Itunes Library Corrupts, Browser/SysPrefs/IPhoto Resets. Happens Repeatedly

Please help!
Since I've re-added my 6000 MP3's to my new 100GB Seagate Hard Drive (the original Toshiba 80GB HD locked up a month out of the 1 year Warranty) Itunes started to Reset itself and I lost all of my Genre Playlists.
Three months later, it starts saying my Itunes Library has become Corrupt. So I have to re-add the MP3's and recreate my PlayLists. Bummer, but that's not all, during one of the latest six times this has happened, my Browser has reset, losing my BookMarks and settings, my System Preferences have reset and I have to set them each time. Then IPhoto reset and the photos were not there and the albums erased, this makes it impossible to use these programs, it is way too much work when you have 2000+ Photos and 6000 MP3's.
So I am very worried.
I've read somethings on a Google search about these items, but nothing helpful.
Please Help, I pay out so much for this stuff, now it dosen't even work.
Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion - I created a new library which of course behaved correctly.
Anyway, I've finally solved it!
The only remaining item from Apple's list of suggestions was to rename Keywords. Given that I have more than 100 of these, I was reluctant to manually change or delete all of them as they suggest. I started looking for special characters, and in the end it turns out that one of the Keywords contained the percent character ("%"). I deleted the character from the Keyword, quit iPhoto, and it finally updated AlbumData.xml! Aperture and iTunes now see the up-to-date iPhoto library.
Furthermore, I went back and reinstated the "&" characters in my Event and Album names, and these work fine too. Perhaps earlier versions of iPhoto had trouble with these but iPhoto 9 can certainly handle them. The problem iPhoto has is with Keywords, which are automatically imported with images (they're embedded in the image files before importing into iPhoto). iPhoto doesn't parse them on import so if they contain "special" characters which they can't handle, it imports them anyway. I verified this by re-importing an image containing a keyword with the percent character, and sure enough AlbumData.xml no longer updates. Deleting the keyword in iPhoto fixes it once again.
Problem solved.

What does iTunes have to do with this?   Also more specific information might be helpful.

  • ITunes Library corrupted in weird way, how do I correct or rebuild?

For the record, I'm running iTunes 8.2. I have 27K+ tracks total. All of my CD rips are ripped twice, one for Lossless for home use and the second as 256K AAC for iPod/iPhone use. My tracks sit on my home Leopard Server, but the iTunes library is on a local machine (Mac Mini 2009).
Several point releases ago (probably in iTunes 6 or 7), iTunes had a problem where certain tracks got ripped from CDs as protected tracks (.m4b). I didn't realize it until l started doing an inventory of my library (purchased from iTunes Store). Over time, I had deleted many of the protected tracks (reripping them to .m4a format) but many of them were still files (.m4b) on the server. I ended up manually deleting all of those files recently. Best I can tell, all the tracked that search as "protected" in my library are songs purchased from the iTunes Store but not yet converted to unprotected AAC. (about 70 tracks).
But those "phantom" protected tracks still show up in weird ways. First, they were incorporated into playlists over time so I have that editing to do. But they also still show up in Smart Playlists, as if they are still listed in the library somewhere. Also, they show up in shared library functions, like if one of my laptops is sharing the main library, or even with third party apps like Simplify Media.
My theory is that the iTunes Music Library still lists these files but its only used for stuff like Smart Playlists and sharing. If this is the case, how do I excise the bad data from the library? If I do a rebuild (dragging the XML file to the desktop), will the references to the bad data just end up in a new XML file (this seems to be the case in every major iTunes update in recent months). If I rebuild without it and do a reimport of the files, what happens to my iPods, two iPhones and all their data/apps?
    Thanks

The iMac 500 doesn't have a DVD drive, and I don't have a firewire cable to hook it up to the 800 in Target Disk mode.
Anyway, I am wondering if it has something to do with my network layout? The iMac 800 is on a different router than the iMac 500. This doesn't interfere with normal network operations - but does iTunes intentionally block this to prevent sharing outside one's own network? If so, isn't there something that can be installed on one or both of the computers to get around that?

  • ITunes Library not visible in iPhoto

Several days ago, I installed a variety of updates to my G5. I went from OSX 10.3.9 to 10.4.2. I also went from iLife 4 to 5, updated my ipod, etc. In between the many updates, I went into iPhoto and played with slide shows. I was able to create several shows and import music into them. After my updates were done, the next time I tried to make a slide show, my iTunes library is no longer there. It shows the icons and all of the playlists underneath it. But you can't see any of the songs. My itunes and ipod are working fine. Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong?

  • Itunes library not loading in iphoto

the library shows, but will not load in iphoto. i've tried deleting the xml file to create a new one, but that didn't work.
i have recently moved my library to an external hard drive. i had no issues before.
    any suggestions?

i have been running out of space on my hard drive because of my itunes library. i purchased an external and found a site outlining how to move it and did so. it calls for moving the main folder but not the album artwork or the xml file.
i open iphoto, create a photo slideshow and when i go to choose a song, it shows me the list but gives an error when i choose it. i had no problems previously, so i assume it's because the program cannot find the songs because the files are now on the external drive. i research and several sites say to delete the xml file and create a new playlist in itunes to redirect the files. this did not work and now i'm not sure what to do besides just moving it back to my hard drive and dealing with the space issues some other way.

  • ITunes library corrupted and erased

I had a message pop up in my iTunes Library that said the files were corrupted and I needed to install the newer version. I lost all of my library on my computer, but still have it on my ipod. Any way I can retrieve it? When I plug it it, I get the messags that my ipod is synced with another library, which it's not and the options of "erasing and syncing" or "transfer purhaches" to my library, which is now empty. Any way I can retrieve my library from my ipod and restore it to my computer library?

    any suggestions?

  • I downloaded the Special Edition of 'Avatar' with the included 'Extras'... I use to see them in my iTunes library, but, can no longer locate them anywhere on my computer or in the iTunes library files! What happened?

I purchased 'Avatar' The Special Edition with the included Extras with a gift card. I had enough money in my account to cover this purchase. I only got to watch the 'Extras' for one or two times, and now, they have vanished! They no longer appear in my iTunes library or anywhere on my computer! Where are they and how do I regain access? The movie, itself, is still in the library...only the downloaded 'Extras' are gone!

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    Missing tracks
Typically this can happen because a file or folder is accidentally shunted to the wrong location. iTunes can also get confused if it expects to be talking to an external drive which isn't there. If will often reset the default media folder location and may have trouble finding files in the old folders.
Select one of your tracks that is missing in action. Press CTRL-I to Get Info. Cancel when asked to try to locate the file, then look at the location given on the summary tab. This where iTunes thinks the file ought to be? Now find out where it actually is. Post back the two locations for comparison. I should be able to give you some steps to reconnect everything once I can determine which of the things that might have gone wrong is most likely in your case.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • ITunes library content resetting

I modify content within my iTunes Library (e.g. Genre, sort names, remove total # of tracks, etc.). It will stay fine for a day or so, then I will notice some of the songs will reset back to the data content originally downloaded from iTunes. I will open the song's information and the data will reset back to the changes I had made. Then a couple days later the data will reset back again to the original iTunes content. This is frustrating, as it is messing up custom playlist, and syncing the content with my iPod and iPad.
Anyone know how to correct this problem? Apple store said something about having to recreate my library again (basically start from scratch). I really need help. Don't want to start from scratch.
    Thanks!

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be copied and renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to an earlier state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade.
If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.

Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

  • When I downloaded the newest version of iTunes, my previously downloaded music in iTunes library disappeared on my computer?  There was no warning of this happening.  What do I do?

Ok, so I downloaded the newest version of iTunes on my home PC, and the previously downloaded music in my iTunes library disappeared on my computer.  What happened?  I can sync my iPod but I am not sure how long ago I synced it so I may be missing some music downloads.  Why did this happen, and more importantly, why didn't iTunes warn me it could happen and advise me to sync with another device before the download?  I am not very happy about this and it's a huge issue for iTunes if this is happening.  It makes me very wary of iTunes.
