Itunes keeps disconnecting my ipod

Ok here it goes, one day I restore my ipod, everything went just perfect, then I started the sync manually, I have around 4K songs, so I left my ipod and went to school, etc.. I arrived to my home and found the ipod with nothing on the screen, still connected to my PC, but not even recognized by windows nor charging, to my surprise when I click menu, to see what happened, the once completely charge battery went all the way down to a single tiny red line, at that time I start freaking out.
From that moment I disconnected the ipod and connected again, when itunes wanted to "read" ipod contents it gets disconnected and sometimes a message from windows saying that it doesn't recognize the device. I had done all the possible ways to recover my ipod, including.-
-uninstalling itunes
-downgrading to a past firmware
-trying all the other usb ports in PC
-trying formatting ipod (without success)
-restoring it in another PC cause in mine now its impossible
- and even... reinstalling my PC from scratch.
I don't know what happened to my ipod it is (or was) a 5th Gen 60Gb it was all great before the last restore.
I can still use it like an external HDD but the moment itunes starts it gets disconnected just like that.
Every tiny little bit of information would be appreciated, thanks a lot guys.

Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

Hi. How come iTunes keeps saying:"this iPod can not be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64 bit version of iTunes?"  Wth...i am using the 64 bit version of itunes. Why does it keep saying that? Will someone Help me please!? This is is getting frustrating. I already had done a full removal of everything! I even removed and deleted my library...then had to put all 500 songs back on one by one. So, i don't have to remove everything again, just to get my ipod to work on here. You, know before the itunes update, my ipod and itunes were working just fine.

wow, that was a quick reply. lol. but i have removed everything. I wasn't even able to get iTunes on my computer for a little while. i kept getting errors on that. Now it's saying that the required software isn't installed. Hmm, could it be referring to Apple Mobile Device Support? That is supposed to be installed with when iTunes gets installed right? I only ask, because that  didn't get installed with the itunes setup.

  • ITunes keeps cleaning my iPod

    Hi,
I recently bought a new iPod Classic with 160GB and I've been having some problems with it from the beginning.
In random time periods iTunes starts crashing when the iPod is connected and as soon as I unplug the iPod it says "no songs available" (oddly enough you can still see the pictures in the cover flow of the opening menu). Then when I plug it in again and run iTunes it says I have to restore my iPod completely, becuase "an iPod in recovery mode has been detected".
This happened to me about 4 times now and I'm pretty ******. I don't know if it's an iPod or an iTunes problem.
    Looking forward to your help,
    thx

You are using the eject button to safely disconnect your iPod -aren't you?

  • Itunes keep crashing my ipod

My IPod keeps crashing when I open it with the iTunes on my computer: all my music on the IPod is deleted and it resets all the settings. I get the error message: "file or directly /IPod_Control/ITunes/ItunesDB is corrupted. Use Chdsk Utility". What does this mean? I have the original software CD for ITunes installed, and i have already removed it and reinstalled it once, but it has now happened again. Can anyone tell me what to do???
    Thanks!

I have already tried that twice. Every time i plug my IPod into my computer, it resets everything on my IPod and starts the setup process again. It takes a long time for ITunes to recognize the IPod at all. And when it finally does and I try to tranfer music onto the IPod, it says "Update complete" but there is nothing on the IPod.
It also keeps telling me: "file or directory \IPod_Control/ITunes/Itunes DB is corrupted or unreadable: use Chdsk Utility. What does that mean???!

  • Itunes keeps saying my Ipod is corrupt.

I've had the 160GB ipod classic for 2 months and then all of a sudden itunes says it is corrupt. I tried reinstalling itunes and restoring the ipod. I even went out and got a new one and the samething keeps coming up when I connect my ipod. Itunes recongizes everything about the Ipod except the capacity says: N/A.

    Do you still need help?

  • Help - iTunes keeps telling me iPod in recovery mode needs to be restored

I have updated my software for my iPod, but it keeps telling me to restore to original settings. I have restored 5 times in a row, but still won't let me into iTunes. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? If not, have a look at the bottom section that covers what to try if the message keeps reappearing: iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore
Towards the end it says "If after restoring your iPod, the message described above reappears, the iPod drive letter may need to be reassigned. See the "Change the Drive Letter" section of this document for steps to assign a different drive letter" which contains a link to this article: Windows confuses iPod with network drive and iTunes may exhibit strange behavior in relation to the iPod.

  • ITunes keeps denying my iPod

I just recently (about an hour ago) updated my iTunes, my Laptop broke so I've been iTunesless for a while.
After I updated my iTunes, it gave me the following error:
"This iPod cannot be used because the required software is not installed.
Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install iTunes again."
I've done as it has commanded about 6 times by now, but I keep getting the same error, could someone give me some assistance please?
by the way, my iPod is an iPod Touch(the original one)
and it has not yet been updated, seeing as I have not had my laptop for a while.

Have you fixed this? I am having the samr problem.

  • Itunes keeps quiting when ipod is connected

every time i connect my ipod it starts to update but then itunes gets an "unexpected error" and ive killed itunes and installed the newest itunes and everything even restored my comp. but nothing works PLEASE HELP
    THANKS

    good lord.
okay, in that case it's possible that you've got a problem with damaged itunes preferences files in the account where itunes is crashing when you connect the ipod. (there's another couple of possibilities, but we'll check on this one first.)
the preference files contain the information about the settings changes you make in those tabs that show up when you go "edit > preferences" in itunes. there's a different set of preference files in each different user account in XP, which is why a bad preference file can cause trouble in one account but not another.
so let's try rebuilding your preference files in the account that is causing you trouble.
Make a note of any custom preferences you have set up prior to doing the rebuild. The rebuild will return all preferences to their default settings.
Quit itunes. Reboot the PC. Find and delete the following two files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    ... and:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
("<username>" here is the name of the account you're having the preferences problem in.)
You might have to turn on "Show hidden files and folders" to find the preference files. Right-click "My Computer", select "Open", go "Tools > Folder Options". Click the "View tab. The "Show hidden files and folders" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.
The preference files will be rebuilt the next time you launch iTunes when you are logged into that user account. (the setup assistant and license screen will run again.)
does itunes quit again in the account with the fresh pref files if you plug the ipod in?

  • ITunes keeps borking my iPod! HELP!

Hello all. First time poster here. I desperately need some help!
I'm not entirely sure what kind of iPod I have, but it's a 30GB video that I was given by my girlfriend back in '05. Not sure what generation that is. I recently downloaded iTunes 9.0.1.8 for Windows XP, and when I docked my iPod to add some songs to my iPod, it gave me the message of "Itunes cannot read the content of the iPod "DAVE'S IPOD". Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod back to factory settings." This originally happened a few days ago, and I ended up having to put it in disk mode because it kept endlessly resetting itself. To get it to stop, I had to Disk Mode it, and then restore the Pod to factory settings. From there, I had to completely resync my entire iPod. Today, I went to load new music onto the iPod and it gave me the exact same error message. I've deleted and re-installed iTunes, I've stopped and restarted the iPod service in computer management..nothing has worked. It never did this before this new iTunes, and I'll be absolutely honest when I say that I'm really angry with this. I've searched Google for the answers for others, but no one seems to have a precise answer. I'm well out of warranty, so taking it in for fixing/buying a new one would be rather expensive and in this economy, that's out of the question.
If anyone can help, please do. My iPod is a integral part of my everyday life, so losing it is pretty rough. It still plays all of the old music that's on there since my last re-sync a few days ago just fine, so I know the music is on there.
    Thanks!

Maybe, I can't tell from here ; ) It's not normal to have 30 instances of one band/folder.
So maybe it's my first suggestion - something bad in your library is causing the iPod to error when it syncs.
Do you have those multiple instances of Linkin Park in your itunes library, and also PC's hard drive? (my guess is yes) Or does it just get duplicated on the ipod? (never heard of that)
You can try building a new library. Syncing it to your gf's itunes a few times without getting the error would also narrow down whether it is your library or the ipod.
If you want to try running CHKDSK, it's in the Windows helps or easily googled, and I linked to the stuff about reinstalling the USB drivers.
My advice is to try syncing it to another itunes library. The results there would tell more about whether it's an iPod or PC/iTunes problem.

  • ITunes keeps disconnecting from shared libraries

I use iTunes on Windows to play music shared from my mac version. I can connect to the library just fine but sometimes I just get frquent disconnects. It happens when I play from windows only. If I use my other mac to play I can access the share always and never disconnects.
The disconnects are short - I can immediately connect to the share again but it's pretty annoying having to do that. Any suggestions?

Seems the issue was elsewhere. It started workign again for no obvious reason

  • Installed latest iTunes and neither original iPods connect.

Have 2 original iPods (8Gb and 16Gb).  Been using them for years with iTunes.  Have Windows 8.1.  Installed latest iTunes (12) and now neither iPad is recognized by iTunes even thought PC does.  iTunes said to disconnect and reconnect (this didn't work).  Then said to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (did this twice and it doesn't work either).  This has been working for years - what can I do to recover this support?

    Hi bobsteph,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  It sounds like you've already tried some troubleshooting steps, but iTunes is still not recognizing your two iPods.
The resource below has troubleshooting steps to take in a specific order to address this issue.  I can understand your frustration, but hopefully trying these steps will resolve the issue.
This article is quite extensive, so I've highlighted below only the sections that apply to Windows 8 and iPod Classic.  Click on the link for complete details.
iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS1363
    1. Try the iPod troubleshooting assistant
If you haven't already done so, try the steps in the iPod Troubleshooting Assistant (choose your iPod model from the list).
If the issue remains after following your iPod's troubleshooting assistant, follow the steps below.
    2. Restart the iPod Service
    Windows 8
Close iTunes and disconnect the iPod.
Move the cursor to the upper right corner to open the Charm Bar.
In the search field, type Services.
Choose Settings, below the search field.
Select "View local services" on the right side of the screen.
Scroll down, select iPod Service, and click "Stop the service."
After the service has stopped, click "Start the service."
After the iPod Service has started again, open iTunes and connect the device.
    3. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service
    This service is used by:
iPod shuffle (3rd generation and later)
iPod nano (3rd generation and later)
    iPod classic
If you don't have one of the devices listed above, this step doesn't apply to you. If you do have one of the above model iPods, restart the AMDS service as follows.
    Windows 8
Close iTunes and disconnect the iPod.
Move the cursor to the upper right corner to open the Charm Bar.
In the search field, type Services.
Choose Settings, below the search field.
Select "View local services" on the right side of the screen.
Select Apple Mobile Device and click "Stop the service."
After the service has stopped, click "Start the service."
After the Apple Mobile Device service has started again, open iTunes and connect the device.
    4. Empty your Temp directory and restart
    For Windows 8
Move the cursor to the upper right corner to open the Charm bar.
In the search field, type Computer and press the Return key.
Open Local Disk C:. If Windows is installed on a different drive, open that drive letter instead.
    Open the Users folder.
Double-click the folder that has your user name.
If you see an AppData folder, skip to step 9. If you don't see an AppData folder, proceed to the next step.
Click the View tab and click the Options button, on the far right.
In the Folder Options window, click the View tab.
Select "Show hidden files and folders."
    Click OK.
    Open the AppData folder.
    Open the Local folder.
Right-click the Temp folder and choose Delete from the shortcut menu.
In the confirmation dialog that appears, click Yes.
If you are unable to delete the Temp folder, close all programs, especially any of those in the Notification area (system tray) of the Windows Task bar (shown below). Then, repeat step 13.
    Restart your computer.
Install the latest version of iTunes and connect your iPod.
    5. Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed
For Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
Connect the device to your computer.
    Quit iTunes if it opens.
Open the Device Manager as follows:
For Windows 8: Move the cursor to the upper right corner, click the magnifying glass, type devmgmt.msc, and press Return. The Device Manager window should open.
Click the plus (+) icon (or disclosure triangle () for Windows 7 and Windows 8) next to "Universal Serial Bus controllers" to expand the section.
Locate Apple Mobile Device USB Driver in this list.
If Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is displayed without any downward arrow, "!", or "?" symbols over it, then this driver was successfully installed. Proceed to the next section titled "Change your iPod's drive letter."
If Apple Mobile Device USB Driver isn't listed, proceed to the section below titled "If the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver isn't listed."
If Apple Mobile Device USB Driver has a downward arrow next to it, this indicates that this device is disabled. To enable the device, right-click its entry in Device Manager and choose Enable from the shortcut menu.
If Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is listed but has an exclamation mark or question mark over it, continue with the next steps to reinstall the Apple Mobile Device driver.
Reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Driver
Right-click Apple Mobile Device USB Driver in Device Manager and choose Uninstall from the shortcut menu.
In the resulting dialog box, select "Delete the driver software for this device" and click OK.
In the Device Manager window, right-click "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and choose "Scan for hardware changes" from the shortcut menu.
Windows automatically reinstalls the necessary drivers and attempts to remount the device.
If the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver entry still has an exclamation mark or question mark over it, continue with the next steps to manually update the Apple Mobile Device driver.
Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver
Right-click the Apple Mobile Device entry in Device Manager and choose Update Driver Software.
Select "Browse my computer for driver software."
Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
Click the Have Disk button. If the Have Disk button isn't present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device, if listed, and click next; the Have Disk button should now appear.
    Click the Browse button.
Navigate to the following location:  C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
Note: If using a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
    Double-click the "usbaapl" file.
Note: This file will be called "usbaapl64" if you have a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't see "usbaapl64" here, or if there is no Drivers folder, look in  C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
    Click Open.
    Click Next and click Finish.
Restart your computer. Leave the device connected to the computer while restarting.
Note: During installation, if a message appears stating that the software you are installing "has not passed Windows Logo testing," click Continue Anyway to continue installing the drivers.
If the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver isn't listed
Open the Device Manager in Windows, as follows:
Windows 8: Move the cursor to the upper right corner, click the magnifying glass, type devmgmt.msc, and press Return. The Device Manager window should open.
Expand the following sections (not all sections may be listed):
    Disk Drives
    Imaging Devices
    Other Devices
    Portable Devices
    Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Reconnect your iPod. Look for any entry that appears when the iPod is connected.
    If only Unknown Device appears
Right-click the Unknown Device entry and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
Click the Details tab. In the drop-down menu, choose Hardware IDs.
See if the listed hardware ID starts with "USB\VID_0000&PID_0000". If it does, Windows cannot read the hardware IDs of the device, and has replaced them with all zeros. This is typically caused by a faulty USB connection or an incompatibility with your USB chipset drivers.
Disconnect your iPod and unplug all USB devices from your computer.
Shut your computer down and then power it back on.
Open the Device Manager and reconnect your device, testing each USB port for approximately 30 seconds to see if your device is recognized.
Test with an alternate USB cable that you know works if one is available.
Temporarily disable USB 2.0 root hubs by looking for any "USB Enhanced Host Controller" or "USB 2.0 Host Controller" (or similar) entries in the Device Manager under the USB Controllers section. Right-click on each of these entries and choose "Disable."
Note: This may temporarily disable your USB keyboard or mouse. If it does, disconnect your USB keyboard and mouse. Or, if you are using a portable PC, connect an external keyboard and mouse.
After disabling USB 2.0, reconnect your device.
If your device shows up in iTunes, try re-enabling your USB 2.0 root hubs by right-clicking on their entries in the Device Manager, and choosing Enable. If the issue returns, you may disable the USB 2.0 hubs as a temporary work-around, keeping in mind that syncing will occur slowly (at USB 1.1 speeds). Then, consult your computer manufacturer for any updates for your USB 2.0 chipset.
Note: If Unknown Device appears in Device Manager when connecting your device to more than one known-good computer with more than one known-good USB cable, your device may require service. Contact Apple. Wherever you live in the world, you can find your device's service options at the Online Service Assistant. You may have questions about servicing your device, and you can find answers to frequent questions in this FAQ. If there is an Apple Retail Store nearby, find the closest store and then make a reservation through the online Apple Store Concierge. Reservations are strongly recommended.
    If only "iPod" appears
For Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
Right-click the iPod entry in Device Manager and choose Update Driver from the shortcut menu.
    Click Open.
Click Next and then click Finish.
Restart your computer. Leave the device connected to the computer while restarting.
    6. Change your iPod's drive letter
In some cases, changing the drive letter assigned to the iPod may resolve this issue.
    7. Remove and reinstall iTunes
If you haven't already done so when following the Troubleshooting Assistants linked at the beginning of this article, remove and reinstall iTunes.
Note: Songs you purchased from the iTunes Store or imported from CDs are saved in your My Music or Music folder by default and aren't deleted when you remove iTunes.
Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Follow these steps to remove and reinstall iTunes.
    8. Disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items
Installed background processes can sometimes prevent the iPod Service from running. You may be able to resolve this by disabling some items with the System Configuration Utility.
For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: Refer to Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.
    9. Update, Reconfigure, Disable, or Remove Security Software
Some antivirus, firewall, or other security software can prevent iPods from displaying in iTunes. Updating, reconfiguring, disabling, or removing your security software may resolve the issue.
Note: For the best computer security, disconnect your computer from the internet prior to disabling or removing your security software. After testing, reinstall security software before reconnecting to the internet.
    10. Deleting damaged or incorrect registry keys
If your iPod is recognized successfully on a different computer, and the steps above didn't resolve your issue, there is likely some other system issue on your computer that is the cause. This may require you to repair or reinstall Windows. If you need assistance with this, contact whomever supports Windows on your computer. In most cases, this will be the computer manufacturer.
I hope this information helps ....

  • ITunes freezing when connecting iPod Touch to it, switching library soon

    Hello,
Soon I will be getting a new computer, and I have recently been starting the process (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US) in which I can move my current iTunes library off my old computer onto my new computer using my iPod. I was down to the "Copy iTunes folder to iPod" step (I did not do the step), when I had to leave, so I saved all my new settings on my iPod Touch and iTunes and disconnected my iPod. When I came back later that day to finnish the process, I plugged my iPod into my computer, and it froze iTunes, but not other windows open on my computer at the time. When I unplugged my iPod, iTunes went back to working like normal. It has been doing this for a few days now, and I have tried many things, which have been proven unsucessful. I really need to start using my new computer, but I don't want to do it without my iTunes library, since after I begin using my new computer, I will no longer have my old one. I need help very fast, and I will appreciate anyone who is willing to give me advise.
    Thank You.

I also have an older version of iTunes. I think it was the last version of 7.

Your Mac is running an outdated version of iTunes.
Disconnect the iPod nano from your Mac.
Download and and install iTunes 11.3  >  https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
It's not necessary to uninstall the current version of iTunes.
When you're done installing, restart your Mac.
Then launch iTunes and connect the iPod nano.
A good way to make sure your OS X software is always up to date. Open System Preferences > App Store then select:  Automatically check for updates

  • Itunes crashes when connecting ipod nano 3G

I upgraded itunes to v8.1. After that when I connect my ipod nano 3G, it won't come on, it just terminates. When I leave the ipod connected, itunes will not start up properly( just flashes and dies).
It works great with my older ipod shuffle.
The ipod nano 3G works great with any other computer.
Off course tried re-installing itunes, but problems remains? Any ideas?

  • Itunes sync music to ipod but music not visible in ipod once disconnected

    Hi,
my ipod nano refuses to show any songs I've synchronized.
it all started last week, I connected the nano to charge the battery and change my music selection.
Itunes (v 8.1 (50)) told me something like it had to erase the ipod for some reasons. I didn't care, all music in on itunes anyway so I did it.
I click on the Ipod device.
On the summary tab, I have the "sync only checked songs and videos" (and "manually manage music and videos" is unchecked)
    I click the "apply" button
then I add some playlists (from the music tab), select a few playlists
I can see the sync happening, it tooks a few minutes and I saw all the audio files being copied over until I see "iPod sync is complete"
the capacity now shows 2 gb for audio
I disconnected the ipod and browse my music but the ipod says there is no audio at all.
I reconnect the ipod to the imac, I browse the music from the device in itunes and I see that all music is greyed out.
In the summary tab of the ipod, I uncheck "sync only checked songs and videos" and check "manually manage music and videos" and click apply
songs are not greyed out anymore in itunes but when I disconnect the ipod I still can't see any music on the ipod.
I bet this has to do with the itunes update I installed a week ago.
I only use my ipod with my imac, no other computer and it was always working fine until last week.
What is going on? Can anyone help?

I have the same problem: and have not been able to get an answer. Please keep posted if you get an answer
