Itunes Library Catastrophe - XML

So after being frustrated with the fact that even though my Itunes Music Folder was the same, I was getting 16000 exclamation marks, and after trying everything else on this list, I tried the last option of deleting my files and exporting and then re-importing an XML library file.
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/blogs/index.cfm?RSS&blogid=4&entryid=1794
Having done that, I've now lost ALL my playlists' information and all the information of when my files were added.
Is there anyone can help undo this catastrophe and just send me back to yesterday before I had any of these problems?

I guess a better question is, since I don't have Time Machine, if there's no way to restore my computer back to yesterday, and I didn't export the playlists because silly, silly me, I thought exporting the library INCLUDED the playlists:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93763
Am I essentially screwed? Because I've been keeping dozens of playlists over the past couple years and I would really hate to have lost them.

  • I have multiple libraries on an external drive. Somehow all the iTunes library files i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, Media folder, etc disappeared! Only the music files remain. Now when I start iTunes w/option it can't find any of the old libraries!

Help! I 'm using an old G4 powerbook, Mac OSX 10.5.8, iTunes ver 10. I have multiple iTunes libraries on an external drive. Everything was fine for a while, then all of the iTunes library files, i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, artwork folder, Media folder, etc mysteriously disappeared! Only the music files remain (thank god) So now when I start iTunes w/option key to choose a library, I can't choose any of them because iTunes won't recognize them. Because all the library stuff is missing. So can I re-create the library files? (I don't care if I lose my ratings)
Or should I create a new empty library on the external drive, then manually move all the music files to the Media folder in the new library?
I tried some stupid ideas like creating a new library just to start iTunes, then going into prefs and advanced, then under iTunes Media folder location, selecting the location of the old library on the external, to see if iTunes would then find all the music which is still there, but no workee.
I'm out of ideas, and I searched the archives.
    Help! anyone?
    Scott

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • Problems with itunes library file. xml

Every time I open itunes it starts importing- itunesmusiclibrary. XML. Then I get a message that file ituneslibrary.itl does not appear to be a valid itunes library file. itunes has attempted to recover your itunes library and renamed this file to ituneslibrary (damage)1itl. This process happens every time I open up itunes. How do I fix this?

Have iTunes rebuild your .xml file. You can do this by renaming your .xml file and have itunes create a new one when it opens. You will have to reimport all your songs, podcast, and movie/tv show files. Yet this will create a new uncorrupted file.

  • ITunes Library Lost, XML File Intact

My iTunes library has been stored on an external USB drive. The drive just failed, in the middle of some other computer problems I'm having. The good news for me is that the XML file itself is still intact, so I'm hoping to bring my library back and restore it into the file system on a new external drive. Can anyone point to software that would restore from the ipod and use the XML file as a map to recreate the file system, or do most of them do that? Thanks.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
If iTunes is connecting to the file called iTunes Library (Damaged).itl instead of iTunes LIbrary.itl then you may need to hold down shift as you start iTunes so that you get a prompt to choose or create a library. You can then choose the correct file.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • ITunes Library data, .xml had to use an old one, how much did I lose, etc.

    Hi guys and gals,
No clue what happened but somehow my iTunes library file got corrupted and in the process I lost some of my database.
I couldn't find an uptodate .xml file (have everything itunes on an external drive) but was able to find a backup of the itunes library file 3/25/2010...
I realized that I had to manually add my podcast files since then but is there anything else that I need add again? How about Apps which I might have downloaded? What about other media files?
Can I have iTunes search my iTunes media folder and add all the missing files?
    Thanks for the help,
    Phillyman

    Hey Limnos,
Thanks, I got that idea right after I posted my question... It found some of the music and I also just changed the list view in the finder to sort by date added and could double check my records...
In the apps list I found exclamation points for some apps and manually re downloaded those apps. The podcasts were a little trickier and I might have lost one or the other but if I don't miss it down the road I guess it wasn't that important
    Again thanks,
    Phillyman

  • TC, iTunes library and xml files

    Dear all,
I've managed to move my 80 gb of classical music to TC. I unfortunately didn't follow the method related to "consolidate library" et. al.
I simply drag and drop the entire iTunes folder, from the laptop to TC.
Using the "option" - and open iTunes method, I can listen my music from TC without any problems at all.
The only annoying thing to me is the delay for iTunes app to open: a window appears and indicates that my library is being read, it takes time to get the album covers on the screen, and finally I have to wait for 30 seconds or so before iTunes app closes.
My question is: is that a normal thing? is it related to the xml files now on TC, shouldn't be on my laptop so that the process is quicker?
Is it also long for you all when iTunes opens or closes?
    Thank you.

  • Itunes library . xml disappears how recreate it. If possible in french

    Bonjour
    Hello
I accidentally deleted iTunes Library. xml, so more can use the iTunes library in iMovie, Garageband etc. ....
    What should I do?
How to recreate only iTunes Library. Xml? Should I remove and reinstall iTunes? if so how?

    Bonjour,
    Hello,
Thank you for your response but unfortunately, even leaving iTunes and rerunning again, iTunes does not recreate the file. Xml. For cons I have a. Itl, which I thought was only under Windows. I still have the content of music in the iTunes Music folder but not this. Xml file, every time I update iTunes.

  • Can I move an iTunes Library to a different disk/account?

It's probably been covered before, but what will happen if I move the Library file and the .xml file from the iTunes Folder to another disk (Internal PBP17).
I started using an External Disk when my library outgrew my internal drive. I went about it incorrectly and had a bad time  re-creating my library. All 9000 songs are back and all is well. The quandry is how to keep my internal updated with the new activity from my external drive were my 'normal' library lives. The full Library is almost at 1 TB now
The active library lives on a 2 TB LaCie d2 external Drive. A Dupe drive, of the original, backs up the library every day with CCC. I only want keep a 150 GB from the External (home) library backed up on the internal PBP17 (for travel). as the other content would not fit.
How to keep the internal PBP17 Synced with the External? I looked at several 'sync folder apps' but they seem to fail with the Structure of the permissions on the iTunes Music Folder in the Media Folder. I would like keep the Music/Apps/Ringtones/Podcasts synced and not bring the Movies or TV to the internal, which has 550GB standard Apple drive, to keep the space open on the internal.
Is there an easy way or am I forced to do it piece by piece? I Initially copied the Music Folder from the current library to the Internal drives iTunes folder then had iTunes find the data. This resets everything and I lose Playlists/Playcounts/ and other pertinent data.
Can I just drag the iTunes Library and .xml files over to the internal or am I going to be in for a world of hurt?

Well I read here that moving the folder to a new Drive was no biggy. I knew that I was worried about just moving a portion on the folder over (just music and a few movies). But I moved it and all is perfect. For a little while I thought I lost my Music Output. I had turned off the connection in the multiple speakers pref, bottom of iTunes window..
All is spectacular again. Oki Doki

  • Can I use the same iTunes library on 2 macs?

I have 2 macbooks. The audio files are stored on the external harddrive.
Does each macbook has to have its own library or can they be using the same library -- and always display the same playlists, etc.?
    How do I do that?
    Thanks,
    Sasi

Keep all the files for the library on the ext HD. This includes the Album Art, iTunes Library file, .xml files etc.
This way any time you are opening the library it will have all the files available. Hold down the 'option' key when launching iTunes and direct the Mac to the ext HD.

  • Itunes Library and Windows 7

    Hey guys,
Have a simple query that is not as such causing a problem. I was using a Windows XP machine and if I downloaded or imported a track a new folder would appear in my iTunes folder called the album name etc with tracks included, I would then have two copies of that album one in iTUnes one in the downloaded folder.
Now I am using Windows 7 (and I don't think this is the issue) but when I import a folder now into my iTunes library the XML code is updated but no new folders are added. Instead they remain in the place i downloaded them too and iTunes points to that folder. Is there a way to tell iTunes to create a folder with its own iTunes directory and then point to THAT folder rather than the downloading folder?? If this is not possible can I just copy and paste the album folder containing the songs into my iTUnes folder and then when iTunes asks me to look for the folder to find the song point it to its own folder? Christ this is getting complicated now! Sorry! Hope this will make sense to other users! Thanks in advance. The main reason I ask is because I would like all of my album folders in the iTunes folder so when I backup everything is included. Thanks guys.

Sorting in iTunes is often controlled by selecting different column headings. The sort order for any given column may be further modified by a sort value, e.g. Sort Artist affects the sort order of Artist. If you transferred the library properly all of the metadata should have remained intract and you simply need to select the a column that sorts as you want. If you had to import the library then there is the potential for tagging effects that could mean metadata entered previously didn't import with the media. Note that iTunes has no mechanism for automatically deciding which values are in <Forename> <Surname> order and could therefore be sorted as <Surname> <Forename>. The only automatic process drops leading articles (a/an/the) so that "The Doors" sort under D as "Doors".

  • ITunes, library and iPhone after PC restore

    Hi there.
I had to format and restore my PC from scratch. I backed up everything, including my iTunes library and my iPhones backup (backup of a backup).
Now I have installed the latest version of iTunes afresh on my restored PC and authorised my iTunes account.
I have connected my iPhone and after installing the drivers I could back up the data from my iPhone.
Also, I imported the iTunes library file (xml) and I could see the list of playlists but there were no songs in any of them! So I copied the all the music folders/files to the new iTunes folder (now the name is "iTunes Media", before it was "iTunes Music" even if the version of iTunes was exactly the same!). The main issue is that now I have lost almost all files artwork and there is nothing in the "iPhone Selection" playlist that I used to sync music from iTunes to my iPhone!
First problem now... if I want to sync the iPhone with my Yahoo account iTunes tells me that my iPhone was synced with another account (but in reality is the same Yahoo account) and wants to know if I want to merge the info on my iPhone with the info on "this" account (not sure if it means the "new" Yahoo account or the "old" one) or replace the data on my iPhone withe the info from "this" account (they should also get better in explaining things in English!).
Also if I want to sync my iPhone apps iTunes tells me that syncing apps will remove all my apps on my iPhone! Why?! In my old iTunes folder I had several sub-folders, including a folder called "Mobile applications", now in the newly installed iTunes I don't see it. Should I just copy the whole folder from my backup to the new iTunes folder? If I choose to "Transfer purchases" this is what I get!!!
Any ideas why this all happens? Any suggestion to make this restore simple would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • PC to Mac: iTunes Library Running on External Hard Drive

Good afternoon all. I just purchased a MacBook 13-inch Aluminum (Late 2008) and am having some trouble with my iTunes library.
On my PC Laptop, I am all set up to run iTunes from an external hard drive, with the library files saved on the external drive as well.
I have searched the internet extensively, but have not found any successful way of loading iTunes on my new Mac while maintaining the date added and play counts.
Apple offers a support document on moving the iTunes library from one computer to another (which is how I moved my iTunes folder off to the external drive), but this doesn't seem to work from PC to Mac.
Do any of you have experience moving your iTunes Library from a PC to a Mac while maintaining your date added and play count data?
Any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Ok, so for those of you that are interested, I figured it out.
I first started iTunes on the new mac and got everything set up, with the library and .xml files in the ~/Music/iTunes folder.
I then opened iTunes and went into preferences, moving the location of the iTunes music folder to the correct location on the external drive (at this point iTunes is pointing in the right direction, but has nothing in the library.)
Next, I deleted the library and .xml file from the mac, and copied over the PC itunes library and .xml files, removing the .itl extension from the PC library file.
Using the mac text editor, I opened the PC .xml file, and replaced all references to the external drive in PC speak (drive letter format) with mac speak (volume format.)
Now, when I opened iTunes it began updating the library and when it finished, all of my music was there with the correct play counts and dates added. Of interesting note, while it clearly used the PC library and .xml files in some facet, it created new mac files in the same location, moving the PC library file to 'Previous iTunes Libraries', and renaming the .xml file.
Finally, I closed iTunes and used finder to move the new mac library and .xml files off to the external drive, dropping the original PC files into a PC folder, should they ever be needed again. I opened iTunes holding option and pointed it to the new library file on the external drive.
Now everything is up and running from the external drive on the mac, just as it did on the PC. It was a bit of a headache to keep all of the information intact, but for me it was worth it. (If you don't care about your dates added and play counts, you could of course simply add the iTunes folder from your external drive to the new mac's iTunes and avoid all of the 'fun', but I've got years of data, and like to know when I added what, and how often I actually listen to it :))
    Thanks.

  • Backing up iTune library

how do I move my iTunes from my eMac's hard drive to an external hard rive and or vis versa.
    Thanks

    William hello,
to reinforce what you have been told and to help you understand it better... this just happened to me so if you follow my brief story you will pick up the thread okay.
I was working with two computers the other day an iMac and a iBook both had big libraries on and their own playlists etc. and OS X 10.4.3
iMac is streaming iTunes 24/7 ( currently over 500 hours non stop since last iTunes upgrade if any one wants the URL let me know)
I hooked the two together, the iBook has the standard iTunes setup
Home > Music > iTunes folder iTunes Library and xml file, iTunes Music folder 6600 songs. ... The iMac is a test bed and 8900 songs not in any folders, in a shared folder with RW for all .... The Home > Music > iTunes folder iTunes Library and xml file, setup is there plus another 20 libraries all named what they do and stored in a folder and an empty iTunes Music Folder.
I want the iBook to take over the streaming without breaking the connection
    1. Open iTunes Folder iMac, Duplicate iTunes Library (iTunes running)
    2. Drag dupe to iTunes folder iBook (iTunes NOT running)
    3. Put iTunes Library and XML files on desktop.
    4. Change name of Dupe to be iTunes Library
    5. Double/click on file
all done I'm now listening on the iBook once I sync the end if a song from the playlist currently 'On Air'... I have to be careful to also switch the program that is handling the steam as well... You of course do not have this concern I only mention it to show the stability of the setup
The key is, OS X 10.4.3 has all the power to keep track of it all and if iTunes finds what it expects to find at startup time it all ticks very very well.

would welcome any questions you may have William.

  • Itunes library on old HD

    Hi everyone,
Apologies if this has already been answered.
I have reinstalled windows on a new HD, but didnt export my old library from Itunes. Of course I want to keep my old playlists, ratings, play counts, etc, so before I copy all the music across to the new current HD is there anything that I need to do in order?
I've had a look at this page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
Is this the correct order to do things:
    1) Install Itunes
    2) Copy music across
    3) Copy across and replace Itunes library files (xml and itl) as per support page.
    Should that do that trick?
I still have access to the old HD.
    Many thanks,
    James

    JPaxton wrote:
And will that work even if the new location of all my music has moved?
ie music was originally in c:\blah\music
and on th new laptop it will be e:\blah\blah\music
    Depends. The typical Windows XP layout is C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\My Documents\My Music\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\<Multiple subfolders of media>
If this is the case you can relocate iTunes (with all it's subfolders) to any new path, use SHIFT-open iTunes to open the iTunes Library in the iTunes folder and all will be well. If however you kept any media outside of the iTunes Music folder (e.g. you've used Windows Media Player alongside iTunes) but imported it into the iTunes libray then such links will break unless you recreate the paths exactly on the new system.

  • ITunes library is locked or on a locked disk windows 7

    Hi all,
I recently downloaded some software called Jamcast which allows you to view iTunes / Spotify files on your Xbox360.
Since then my iTunes has been having problems.
I have a large number of mp3s on here 110Gb so it's causing me a bit of annoyance.
I'm getting the error iTunes library is locked or on a locked disk...
If I hold down shift I can get into iTunes and do the scan for media which brings back all my music but it loses the smart playlists and then when I come out of iTunes and go back into it brings back the same error message again.
My computer only has two accounts Mark administrator and Guest so I doubt it is a permissions error.
Also I seem to have far too many folders in my iTunes folder in my Windows 7 library.
    I have
    iTunes
    subfolders
    iTunes Media
    Previous iTunes Libraries
    Mobile Applications
    iTunes Music
    iTunes Plug-ins
    iPod Games
    Album Artworks
    iTunes1
    subfolders
    iTunes Media
    Album Artwork
    and
    Playlists
    Recorded Radio
    License Backup
    iPod
and my iTunes library fles I have
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
    itunesPrefs (2).xml
    iTunesPrefs.xml
    sentinel (2)
    iTunes Library.xml
    iTunes LibraryBackup.itl
    iTunes Library Extras (2).itdb
    iTunes Library Genius (2).itdb
    iTunes Library (3).itl

    iTunes LIbrary (2) Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library (2) Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library (2).itl
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    itunes Library Genius.itdb
    sentinel
A lot of the itl and itdb files seem to have a sort of locked icon on them.
Please could you let me know what the xml files and itl files do in iTunes thanks.

Copy the following (bold text) into a new document in Notepad (Don't use Word or Wordpad - they add formatting and it won't work)
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas]
    @="Take Ownership"
    "NoWorkingDirectory"=""
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas\command]

    "IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t"
Save it under "All file types" as "ownit.reg". Save it to your desktop.
Double Click it and click OK when prompted. You will now be able to take ownership of ANY file on your sytem with just a right click.
