ITunes killed my sound card (code 52 in device manager)

I am running Win 7 x64 and installed iTunes for the first time yesterday and today I have no sound. I looked in the device manager and I have a yellow exclamation mark next to my sound card (Asus Xonar DS PCI). In the error description it says:-
'Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)'
After googling I notice this is a known issue with iTunes. Normally this problem affects optical drives in which case it is fixed by deleting the UpperFilters somewhere in the registry.
BUT what do I do in the case of a broken sound card?
Grateful for any help!

Sorry, when I said 'kill' i meant it stopped it from playing sound not actually damaging the hardware. I am guessing iTunes must be installing an unsigned driver which hooks into the sound card driver and hence windows believes the sound card driver is unsigned. And because 64-bit windows requires drivers to be signed it blocks the device from starting. Just my guess correct me if i'm wrong.
To be honest, i cant see a different pci slot working as it seems more like a problem on the driver level rather than IRQ conflicts etc.
Changing sound card may work because it would be using a different driver altogether (Realtek HD audio), but that would be £40 wasted on my new sound card. Actually I might be better off selling it and getting better speakers instead.
If I get the time, I will try once more installing itunes with the Xonar and then with the Realtek.
Will post results when i get them.

  • Did the Itunes update fiasco of 2014 kill my sound card?

I have read every post regarding  this Apple fiasco but this has been a perfect storm of Apple failure for  me, the only reason I opened my Itunes 2 nights ago was because my Ipod  of 5 years died and I had to buy a new one, so my love for Apple has  diminished greatly in the last 24 hours.
Running: Microsoft windows XP media center edition version 2002 service pack 3.
I  know enough about computers to be dangerous, I may have deleted  something for the sound card trying to get this Itunes re-install to work. I've been able  to follow everything posted like:https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5822688?tstart=30 I have deleted EVERYTHING more than once, restarted MORE than once, I  even tried loading an older version of Itunes, but the problem I'm  running into is my sound card can't or won't be detected, it was working  fine before this fiasco so I'm not sure if it's the re-install that has  caused it to be undetected or maybe it just died at the perfect time. I  keep getting this message: I tunes has detected a problem with your aiudio/video configuration and playback may not operate properly.  I  can see video but no sound, I can get into my Itunes library but  nothing will play, my sound card doesn't even show up in my devices  section anymore.
I  read a post that said something about messing with the msconfig and the  inetcpl.cpl and the dxdiag in the START/RUN area so I may have done  something stupid.
    HELP! (Apple hate) HELP!

THe update messed up my 80gb too. I spent over an hour on the phone with Apple care yesterday - and they screwed it up even worse. (I manage music & video from my home computer and my calander from my work computer.) It used to work fine - now I can't even get my work computer to recognize the ipod as a USB drive! If they would just re-post 7.5, I think I could fix it myself - but they took it off the site completely.
I told (both people at) Apple care that this is the kind of crap microsoft pulls. They send out updates with bugs. Apple is supposed to NOT do that! I am so mad right now! I just got this brand new ipod for Christmas.
Today, I am supposed to order my new laptop for work. I have been given the choice of PC or Mac. Until yesterday, I was gun-ho Mac. Now I'm not so sure. I mean - they couldn't fix my new ipod after an hour on the phone? What kind of issues am I going to have with a laptop? The closest Apple store is well over an hour away.
    Any suggestions??

  • Sound card has no Mix device. Can alsa simmulate one?

    Hey,
As the subject says, my sound card
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
doesn't have a "Mix" device from which to record "what-you-hear" sound. I've read into the subject, and keep seeing Pulse mentioned. However, I'd like to avoid switching to Pulse, if at all possible. Is alsa capable of creating a "virtual mix device" or some such contraption?

After spending a whole bunch of time, I was able to create a hardware loopback using ALSA that allows recording all of "what-you-hear".
Like most modern motherboards, mine also had a "HDA Intel" audio controller, but that's only half the hardware. You should also have a "codec" chip that the HDA Intel chip controls.
My codec chip is a  Realtek ALC662. So it all started by using some google-fu to download the PDF datasheet for this chip. Looking at the block diagram in that document showed that there were indeed "virtual wires" that connected the audio outputs (play) back to the audio inputs (capture).
Downloading, compiling, and firing up the "hda-analyzer" program showed that those "virtual wires" simply were not turned on. So I used that same program to "connect" the wires, unmute some of the newly connected nodes, then messed with alsamixer until it all worked.
The "hda-analyzer" program has a great feature that can create a Python script of the changes you've made. This is super because your changes will disappear on a reboot (unless you jump through even more hoops).
I found that sometimes if I left the hardware loopback device connected for a somewhat long period of time, a minor "hummmm..." could be heard from my speakers when no music was playing. So I'm totally guessing this is the reason why the ALSA developers don't have this loopback "wired" by default. So I simply created one Python script that turns on the loopback, and then another that turns it off.
Anyway, it works great, and if you're lucky (your codec chip has virtual "loopback" wires), and you roll up your sleeves and get really, really "dirty" in the ALSA and audio hardware mud, you just may be able to do the same thing on your system.

  • Ati Radeon HD 6370M code 43 in device manager after installing driver - can't get GPU to work

    Hello
I have bought a second hand HP laptop recently and I am having  hard time installing GPU drivers and getting it to work at all.. so here is my story:
I was told that the product I bought is a HP Pavillion DV7-4142eo. I have removed the battery and checked the labels under it - and indeed the manufacturers labeled it as a DV7 4142eo laptop.
HOWEVER  - and now comes the fun part - the product number in the bios (XZ288UAR#ABA)  belongs to the HP Pavilion dv7-4263cl. This is also true according to hp automatic product detection app.
I used the system information tool on windows 7 and pcidatabase.com to determine the models of the graphic cards in my laptop. It turns out it has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 and an Ati Radeon HD 6370M gpu.
First I tried to install the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 Graphics driver, because this gpu belongs to the DV7-4142eo laptop. It didnt work, in the windows 7 device manager I got two times "standard vga graphic adapter" showing.
Next I tried tried autodetection and used amddriverdownloader. This tool recomended installing the following driver: 13-9-legacy-vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe . After installing this driver the integrated graphic card ( ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250) works perfectly but I the other one - the more powerful one, the Ati Radeon HD 6370M - doesn't work. In the device manager it is labeled as "standard vga graphic adapter". Installing its own driver doesn't work as it results in the problem stated in the Subject.
What do you suggest me to do? Do you think code 43 means that my laptop's GPU is broken? Please help.
    Thank you

    Hi:
I would go with the product code...and say it is a HP Pavilion dv7-4263cl Entertainment Notebook PC.
Accordingly, this would be the only AMD graphics driver you can use.
Uninstall all previous graphics drivers and reboot before attempting to install this one.

  • Equium A200-26D - Error code 19 in device manager on USB ports

I have decided to try Windows 7 but the usb ports don't work in device manager all the usb root hubs have a yellow triangle and the device status says "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)".
I've tried uninstalling them through device manager and restarting the computer and downloading and reinstalling the vista drivers, as I can't seem to find Windows 7 drivers, but none of that fixed anything. I was wondering if there was anything else I could try or if I could get a link to the right drivers.

Firstly I'll state I know first hand that sarcasm and being generally rude via a forum will not get issue's resolved any faster , but I feel raped by Toshiba and 3rd parties and obliged to post
Lets start at the beginning , that's usually the best place .
    On 2008 I bought a Toshiba , being a 3D artist I thought this would be a great investment .
But sadly I was wrong .
Purchased at PC WORLD GLASGOW - for 450 GBP "just for geographical reference "
Once I had opened the shinny new box and carefully unwrapped the dangerous contents , I switched on my laptop with bated breath........................
    Guess what ?
3 dead pixels not at the side nor the top but right in the middle .
Now you can understand my concerns being a graphics artist , but this issue was quickly resolved "After a Huge fight with PC world because there generative manager policy for today was
" You cant return Unless it had 5 or more dead pixels "
" WRONG ANSWER MY FRIEND "
Ok ,so excellent they swapped it ,after I had to fork out another 50 GBP for an upgraded version because they had none in stock ! .
So effectively I got another machine that I didn't want for extra money .....superb
Ok so, I get this machine home , TOSHIBA EQUIUM A210
everythings fine and dandy for about 1 week
    A) DVD DRIVE
-At first I notice the DVD drive acting funny , reading discs then not reading them it lost all function except the ability to read ,ok not a problem I have a home PC that can burn discs ,I'll let that one slip .
    B) PAINT FLAKING OFF
the paint on front panel "where the lights are " starts to flake and fall off .
-Ok I'll put that down to wear and tear but its still only a month old
    C) OVER HEATING (MEGA) Burnt my daughters arm .
    - As I mentioned above I do graphics , this machine main purpose was to browse the internet ,maybe a few world docs , not render out 9 million polyz , I fully understand this concept .
but it started to overheat , I'm not talking about a little bit warm , I'm talking full on ,that much you could cook an egg on . not only did the machine but also the power pack . remembering this machine is still less than 2 months old .
The heat was that intense that it burnt a perfect rectangle onto my 3 year old daughters arm .
-arguing with my wife not to sue for faulty/dangerous electrical goods I phoned customer services up , and spoke to a very nice gentlemen that was happy to help .
Excellent Laptop getting picked up and taken away to get fixed ----SEE CUSTOMER SERVICES NOTES .
I was that considerate that I re-formatted the machine ,dragged all the essential tools onto the desktop ,you know control panel , system setting ect . and even made a nice jpeg schematic where the faults are "because I know how much off a pain in the teeth it can be working on the tech side and anything I can do to help "
1 or 2 weeks later I get my newly refurbished laptop back .
    Superb , or so I thought ...................
Jump forward 6 months later , just before the manufactures warranty runs out IRONICALLY
Inbetween random faults and the paint starting to fall of AGAIN ,
The machine starts to switch its self randomly off ! without prior warning .
"Ok , maybe it was just a system fault , I'll restore .
Nope still doing it , Maybe its the battery not holding charge and it's struggling to detect it ?????
Nope its still cutting out ................
May I also add after the return off the machine ,which in my professional opp " YOU JUST REPLACED THE SHELL AND BLEW THE DUST OFF " . --------- PLEASE POST CUSTOMER SERVICES NOTES ...."maybe I'm wrong ?"
Now due to the machine randomly switching it's self off it caused massive corrupt sectors and chkdisk errors and loss of data ."some of which was costly , but functionally I'm an intelligent spices I managed to back MOST data up .
Ok so not a problem It's getting old (1year and 3weeks to be exact ) , its generally used for Internet ,theres some work and some personal photos ,nothing thats going to rock your world .
I'll use it for that .
    OVERHEATING AGAIN :
Now this can be caused by dust ,also quoted by one of your ignorant members of staff .--
!!!!but this was caused by another mass produced product ,quickly shipped out and grossly missing product user safety testing .....................
    HOW DO I KNOW THIS ::::::::::::::::::::::;
Mainly because when you Google Toshiba A210 it hits over 3 million user faults / problems
"Excuse me for sounding like one of your tech guys , but I used google search string to legitimize the search "
and the evidence is there .
Ok so its overheating ,thats maybe why it keeps cutting out ?
not a problem ,not UNTILL TODAY .
"sorry it took so long to get here "
So today My daughter "now 4 " is playing on nickjnr home page "Carefully avoiding the hot lava that pours from the heat vent at the side , and it cuts out again ....
    Goto Switch back on
" A method we now call " PULL THE PLUG OUT AND SWITCH ON AND OFF 5 TIMES ,STAND ON 1 LEG & PRAY .............
    and up pops this
some here may have seen this before ...................
THIS IS CAUSED by poor programming and bad development
    BIOS :
Its called BIOS lock "and yes i did try , TOSHIBA , ADMIN , 12345678 blah blah blah " effectivily the machines decides to encrypt or maybe not encrypt a password , just depends how it feels that day .
Toshiba know about this fault and offer a fix ##maybe at a price ,just depends on what sales rep you get ##
This is the whole point of the conversation so If I lost you with bad grammer / spelling at any point in the post please PAY ATTENTION this is the IMPORTANT PART
    ================================================== ==========================
I searched ways to brute force , fix , remove battery and so on when I decided enough was enough this machine is faulty -------I'm going to give legal jargon here just so you know where on the same page .

There's others if you would like me to continue ,even better ones but I'll just use this one right now , just to be polite .
Your PRODUCT was faulty since it left the covaor belt , your people should have picked up on this when it got returned but I'm sure they may have been busy ! .
Now we can argue these points and justifications but ontop all that .................
    this hurts the most .
Today I phoned - TOSHIBA CUSTOMER SERVICES :
"Sorry Mr Scott for the problem you can either wait and we'll send someone out to fix it , OR I QUOTE you can take it to PC WORLD and because there TECHGUYS they will be obliged to fix FOR FREE due to it being purchased there .
I PHONE SEVERAL PCWORLD NUMBERS UP and bounced there calls try to get an answer before someone on the end says # " Maybe you should take into your local store 15 miles away " ----
    great thinking sherlock
    OK
I GOTO PC WORLD : Yet another human with the capacity of a moth , 300 million sp3rm and that's the one that got threw .
TELLS ME " We don't do that because we are are not obliged to fix it " ,"But i have a piece of paper with a customer reference that a trusted toshiba services man gave me
Ok hold my breath walk out and go and phone TOSHIBA up again not a problem ................
This is where it gets good , I phone you after speaking to another 4 or 5 people on your side .
When I get to speak to someone that's happy to help but at a price ,who decides to become law and Order roled into one, the conversation gets silly and YOU throw potential threats and jargon around #congrates your grease monkey can read off a pdf document ,well so can mine ,but fortunate she has practiced Law for the last 10 years and is pretty accurate ...
but again I said Polite so here it is :
YOUR QUOTE TO FIX YOUR PRODUCT ::: 100 + GBP give or take just depends on how constructive your people decide to be that day ...
    So here is my QUOTE
    PHONE CALLS
    TOSHIBA 8 : average length 20 minutes 8 GBP
    PC WORLD 4 @ 1.50 min 15 GBP
    GAS / FUEL : 15 GBP
    Loss of Earnings : 90 GBP @ 5 DAYS 410 GBP
Damages " DO YOU GET MY POINT YET ? "
As I mentioned I'm a reserved man ,but getting shafted by TOSHIBA from all angles does has Limits
Now what I would like to see arriving on my front door is a new brand spanking Laptop with " WE ARE SORRY " note attached .
but for some reason I don't get that impression ?????
I'm hoping we can remedy this issue in a sensible fashion ,
If we can't , I do have a great idea of posting a YOUTUBE video of me destroying your product with several sharp objects , counter productive maybe ,but when it hits a million hits I'm sure I will get another company to give me a laptop out the kindness of there heart ................
Now for forum posters I apologize for raining on your day , to TOSHIBA please try to understand why I'm a little bit upset .
    Have a nice day
    PEACE .

  • Satellite A200 PSAE6E: Controller code 28 in device manager after Win7 installation

I have the same problem! I have an A200-PSAE6E with Windows 7. My device manager shows me a perfect SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller under SD host adapters. But it has a certain Mass Storage Controller, under Other Devices, and that one doesn't have a driver installed (code 28). I try to update it, but it doesn't find anything.
Here on Toshiba's website I can't find the drivers for the card reader either. I think it's Card Reader Controller (there is a Flash Card Support Utility, but I'm almost certain it's the other one)
There is a Card Reader Controller driver for Windows Vista 64, but my Windows 7 is 32. Do you think I should try that anyway? Do you think perhaps Toshiba won't even release a driver for that?

    > Here on Toshiba's website I can't find the drivers for the card reader either. I think it's Card Reader Controller (there is a Flash Card Support Utility, but I'm almost certain it's the other one)
If you would click on More Info which is on the right of the driver page, then you could find all details about the drivers.
The Flash Card Support Utility is not driver but utility (the name said everything) and this utility controls the FN buttons.
Visit the Toshiba European driver page and choose your notebook model.
Then try the Vista 32bit driver called Flash Media Driver (dont mix it with Flash Card Support Utility). The Flash Media Driver v 2.0.0.6 is for your Bridge Media Slot. This slot lets you insert either a SD card, Memory Stick (Pro) or xD picture card.

  • [t431s] Code 28 in Device Manager for all external storage.

I'm using Windows 8.1 on a t431s. I'm having this problem where none of my external storage is being recognized. Under "Device Manager" any sort of external storage I plug in ends up under "Other devices". When I click on the device, I get Code 28 "The drivers for this device are not installed." Trying to update the driver brings me nowhere. The devices don't appear under disk management.
What's weird is that other USB peripherals such as mice and USB headphones don't have any problem.
Here's what I've tried so far:
    Updated the BIOS.
Used Lenovo's SCCM package for Windows 8.1
Tried installing the individual drivers for each hard drive.
Nothing works! What's going on here?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
    Solved!

    Hi, Buggy
After doing a bit of research. It seems your not the only one with this issue. WD has had this issue with even Windows 7 since 2012 with other Passport models.
I honestly recommend seeking support with WD about this issue if you have not done so already as the ones who where able to fix this issue did so with updated drivers from WD.

  • SD-R6112 drive no longer recognized - Error Code 19 in device manager

    Hello!
I have two opticals (one internal, one external) that suddenly are unrecognized. Both are showing up in device manager with the same error message as follows:
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
After uninstalling and re- installing both several times, including rebooting the devices still will not change status.
The devises are: TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R6112 (internal)
TSST corp CD/DVDW SH-S182M USB Device (external)
Both devices were working just fine the last time I was on my laptop, 2 days ago.
I assume I need to delete some registry entries, but without specifics, I'm not going there!
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks so much

In my knowledge a registry problem was detected. This can occur when more than one service is defined for a device, if there is a failure opening the service registry entry, or if the driver name cannot be obtained from the service registry entry.
As far as I know Microsoft provides these solution options:
Click Uninstall, and then click Scan for hardware changes to load a usable driver.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then select Last Known Good Configuration. This rolls back to the most recent successful registry configuration.
Furthermore you could try to remove the Upperfilters and LowersFilters from this registry entry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4 D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
If it doesnt help then access the device manager reinstalls the primary and secondary channel from the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller section and reboot.
    Good luck and Bye

  • Satellite Pro L300-23L: error code 12 in device manager after Vista install

    Ok,
    So I've re-installed Vista (32 w/ SP2) on my Satellite L300-23L after a virus and I'm having a couple of issues:
    Issue 1
A Code 12 on Intel Family Chipset 4 - There are two versions of this in the device manager, one is hidden. The one that isn't hidden is the one with the Code 12. I've tried installing latest drivers from both Toshiba and Intel. Problem still persists.
    Issue 2
The sleep option on my power off section is greyed out and the hibernate option is missing altogether. Have tried upgrading BIOS but install says that they are up to date.
HELP! - I can find my way around a computer but don't assume I'll just know how to do something, I'd be grateful if you could walk me through any actions.
    Thanks in advance. :)

    Hi
    The error code 12 means:
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system. (Code 12)
Dont think this has something to do with the missing driver.
    Would recommend doing this firstly:
    1. Go to Start Menu-All Programs-Accessories, then right-click Command Prompt and select Run As Administrator
    2. Enter: bcdedit /set CONFIGACCESSPOLICY DISALLOWMMCONFIG
    3. Restart your PC

  • Sd card reader not in device manager

    Hi,
I have recently formatted my HP DM1 4118au, and after which, my SD Card reader was undetected by  the Device Manager.
I have tried to install the Driver but it's still not detected.
Any otherway to make it work again, or to diagnose what is wrong?
I am afraid it is the hardware itself and not the reformat.
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Satellite L300D - Error code 19 in device manager on CD/DVD drive

I have a Satellite L300D model PSLC0E and have just installed Windows 7 upgrade from Vista, all is running well apart from HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N ATA DEVICE and ATI. With the HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N ATA DEVICE there is a driver problem it says <Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)>it seems to do with NTI Backup 4, have tried updating to NTI Backup Now 4.5 but still no luck.
With ATI I have run updates and reinstalled the program, checking the system it shows that it is installed and the every thing is running but I do not seem to be able to change the display settings the largest is 1200 x 800, I seem to think that with ATI there should be more but not sure because when I start to run a game the screen size changes to 1024 x 768 and i cannot change anything. Any body got any Ideas?
    Grommitt60

    Hi
1)Have you also tried to remove the upper- and lowerfilters in registry? I have noticed in forum that this does solve this error code. On the Microsoft Knowledge Base you can find a workaround for this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
2)I have also Satellite L300D and the maximum screen resolution is 1200x800. So you can set a higher screen resolution on internal monitor, this is only possible on external monitor.
And normally you can change the screen resolution in every game. Check this!!!

  • HP Pavilion dv7-1130us IDT HD sound card problem: recording levels too high

I have been trying to get the IDT HD sound card in my HP Pavilion dv7-1130us laptop to allow me to switch from "microphone" to "Line In" input signal. I cannot find an option anywhere in the laptop do this. There is not a separate Line-In jack on the laptop. The mike jack is it.
The reason I'm trying to change the input setting is that I am using Audacity/Lame (the Win 7-compatible Beta version) to convert old cassettes to MP3. My laptop came with Vista but I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) earlier this year.
The problem is that recording levels are way too high using the mike input and so the recording comes out harsh and distorted. I have tried all possible recording level adjustments on the tape deck (no option), IDT sound card control panel, Windows device manager, etc.
From what I am reading on the online Audacity forums, using a mike input will cause the recording levels to be too high, and the setting has to be changed to "Line In" and not "microphone." Is there not a way to do that with this laptop and sound card?
The HP Support Assistant tells me that the driver for my sound card is up-to-date.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. I've been trying to find a solution on my own for a couple days with no luck.

    Hi Amanda,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp52501-53000/sp52658.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.
    Regards,
    DP-K

  • No sound card found

    W510 - Win 7 Enterprise x64 -
On day, randomly, my sound card went missing.  The windows speaker icon has an x over it, it claims no sound card installed.
The device manager has no record of conexant (though the nvidia HD Audio drivers are still there).
I have tried to install the conexant drivers through the lenovo support site, but get the error, "Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver."
I have updated BIOS, I installed the toolbox and did a system check, and I hvae rebooted many, many times doing little things here and there to try and diagnose this problem.
Its as if the actual hardware of the sound card does not exist to the operating system.  No drops or major bumps occurred to the laptop.
Any ideas of what I could do next, presuming this can be fixed without getting warranty repair work done (which is a little out of my reach due to my location right now)?

    Try a ThinkVantage Toolbox diagnostic.
Alternatively, try a bootable Ubuntu LiveCD.

  • Sound card problem - This device cannot start. (Code

    hi all,
    here's my situation...
i had a dell dimension 4400 that came with a sound blaster li've! value(wdm) sound card. i recently got a new motherboard/case etc. i transferred the sound card to my new system and i get a "This device cannot start. (Code 0)" error when i check device manager. for some reason, the game port on the sound card is working fine, but the audio processor part has the error. windows recognizes the card, but it won't use it. the card is a little over 3 years old.
now, i've read the forums, tried a clean install, registry tweaks, changed bios settings, even did a hd format. i also tried different pci slots. i have sp2 and all my other drivers are updated.
the new motherboard i have is a gigabyte 8ipe000g. i already contacted gigabyte, did not get much help. it has onboard ac97 audio. i disabled the onboard audio, but it did not seem to change anything. i have also tried windows drivers, the dell drivers from the cd, and the drivers from the creative website. none of them changed anything. i am now having trouble removing the drivers from add/remove programs. i keep removing them, but they still remain, even after using the wdm driver remover from the cd (a file named ctapxx.exe, or something similar). it's almost like windows is not actually installing the drivers when i install them. i'm wondering if the code 0 error is specifically driver related.
the first time i disabled the onboard audio and updated the drivers a weird thing happened. every time i started the computer up it would crash when it got to the desktop. it no longer does this for some reason, everything now starts up, but i have no audio. the sound card is the only device giving me problems on my system.
is there anything else i need plugged into the sound card? all i have is the sound card plugged into the pci slot, and an audio cord going from the card to my dvd dri've. is there anything that is supposed to go from the card directly to the motherboard? as far as i can tell, i have everything hooked up correctly. i don't understand why the game port works, but not the audio processor.
so, i have basically tried everything. seems like quite a few people get code 0 errors with some sort of hardware they have, but it usually seems like there is no definite solution.
does anyone have a similar problem, or a solution? hopefully i don't have to get a new sound card. i would just stick with my onboard audio, but i hear it can cause problems with games.

Since you have a new board it maybe a bios setting.
Is there IRQ conflict from the soundcard.
Maybe remove the card and unistall the software, use a tool "driver cleaner pro" to remove all creative files.
Check your mainboard manual on what pci slot that dont share, i hear slot 3 is the one to use, i use slot 5.
    Fit the card and reinstall.
    Best of luck.
