ITunes library file NOT corrupt but cannot locate music files

This is a new one... the library file seems to be NOT corrupt. iTunes loads fine and is populated by all the music information and artwork, etc. but when I click to play a tune, it says "cannot locate music". Nothing was moved, nothing has been changed. All my files are in the same location and iTunes shows the correct file path. The only files it can play are four songs that were imported before a massive rebuild of the library occurred the next day!
Any ideas!!
Thanks!

This is probably a big clue, but I don't understand what you mean by it!

  • Some songs from my iTunes library do not show in my Finder music folder

Some songs from my iTunes library do not show in my Finder music folder. For example one of the three CD's form a triple album do not show in Finder. And therefore they do not get saved when I back up my Mac either. Any ideas?

Consolidate ("organize") simply looks at everything you have in iTunes and copies them to the iTunes media folder location specified in iTunes prefs -> Advanced.  If you select to use the default settings iTunes will copy any files in its library in the correct location in the media folder.  Since you don't want the files in a different locaiton really but just want to deal with some stragglers don't do the full "move" in hte instructions below but make sure they are organized.
iTunes 11 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12165
The files will be copied so you will need to find the originals abd once you are content the library is working you can get rid of them (I often archive them on an external drive, delete the originals, then play the files which is a sure test if you have a workable copy on the computer).

  • ITunes cannot locates music files

I recently purchased a new Asus with Windows 8 and successfully (or so I thought) transferred music from my i phone 4. The computer is authorised. My phone recently became full as I have a lot of music, so I unticked some music and attempted to re-sync. All the files in ITunes then got an '!' symbol by them which means it could not locate files and removed everything from my phone.
After wasting many hours, I have managed to download all the applications and some music that I have purchased via ITunes - although most STILL has the ! by them and the store says I have downloaded them and won't let me do it again.
I have also changed the preferences to locate files from various copies I have made on external drives still with no success.
Strangely, when I have the I phone plugged in to the computer and as I'm syncing, it shows all of the audio files on the blue bar but just as it finishes syncing it reverts back to about 6 GB with the items in para 2 above.
Any ideas on how I get I Tunes to find the files??? I have loads of music loaded from CDs over the years and really don't want to spend the rest of my life reloading them.
Thanks in advance for any ideas. oh, I've also updated both ITunes and my phone to current software versions.

    Hello 2305deb,
We have an article to help find your missing media. Named iTunes: Finding lost media and downloads it can be found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1408.
    Resolution
Follow the steps below to locate your missing iTunes media.
    Resume any interrupted downloads
Choose Store > Check for Available Downloads from the iTunes menu. Click Resume if any downloads are listed as unfinished. For more information see How to resume interrupted iTunes Store downloads.
    Check your iTunes media folder
    For Mac OS X
For Windows 7 and Windows Vista
    For Windows XP
    Check your Trash/Recycle Bin
Check the Trash (Mac) or the Recycle Bin (Windows). If you're able to find any of your missing items, you can re-add them back to your iTunes library.
Mac OS X: Control + click (or right-click) on the item and choose Put Back.
Windows 7 and Windows Vista: Right-click on the item and choose Restore.
Windows XP: Right-click on the item and choose Restore.
If after restoring the item from the trash your media doesn't reappear in your iTunes library. You will need to locate the restored file in your iTunes Media folder and drag the item into your iTunes library window.
There are different instructions depending on the version of windows you have.
It is possible that you may need to re create the iTunes library and IF that is the case then here is an article to assist with that

  • I can see the thumbnail in "my videos" on iTunes, but cannot locate the file - what gives?

I'm using the latest version of iTunes on my Mac (OS X 10.9.5) - I can see the thumbnail of the video I want to play in iTunes, my videos, but it won't play because "original file could not be found".  What gives?  I never delete anything, backing everything up to my Mac and an external drive.  It's my sister-in-laws wedding video(s) - I'm a dead man if I can't find them.  Thanks!  I think I took the videos a few years back with a BlackBerry, if that matters.

    Hi Fun Johnny,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are unable to play videos because of an alert notifying you that the original files cannot be found. In this situation, I would recommend working through the suggested steps in the attached article to try and locate these files.

  • Itunes cannot locate music files

i was doing some spring cleaning but accidently deleted the itunes music library (in the advanced preferences both options to organize and to automatically add are ticked)
after only being able to recover 1/4 of the files deleted since im guessing they were too big, 75 percent of my media has checkmarks indicating that the file is not able to be located
is there any way of doing this quickly and not having to do each song individually
i tried deleting the itunes music folder and then reimporting the old itunes list, but again about 75 percent still contain the checkmark
any help would be appreciated since its taken me about a year to get this list down to 30 gigs from which i began with around 200gigs of music
i wouldnt want to have to start again
    thanks

There is exactly one way to move files in iTunes: Set the new location in preferences, and then run Consolidate.
Any other procedure either loses files or requires manual work.

  • Itunes 6 works fine now, but cannot play music

    Hey Guys,
I finally got my Itunes 6 to work, but now when i get in, i cannot get any of my music to play?
I just updated the latest Ipod updater (2005-10-12)
    any ideas??

    Nick,
I have cracked it on my machine.
Now i'm not a techy so forgive the basic language but this is how I did it.
My machine has Norton anti virus. For some reason the version of Quicktime that comes automatically with Itunes 6 is blocked by Norton and therefore messes up Itunes.
I turned off my Antivirus, then downloaded this.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Once this is downloaded it seems to override the original Quicktime download and IS accepted by Norton. I then tried Itunes and it started to play.
Then I switched back on the antivirus and it was all fine. I now have my music back.
    Good luck.

  • Home Sharing - Itunes library does not load and jumps to Music

Hi, I have 2 itunes libraries on 2 different computers on the same network using the same apple id.  One of the computers is an IMAC and the other is windows.
On the windows computer when I click on the shared library (from the IMAC) the library appears from the IMAC.  When I am on the IMAC and click on the shared library (from the windows computer) it looks like it is searching then jumps the "music" library, that displays the current library on the IMAC.
    Can someone help....Thank You

    Hi Jim,
If you are having an issue with Home Sharing between your two computers, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • Audio from media files becomes corrupted, but video from same files remains fine.

I've been recording footage on a Sony nxcam in AVCHD 1080p 30fps for use in a premiere pro project. After importing the files into premiere they all work perfectly fine, no video or audio issues. I edited an entire narration using only the audio from the media files, and then left my computer for about an hour to get lunch. Upon return, the audio in the files skips huge chunks, and ends about a minute before the video ends, but the video seems unaffected. Deleting and reimporting the files doesn't solve the issue, somehow only the audio in media clips seems to have been severly messed up. This happened again earlier this morning, a media file was working fine, and then suddenly only the audio has huge chunks missing out of it, and the remaining chunks are all bunched together with no gaps so that the audio ends minutes before the video does. Any ideas?

Close Premiere and go to your Media Cache Directory for Premiere. Select ALL and Delete those files. Open Premiere and that project and let it conform again. See if the audio is fine.

  • How can I download a previously downloaded purchase to my iTunes library on my laptop when the listing for the song in my library won't play because it says it cannot locate the file. Yes I have searched my iTunes folders and also done a full windows sear

How can I download a previously downloaded purchase to my iTunes library on my laptop when the listing for the song in my library won't play because it says it cannot locate the file. Yes I have searched my iTunes folders and also done a full windows search. The track plays on my iPad and my iPhones but will not play on my laptop!?
It has an "!" To the left of the song title in my library
My worry is that if I sync my iPad/iPhone then I will lose the track on those also!

If you cannot find the file on your hard drive then once you delete the current broken entry you should be able to redownload from iTunes in the Cloud. This assumes the item in question qualifies. Note that audiobooks, digital booklets, iTunes LPs & Extras, ringtones, selected movies etc. don't.
If prompted don't hide the item. You may find that you need to close and then reopen iTunes before it will appear for download.

  • Does iTunes match need to locate the actual files or just see its record in your library database? I am currently traveling in US and I have US and Australian iTunes accounts. But all my music files are on a hard drive in Australia.

Does iTunes match need to locate the actual files or just see its record in your library database? I am currently traveling in US and I have US and Australian iTunes accounts. But all my music files are on a hard drive in Australia. Can I start using itunes music match while I am travelling without the actual music files attached to my itunes?

In your situation I strongly recommend you read over that KB article. The international iTunes Stores are not cross-compatible.
My understanding of how it would work is that when activating iTunes Match on your US Store account, any songs you have in your iTunes Library that were purchased from the AUS Store account will NOT be matched. As I understand it, those files will be uploaded (which means you need the files on a local HDD). I also do not think it is possible to have iTunes Match active on more than one store ID on the same computer. But since iTunes Match is not available internationally yet, that point is moot for the moment.
To be honest you might want to wait until the service is available internationally so you can guage how will it will serve you.

  • I am trying to open iTunes on my Windows 7 PC and am getting the following message...the itunes library can not be found or created.  The default location for this file is in the "iTunes" folder in the "Music" folder.  Any ideas?

I am trying to open iTunes on my Windows 7 PC and am getting the following message...the itunes library can not be found or created.  The default location for this file is in the "iTunes" folder in the "Music" folder.  Any ideas?

Let's try this first. Hold down the Shift key while you try to launch iTunes. You should eventually see the following dialog:
Click "Choose library". Browse to inside the following location (depending on what operating system you're running):
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes library
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\iTunes\
... and open the iTunes library you find in there.

  • HT4972 I cannot back up my IPad because I have a corrupted backup. I need to delete it but cannot locate it on my computer or find help on this topic. I would appreciate any help.

I cannot back up my IPad because I have a corrupted backup that I need to delete. The problem is I cannot locate the file to delete it. How do you locate the backup file?

You have the latest version of iTunes on your computer (on a PC 'Help > Check For Updates' ; on a Mac 'iTunes > Check For Updates') ? You could also try ejecting the iPad and rebooting your PC and the iPad : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If you still get the same error then check whether it has actually deleted the backup (if you have other devices that you backup to that computer then they will also have backups) - they are stored under :
    Mac:~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
Windows Vista and Windows 7:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.
