ITunes-LAME settings ideal for voice.

Using iTunes-LAME Encoder v2.0.9 (34) & LAME v3.97
I am having trouble with some past suggested encoding options for voice or audiobooks. Of the settings below, only -b 48 produced an encoding. I expected adding -m m to the end of that would get me a mono of the same but got a spinning ball instead. The others below all got stuck on "gathering info" with a spinning rainbow. I'm wondering if the latest lame has a change in the command line for encoding options?
I am looking to end up with a small file size for Audiobooks (ie 48 kbps), and yet resolve the voice "s" harsh digital sound.
Using Audio Hijack Pro off a CD player set to CBR - 48 kbps - mono, I got a good sounding file much better on the "s" than iTunes (built in import) set to the same settings. Thus I was trying to see if iTunes-LAME could do as did AHJPro.
Looking for speed as well. The -b 48 sounded ok on the "S" but lost some of the higher frequency thus a little muted sounding. Also important not to make this a long encoding process as there are many discs to do. I realize the list below has a few different bit rates and CBR VBR and ABR. Some I do not understand the setting as they did not appear on the usage guide.
Suggestion desired.
Anyone know a most current list of encoding settings (usage) that will work?
So far tried:
--preset 22 --noshort --scale 1.05 -q0 -mm --resample 16 --lowpass 7.0
-b 32 --resample 22050 --lowpass 8000
--alt-preset 64 -mm -b32
--abr 64 -mm -b32
-b 56 -m m
--preset voice
-b 48

Using a different iTunes library I was able to use the settings posted in my last message without a spinning ball. I think iTunes-LAME was just not finding the source. (I tried to edit the above for a 3rd time but forum wouldn't allow.)
Thus the problem is not in the settings, and I was able to compare the results.
Though I'm still interested in a good discussion of settings both for voice and music.
I cannot explain the settings of the first two listed above.

  • Capture Settings Ideal for SD DVDs and flash, coming from HDV to save time?

    Hello, I have 14 hours of HDV footage shot at 60i, using my Canon xha1. I need to create footage which will be put into a standard dvd and most importantly, be put online as relatively small files.
    My questions is, what would be the best capture preset to minimize file size as well as maintain quality good enough for nice flash video?
    I usually go with the HDV-Apple ProRes 422 and sequence preset Apple ProRes 1440x1080 60i.
    Should I stick with this set up, and just deal with the huge rendering and export times? Or are there any settings ideal for my needs to make everything easier right from the beginning?
    Thanks,
    Erik

    Don't reduce the quality of your footage before you have even started to work on it.
    What you should do is edit in ProRes and complete your project in that format.
    You would then export a master file of the finished piece and generate your deliverables from it.
    A DVD uses MPEG 2 video and ac3 audio files. Those are made in Compressor and imported into a DVD authoring application such as DVD Studio Pro.

    I am using OS  64 bit Windows Vista Home Premium and recently updated the latest version of iTunes. (I only have this CD burning software on my Laptop). Ever since updating, I  received the message 'Registry settings for the iTune drivers are missing for CD burning'. The drivers for Lower and uppper filters in the registry are missingand I now have no optical drive.  I have unistalled and  reinstalled Itunes and manually entered the filters. Have tried everything including something called GEAR driver installer which was suggested on several technical sites. Everything  was working fine in iTunes until I updated it.. It's strange I can still import music but not burn?? Friend s have told me they have ha dthe same problem when updating iTunes but resolved the problem by uninstalling/reinstalling or altering registry keys.

    This is a copy of ONEof the keys  in the registry I changed  as told by Apple support today. I also have changed others as instructed by GEAR  software support to manually delete GEAR drivers (that I had installed but couldn't delete some of the others  they mentioned from Windows system 32. Then some bright spark at work told me I need the Gear drivers so  I downloaded the software and installed again.

  • What is the best iTunes Equalizer settings for Bose QC15 Headphones?

    What is the best iTunes Equalizer settings for the Bose QC15 Headphones? An image of those settings would be great.

    I'm a bit of an audio geek, so I can tell you that YES whatever sounds right is what you want, but NO those settings are not very good. The general setting is "OK" but the values are extremely out of range. Take that setting and reduce the distance between the sliders and you're getting there. Look for example at how the other iTunes presets are made, the don't go that far from the horizontal middle, and for good reason.
    When you play a recorded song, the song has usually been put through an extensive process of mixing, EQ and mastering before you got it, in order to get the best balance of all frequencies, to ensure the best sound accross a wide range of speakers and headphones, and to ensure the most important details and instruments are audible when played together.
    All speakers are different, and that's where the idea of an EQ for the listener is introduced. The idea is to tweak the overall sound from your music player (iTunes) to compensate for the strengths and weaknesses of your speakers. Which to be honest, is a bit much to expect form a typical music consumer.
    The iTunes EQ has a set of horizontal lines representing 3dB (volume steps) each. In my experience you should not boost or cut more than 6 db at the most - and that's a lot! I stay at around 0-4dB. The extreme options are there to cut noise from bad recordings or emphasize a detail you can't hear very well.
    So here's basic EQ lesson:
    The EQ represents the range frequencies in sound that the human ear can hear. Actually they go beyond that - most people cannot hear the far left and right frequencies. The range of frequencis start at "deep" or "low" frequencies at the left (bass) passing through the Midrange (midtones) in the center, to the (treble) at the right.
    Your speaker has a limit to how many frequencies it can play at once before it starts to lose detail - meaning one sound will drown out in order to make room for another. So don't over-EQ your sound or it'll ruin it.
    How to tweak an EQ:
    1) Start by playing a well-produced piece of modern music  - it'll most likely be well mixed and employ a wide range of frequencies. I'm into heavy metal but for this I'd probably go with some average pop music, because metal is so noisy it gets hard to pick out the details.
    2) Set you EQ to FLAT - zero all accross the board. It'll sound pretty flat and boring unless your speakers are very "flavoured" or "colored" already.
    Sliding any of the EQ bar up, will increase or boost the volume of the frequency the bar represents. You can't really add frequencies that aren't there already - you're just adding noise in that freqeuncy and that will "fill up" the available frequencies on your speaker, causing that "drowned out" effect I was talking about.
    Instead, slide them down from the center, and you're cutting the volume instead. This is better because it'll leave more "room" for the other frequencies. You can always use the Preamp slider at the end if you're worried about loudness (but I wouldn't).
    3) Start by tweaking the 500 and 1K slider. This represents the middle of your ears' range of hearing and the most noticable change. It should most likely go downwards - this will take the "canned" sound out of your music and that'll be apparent quickly. Go ahead and slide that down as far as -6dB.
    4) Now work outwards from the center forming a "v" shape, where the top tips of the V end at the 64 slider and the 8k slider. The very far left and right sliders (32 and 16K) should dip down again to about 0bB. Trust me, these are almost non-important in most music. You can tweak thos last if you feel it's needed.
    5) now it's time to start playing round with the V shape. Go ahead and try sliding the sliders a little up or down between 125-250 and 1K to 4K. You may find that some need to move a lot out of the average "V" shape before the sound is good. This is what my iTunes EQ settings ended up looking like for my Motörheadphones "Motorizer" headphones:
    Hope it helps.

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom

  • AutoQoS for voice traffic settings?

    Hi Everybody,
    I have enabled auto qos on switch and following are information
    Voice is the most important traffic in network, must ensure voice traffic goes first

    For the
    DSCP 46 : it's 01-03 (voice)
    DSCP 0 : it's 04-03 (general traffic)
    From my understanding
    - 01-03 means queue 1 and threshold3. (by default threshold3 is 100 and hidden)
    - queue-set 1 is enabled by default on all interface and hidden
    According to the above information,
    - Does the Auto Qos is design for voice goes first?
    - Why the Q1 buffer and maximum are less then Q4? isn't suppose to set more buffer on Q1 for voice traffic? or I have to re-distribute the queue buffer and threshold, etc...
    - or I just use priority-queue out, then those queue setting will be ignored?
    Thanks in advance

    After updated to iTunes 11.1.4 for windows vista , I was unable to open iTunes and it keep error message. My iphone unable to USB hotspot the internet to computer. Pls Help

    Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
    Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
    Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
    The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
    Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • 2 Iphones on same Apple/Itunes account a problem for OS6?

    My wife and I each have an Iphone as well as Ipad..(2 phones, 2 Ipads).  We have one Itunes/Apple account id, mine. So far it has not been an issue, but today I just updated all of the devices to OS6 and I'm a little concerned about the new messaging setup. It looks like the messaging parameters are now attached to the account and not the device. It appears the settings on both phones are synced and identical.
    When I go into message set-up --> Send & Receive :
    The first section labeled: "You can be reached by Imessage at"  has   my celltn, wife's celltn, my email, wife's email.  All 4 are checked
    The second section labeld: "Start a new conversation from:  has my celltn, wife's celltn, my email, wife's email.  Only my cell tn is checked and only one selection is allowed.
    Am I to interpret that the first section means that any text message sent to any of the 4 address listed will be recieved on all 4 as well?
    And it looks to me like the second section means that messaging can only originate from my cell phone (the only one checked)?
    I just noticed this this morning as I updated the phones then had to leave. I intend to do some testing tonight, but I certainly hope this isn't a 'new feature" that will force me to create a second Apple count just so my wife can use text messaging.
    Anyone have a similar issue or can tell me its not a problem?
    Bob

    Hi Mate.
    Just had a little think about this and think this is fairly simple to resolve although I haven't tried it so let me know if this works. This should allow you to have two different iCloud accounts for each device but still use same apple I'd for purchases of apps music etc.
    Back up both phones onto iCloud before doing this so u can revert back if it doesn't work. Continue the rat at your own risk.
    Do this on both devices.
    1) Go into settings... iMessage...send & Receive... Apple ID... Sign out
    2) Go back to settings.... imessage... use your apple id for imessage... create new apple id (Each user set up their own iTunes (iCloud account)
    3) Settings... iCloud.... Account... Turn off contacts, calendar reminders etc. but when the option comes up KEEP ITEMS
    4) scroll down and select Delete account again keep data on phone
    5) then go back into settings and sign into iCloud using your new iCloud settings on each device
    6) once you've done that it'll say your contacts, calendar etc on this phone will be merged onto iCloud make sure you click merge then all your contacts will be saved up to the cloud.
    7) check iTunes password is right by clicking settings.... iTunes & App Stores apple I'd should be that which u use for iTunes :-)
    Hope this helps.
    Add the new profile.
    Then just use the original iTunes account details in the iTunes Store settings so u can still both use the same account for music and app downloads.
