ITunes Library.itl file, and temp files after Time Machine retrieval
Hi - I messed up a playlist and got it back fine using Time Machine, but I'm left with temp files as well as iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml files on my desktop (that's where I placed the needed file for playlist re-import). Can't delete them, can't move them....what do I do with them?! Thanks in advance for any guidance.
<< Quit iTunes then delete them. >>
Thanks, but with iTunes closed, I get this when I try to delete.

When opening a sealed file, are the Autosave-File and Temp-Files encrypted?
Hi, when opening / editing a sealed file (e.g. a MS Word document), are the Autosave-File and Temp-Files encrypted?
Hello,
Yes they are. If they weren't, it would be relatively easy to leak an unsealed version of the file. In older versions of the Desktop IRM opened all files in browser, so theIRM Desktop had to encrypt and copy around these files manually. Nowadays, the IRM Desktop is embedded in the Office applications themselves so we leave the temporary file creation to the application but manage the encryption depending on the nature of the file. So the autosave and temp files (where content may reside) are encrypted, but the lock file (which is only for ownership, not content) is not encrypted for example.
In fact, the autosave/temp files which are encrypted are actually treated as sealed files, so they contain all the metadata fields you would expect. For example, open a sealed document in Word and set the autosave to every minute and make some changes. wait a minute and you'll see the autosave file (which is a .asd) update automatically (the default location is C:\Documents and Settings\<youruserid>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\). Make a copy of the file and close Word. If you open the file and Select a Program from a List and choose Word you'll see the file open as a sealed document. If you rename the extension to .sdoc or .sdocx (depending on what the original file was), then you can right click Properties and see the metadata is there too.
Nicely secure.
Regards,
Frank. -

Hi guys,
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
hope somebody can help me with this issue with TM.
I decided to restore my entire system from a backup I got in an external hard drive ( formatted mac Os Journaled). I didnt exclude any folder from the backup.
Basically using the mac osx installation disk
Which one? If you used a Leopard Install disc, that's the problem. You need to use a +Snow Leopard+ disc to restore a +Snow Leopard+ backup. (Unfortunately, Apple doesn't exactly make that clear -- you are far from the first!)
If your system is not too large, and didn't take more than an hour or so to restore, just do it over.
If it's a lot larger, though, you can just install Snow Leopard. Your Mac should boot up normally, but don't use any apps yet. First, download and install the 10.6.5 "combo" update. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards. -
10.7 Mail and exchange issues after time machine restore
Hey all,
Trying to figure out what the problem is with mail
Background
- was running 10.7.1
- had mail configured with exchange no issues what so ever.
- hard drive failed and I restored with time machine using the recovery hd partition in Lion

- mail stop working
- folders don't update
- have to restart mail
- mail redownloads all the message again
what i have tired
- disk utility - single user mode
- removing the mail folder ~/Library/Mail
- removing the mail preferences in ~/Library/Preferences
- recreating all mail account by deleting the above. Works for a bit then has the same issue the longer mail is open.
any help would be appreciated.
thankslooks like others are having the similar issue but not the solution for me so far

I have deleted my iTunes files by mistake and when attempting to recover in time machine I am getting an error message 36 when it finds an incomplete file an I use another method.
I had this exact issue. Spent over an hour on the phone with apple support, they couldn't resolve. Here is what I ended up doing, that worked.
1. Turned iTunes match off on all my iOS devices
2. Deleted the offending playlists from the iOS device they originated on
3. Started iTunes, let it run (literally) for an hour before it became responsive. First thing I did, before clicking anywere else was disable iTunes match. If I clicked anywhere, it would clock for another hour.
4. Let iTunes run overnight, by morning it had cleaned out the repeating play lists. This got my Mac/iTunes back to an operable state.
5. Restore iPhones from backup in iTunes.
What was causing my issue was a single playlist that was created on an iPhone, then suddenly showed up with several thousand duplicates on my other iPhone. The culprit playlist did not, for some reason, duplicate itself on my two iPads. Apple support seemed to think it was because the problem iPhone tried to sync the playlist to iCloud over and over again unsuccessfully, then it finally went through and populated the thousands of blank/failed playlists which then tried to propigate to iTunes and my other iOS devices. Seems like a reasonable theory.
I have not yet re-enabled iTunes match. So, no idea what will happen if I decide to go back down that rabbit hole. -
Slow backup (and spotlight problems) after time machine restore
Hi All,
After having some shaky moments with my macbook pro's internal hard drive, I have now installed a new one. I am running the latest version of 10.6.8.
The machine is running fine after a restore from my Time machine backup, but there are a few problems:
1) Time machine is now making a new backup - it looks like it wants to do a complete backup, which is ok as I have the space. However, after about 30 mins it has completed 156k and is now running at about 1k a second (or less).
2) Spotlight is reindexing, but appears to be stuck on "Estimating indexing time".
3) I tried opening mail, and it said it had to convert my mailbox - it got part way through the number of messages and stopped. I force quite, I'll try that one again later.
Any ideas for 1) and 2) above? I can't see any odd looking messages in the console...
CheersSo... thought I'd update this since it may help someone else later...
The time machine backup completed fine in the end - it looked like it wanted to do a complete backup but I think it just did a delta in the end.
The spotlight reindex ran for about another 6 hours, judging by the console messages.
However, now I'm trying to run mail - and it's stuck on importing the mailbox - it got to 14157 of 57904 and stopped there. The "time remaining" is increasing by about 5 minutes every minute....
I've seen the following message in the console, which I also saw while it was trying to do the spotlight index last night:
NSDataMessageStore: couldn't find body
Anyway, I'll let it run and see what happens... -
External drive for iTunes library and backing up via time machine
Hi, I currently have an 320gb external drive plugged into usb port of my imac for time machine back up, but my itunes library is 500gb and currently excluded from time machine back up, I would like to buy a 2 or 3tb external drive and then move my itunes library to that to free space on my imac.
I'd really like to know the best way to set up and what to buy, ie, if i move the library to an external drive am I able to back up the external drive via time machine, plus I assume if I do this i need a second external drive or time capsule to back up the library
Also the external drive is plugged directly into imac but I have an airport extreme is there any benefit plugging the drive into this, would this mean you access file from network (should you do this if its used for time machine), should I get rid of the extreme and buy a time capsule
Thanks in advanceHi, I'd recommend one of these...
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
FW400 will be faster than USB2, & FW8000 even better.
I see no advantage to plugging it into Your Extreme. -
Empty iTunes library and locked iTunes Library.itl file
Hi everyone,
A few days ago, when I plugged my iPod nano into my PC, it wouldn't sync and my computer automatically ejected the iPod. I didn't think much of it at first, because that had happened before, without any future problems. And, besides that, I could still listen to all of my music through iTunes.
The next day, however, I opened iTunes and my whole library was empty. I tried going over the basics (opening iTunes with shift key held down, trying a few different .itl files; reinstalling iTunes)
I then looked for answers online, but no luck so far. One approach that helped many people (unticking the read-only box for the iTunes folder) did give me some more answers, but did not solve the problem. I found out that the iTunes folder had the read-only box ticked, so I tried unticking it. It went fine for a few seconds, but in the process of making every file and folder non-read-only, I got a message saying iTunes Library.itl was a locked file and that I could not access it.
When I examined the .itl file more closely, I found out that the read-only box was not ticked for that particular file, even though I could not move/delete/cut/copy+past it. The archiving option, however, was ticked (I was told that option should not be on). I cannot untick it, for the file is locked.
When I double-click the file iTunes launches normally, but my library is still empty.
Other things I've tried to retrieve my library:
- I downloaded 'unlocker', but that did not solve anything.
- I uninstalled my last.fm scrobbler.
- I tried making a new library, then imported the .xml file from my old library, but the library stayed empty.
- I used AVG to scan my computer for malware.
I hope someone can help me fix this, because having to import all of my music all over again is going to be quite a drag!
Thanks in advance.Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
If you're still having problems accessing files right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows Vista/7 shouldn't be too different.
If it won't let you change the permissions use the Owner tab to take ownneship from an account with administror privileges.
When you get it all working make a backup!

Using file "iTunes Library.itl" on an earlier version of iTunes
With the problems and disappointment I've had with iTunes 8.0, I decided to remove it.
After uninstalling iTunes 8.0, I reinstalled iTunes 7.7.1.11. When I launched iTunes 7.7.1.11, I received the following message:
The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
Is there a way of converting "iTunes Library.itl" that was created with iTunes 8.0 to something that iTunes 7.7 will be able to use?
I would appreciate any help on this. When I downloaded iTunes 8.0, I found that I could no longer select bit rate and file type when importing CDs. I don't understand why a new "improved" version of iTunes would reduce functionality. I decided to get rid of it and tried System Restore to a point two days before I had downloaded 8.0. Lo and behold, 8.0 is inviolable and will not allow that. Then I uninstalled it and installed 7.4 and wound up with the "iTunes Library.itl" message and a program that refused to open. Apple support was no help at all, so thank you Chris, for your solution.
To clarfy a little, though:
When I searched, Windows could not identfy a file with the extension of ".itl" but the file is called "iTunes Library" and is located under your user name then "Music/iTunes." Take this file and cut and paste to your desktop (just in case) and and then click on the folder "Previous iTunes Libraries." Find the most recent file prior to the date of your 8.0 installation and copy and paste it to back to where you deleted the newer one. iTunes should open though you will probably have to re-import your files. All in all, too much work for no gain whatsoever. -
Recreating of TEMP file and TEMP Tablespace
Hi!
I have a problem with recreating of TEMP file and TEMP Tablespace after I made a copy of my database.
I made a new TEMP file and TEMP Tablespace and set them as default:
SQL> CREATE TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMP3 TEMPFILE 'C:\app\Orcldata\orclcopy\TEMP05.DBF' SIZE 2000M;
SQL> ALTER DATABASE DEFAULT TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMP3;
But when a made a select to see them:
SQL> SELECT tablespace_name, file_name, bytes FROM dba_temp_files WHERE tablespace_name = 'TEMP3';
SELECT tablespace_name, file_name, bytes FROM dba_temp_files WHERE tablespace_name = 'TEMP3'
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01157: cannot identify/lock data file 202 - see DBWR trace file
ORA-01110: data file 202: 'C:\APP\ORCLDATA\ORCL\TEST_IASTEMP.DBF'
I can't understand where is the problem.

Thx!Im gonna throw 2c in the ring and say "someone" (bunny fingers) deleted 'C:\APP\ORCLDATA\ORCL\TEST_IASTEMP.DBF' without dropping from the database first.
in dos, see if the file exists, Id be surprised if it does
dir C:\APP\ORCLDATA\ORCL\TEST_IASTEMP.DBF
drop the temp tablespace associated with it -
ITunes Library.itl becomes corrupt very often
I very often run into the same trouble.
After working on my iTunes Mediathek (adding covers etc.) I close iTunes and it is not possible to open it again.
It comes up with the error "iTunes Library.itl cannot be opened".
After rebuilding the iTunes Library.itl from the iTunes Library.xml it works for a while and then the problem appears again.
Sometimes iTunes creates a lot of "Temp File xx.tmp" files. In this case it is possible to rename the latest temp-file into iTunes Library.itl and iTunes works again.
This problem costs me hours of work.
It did not happen with iTunes 10.7; just since I updated to iTunes 11.
Does anybody have an idea?
I use iTunes 11.0.1 on OSX 10.8.2 on MBP 15" late 2008.
Thanks in advanceThe problem is solved.
iTunes will start to build "Temp File xx.tmp"-files if there would be a problem to write to the harddrive.
After checking and repairing my disk I renamed the latest of the "Temp File xx.tmp" into iTunes Library.itl & iTunes Library.xml (corresponding to the file size)!
And what should I say? iTunes is running stable, no more "Temp File xx.tmp"-files and no problems in starting iTunes again and again.
I hope this will help if some of you have the same problems!

Itunes library.itl is locked, on locked disk or you dont have permission 4.
itunes library.itl is locked, on locked disk or you dont have permission 4.
i tried the other suggestions and i cant get rid of this message.
can anyobdy help?I had that problem too. I tried to remove iTunes from my computer and then download it again, but that did not make any difference. Then I tried polydorus' answer ("starting iTunes with the shift key held down, when asked to choose a library, navigate to your iTunes folder and choose iTunes Library.itl"), but that did not work either and that same message about the library being locked appeared again.
Then I had a brainwave. I deleted that iTunes library.itl file. (To find it, go to My documents, then My Music, then iTunes, and there is the itunes library file). I now tried to open iTunes by clicking on the iTunes icon on my desktop, nothing happened, as if I had not clicked on it at all. I restored the file from the recycling bin to where it was before. But that also returned me to where I had been before, i.e. I got that locked-library message again. So I deleted that file again. Then I tried right-clicking on the iTunes icon. On the little menu that appeared, I clicked 'Open' and hey presto, suddenly the iTunes set-up assistant appeared and everything went smooth from then on. When I checked, there was a file called iTunes library.itl again and this one worked OK.
By the way, I did not lose any of my music downloads or podcasts when I deleted that file, so it's definitely worth a try. -
I had to uninstall iTunes because when I connected my ipod and was in that file and clicked on music to add songs that file was empty. Once I downloaded iTunes again a box appeared that said The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes..............so then I unistalled iTunes and downloaded again 4 different times and got the same message each time. I am using a laptop Windows Vista 64 bit system...please help
I don't know how you received an upgrade for iTunes. You make it sound like it was sent to you. At most your computer will tell you of a new version and you tell it to download it and install it. However, a computer will not do this for a version which is incompatible. iTunes 10.7 came out a few weeks ago but your computer would not notify you and even if it did, 10.7 would refuse to install on your computer. So this part isn't making a lot of sense.
Two ways to get the 'newer version' message. One is to open your library on a computer running a newer version, and then try to open it with an older version. Usually happens when the library is on an external and used with multiple computers. The second way is if you have multiple versions of itunes installed on your computer.
The newest (and likely the last) iTunes for OSX 10.5.8 is iTunes 10.6.3 which has been out for quite a while.
iTunes 10.6.3.25 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575 -
I had a prompt to update the software, when this was updated i tunes would not open coming up with a 404 error message. So I uninstalled it, reinstalled the 64 bit version for windows, now it wont open with the mentioned error message.
zepel has it, but perhaps some more detail will help.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
When you get it all working make a backup!
