ITunes Library is on Time Capsule, the link to file in iTunes always breaks

i've finally consolidated all of my music to a time capsule. i'm finding that everytime the computer shuts down, the links in iTunes to the TC library are broken. if i double click a tune, it does immediately find the link and plays the music.
is there a way to have iTunes just re-link everything? better yet, keep it linked? it only seems to re-link manually one tune at a time, requiring a double click. ugh!
thanks-

yeah, i had already done that. thanks for your input but my problem is slightly different.
meaning, i'm fully connected to the time capsule yet iTunes still has broken links for every song. i can double click a song and it will automatically connect/play but it won't re-link the library by itself. really frustrating, as after a song is over it stops (can't play a full album, genre, playlist, etc.). something is strange...

  • Dropouts between every song since itunes 12 on OS 10.10 when using a library in a Time Capsule

Since using iTunes 12 on Yosemite I have constant dropouts between every song when having my library on a time capsule. I know the TC is in some kind of energy saving mode after a couple of minutes (why can't I change the length of that?) but the thing is: it wasn't a problem under Mavericks using iTunes 11.x.
Anyone having the same problem and/or a solution for that?

    1. No, undelete is not a feature of the Mac OS. That's handled by back up apps.
    2. Recovery Software will not get your Library back. The best you can hope to do is to get your original photos back. When a recovery app scans the disk it will find many files of the same name. In every case elect to recover the largest file size - that has the best chance of being the original
    3. Yes you can restore from Time Machine to another location
    4. If you don't trust Time Machine then why are you using one of the (very many) alternative apps?

  • Keeping iTunes library on a time capsule

I want to be able to keep my music library on my time capsule instead of my iMac, both for purposes of not using up all my hard drive space and also to allow other computers to access it thru the network. However, itunes Does Not Want to do this. I've changed the location of the library thru Prefs>Advanced>itunes media folder location several times but it keeps reverting to the default of users/myname/music.
Basically it seems to hold the change as long as I keep the computer on, but once it restarts/is shut off, it reverts back.
Is there some way to make changes to the default 'stick'? There are other programs too that don't seem to want to keep my changes--for example I have safari and chrome set to reopen w/ previous tabs, but unless I close them out using the Option key they reopen w/ 1 tab at the default home page.
    Thanks!

    Don't do it that way.
Read these.  If you're going to start doing this you need to know how iTunes works.  This can get messy fast.
What are the iTunes library files? - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
More on iTunes library files and what they do - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes#Media_management

    You have two options.
    1) Share the whole library.  Disadvantages: a) Somebody makes changes you don't like then there's no way to undo it easily.  b) The library file can only be open on one computer at a time.
    2) Share just media.  Each user has their own library file but share media files.  Multiple people can run iTunes at the same time.  Gets slightly tricky making sure each computer is up to date on new media added.
To do 1) you should have:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
To do 2 we can provide other instructions.
Finally, don't do this with Time Capsule.  When your TC drive dies you lose not only your original library but the backup at the same time.  Unless you have two TCs, one for a file server and the other as backup.

  • How I can transfer my itunes library to my Time Capsule?

how I can transfer my itunes library to my Time Capsule?

iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder
But, before you do this, you might want to think about how you will backup the iTunes library that will be moved to the Time Capsule. (Time Machine cannot do this).
Since you will need another hard drive as the target for the backup of the iTunes library, it might make more sense to move your iTunes library to a hard drive attached directly to your Mac.
Then, Time Machine will back up both your Mac...and....the attached hard drive to your Time Capsule using Time Machine.

  • Itunes/Time Capsule/the cloud

I keep my iTunes library on a time capsule at home.  I use the same computer for home and work. When I go to work, and start iTunes - none of my music will stream via The Cloud.  I have uploaded, or  "matched" my library to the cloud.  Help?

    Thank you for your reply.
Not all of the music currently backed up on Time Capsule is of the same quality as the matched songs will be.  More specifically my question should have been:  Will I be able to download the higher quality "Matched" songs from iCloud on to my mac and then back them up on Time Capsule?
    Thanks for everyone's help.

I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:

If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • Why can't I open IPhoto library stored on Time Capsule?

Our old iMac G5 was struggling with the 27k of photos on it and couldn't accept a software update, so I have bought a 2T Time Capsule and a MacBook, in the hope that I could copy my music and photos onto the Time Capsule and use the MacBook just to access and use the data.
I've dragged and dropped the music from the G5 to the TC and can get at that ok with the MacBook, and when I dragged the iPhoto library over it took ages, which was reassuring given the amount of data. However, when I try to look at the iPhoto library on the TC, while iPhoto on the MacBook can see all of the events, folders, numbers of images etc, when I actually want to look at a photo, all I get it a black screen with a grey triangle and an exclamation mark.
I've done the 'show package contents' thing, and all the photos are on the TC, and I can see them in Preview.
I've checked the TC formatting and it is MacOS Extended (case sensitive, journaled).
    Possible issues:
    - is it a problem that the TC is also set up to do backups?
    - is it a problem that the MacBook is set up with two users?
Not sure what else the problem might even be...
Help me please, otherwise I'll have to pay someone to come and sort it out and feel like I've totally failed...
    Thanks!

Your iPhoto Library is very likely corrupted.
This is an iPhoto issue, so you need to post in the iPhoto support area to let the experts over there offer some suggestions to see if the library can be rebuilt. The link to the iPhoto support area is here:
    iPhoto
The experts over there will likely also explain to you why you should never try to use the Time Capsule to store your "working" library with iPhoto.
The bottom line is that access to the library on the Time Capsule is very slow, and if there is any break in communications between the iPhoto application and the library....something that would easily occur using wireless.....this can corrupt the entire library.
You may be asked to trash the current library and use your backup to rebuild things.
In the future, you really want to place the iPhoto library on a USB drive or FireWire drive that is directly connected to your Mac. Access to the library is fast this way and this setup will work well.  Time Machine will also backup the attached hard drive to your Time Capsule so you will have backups of both the Mac and the hard drive.
I'll let the iPhoto experts take it from here. Hopefully Terrence Devlin will answer your question, but you might be prepared for a bit of a lecture in the process.
Good luck on trying to rescue the library.

  • Is Time Capsule the only way to wirelessly back up my mac?

I was hoping I could use an existing external hard drive and hook it up to an Airport Express to wirelessly back up my system. Unfortunately, the USB port on the airport does not recognize external hard drives (from what I know). Thus, is Time Capsule the only method of doing this? Thanks.

If you are limiting yourself to TM, probably, but you can copy files and backup you system to any HD you can see on a network, wireless or not.
CarbonCopyCloner will backup to any network machine - they do not specify wireless or not. I don't know about SuperDuper.
Of course the time to make a backup on a WiFi connection is prohibitive for most users. Backing up 70 GB over even a 100 MB/s link is quite tedious. A Gb Wireless connection might be useful but not many have such a link.

  • I don't want my Time Capsule to link ti Internet, does anyone know how to achieve this ? Thanks Don

I don't want my Time Capsule to link to Internet, does anyone know how to achieve this ? Thanks Don

    Don,
We have no idea how you have your network set up, or what devices other than a Time Capsule that you might have, so it it impossible to provide an answer for you based on what we know at this time.
Can you provide some details so that we can understand how you have things setup, what devices that you have, etc?
The Time Capsule does need to connect to the Internet to receive firmware updates from Apple, so you would be missing out on some significant things......like a recent important security update....if you try to configure the Time Capsule to connect in the way that you ask about.
Backups will not be "automatic" if you configure the Time Capsule without an Internet connection. You will have to manually switch networks whenever you want to back up, and then switch back again to your "other" network for normal use. Quite a hassle for most users, even if it can be done.

  • Upgrading iPhoto Library from Apple Time Capsule

I have put my iPhoto library onto my Time Capsule, and I know I need to upgrade my library. Every time I open iPhoto, I am asked to upgrade my library, and I click on upgrade, but it never finishes. After several minutes of attempting to upgrade, the app just quits on its own. I would like to access my photo library. How can I fix this problem?

How is the TC connected to your Mac? (It must be a fast hard wired connection like FireWire, USB or ThunderBolt for iPhoto - a network or wireless connection will not work)
Is it being used strictly as an External Hard Drive - or is it the destination for you TimeMachine backup? (if so you can not have your iphoto library on it)
Probably the fix will be to put it back on your internal drive - or on a separate EHD formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled) with a fast wired connection

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule".The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data-1/Macintosh.sparsebundle" is already in use.

When I back up my macbook pro to time capsule 3TB, this appears:
"Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Time Capsule”.The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Macintosh.sparsebundle” is already in use."
and I'm not able to back up.  What do I do?

As noted in the link I posted, that's fine if you're the only user logged-on to the only Mac using the TC's disks (internal and/or USB externals).  If not, that may corrupt other data being written, especially other backups.

  • My iphoto library, located on time capsule ( +/- 50G) does not load at all after upgrade to OSX to Yosemite ?

    Dear all,
I am guessing, this is not the end for accessing to my iphoto (last update) library, my life memories, but after upgrade to OSX Yosemite, my iphoto library, located on time capsule (+/- 50G) does not load at all. I have sent the report to Apple.
I am, worried to save or see my pictures back.

    Best Regards,

    That is a bad idea
1 - since you have files on the same disk as your backup you have no backup for those files which apparently includes you photos - having no b means it is just a matter of time until you lose them
2 - The TimeMachine backup grows until it fills the volume it is on - when the TC is full iphoto (and maybe other programs) will stop workig due to lack of space
You need at least two external hard drives - one for the iPhoto library (this one needs to be directly connected with a fast wired connection like Thungrbolt, Firewire or USB and be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) ) and a separate EHD for  you TM backup
