ITunes library.itl - Im going crazy! Help

I am trying to get my iTunes appl up and running.I never had issues before 7.0 I tried with 7.02.16, i tried with 6.x versions...same result: I store my mp3's (45,000+) on an external HD. I import the files (which takes considerable time;-() and whenever I close iTunes and re-open later I get the same error 'The file "iTunes Library.itl" does not appear to be a valid iTunes Library file...bla...bla...bla
iTunes then generates a useless replacement file. I don't know what I am doing wrong !!! HELP!

This kind of problem seems to be rather common with iTunes 7 and external drives and large libraries seem to figure often. Unfortunately no one knows exactly why it happens or how to prevent it.
One suggestion is that virus checking may in some way make iTunes think the library is corrupt. You could try specifically excluding iTunes Library.itl from virus checking. Most antivirus software has an option to do this somewhere buried in the options.
It is important to ensure that the external drive is up and running before opening iTunes.
One thing you might experiment with, you didn't say where the library file is located. By default it is in My Music\iTunes on your internal drive. I don't know if it would make any difference moving it onto the external drive, or back again if that's where it is.
If you start iTunes with the shift key held down it will allow you to create or choose a library.
If you manage to get a working copy of the library, it is worth making a backup:
Backup the iTunes Library Files
The library files are in:
My Documents\My Music\iTunes
Close iTunes and wait about 30 seconds.
Copy iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml somewhere else e.g. into the Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
To restore, with iTunes closed drag the current itl and xml file from the iTunes folder to the desktop, then copy the backup iTunes Library.itl into the iTunes folder. The xml file isn’t necessary but can come in handy if the library needs to be recreated and the itl file is causing problems.

  • Damaged iTunes Library.itl file, anyway to recover?? pls help!

    Hi there,
My harddrive has gone through some bad blocks and subsequently had to be replaced. I'm now going through and trying to salvage all that I can off the old HD, however it looks like one of the corrupted/damaged files is the one i need most; the "iTunes Library.itl" and the "iTunes Music Library.xml" files which are found in the iTunes folder. I organise a lot of music via playlists and I believe that these two files are the two that hold all the playlist data.
Apart from data recovery centers, is there any other possible way that I could recover these two files? Seems crazy that I would spend $800 on recovering about 50mb, however they are incredibly important!
    Hope someone can help,
    cheers,

first check to see if the itunes .itl library file, or any folders in the folder heirarchy above it have somehow been set to "read only". if they have, try switching that off.
What are the iTunes Library files?
if no joy with that, see:

My iTunes won't open! It keeps saying 'The iTunes Library.itl is locked on a locked disk or you not have write permission for this file.' Please Help!

this may happen on external drives if:
The external drive was hotpluged (removed) without going the correct "eject" way
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
    First Aid for external drive
    Close iTunes
Unmount (eject) external drive the right way.
    Mount drive again
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up" This will force the filesystem to rescan the file structure of the drive and rebuilding the file system table and journaling file.
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive) restart iTunes
If your iTunes library is on your internal drive, this may happen
The system was not shoot down correct, e.g. "pulled the plug"
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
First Aid for internal hard drive
    Close iTunes
    Reboot system
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up"
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive)
    Reboot system, restart iTunes
If none of the above fixes your problem, post here.

    HEELLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPP

Actually it's very simple to solve without losing anything.
Do a search on your computer for "itunes library.itl". When the search finds it...delete it.
Open itunes again, and it should work sucessfully.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.

Unless you've recently attempted to downgrade iTunes this is probably a sign of a corrupt library file. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

Holding down the shift key while iTunes is opening. That will bring up the 'choose iTunes library' dialog. Select 'Choose LIbrary' from the choices and navigate to your music folder and iTunes music folder.

If you still have an issue you may have to see about using the iTunes version (application) included with Snow Leopard 10.6 from the installer or an another one if available online, and see if that will install.
Sometimes you may have uninstall the bits left in your system by the earlier (or later) iTunes installers; as they all leave a trace and these can stop a different version of iTunes from being installed.

I hate iTunes 11 too... and I also want to revert to previous version. But Apple seems to be so incredibly customer-friendly these days that is quite deliberately not publishing clear/simple revert instructions. I think it's a disgrace that Apple removed Cover Flow without warning people who are tempted to upgrade. Absolute disgrace. And now we're stuck with this piece of ..
