ITunes library creation - .itl file name query

OK, so recent upgrade to Yosemite and of course my iTunes library is screwed up. Well there's a surprise!
So when I recreate the library - the associated files names are all assigned a random date 2014-07-14.
I've trashed the files and gone through the laborious task of creating the library again, but each time it keeps assigning the same 2014-07-14 date to the files.
Any ideas how I get it to create the files with correct date?
Thanks

Upgrading iTunes means iTunes updates the library file and before doing so it makes a copy with a date.  It does not use that file and usually it is in a previous iTunes Libraries folder.

  • Retreiving Old Itunes Library with .itl file

How can I retreive a previous iTunes library from a .itl file?
I just recently updated to a the newest version of iTunes, 7.6.1 After the installation was finished I was prompted to select which library to use and was directed to my "previous itunes libraries" folder. By mistake I choose a library that was from a month ago so when I opened iTunes several days worth of music hadn't been rated and I was missing a lot of playcounts. It just so happens I've spent the last month doing a lot of editing to my library and I really don't want to just erase that. Not to mention a few dozen podcasts I've subscribed to.
The proper itl file is still sitting in my itunes folder, but I can't figure out for the life of me how to switch back to it. I've tried everything from replacing files, uninstalling and reinstalling itunes...installing an older version of itunes and then updating in hopes i will be prompted again to select the proper itl file.
I've also tried simply replacing the files and renaming them, which also produced no results.
When I go to file and then "import..." and select the desired itl file I get absolutely no results.
Is there any possible way for me to retreive my old library data?? I'm getting desperate!
    Thank you,
    Mica

Hold down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. The default location for your iTunes library is in \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\. Look in there and see if you have more than one library file (they have the extension .itl) If you have more than one try opening them in turn: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file

  • My computer The File "itunes library.til" does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file.  iTunes has attempted to recover your itunes library and renamed it to "iTunes Library (Damaged itl)"

My computer crashed when I was using Itunes.  I got everything up and running and got this message "The File “itunes library.til” does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file.  iTunes has attempted to recover your itunes library and renamed it to “iTunes Library (Damaged itl)”  Everything loads up put in takes 10 min. then my music playlists are deleted everytime I turn Itunes on.  What can I do to solve this problem?  Thanks.

    Hi shyanne23,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  If your iTunes library file has become damaged in some way, you may want to try recreating your iTunes library and playlists by following this article:

  • How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive?

How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive and keep the new iTunes library on the External Hard Drive. I have all the media and playlist and .xml .itl files, just want the iTunes to recognise the content.
I backedup my iTunes content by dragging to External Hard Drive. Formatted and reinstalled OS. My iTunes content is so large, that I wish for the Library and content to remain on the External Hard Drive. I have all the music files and playlists, I just cannot get the iTunes application to display all the content. Hoping to Not have to drag and drop all the content to be recopied into new iTunes organised files.
Troubleshooting this by researching other conversations on the web, I have come stuck for a solution. One Troubleshoot told me to hold down the Command key and then lauch iTunes and a dialogue box will appear to Choose a new library, however when I try this, no Dialogue box appear to give me the option!?

It sometimes has that funny switch symbol on it too.

  • AHH iTunes Library (damaged).itl?

I found a couple of posts about this problem but it was nothing very recent, nor anything very helpful. :/
(read: i'm not very good at computers, and i really don't know what you mean by 'just restore it'. so, step-by-step you're-an-idiot guides are good for me.)
I tried opening up iTunes, and it told me my library file was corrupt. It then started to import my library XML file. When my library loaded, of my <8000 songs and <30 movies, it left only 400 songs. I'm not computer savvy at all and I reallllly don't understand the problem iTunes is having?
My iTunes folder has the following three files in it --
    iTunes Music Library.xml
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Library (damaged).itl
I guess what's aggravating is that I lost all my playcounts/ratings/playlists.
    I tried recreating my iTunes library using this guide -- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451 -- but I'm guessing the .xml file is bad, because it only imported twelve songs. What should I do? My knee-jerk reaction is to reinstall iTunes, but that would mean I'd have to import and reorganize alllll my music files regardless. Why is iTunes treating me like crap? Was it something I did? D;

See what these setting are on your PC, I found it in a post by forum regular b noir. It has helped folks not get that damaged library message.
+Right-click "My Computer", and select "Properties". Click the "Advanced" tab.+
+Under "Performance", click the "Settings" button. Go to the advanced tab in the window that that brings up.+
+Make sure under "Memory usage" that you've got "Programs" selected rather than "System Cache".+
As for what you can do NOW, since the XML file isn't getting things rebuilt properly and there are no previous libraries? If you have an iPod, you can try getting ratings and stuff off of it using a 3rd-party program. I haven't used one so can't recommend any.
If you don't have an iPod, I'm afraid all you can do is start from scratch. Drag all your music from Windows Explorer into the main itunes library window.
In the future, make regular copies of that ITL file. I put mine on a USB drive, and an external hard drive. I wouldn't want to lose 4 years of ratings and playcounts either.

  • ITunes library damaged itl, preventing iTunes download to new MacBook Air

I have a new MacBook Air.  It's great.  PC to MAC upgrade by my company IT organsiation very smooth,
I am trying to put iTUNES onto it.  I already have iPAD2, iPhone3, and iPOD Touch running it fine.
It appears a previous problem on my PC has found its was to me MAC.  A number of 'iTunes Library (Damaged) itl.' files sit within my iTUNES.  Consequently, when I try to put iTUNES on my Mac, it refers to the damaged itl files, and suggests a software upgrade.
I have since updated all software on the MAc, btu still have the problem.
Has anyone had this problem and can help?
    Thanks

    Have the exact same problem.
When I started itunes it suddenly started importing library and then complained that the library was damaged and saved a copy to (iTunes Library (Damaged).itl). ALL my playlists and automated playlists are GONE!!!!
I want straight answers from Apple now, how do I fix this problem that you have direct responsibility for due to poor programming????
And why did this problem appear out of nowhere for no apparent reason??????
I have spent YEARS on my library sorting into playlists and so on.

  • ITunes Library(Damaged).itl   =/

So the library was damaged and the new library it made for me of course has about 1000 of my songs missing. I noticed most of them were ones that I had in my library but were not on my computer but were on my iPod. Is there anyway to possible repair the damaged library .itl file or take the library off my iPod and open it in iTunes?

  • ITunes Library Lost, XML File Intact

My iTunes library has been stored on an external USB drive. The drive just failed, in the middle of some other computer problems I'm having. The good news for me is that the XML file itself is still intact, so I'm hoping to bring my library back and restore it into the file system on a new external drive. Can anyone point to software that would restore from the ipod and use the XML file as a map to recreate the file system, or do most of them do that? Thanks.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
If iTunes is connecting to the file called iTunes Library (Damaged).itl instead of iTunes LIbrary.itl then you may need to hold down shift as you start iTunes so that you get a prompt to choose or create a library. You can then choose the correct file.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Restored iTunes folder from Time Machine, get error iTunes Library Extras.itdb file

I restored my iTunes folder from a Time Machine backup (due to my kids deleting some playlists, which I wanted to recover).
After that completed, I am unable to open iTunes, I get the error: "The iTunes Library Extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission."
Now, when I was doing the restore, it paused twice to tell me something like: a particular song could not be transferred, since there was already a copy of it with the same name... and something about it being case insensitive. I selected OK each time that happened, made a note of the song thinking oh well I can just get a copy of that song again if I lose it.
Any ideas? I looked at permissions for the iTunes folder, I have read and write permission.

Chris, thanks for that suggestion. I would still like for my kids to access my iTunes music, but just don't want them to mess with the playlists etc.
If I set up another account, then follow the instructions here -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
... to share the library with them, I'm guessing that they could still make changes to the playlists etc? (it doesn't specify in that article.)

  • How can I fix...The iTunes Library Extras.itdb file is locked on a 8.1

I can't open iTunes on a lenovo with a Windows 8.1 operating system. I get the following message...
The iTunes Library Extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.
    PLEASE HELP!!

Thanks! I have been having to open iTunes as an administrator for a year - never could find the answer. Now I am trying to link the account to Disney Movie Rewards and I needed it to open under menot administrator. I deleted the Extras file and then also needed to delete the Genius file. Once that was done it opened immediately.

  • I had a new hard drive fitted to my imac and restored it from my time machine back when I try to open itunes I get this message "the itunes library extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"

I had a new hard drive fitted to my imac and restored it from my time machine back up on an external hard drive when I try to open itunes I get this message "the itunes library extras.itdb file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file.  Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty.  Note that I am running Windows 8.  Hope this helps!

I actually was having problems with syncing of my iphone. It was suggested I get rid of this file. I took it from my itunes folder (unsure where it was.
