in on possible culprits.
    (1) Does your QuickTime Player launch, or do you get an error message of some kind when you try to launch that?
    (2) Try (by way of experiment) disabling the BonJour Service.
In your Start Menu, right-click Computer and select "Manage".
    Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Maximise the window to better see what's going on.)
Right-click the BonJour Service and select "Properties". In the "General" tab, set Start-up type to "Disabled".
Restart the PC, and try launching iTunes again. Does it launch this time?
If iTunes launches with the BonJour Service disabled, by any chance do you have a recent version of IOBit's Advanced SystemCare utility installed on the PC?

  • I t just wont start...

My mac mini wont start at all.
When I power up, all I get is a grey screen with a
small finder icon in the middle of the screen that
flashes into a question mark.......what's up with that?
Maybe to make matters worse, I inserted the "Intall/recovery disk"
    but nothing happens.
    To recap.
Flashing icon on a grey screen.
power off has to be done manually.
    install disk is stuck inside
    HELP ME PLEASE

That screen with the arrow in a circular shape and right-pointing arrow is the boot loader screen. Any valid MacOS volumes will appear there. The watch symbol typically spins for a few minutes as the system searches all possible locations, but if it shows no internal drive then either the drive has failed or corrupted, or MacOS on it is damaged. If you have inserted the correct install disk for that system and it doesn't show in that screen, then the install disk may be faulty, the optical drive may have failed, or the interface for the drives may have failed.
In the event of a hardware failure, it's worth trying a PMU reset (G4 minis) or an SMC reset (Intel systems). Don't use the wrong one of these procedures.
To reset the PMU (G4 minis - 2 USB ports on the rear)
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    -Wait 10 seconds.
-Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
-Let go of the power button.
-Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
To reset the SMC on an Intel mini (4 USB ports on the rear):
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
If that doesn't help, make sure the install disk is the right one for the system - eject it by holding the left mouse button down during power up, and check it is the correct one for your mini - installers from other models will not work.

  • ITunes just wont quit!

Hey yall.. Im having this really annoying problem thats a pain in the @$$. I try to quit iTunes as normal, iTunes --> Quit and after maybe 5 seconds it starts right up again! I also noticed that on the dock the little triangle next to the iTunes flickers off for a milisecond and then iTunes reopens. It often takes me quite a few tries (up to 10 or 15) to get it to quit completely.
i tried to quit from the dock and i even tried quitting and killing the app from Activity monitor and the terminal. This only started happening after I updated to iTunes 5.0. It justs insists on staying open!
Is anyone else having this problem?
    Please help!
    -Alex

    Alex hello,
You have something running that wants to access iTunes ... turn that off 1st and then quit... activity monitor will show active processes... terminal line top -u also
likely candidates are iTunes widget from dashboard, konfabulators, plug-ins, other programs and scripts etc.
    take care Alex .... TP

  • Macbook Pro just wont start?

Ive had my MBP for little over a week and everything was working fine. A few days ago I tried turning it on and the LED light on the button that flips the screen up came on, I could hear everything inside spinning around and whatever so that all seemed fine but I couldnt hear any sounds that you normally hear when you turn it on (Like that big DUMMM when the apple logo appears) and the screen just stays black. So its as though ti starts, but just before the screens about to turn on, everything stops. The usual reaction kicked in, i s* myself! Considering this MBP was bought for me for my course and it needs to be handed in at the end so it is not technically mine. I held the power button and turned it off, pressed the power button and turned it on again and it worked. So i didnt think much of it. Then it became more frequent and last night I was on safari and safari just crashed, i tried force quit and then my MBP just switched off. I tried to turn it on and the same thing happened, only it hasnt switched back on no matter how hard I try. Its been broke since last night and I need it preferably for tommorow morning.
Ive looked and there seems to be similar problems, but they all get solutions like Hold the power button, hold cntl, cmd, p and r and whatever but that doesnt help me. Nothing happens!
Also I placed a DVD in my MBP to check if the optical drive was working fne and it succesfully swalloed it without giving it back and now I dont know how to get that out. Ive tried turning it on and holding the mouse button (even though its a trackpad) and nothing works.
    HELPPPP?!
Would anybody reccomend the genius bar? Plus does it cost? Do I need proof the MBP is mine because all the documents are at the place where I take my course.

I dont have the installer disk, its all at where I do my course... The only thing I have is my laptop and power lead. I was hoping I could et it fixed myself so its like it never happened and it can be forgotton about. Sounds a bit wierd but you know... Saves the ear ache.
And i meant does the genius bar cost? Sorry for the inconvenience. (Spelling :S)
EDIT: The cmd, option o and f keys dont work.

  • ITunes dowload wont start

I want to install iTunes 11 on my second laptop but the download doesnt start. When i click download now the web page changes and says thankyou for downloading iTunes but the download never starts.
I have cleared cache and tried downloading using different browsers but still i cannot download iTunes 11.
    Any advice ?
    Thanks

I don't have a solution to your problem, and please don't think I'm being a jerk with my reply, but...before you go to the trouble of jumping through whatever hoops you need to in order to download iTunes 11, you might want to read some of the iTunes 11-related comments and questions in this discussion forum.  Make sure you REALLY want iTunes 11.  I downloaded it this morning, and am regretting it now...  :-(

  • It just wont start!!!

I have the program CS4 completely installed. I can open the program Photoshop but I can not open up the program InDesign at all. (note the previous secretary who used this computer was abel to). Why wont it open!!! Windows continuously tells me that there was an error and I should report it. I've tried to install it again but I still have the same error message. Help!

Windows gives me the pop up screen that states:
InDesign.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you cna send to us. We will treat this report as confedential and anonymous.
To see what data this error reotry contains , click here.
Then I click there and it shows me 'codes'. so I send the error message and everything closes.
There really is nothing I can tell you of what is happening other than I try to open the program, it begins to open the for a split second it dissapears then comes back on the screen, then the Windows error pop up window.
What more information can I give you!!!
