ITunes Library destroyed, help reconfigure where iTunes looks

Apple was unable to help me, so I'm really hoping there is an expert here that can save me hours of tedious work.
Long story short -- iTunes changed hundreds of my folders and files within them on my PC. It 'organized' them to artist/album within my Music directory. I did NOT want this, as I have specific naming conventions, and not all folders are Artist-Album-Song.
I just went through the process of moving and renaming all the files and folders to where I believe they belong. However, now iTunes does not know where my songs are. I am trying to find a way to do one of the following:
Tell iTunes to look at a particular folder --- C:/Users/<username>/Music
and every subfolder thereafter to find all the songs.
OR
Restore my iTunes to how it was looking yesterday. Make it look in the old location for the files, which will be 95% unchanged.
OR
Figure out how to bring up the box that appears after you 'locate' a file to 'use this location to find other files'. I've been able to get this to appear a few times, which helps a bit. Otherwise I need to manually choose every single song's location.
Any ideas would be extremely appreciated.
Thank you!

The first thing I'd suggest is to get a good antispyware checker and give it a go at your system. Some recent spyware has been reported by other users to shut down iTunes or prevent it from launching. From user reports, Ewido seems to be the best at catching it. You can download a free version of Ewido here.
If that doesn't cure the problem, try deleting the iTunes preference files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    and
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Data\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
You might have to turn on "show hidden files" to find them. (Right click "my computer", select open, select Tools menu -> Folder Options. Select View tab, "show hidden files" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.) Delete them or if you want to be able to put them back if it doesn't help, drag them to some other location. This will force iTunes to run the setup assistant the next time you launch iTunes. Note that you'll have to go back and set any preferences you've changed from the default.
If that still doesn't work, try this:
Bugie: Perform a Thorough & Complete Uninstall and Reinstall of iTunes/QuickTime.
    Hope this helps.

WHAT SHOULD I DO???? I'M ABOUT 2 LOSE MY MIND!!! Do I need to undo the System Restore and go back to iTunes 7 or what???

    Recreating the iTunes Library file
    Follow these steps:
    Quit iTunes.
    Locate your iTunes folder.
For Mac OS X the iTunes folder is stored in one of the following locations:
    /Users/username/Music
    /Users/username/Documents
Note: You may need to check both locations.
For Microsoft Windows the iTunes folder is stored in
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
    Open your iTunes folder.
Drag the iTunes Music Library.xml to the Desktop
Drag the following file from your iTunes folder to the Trash:

Tip: Do not add any music into iTunes at this point.
Navigate to the iTunes Music Library.xml file on the Desktop.
    Click Choose.

  • Can we copy back songs from iPhone to iTunes library, once if deleted from iTunes library ?

can we copy back songs from iPhone to iTunes library, once if deleted from iTunes library ?

Have you not got a backup of your content ? iTunes will only copy back purchases that you made from Apple. For music from other sources you will need to find a program from another source which can copy them back from the phone - if you do a search on google you might find some. Or depending from where you got them from can you re-download them from those sites ?

  • Deleting a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0

how do i delete a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0 at the same time.

    Hello CleveCo, Inc
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
At some point in time, you may have selected the option to prevent that dialog from appearing again when trying to delete tracks from your library. To reset all of iTunes warning dialogs, click the Edit drop down menu and choose Preferences from the list (on a Mac it is *iTunes -> Preferences* ). When the window pops up, head over to the Advanced tab and click the *Reset Warnings* button. Then quit iTunes and relaunch it. That do the trick for you?

  • How do I back-up my itunes library in newest version of itunes?

How do I back-up my itunes library in newest version of itunes?

Fast backup for iTunes library  (Windows)
Grab SyncToy  2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time.
If your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes, regardless of the drive letter or path it appears on.

Everything is updated!!  iPhone, iPad, iTunes and MacBook Pro...  All I am trying to do is drag content from my iTunes Library to the devices.  iTunes gets stuck EVERY single time!  What usually triggers the Non-Sense is when I am adding a 2nd file!
    Why does iTunes SUCK??
    1) Many items greyed out in the menu bar, for well over 2 years, maybe more!
    2) I Can't drag more than one piece of content from your iTunes library to any device (iPhone, iPad)
If you do it gets stuck for HOURS and HOURS in "Preparing To Update" and the little activity circle never completes, ever!!
I used to be able to drag over 1000 tunes, movies, etc. go have breakfast come back and it would all be on my device!!
Can't do it anymore, one song at a time, maybe an album at a time, or one movie, and that is it!!
If you do a 2nd item the other items stop loading and never continue!!
This is so BAD, I don't understand how they don't have this fixed yet!!
Please tell me I am not the only one!!
...and If I am tell me how to fix it!
    Very appreciated,
    Joe

I have had itunes library to go away and itunes create a new one. how do I get my old one back?

    Hello,
Did you delete the library ?
If no, press the Option/alt key when you open iTunes and you should see a message and be able to choose a library.

How to repair itunes library (damaged) file. Multiple iTunes libraries on an external harddrive. All libraries have been working fine. Do some "housecleaning" on a one of the large libraries 296GB. iTunes quits and now has damaged file. 296 GB still on HD.

The duplication is unnecessary. Exporting creates a duplicate of the file. So now you'll have a duplicate of a duplicate. Exporting is not "working on" a file.
No it's not merging, it's exporting from one to the Finder and into another. No matter what lose something. If you export the Original you leave behind all the work you've done in iPhoto. If you export anything else, you lose the non-destructive editing and the ability to revert to the original. With merging you preserve that work. Yes, you can trash the old Library when you have completed the manoevre but no it's not the same thing as merging.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue. But in brief:
Current gets you the iPhoto Preview, used for sharing via media browsers. It's a jpg, medium quality missing metadata. Original gets the file you imported, unchanged and then you can export different version of the current version at different qualities. If you choose to export anything except the Original you do not get a Raw. There's no such thing as an "edited Raw", and you lose the connection between the original and the exported version. That means you've taken a non-destructive workflow and turned it into a destructive one.
The Tiff will certainly be higher qulaity and less likely to suffer generational loss in future editing but the file sizes are vast, often more than 10 times the size of the jpeg.
Put it this way, it would be cheaper to buy Library Manager than the disk you'll need to contain all the Tiffs. Unless you plan on a lot of editing, I'd go for a high quality jpeg as a reasonable compromise.
    To be clear:
So, I guess my new question is, how can I edit the Raw image and keep it in a RAW format that IPhoto recognizes so that I can reprocess without any loss at a future time, or is it that once you edit a RAW image, then it is no longer a RAW image?
Once you edit a Raw it can no longer be a Raw. End of.

  • ITunes library isn't updating when iTunes Match is on.

I am using iTunes 10.7 on OSX Mountain Lion when I import a CD or song file or purchase music on my iPad or iPhone, it is not visible in the iTunes library until I turn off iTunes Match.  Any thoughts?  It is a pain to turn off iTunes Match just to see my music files and then to turn it back on and reindex.

This seems to be a long standing and common complaint here.  Presumably it has something to do with how Match works.  What happens if you leave the computer for an hour or two after doing the addition?  Do the files eventually appear?  I don't have Match so I can't test it myself.  I am wondering if Match just slows it down or if it really stops it.

    Hi shyanne23,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  If your iTunes library file has become damaged in some way, you may want to try recreating your iTunes library and playlists by following this article:

  • I just uploaded my iTunes library to the cloud using iTunes Match. When I buy a new song from iTunes, is it automatically put in the Cloud or do I have to push iTunes Match. I certainly don't want to upload the whole library again. Thanks

I just uploaded my iTunes library to the cloud using iTunes Match. When I buy a new song from iTunes, is it automatically sent to the Cloud or do I have to click on iTunes Match? I certainly don't want to start the whole upload process over again. Thanks

It should do so automatically, if not check it's staus this way.
In iTunes press "Command J" or select "View Options," under the view menu. In the popup window check iCloud Status. It will now appear as one of the columns in your main iTunes window.
This column will show which of your songs are matched, uploaded, ineligible, etc.
When you navigate to the song you downloaded you will see it's iCloud status.
If the status says, "waiting," and you want it available on Match now, then in the iTunes "Store," menubar pulldown, select "Update iTunes Match."
It will scan your drive, and update all status'.
You will not have to upload everything again.
Even if in iTunes you turn Match off, and back on again.
    Match remembers you!
