ITunes Library/iPod

I have a 20GB iPod U2, and I was wondering if I have to store songs in my iTunes library in order to keep them in my iPod. I don't have 20GB on my PC that I can devote to files that can also access via my iPod and an audio CD. I'd rather upload the songs via iTunes then delete them from my computer to conserve hard drive space if possible. Is there any way to do that?

this can be done by manualy updating the songs on the ipod.
I wouldn't recomend this though. considering the amount of issues that people have with their ipods [having to restore them for example] you should always keep a backup on your computer to avoid headache later. invest in an external hard drive if you can.

  • ITunes Library & IPOD sync.

When I installed a newer version of ITunes, my playlists disappeard! However they are still in my IPOD. If I connect my IPOD now to my PC, will the playlists be added to my ITunes, or erased??
    Please help.

You can't sync your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod so the answer is no your playlists will not be added.
If you are using the iPod in manual update mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased when you connect to an empty iTunes after reinstalling your software. However if your iPod is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual.
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually

  • Ipod nano does not sync with itunes library, ipod nano does not sync with itunes library

bought an ipod nano, upgraded Itunes to version 11 running on Windows 8.
My nano is set  up with a different apple ID than my main account, but it won't sync with my Itunes Library, When I plug it in via USB, the IPOD nano icon shows up in Itunes, but when I do File>Devices>Sync,  the Snyc is grayed out.
does the differenct apple ID on the nano have anything to do with the fact that it is different from my Itunes Apple ID, is that causing a problem? Most of the music in my library is uploads from CDs I had already owned, not Itunes purchases.
    Solutions?

Automatic syncing is set up on the iPod's Music tab in iTunes, which is where you tell iTunes how to sync your iPod.
Select the iPod in iTunes.  There is a row of "tabs" (starting with Summary).  Click on Music there.
To use automatic syncing, the checkbox for Sync Music is checked.  Below that, you can choose to sync Entire music library, if it fits on iPod.  Otherwise, you can choose to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.
With the latter choice, you can create a selection of songs to sync to the iPod by selecting (checkmarking) playlists, artists, albums, and/or genres on the Music tab.  For example (if you want to keep it simple), you can create a new playlist in iTunes and add all songs you want on the iPod to that playlist.  Back on the Music tab, checkmark that playlist.  There are many ways to set it up...
When you Apply the change, your selection of songs syncs to the iPod (replacing its existing content). Going forward, any changes in the iTunes Music library that are related to your selection of songs on the Music tab sync automatically to the iPod when you connect it, or when you click Sync.
Therefore, if you create that playlist with songs you want on the iPod, and select it on the iPod's Music tab, you can simply update that playlist in iTunes (add and remove songs) whenever you want, and those changes sync to the iPod automatically at the next opportunity.

  • Itunes library+ipod touch remote+optical out+hifi

Goal: Stream numbers of itunes library to my hifi set in high quality level using the apple remote interface.
    Solutions:
    1. Use a separate digital streamer like linn DS and use a separate remote interface like songbook. Sound quality good. But downside no fluent integration of itunes man machine interface, playlists and libraries, etc.
    2. Use a separate dac (naim dac) with apple TV. Synchronization with itunes library on my mac pro excellent. Sound quality good. Not all the features of the apple remote are available ("DJ" and "Search" are not).
    3. Use a separate dac (naim dac) with mac mini as media server. (no experience with this set up for the pro's and cons)
    Please comments on these options.

    Hi,
In option 2 and 3 a toslink cable is needed. In option 3 as well a jack toslink to mini-toslink. My research showed that audioquest is the company which provide excellent cables for a reasonable price. In there product gamma they also have the jack from toslink to mini-toslink. I go for the cable optilink nr 5. The inner structure of the cable is made of quartz glass instead of plastic, which is an a perfect "conductor" for the transport of light with the minimum on/in reflection.

  • One ring to bind them all (iTunes library, iPods)?

I own 3 ipods (shuffle, shuffle, shuffle , an iPhone, an MBP and a Win7 PC. I would like to be able to store all my music in one place, access it from either MBP or Win7 (including buying songs). I would like to be able buy songs from whichever computer I'm sitting at, load new songs onto whichever music player I'm currently using from whichever computer I'm sitting at without being told the ipod needs to be erased if the last sync wasn't from that computer (how stupid is that?).
Is this asking too much? Do I need to wait for Google to solve this?
    Message was edited by: Dabbler

Three words: Network attached storage. Copy the iTunes Music and iTunes folders to an NAS, then point each copy of iTunes to the network share. You won't be able to access the library using both computers at the same time, but you should be able to do everything else you want to do.
Feel free to ask if you want details on how to do this.

  • Numbers in itunes library, ipod and the ipod on itunes for songs dont match

my library has 1209 files. the little ipod thing on my itunes says it has 1209 files, but on my ipod it says i only have 1182 files. i have already updated my ipod countless times. i have restored it twice. i have erased all my songs twice and i have downloaded itunes about 5 different times. can anyone help me out?

This is what I would do to make sure all of your songs are on the iPod(it worked for me).
    Steps:
    1. In iTunes - Go to Library and click on All
    2. Click on the first song on your Library list
    3. Press and hold shift and scroll to the last song in the library and click on it
    4. Let go (all of your songs should be highlighted
    5. Right click and click on "Uncheck Selection"
    6. All of your songs should now be unchecked
    7. Now right click again and click on "Check Selection"
    8. Now all of your songs should be checked
    9. Update your iPod and everything should be copied correctly
    Hope I helped ya

  • I'm an idiot,it's true.Now to fix the problem,deleted itunes library & ipod

    Okay,
So my macbook pro was having issues with the os and some other things. I decided the best thing to do was to completely reinstall the os. Which i did. Before that however i had transfered my songs an pics to my ipod, planning on transfering them back. After the reinstall i was able to transfer my pics all right. Now itunes was a lot harder. I clicked import data, and picked the folder with my songs. My music list appeard so i assumed it was on it. I deleted that folder from my ipod and removed my ipod. After reconnincting it later and automatically syncing all the songs was taken out and my itunes list had that excalamtion mark saying that it couldnt find my songs. So basically i have no songs on my computer or ipod. Is there anyway to get them back? Some way that won't break the bank?
    Sorry for the long story

Eh i sure hope so, this is driving me nuts! no music!
Umm...limewire. Other than the ethical (not legal, i'm canadian) issues being considered time would be an issue. I had about 10k songs, downloading isn't an option.

  • Managing sole iTunes library with multiple machines on-the-go with database&media on external drive?

Hi fellows. Trying to organize & revamp my iTunes library & wish to achieve a configuration but lack the expertise to achieve it. My objectives are:
    Objectives
+1. for my multimedia content to be stored/accessed from an external hard disk+
+2. to keep the entire iTunes multimedia & all necessary operating files as self-contained as possible,+
+3. Allow multiple machines to manage import of new content into library, i.e. download new episodes of podcasts, rip new music & movies into the library, sync-ing of iPod even when said machine is nowhere near my external hard disk (this is the tricky one)+
    _Justification for my objectives_
For objective #3, it's not that I'm trying to be funny. My use case is I've 1 laptop (main machine & always at home) & 1 netbook (brought to school daily). Most of my iTunes usage will be via the stay-at-home laptop; but I may wish to add/manage new content onto my iTunes library/iPod while I'm outside (hence, decoupled from my external hard disk at home).
I'm not trying to be funny for objective #1 either. I wish to have a streamlined process of retaining & re-instating my iTunes library meta-data across system re-format, i.e. where the iTunes library db files' location may be changed (most obvious being the new "My Music" folder path in Win7 from WinXP)
    _What I'm well aware of_
I understand that storing/re-locating multimedia on external hard disk is no-kick to iTunes veteran. I also understand that after a new installation of iTunes, I can move the fresh copy of "iTunes_library.itl" & "iTunes_library.xml" files to my external volume & point iTunes to their new address from the 2nd launch onwards. I also understand any new machines I introduce into my environment can be directed to that exact copy of iTunes library database files when I install iTunes & pressing "Shift" key upon their launch. Lastly, I also understand that I will have no access to my multimedia files (for playback) while I'm outside, but I can still add new content, & download new podcasts & remove old content from my library/iPod
    _The question_
However, what I have difficulty achieving, is launching iTunes on my on-the-go machine(s), without a local copy of the iTunes library database files. I doubt iTunes will be able to launch at all, & if I create a new library (just to launch iTunes), it will not possess content from my main media collection & likely to wipe out my iPod.
_My novice attempt & its inadequacies_
My 1st instinct, is to have the iTunes library database files stored in the cloud. More specifically, I can store them files in my DropBox folder/account, & have every machine update to a single latest version of iTunes library database files upon Internet connection. However, this method depends on:
+* the DropBox application to exist forever,+
+* assumed the installation path of DropBox (or any applications for that matter) to persist/remain unchanged across future versions of operating systems,+
+* Will corrupt any un-sync-ed version of my iTunes library database files when I launched iTunes without 1st updating the local cached copy of them database files (suppose I manage my iPod playlists via iTunes on a plane)+
    _Open for recommendations_
So here I'm, all ears to any fine recommendations you iTunes veterans have to offer. Thanx in advance.

In case anyone is interested in these sorta thing:
UPDATE #4: Unfortunately, if you discover you tagged something wrong after importing the songs, even when you correct the tags, iTunes will not re-organize the folder hierarchy, as long as “Keep iTunes Music folder organized“ is UNchecked, even if the songs were imported via the “Automatically add to iTunes folder” channel.
Example: I imported a folder of Andy Lau songs into my library, unbeknownst to me, some of the songs had their “Artist” tagged as “Andy Lau“, while some had theirs tagged as “Liu De Hua“. Naturally, the 1st time round I imported them, 2 separate folders were instantiated as to iTunes, those were names of 2 distinct artists (this is expected, & acceptable behaviour). The downside is, even if I re-tagged all those songs with “Andy Lau” as the artist, iTunes will no longer re-organize & consolidate all them songs into a single “Andy Lau” artist folder (because I’d “Keep iTunes Music folder organized” UNchecked remember?)
Well, you may suggest that I check that option when managing my future library & uncheck it right before launching/using my main, current library. The thing is, iTunes preferences persist across libraries, & one day I will forget to uncheck that option, launch my main library & lose all my current music folder structure to iTunes’ re-organization (which I don;t want, as of yet). Which brings me to another update:
UPDATE #5: My future iTunes library has “I:/iTunes_Media” as iTunes’s “Home” folder. This setting persists even when I switch back to my main, current library. Which means, if I’d my external volume connected while launching/using my main, current library, all new content will end up in that folder on the external volume! Which messes up the whole scheme of things! Arghz!
UPDATE #6: Here’re some updates with regards to ID3 tags:
    * the “Album Artist” in Windows (7) Explorer = the “Album Artist” field in iTunes 9
    * Modifying a ID3 tag field using Windows (7) Explorer will update BOTH the v1 & v2.3 version of the ID3 tags on the song (if the song has both versions of tags embedded & if the field exists in both tag versions). If you update the tags via iTunes, only the v2.3 tags get updated. This is surprising.
    * the “Contributing Artist” field in Windows (7) Explorer = the “Artist” field in iTunes 9 & the “Artist” field in ID3v1 tags (changes in tany of the 3 fields will affect the other 2 respectively)
o However, iTunes Media folder organization will only adhere to the value saved in the “Album Artist” field [if you change the value of "Contributing Artist" in Windows (7) Explorer, the "Artist" field in iTunes or the "Artist" field in a song's ID3v1 tags, no folder re-organization will occur]
UPDATE #7: Some updates with regards to workflow:
Decided to retain all non-music content within a sub-folder named “non-music” beneath the main album folder (& take strict precautions to import songs only). The exception is “m3u” playlist files. Have read elsewhere if you import a folder of songs & there’s an “m3u” playlist inside, your library may have duplicates and/or the tags of those songs you just imported could be screwed, etc.

  • Ipod ITunes library help please!!!

Hi, i hope someone can help. I had to return my laptop to work and it contained my ITunes library (i have spent a fortune). I thought that i had stored all the purchased songs on a memory stick but when i put this into my new laptop it won't work. I have all the songs still on the Ipod and was hoping that i could somehow tranfer them from the Ipod to the laptop to create the same ITunes library again. I could kick myself now for not getting it done properly, can anyone give me a glimmer of hope?

You can use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Sharing an iTunes Library w/Multiple iPods/Computers

I'm sure there is a tutorial somewhere that tells you how to do this...but I cant seem to find one. I'm trying to find out how to share one iTunes library that is on my mac with another computer on my network (a laptop PC). I have 2 ipods as well, and would like both ipods to be synched to the same itunes library. Is this possible? Please help!
    thanks

Not really. Each computer will have a separate library within iTunes. They can be set to use the same file storage location but I have no idea how to do that with a Mac.

  • How can I sync my ipod touch my old itunes library?

I had orginially synched my itunes library on my work laptop(macbook pro). Now I have changed jobs I would like to synch my ipod touch onto my home laptop (Dell Windows). However, I have already got an itunes library on my home machine (only ten or so songs). I don't want this library anymore, I want to synch the tunes I have got on my ipod touch. I have some purchased tunes but mostly they are from my own CD collection. I also have loads of apps and photos/videos on my itouch. As well as this I need to upgrade my ipod touch to iOS 5.
So...I don't think I can transfer my tunes, apps, photos/videos from my ipod touch to my home computer's itunes library and therefore cannot upgrade my ipod touch to iOS5.
Can anybody help me find a way to transfer my ipod content onto my home laptop? All my content is purchsed from CDs, Appstore, itunes or my own photo video collection.
    Hope someone can help!
    Cheers

  • Is there a way of getting music stored on iPod into iTunes library?

Recently my harddrive broke completely and there's no way of getting back my files. I have some files saved but not all!
My iTunes library has also gone missing due to the fact my computer had to be wiped. The only files I have are the songs currently on my iPod which was last synced about 4 months ago.
I'd like to reconnect my iPod so that the files on there can be restored on my iTunes account and I can continue using them as normal.
I'd also like to sync my new iPhone to the same iTunes library (if it works), but this has a different Apple account. This part is not as important as trying to get my music back. I had an extensive library and I'm dying to put new additions on, but I need my previous music back first!
If there is anything I can do, please let me know. Thank you so much!
